Mosquito Landing Rates On Nesting American Robins (Turdus Migratorius), Sean M. Griffing, A. Marm Kilpatrick, Larry Clark, Peter P. Marra Oct 2007

Mosquito Landing Rates On Nesting American Robins (Turdus Migratorius), Sean M. Griffing, A. Marm Kilpatrick, Larry Clark, Peter P. Marra

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

We measured mosquito landing rates on adult and nestling American robins at nests with infrared cameras in Washington, D.C., and Maryland, United States. Mosquitoes landed on nesting robins almost exclusively between dusk and dawn. The mean number of mosquito landings per night was higher for adults (123.3 ± SE 32.8) than nestlings (37.26 ± 14.8). The fraction of mosquitoes landing at a nest on nestlings increased with decreases in adult brooding. Oral swabs from nestlings at these and 13 other robin, Gray catbird, and house finch nests were negative for West Nile virus (WNV). These results show that landing rates …

Utilization Of Community-Based Transitional Housing By Homeless Veteran Populations Diagnosed With A Mental Illness: The Association Between Predisposing, Enabling, And Need Factors With Program Outcomes, Roger Casey Oct 2007

Utilization Of Community-Based Transitional Housing By Homeless Veteran Populations Diagnosed With A Mental Illness: The Association Between Predisposing, Enabling, And Need Factors With Program Outcomes, Roger Casey

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Mental illness among homeless populations is a significant public health issue. Community-based programs that assist the homeless are most often developed to meet local housing needs, not the needs of mental health populations. Transitional housing, a model frequently utilized to address homelessness in communities, provides program-based housing with supportive services.

The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between participant- and program-level factors on the utilization of community-based transitional housing by homeless veterans diagnosed with a mental illness. The study tested a revised framework of the behavioral model of utilization for vulnerable populations theory.

The sample was comprised …

Elk Use Of Wallows And Potential Chronic Wasting Disease Transmission, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Patrick W. Burke, Gregory W. Phillips, Justin W. Fischer, Nathan W. Seward, Bruce A. Wunder, Michael J. Lavelle Oct 2007

Elk Use Of Wallows And Potential Chronic Wasting Disease Transmission, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Patrick W. Burke, Gregory W. Phillips, Justin W. Fischer, Nathan W. Seward, Bruce A. Wunder, Michael J. Lavelle

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Deposition of prions into the environment by infected animals may contribute to transmission and spread of chronic wasting disease (CWD) among free-ranging cervids, and identification of such environmental sources may provide an avenue for managing CWD. We evaluated the role that wallow use by elk (Cervus elaphus) may play in CWD transmission by monitoring wallows with animal-activated cameras throughout their period of use. We monitored 39 wallows from 5 August 2005 to 14 October 2005. Elk visited 20 sites; we recorded 22 events when only male elk wallowed and 374 additional events when male and female elk had …

Evaluation Of Constructed Wetland Performance In New Mexico, 2007, Jennie R. Skancke Oct 2007

Evaluation Of Constructed Wetland Performance In New Mexico, 2007, Jennie R. Skancke

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Wastewater treatment wetlands, also referred to as constructed wetland systems (CWS), were installed in New Mexico and other states during the 1990s to provide low cost and low maintenance wastewater treatment options to small communities served by on-site treatment systems. An analysis completed in 1995 examined the design and performance of 18 subsurface flow constructed wetlands. At that time, most of the systems were relatively new and little information was obtained about their long term performance. This project examined the performance of 11 constructed wetlands built between 1990 and 1996, five of which were included in the 1995 study. The …

An Update On Groundwater Conditions At The Site Of The York College Cuny Campus In Southeastern Queens County, New York City, Nazrul I. Khandaker, Stanley Schleifer, Zarine Ali, Edward A. Molteni Oct 2007

An Update On Groundwater Conditions At The Site Of The York College Cuny Campus In Southeastern Queens County, New York City, Nazrul I. Khandaker, Stanley Schleifer, Zarine Ali, Edward A. Molteni

Publications and Research

The wells operated by the Jamaica Water Supply Company in Queens represent the only large scale utilization of groundwater for public water supply in New York City in recent years. These wells were shut down, for the most part, beginning in 1996. Since that time, water table elevations in the area, which had been drawn down by the withdrawal activity of the Jamaica Water Supply Company, have risen significantly causing some high groundwater problems, including flooding of basements. The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) has held public hearings on a contemplated resumption of ground water withdrawal in …

An Evaluation Of The Genotoxic Effects Of Seed Decoction Of Cassia Tora L. (Leguminosae) In Allium Cepa Model, Pallavi Solanke, Mahendra Singh, Hemant Singh Rathore, Anjali Sharma, Mukesh Makwana, Sharad Shrivastava

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Cytological effects of Cassia tora seed decoction were evaluated in Allium cepa root tip cells. Bulbs were grown in pure tap water (controls, Gr. I) and also in six concentrations (0.15 mg/ml, 0.31 mg/ml, 0.62 mg/ml, 1.25 mg/ml, 2.5 mg/ml and 5 mg/ml) of C.tora seed decoction in tap water (experimental, Grs. II). Parameters of study were 'mean root length' and morphology i.e. colour and shape of root tips at 72 hr of cultivation and 'mitotic Index', chromosomal aberrations and abnormal mitosis at 48 hr of cultivation. Physico-chemical characterization of decoction was also made. No changes in the morphology of …

Field Assessment Of A Model Tuberculosis Outbreak Response Plan For Low-Incidence Areas, Laura Freimanis Hance, Karen R. Steingart, Christine G. Hahn, Lisa Pascopella, Charles M. Nolan Oct 2007

Field Assessment Of A Model Tuberculosis Outbreak Response Plan For Low-Incidence Areas, Laura Freimanis Hance, Karen R. Steingart, Christine G. Hahn, Lisa Pascopella, Charles M. Nolan

Public and Community Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: For a regional project in four low-incidence states, we designed a customizable tuberculosis outbreak response plan. Prior to dissemination of the plan, a tuberculosis outbreak occurred, presenting an opportunity to perform a field assessment of the plan. The purpose of the assessment was to ensure that the plan included essential elements to help public health professionals recognize and respond to outbreaks.

Methods: We designed a semi-structured questionnaire and interviewed all key stakeholders involved in the response. We used common themes to assess validity of and identify gaps in the plan. A subset of participants provided structured feedback on the …

Sirtuins, Nuclear Hormone Receptor Acetylation And Transcriptional Regulation, James R. Whittle, Michael J. Powell, Vladimir M. Popov, L. Andrew Shirley, Chenguang Wang, Richard G. Pestell Oct 2007

Sirtuins, Nuclear Hormone Receptor Acetylation And Transcriptional Regulation, James R. Whittle, Michael J. Powell, Vladimir M. Popov, L. Andrew Shirley, Chenguang Wang, Richard G. Pestell

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

Endocrine signaling via nuclear receptors (NRs) is known to play an important role in normal physiology as well as in human tumor progression. Hormones regulate gene expression by altering local chromatin structure and, thereby, accessibility of transcriptional co-regulators to DNA. Recently it has been shown that non-histone proteins involved in hormone signaling, such as nuclear receptors and NR co-activators, are regulated by acetylation, resulting in their altered transcriptional activity. NAD-dependent protein deacetylases, the sirtuins (Sir2-related enzymes), directly modify NRs. Because sirtuins have been shown to regulate tumor cellular growth, aging, metabolic signaling and endocrine hormone signaling, they might play a …
