Mathematics Vocabulary Instruction For Current Non-Proficient Students With And Without Ieps: A Study Of Three Methods Of Instruction., George D. Brown

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this experimental study was to determine which of three methods of vocabulary instruction, including the common approach method, a combination of the common approach method and keyword method, and a combination of the common approach method and the keyword/illustration method of instruction was most effective in teaching mathematics vocabulary over the course of two mathematical units. Grade eight students (N=60) from two rural middle schools who scored at the basic level on the 2006 Maryland School Assessment (MSA) in mathematics and reading participated in this experimental study. Students with individualized education plans (n=24) and regular education students …

Who Is The Servant-Leader?, Robert Greenleaf Jan 2007

Who Is The Servant-Leader?, Robert Greenleaf

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Who is the servant-leader? Is not every servant a leader because of influence by example? Walt Whitman may have answered this when he wrote, "We convince by our presence."

The Road Less Traveled, Larry Spears Jan 2007

The Road Less Traveled, Larry Spears

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

WHAT HAPPENS TO SERVANT-LEADERS WHEN THEY GET TIRED? Not long ago I was reminded of a quote-two quotes actually-which the noted author M. Scott Peck had shared with us as part of his 1993 Greenleaf conference keynote address. Peck, who passed away in 2005, and who is best known as the author of The Road Less Traveled, had admitted at the time that he was feeling tired, and he quoted T. S. Elliot, who had written: "Middle age is when they keep asking you to do more and more, and you're not yet decrepit enough to turn them down."

Fethullah Gulen As A Servant-Leader, Gurkan Celik, Yusuf Alan Jan 2007

Fethullah Gulen As A Servant-Leader, Gurkan Celik, Yusuf Alan

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

The leadership literature often enumerates different leadership types and qualities (Northouse, 2002). This article aims to examine servant-leadership using an empirical example with a coherent theoretical basis. It centres on Fethullah Giilen, the initiator of a worldwide Islamic social movement. Giilen is of Turkish origin but has lived in the United States since 1999 because of the repressive political atmosphere of Turkey and due to some personal health problems. He has been defined as a harmonizing leader and an intellectual-scholar (ulama) focussing on social reforms and mentality change (Bulac, 2005). The movement inspired by Giilen emerged in the late 1960s …

Servant-Leadership, Regenerative Love, And Forgiveness, Harris W. Fawell Jan 2007

Servant-Leadership, Regenerative Love, And Forgiveness, Harris W. Fawell

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

SERVANT-LEADERSHIP - "NONE DARE CALL IT RELIGIOUS?" Christine Wicker, a senior religion reporter for The Dallas Morning News, captures an intriguing aspect of the spirit of Robert Greenleaf and the servant-leadership movement he created in her essay, Seeking the Soul of Business. Wicker observes that "None dare call it religious! But a management philosophy catching on at companies across America sounds so much like religion that adherents are sometimes at pains to make the difference clear. This is spirituality. Ethics. Values. Common sense. And market imperative, they say" (Spears, 1988, p. 246). But not necessarily the domain of religion.

The Journey Of Leadership Development From The Inside Out: Beginning, Paul M. Nakai Jan 2007

The Journey Of Leadership Development From The Inside Out: Beginning, Paul M. Nakai

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

The following essay is the first in a two part series by Paul Nakai. Look for the second installment, entitled The Journey of Leadership Development from the Inside Out: Going Forward in the 2008 International Journal of Servant-Leadership. A few years ago, a young boy climbed over a protective fence surrounding a high voltage transformer box. Unfortunately, the box's locking mechanism was faulty and the child managed to get into the transformer and was severely burned. As you would imagine, the various parties started to litigiously position themselves to insure a "fair" settlement. A flurry of emotions, accusations, defenses and …

The Regulation And Role Of Hypoxia Inducible Factor-1 (Hif-1) In Human Cancer, Heath Devin Skinner Jan 2007

The Regulation And Role Of Hypoxia Inducible Factor-1 (Hif-1) In Human Cancer, Heath Devin Skinner

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Hypoxia inducible factor-1 is a heterodimeric basic-loop-helix transcription factor composed of two subunits, HIF-1alpha and HIF-1beta. HIF-1beta is constitutively expressed in cells, while HIF-1alpha is upregulated by hypoxia as well as growth factors and oncogenes. In this study we focus on the regulation of HIF-1alpha expression by phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase (PI3K), and novel functions of HIF-1alpha. Chapter 1 of this dissertation, consists of background and a brief review of the literature regarding PI3K signaling and HIF-1alpha. Chapter 2 focuses on the observation that basal HIF-1alpha expression is upregulated in ovarian cancer and the mechanism by which PI3K regulates this effect. Chapter …

Propanil (3,4-Dcpa)-Induced Alterations Of Macrophage Function, Irina V. Ustyugova Jan 2007

Propanil (3,4-Dcpa)-Induced Alterations Of Macrophage Function, Irina V. Ustyugova

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The pesticide 3,4-dichloropropionanilide (propanil or alternatively, DCPA) is a post-emergent herbicide predominantly used for the control of weeds on commercial rice crops worldwide. The US Environmental Protection Agency report on "Pesticides Industry Sales and Usage in 2001" ranked propanil as the 17th most used herbicide in the US. It is applied on the fields via groundboom sprayers or aerial equipment suppressing photosynthesis and carbon fixation of a growing plant. The primary target of herbicide exposure is personnel working in the manufacturing and application who are required to wear personal protective equipment to minimize the exposure. The common routes of this …

Investigating Comprehensive Assessment Plans In Undergraduate Communication Studies Programs, Andrea Celeste Weber Jan 2007

Investigating Comprehensive Assessment Plans In Undergraduate Communication Studies Programs, Andrea Celeste Weber

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Outcome assessments of academic programs have become increasingly critical in recent years. A continuous process formed to "monitor and improve student learning," true assessment serves to focus institutions of higher education on student learning (Allen, 2004, p. 5). It is vital to understand and explore current assessment practices in departments of communication studies to ensure and enhance the quality and future of education in the field. This study represents an initial attempt at establishing a baseline of assessment practices utilized within departments of communication studies. The results exhibit the extent to which assessment is being used for continuous improvement of …

This study presents results of the effects of bisphenol A (BPA) on adult egg production, egg hatchability, egg development rates and juvenile growth rates in the freshwater gastropod, Marisa cornuarietis. We observed no adult mortality, substantial inter-snail variability in reproductive output, and no effects of BPA on reproduction during 12 weeks of exposure to 0, 0.1, 1.0, 16, 160 or 640 μg/L BPA. We observed no effects of BPA on egg hatchability or timing of egg hatching. Juveniles showed good growth in the control and all treatments, and there were no significant effects of BPA on this endpoint. Our …

Nonylphenol Stimulates Fecundity But Not Population Growth Rate (Λ) Of Folsomia Candida, T. H. Widarto, P. H. Krogh, Valery E. Forbes Jan 2007

Nonylphenol Stimulates Fecundity But Not Population Growth Rate (Λ) Of Folsomia Candida, T. H. Widarto, P. H. Krogh, Valery E. Forbes

Valery Forbes Publications

The toxicity of nonylphenol (NP) to springtails was pronounced at 40 mg/kg dry weight soil, at which no animals survived. Body length and fecundity were the individual life-history traits significantly stimulated by sublethal concentrations of NP during a 64-day experiment. However, the effects of NP on these traits did not result in a statistically significant increase in population growth rate (λ). Decomposition analysis indicated that fecundity was the main contributor to the (non-significant) changes observed in λ. However, since the elasticity of fecundity was very low, large changes in fecundity resulted in a minimal effect on λ. Juvenile survival had …

Conceptual Model For Improving The Link Between Exposure And Effects In The Aquatic Risk Assessment Of Pesticides, J. J.T.I. Boesten, H. Köpp, P. I. Adriaanse, T. C.M. Brock, Valery E. Forbes Jan 2007

Conceptual Model For Improving The Link Between Exposure And Effects In The Aquatic Risk Assessment Of Pesticides, J. J.T.I. Boesten, H. Köpp, P. I. Adriaanse, T. C.M. Brock, Valery E. Forbes

Valery Forbes Publications

Assessment of risks to aquatic organisms is important in the registration procedures for pesticides in industrialized countries. This risk assessment consists of two parts: (i) assessment of effects to these organisms derived from ecotoxicological experiments (= effect assessment), and (ii) assessment of concentration levels in relevant environmental compartments resulting from pesticide application (= exposure assessment). Current procedures lack a clear conceptual basis for the interface between the effect and exposure assessments which may lead to a low overall scientific quality of the risk assessment. This interface is defined here as the type of concentration that gives the best correlation to …

Valery Forbes Publications

It has been claimed that bisphenol A (BPA) induces superfeminization in the freshwater gastropod, Marisa cornuarietis. To explore the reproducibility of prior work, here we present results from a three-laboratory study, the objectives of which were to determine the mean and variability in test endpoints (i.e., adult fecundity, egg hatchability, and juvenile growth) under baseline conditions and to identify the sources of variability. A major source of variability for all of the measured endpoints was due to differences within and among individuals. With few exceptions, variability among laboratories and among replicate tanks within laboratories contributed little to the observed variability …

Implied World Views In Pictures: Reflections From A Cognitive Psychological And Anthropological Point Of View, Michael Ranta Jan 2007

Implied World Views In Pictures: Reflections From A Cognitive Psychological And Anthropological Point Of View, Michael Ranta

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

In traditional art history, iconological attempts to analyze visual works of art by treating their formal and semantic features as symptoms of more general, implied world views or cultures have occurred rather frequently. Still, such attempts have been criticized for permitting subjective and non-verifiable interpretations. In this paper, however, I will argue that (i) pictorial works of art indeed imply wider world views or schemata, and (ii) that our comprehension of these schemata can be explained by taking into account recent research within cognitive psychology. More specifically, I will argue that intelligence partly consists of the storage and retrieval of …

Guillermo Gómez-Peña's "Tekno Poética" Web Verse, Lost And Found In A Webspora, Angélica Huízar

World Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications

For an author who likes to cross borders Guillermo Gómez-Peña (1955) has certainly reached audiences in both the U.S. and Mexican artistic, literary, theoretical, and political arenas. Now, with the advent of more technological mediums such as the Internet, the borderless artist makes use of the global fetish that, in theory, reaches a global community. As a prelude to his performances, workshops, conferences and lectures, Gómez-Peña’s collaborative webiste engages his readers in video-poetic selections, and hypertext poetic medley with topics that are sure to catch their interest with poems such as "Apocalypse," "Sexo," "Militias," and the video-poems "Apocalypse" and "Califas." …

The Failure Of Market Mechanism In Health Care, Iga Rudawska Jan 2007

The Failure Of Market Mechanism In Health Care, Iga Rudawska

European Management Studies

Rising healthcare costs and the health needs of ageing populations are prompting economists and politicians to look for ways to rationalise the functioning of the healthcare sphere. The increasingly prevalent pro-market rhetoric should be mindful of the failure of the market mechanism in healthcare manifested in the failure to meet standard assumptions. This article discusses the basic elements of market failure in healthcare, i.e.: imperfect product, price and future information, imperfect competition and externalities. The author refers to welfare economics in her reflections. The conclusion of the text is that the dominant position of the profession and the strong need …

Medicinal Importance Of Grapefruit Juice And Its Interaction With Various Drugs, Jawad Kiani, Sardar Z. Imam Jan 2007

Medicinal Importance Of Grapefruit Juice And Its Interaction With Various Drugs, Jawad Kiani, Sardar Z. Imam

Medical College Documents

Grapefruit juice is consumed widely in today's health conscious world as a protector against cardiovascular diseases and cancers. It has however, been found to be an inhibitor of the intestinal cytochrome P - 450 3A4 system, which is responsible for the first pass metabolism of many drugs. The P - glycoprotein pump, found in the brush border of the intestinal wall which transports many of these cytochrome P - 450 3A4 substrates, has also been implicated to be inhibited by grapefruit juice. By inhibiting these enzyme systems, grapefruit juice alters the pharmacokinetics of a variety of medications, leading to elevation …

Busting The Bandito Boyz: Militarism, Masculinity, And The Hunting Of Undocumented Persons In The U.S.-Mexico Borderlands, Robert F. Castro Jan 2007

Busting The Bandito Boyz: Militarism, Masculinity, And The Hunting Of Undocumented Persons In The U.S.-Mexico Borderlands, Robert F. Castro

Journal of Hate Studies

“Bandito heroes flourish in many cultures because they symbolize a virtually universal belief: that at times it’s necessary to break the law in order to obtain justice,” writes historian Paul Vanderwood (1992, p. xix). The idea of justice does seem to animate many of the stories associated with the borderlands’ most famous outlaws. For example, retaliatory justice appears to be at the heart of the literal violence that Joaquin Murrieta inflicted on California Anglos during the nineteenth century. Joaquin Murrieta became famous for his lightning-fast robberies and bloody assaults in California during the 1850s Gold Rush. Reportedly, Murrieta was set …

Transgender And Transsexual Identities: The Next Strange Fruit—Hate Crimes, Violence And Genocide Against The Global Trans-Communities, Jeremy D. Kidd, Tarynn M. Witten Jan 2007

Transgender And Transsexual Identities: The Next Strange Fruit—Hate Crimes, Violence And Genocide Against The Global Trans-Communities, Jeremy D. Kidd, Tarynn M. Witten

Journal of Hate Studies

In this paper, we review the literature on global transgender hate crimes, violence, and abuse. We point out that it is possible to infer that this problem is not localized to the United States but rather, represents a global pandemic of focused prejudice. We point out that it can be viewed not only as an extremely serious and immediate public health problem, but also as genocide against a consistently invisibilized minority population. We provide concrete examples from the researchers’ field studies as well as from the published literature.

Reconceptualizing Anti-Lgbt Hate Crimes As Burdening Expression And Association: A Case For Expanding Federal Hate Crime Legislation To Include Gender Identity And Sexual Orientation, Jordan Blair Woods Jan 2007

Reconceptualizing Anti-Lgbt Hate Crimes As Burdening Expression And Association: A Case For Expanding Federal Hate Crime Legislation To Include Gender Identity And Sexual Orientation, Jordan Blair Woods

Journal of Hate Studies

The purpose of this article is to bring to the attention of researchers, scholars, and politicians an important point about the harms to LGBT victims resulting from hate crimes—one that, in my view, is ignored and is critical to the justifications for allowing bias crime victims to obtain legal compensation for being victimized on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. More specifically, this article critiques the current framing of anti-LGBT hate crimes in scholarship and empirical research and reconceptualizes these crimes as systemic inhibitors to expressive and associative opportunities on the basis of gender identity and sexual orientation …

On Hart's Ways: Law As Reason And As Fact, John M. Finnis Jan 2007

On Hart's Ways: Law As Reason And As Fact, John M. Finnis

Journal Articles

This address at the Hart Centenary Conference in Cambridge in July 2007 reflects on foundational elements in Hart's method in legal philosophy. It argues that his understanding of what it is to adopt an internal point of view was flawed by (a) inattention to the difference between descriptive history (or biography or detection) and descriptive general theory of human affairs, (b) inattention to practical reason as argument from premises, some factual but others normative (evaluative) in their content, and (c) relative inattention to the deliberations of law-makers as distinct from subjects of the law. These flaws contributed to a concept …
