Resilience And Risk-Taking Behavior Among Thai Adolescents Living In Bangkok, Thailand, Patcharin Nintachan
Resilience And Risk-Taking Behavior Among Thai Adolescents Living In Bangkok, Thailand, Patcharin Nintachan
Theses and Dissertations
The major purposes of this study were to determine the relationships among resilience, risk-taking behavior and personal characteristics of Thai adolescents living in Bangkok and to examine the differences in risk-taking behavior by school grades or gender. To accomplish these, a cross-sectional correlational research design was conducted. Resilience was measured by using the State-Trait Resilience Inventory developed by Hiew, Mori, Shirnizu and Torninaga.Risk-taking behavior was measured by the Risk-taking Behavior Questionnaire for Thai Adolescents which is a modified version of the 2003 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) originally developed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In order …
Concurrent Whitening And Orthodontic Treatment, Jason Thomas Gladwell
Concurrent Whitening And Orthodontic Treatment, Jason Thomas Gladwell
Theses and Dissertations
The aim was to evaluate whether a whitening system, when used during the final stages of orthodontics, would yield results comparable to whitening alone. Patients were assigned to either the control (n=20) or experimental (n=26) groups. At T1, patients were given a ten day supply of Trèswhite⢠by Opalescence®, instructions on use, and initial shade determination was made and photographs were taken. At T2 and T3, shade determination was accomplished and updated photographs were taken. Whitening of the teeth occurred in both groups on average, but significantly more whitening was experienced in the experimental group (p < 0.004). An average of 87% of teeth whitened during orthodontic treatment compared to 97% of control teeth (p < 0.01) were judged to be uniform in appearance. In conclusion, the data do not contraindicate the concurrent accomplishment of teeth whitening during orthodontic treatment.

Theses
The objective of this work is to evaluate the various management styles and systems applicable to the Environmental, Health, and Safety ('EHS') profession; furthermore, it will present ways in which managers will discover how to understand and evaluate projects from a 'business' point of view, allowing them to compete within their organization for capital and human resources. ... This paper will also discuss various evaluations used to ensure proper buy-in from management -- a process that will facilitate the allocation of human and financial resources to environment, health, and safety projects. The evaluation will focus on two primary elements. The …
Life In An Occupied City: Women In Winchester, Virginia During The Civil War, Laura Jane Ping
Life In An Occupied City: Women In Winchester, Virginia During The Civil War, Laura Jane Ping
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the homefront experience of middle class, white women living in Winchester, Virginia during the Civil War. The experience of women in Winchester was unique because of Winchester's proximity to both the Union and Confederate capitals. Although the majority of Winchester's women were Confederate supporters a significant minority of the population remained loyal to the Union. Winchester citizens' divided status was further complicated by numerous occupations of the town by both armies. This thesis argues that in order to cope with wartime hardships women's concepts of patriotism changed as homefront morale waned. While early in the war women's …

Civilly Committing Criminals: An Analysis Of The Expressive Function Of Nebraska's "Dangerous Sex Offender" Commitment Procedure, Marc W. Pearce
Nebraska Law Review
In 2006, the State of Nebraska adopted legislation that authorizes the civil commitment of convicted sex offenders who are "substantially unable to control [their] criminal behavior" and who "suffer[] from a mental illness .. .or .. .a personality disorder which makes [them] likely to engage in repeat acts of sexual violence." This legislation, which has its origins in the "sexually violent predator" commitment statutes of Washington and Kansas, authorizes the continuous, indefinite confinement of sex offenders who have completed their prison terms and who do not meet the state's traditional "mentally ill and dangerous civil commitment standard." Courts reviewing the …
Strangers In Their Own Land: Durational Residency Requirements For Tuition Purposes, Though Illegal, Are Here To Stay, John W. Anderson
Strangers In Their Own Land: Durational Residency Requirements For Tuition Purposes, Though Illegal, Are Here To Stay, John W. Anderson
Nebraska Law Review
It is common practice for public universities to impose durational residency requirements on students for tuition purposes. Of course, out-of-state students complain about the practice, which usually involves higher tuition rates for at least their first year of study, but interestingly, very few scholars have directly addressed the constitutional implications of durational residency requirements in the tuition context. There is no surprise in that, however. An intellectually honest analysis of the practice reveals some real questions about its constitutionality, but the academic community relies upon the economic benefits of the practice, at least in part, to maintain fiscal integrity. Self-interest …
Bryan In History: Liberal, Celebrity, Social Gospeler, Michael Kazin
Bryan In History: Liberal, Celebrity, Social Gospeler, Michael Kazin
Nebraska Law Review
Sometimes, a great speech can obscure the larger significance of the man who makes it. On the afternoon of July 9, 1896, William Jennings Bryan stepped up to the podium at the Democratic convention in Chicago and secured his spot in the headlines of history. 'Having behind us the producing masses of this nation and the world, supported by the commercial interests, the laboring interests, and the toilers everywhere,' he declared, before raising his hands to his temples and stretching his fingers out along his forehead for the penultimate phrase, 'we will answer their demand for a gold standard by …
The Effect Of Nutrition Information On Menu Selection When Eating Food Away From Home, Rebecca Foster Hochradel
The Effect Of Nutrition Information On Menu Selection When Eating Food Away From Home, Rebecca Foster Hochradel
Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration
As the number of Americans diagnosed with heart disease, diabetes, and excessive weight continues to increase, providing information to allow consumers to choose healthier foods becomes imperative. The number of consumers eating food away from home (EFAH) is rising. Although nutrition information is required on food products purchased for home use, it is not required when EFAH. How can a consumer know what is healthy if nutrition information is not provided? Policy makers and restaurateurs are in conflict regarding the provision of nutrition information on the menu. Policy makers want this information to be provided while restaurateurs say providing this …
The Overlapping Magisteria Of Law And Science: When Litigation And Science Collide, William G. Childs
The Overlapping Magisteria Of Law And Science: When Litigation And Science Collide, William G. Childs
Nebraska Law Review
"Science" plays a central role in litigation today. Civil litigants spend hours briefing and arguing the value of expert testimony. Studies performed years previously are taken apart and evaluated in detail. Criminal defendants are convicted or exonerated based on DNA evidence. And all of the evidence comes in through expert testimony, from witnesses who seek to explain the scientific issues to a lay jury, often in the form of opinion testimony. This testimony can, and often does, dictate the outcome of cases. Courts wrestle with the admissibility and use of scientific evidence every day, and have developed an evolving set …
Polluting Medical Judgment? False Assumptions In The Pursuit Of False Claims Regarding Off-Label Prescribing, Sandra H. Johnson
Polluting Medical Judgment? False Assumptions In The Pursuit Of False Claims Regarding Off-Label Prescribing, Sandra H. Johnson
All Faculty Scholarship
Over half of the FDA-approved prescription medications taken by patients are prescribed for a different purpose, in a higher or lower dose, for a discrete population, or over a longer period of time than that for which the drug was approved. Safety and efficacy concerns attract the most attention; but critical benefits in fostering innovation and providing patients with medications that may be uniquely effective for them are often overlooked.
The current dominant public policy response to off-label prescribing addresses this practice as a particular breed of financial conflicts of interest in which pharmaceutical firms pollute medical judgment by appealing …

The Health Care Choice Act: The Individual Insurance Market And The Politics Of 'Choice', Elizabeth Pendo
All Faculty Scholarship
Traditionally, employer-sponsored group insurance plans have been the backbone of health insurance coverage in the United States. While it is still true that most Americans get their health insurance through their employment, the erosion of employer-sponsored health insurance has increased the ranks of the uninsured and pushed more workers, retirees and their families into the individual insurance market. In 2005, for example, nine percent of the population, or nearly 27 million people, turned to individual policies for health insurance coverage.
The Health Care Choice Act of 2005 (the "Act") currently before Congress aims to reform perceived problems in the individual …
Days Without Immigrants: Analysis And Implications Of The Treatment Of Immigration Rallies Under The National Labor Relations Act, Michael C. Duff
Days Without Immigrants: Analysis And Implications Of The Treatment Of Immigration Rallies Under The National Labor Relations Act, Michael C. Duff
All Faculty Scholarship
The massive immigration rallies of early 2006 were prompted by anticipated congressional action classifying all unauthorized workers as felons subject to immediate deportation. While a product of federal immigration policy, the rallies implicate federal labor law because they could be characterized as concerted employee action resulting in a series of work stoppages.
Some employees were discharged for missing work to attend the rallies, so an initial question is whether participation in the rallies is protected activity under the National Labor Relations Act. But even assuming the rallies were attended by unauthorized workers, those workers are undeniably employees within the meaning …

Effects Of The Common Pesticide Methoxychlor On Ovarian Steroidogenesis, Yucel Akgul
Effects Of The Common Pesticide Methoxychlor On Ovarian Steroidogenesis, Yucel Akgul
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Methoxychlor, an organochlorine pesticide, is released into the environment as a result of its agricultural, home and veterinary use. Following in vivo administration, it is quickly metabolized by liver to the proposed active agent, HPTE. Both methoxychlor and HPTE have been shown to exhibit weak estrogenic and antiandrogenic activities, and they are thought to exert their effects through estrogen and androgen receptors. In vivo exposure to methoxychlor in laboratory animals causes ovarian atrophy and impaired ovarian steroid production. The effect of methoxychlor and its mechanism(s) of action on ovarian steroidogenesis are not clearly defined. The central hypothesis of these studies …
Characterization Of Skeletal Muscle Performance And Morphology Following Acute And Chronic Mechanical Loading Paradigms, Brent A. Baker
Characterization Of Skeletal Muscle Performance And Morphology Following Acute And Chronic Mechanical Loading Paradigms, Brent A. Baker
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Unaccustomed muscular activity (incorporating lengthening-type movements) results in skeletal muscle damage, yet effects in performance and muscle morphology from movements such as stretch-shortening contractions (which are common-type movements in daily activities) are not well characterized or quantified. Thus, determining time- and dose-dependent responses resulting from acute mechanical exposure will aid critically in understanding muscle injury kinetics and the role of repair and regeneration following this type of exposure. Furthermore, skeletal muscle mass and function declines with age and these events result in a significant impact on the aging workforce. Differentiating the response following both acute and chronic adaptive exposures in …
Effect Of Diesel Exhaust Particles On Allergic Reactions And Airway Responsiveness In Ovalbumin-Sensitized Brown Norway Rats, Caroline Dong
Effect Of Diesel Exhaust Particles On Allergic Reactions And Airway Responsiveness In Ovalbumin-Sensitized Brown Norway Rats, Caroline Dong
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Diesel exhaust particles (DEP) are the major constituent of ambient particulate matter in urban environments and occupational settings. Exposure to DEP in combination with an allergen has been demonstrated to enhance allergen-related airway inflammation, immunoglobulin (Ig) E production, and airway responsiveness (AR) in human and in animal models. However, the mechanisms behind these effects of DEP are not yet fully understood. In this study, we compared the effects of short-term DEP exposure on ovalbumin (OVA)-mediated airway responses under two exposure protocols using an OVA-allergic rat model. Male Brown Norway rats were sensitized to aerosolized OVA (40.5 +/- 6.3 mg/m3) on …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The carbohydrate portion of the natural products plays a crucial role in biology, such as target binding, solubility, tissue targeting, and membrane transportation. The O'Doherty group use a de novo methodology to build the desired functionality and stereochemistry within each sugar, in contrast to the traditional approach using known sugar isomers as starting materials. Recently, we have developed a practical and highly diastereoselective palladium catalyzed glycosylation reaction to control the stereochemistry at the anomeric center. Continuing, our investigations on the utility of this strategy, we turned our attention to the syntheses of the bioactive carbohydrate-based natural product analogues. The targets …

Study Of Reinforced Concrete Building Demolition Methods And Code Requirements, Haibin Huang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The life cycle of reinforced concrete buildings is usually 40 to 90 years. However, during this life cycle, buildings will often meet some circumstances, such as disasters, changing functions, city reconstruction, or higher demand for the residence etc.; all of these circumstances will lead to demolition or reconstruction of buildings. Moreover, many of Reinforced Concrete (RC) buildings in Asia or Europe built after World War II have been used for about 50 years or more, and now need to be rebuilt or demolished. But the current demolition methods are not safe enough, and the traditional building demolition project managing methods …

Examining The Effectiveness Of Older And Younger Adults' Strategies For Solving Interpersonal And Individual Everyday Problems, Joseph P. Mcfall
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Individual difference characteristics (i.e., age, gender, self-efficacy beliefs, exposure to problems) and contextual characteristics (i.e., problem domain) of the everyday problem-solving process were considered in an examination of individuals' strategy effectiveness. Although prior research has examined problem-solving strategy effectiveness according to independent judges or experts (Allaire & Marsiske, 2002; Blanchard-Fields, Mienaltowski, & Baldi, 2007; Cornelius & Caspi, 1987; Galambos, MacDonald, Naphtali, Cohen, & de Frias, 2005; Marsiske & Willis, 1995), methodological weaknesses in determining the effectiveness of the strategies may have invalidated the findings. A group of seven highly reliable expert raters were recruited to provide effectiveness ratings of strategies …

Inosine Ameliorates The Effects Of Hemin Induced Oxidative Stress In Broilers, Christen N. Seaman
Inosine Ameliorates The Effects Of Hemin Induced Oxidative Stress In Broilers, Christen N. Seaman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Previous studies have shown that chronic treatment of broilers with hemin decreases plasma concentrations of uric acid and increases leukocyte oxidative activity (LOA) whereas the inclusion of inosine produces an inverse effect. The objective of these studies was to determine whether or not inosine could serve as a potential therapy for oxidative stress. Oxidative stress was induced in broilers by the administration of hemin. Dietary inclusion of inosine was then begun either before the onset of oxidative stress induced by hemin, or as a post treatment once oxidative stress was established. Four-week-old broilers were individually banded and divided into four …

Effects Of Ovulation Of Aged Follicles, Pregnancy Diagnosis By Ultrasonography, And Treatments During Lactation On Reproduction In Ewes, Aimee Kathryn Wurst
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Ewes are polyestrous and litter-bearing seasonal breeders. Although average ovulation rates are sufficient, many ovulations do not result in live offspring and ewes normally breed only once per year. As ovulation rate increases, so does the number of ovulations not represented by live births. When ultrasonographic analysis is limited to ovarian follicles that grow from 3 to 5 mm, follicular waves can be identified in sheep. In most cases, ovulatory follicle(s) develop from the ultimate follicular wave; however, ovulatory follicles can be derived from penultimate or earlier follicular waves. The relationship between lifespan of large follicles and fertility is controversial …
