The Theoretical Separation Of Brand Equity And Brand Value: Managerial Implications For Strategic Planning, Randle D. Raggio, Robert P. Leone Jan 2007

The Theoretical Separation Of Brand Equity And Brand Value: Managerial Implications For Strategic Planning, Randle D. Raggio, Robert P. Leone

Marketing Faculty Publications

During the past 15 years, brand equity has been a priority topic for both practitioners and academics. In this paper, the authors propose a new framework for conceptualizing brand equity that distinguishes between brand equity, conceived of as an intrapersonal construct that moderates the impact of marketing activities, and brand value, which is the sale or replacement value of a brand. Such a distinction is important because, from a managerial perspective, the ultimate goal of brand management and brand equity research should be to understand how to leverage equity to create value.

Nelly Sachs (10 December 1891-12 May 1970), Kathrin M. Bower

Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications

Nelly Sachs was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1966 on her seventy-fifth birthday, a coincidence of dates that her father had been fond of noting during Sachs's girlhood in Berlin. In her acceptance speech, Sachs made reference to her father's annual teasing every December 10 and acknowledged that the award was like a dream come true. Nelly Sachs's work was largely unknown outside Germany and Sweden when the prize was announced; she had been writing in relative obscurity for almost two decades. Two literary awards she received in Germany in 1960 and in 1965 had earned her a …

Biofueling Rural Development: Making The Case For Linking Biofuel Production To Rural Revitalization, Jim Kleinschmidt Jan 2007

Biofueling Rural Development: Making The Case For Linking Biofuel Production To Rural Revitalization, Jim Kleinschmidt

Carsey Publications

Biofuels play a crucial role in America's quest for oil independence. In recent years, the biofuel industry has seen significant technology and efficiency advances, as well as expansions in the materials that can be used to create biofuels. Grains and oilseeds are limited in their ability to meet fuel needs, but a shift to biomass feedstocks offers better production possibilities. For rural communities, locally owned biomass refineries may offer promise of new investment, job growth, and revitalization.

Environmental Law In The "New" Supreme Court, Robert Abrams Jan 2007

Environmental Law In The "New" Supreme Court, Robert Abrams

Journal Publications

In the 2006 term the United States Supreme Court issued plenary decisions in four environmental cases. As is usually the case, all four environmental cases that reached the Supreme Court presented nuanced questions of statutory interpretation, most of which were intertwined with administrative law issues. The decisions this term are of unusual importance, as all have significant aspects, either practical, precedential, or attitudinal. Additionally, two of the cases exhibit the 5-4 cleavage, so common in this term's decisions, in which Justice Kennedy is the outcome-determinative swing voter. On unusual occasions there are environmental cases decided by the Supreme Court that …

Climate Change, The United States, And The Impacts Of Arctic Melting: A Case Study In The Need For Enforceable International Environmental Human Rights, Randall S. Abate Jan 2007

Climate Change, The United States, And The Impacts Of Arctic Melting: A Case Study In The Need For Enforceable International Environmental Human Rights, Randall S. Abate

Journal Publications

Climate change is currently the most significant and daunting international environmental problem, with disproportionate and devastating impacts on indigenous groups. The plight of the Inuit is illustrative of a larger need to recognize and enforce international environmental human rights violations. Part I of this Article examines the evolution of various approaches to environmental human rights theories in (1) United States law, (2) international human rights law instruments, and (3) the laws of other nations. Part II considers the scientific evidence and legal theory underlying the Inuit petition before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and explores how this scenario underscores …

Adam Smith And Poverty, Jonathan B. Wight Jan 2007

Adam Smith And Poverty, Jonathan B. Wight

English Faculty Publications

Can we end poverty in America? Does economic theory offer a solution? Humility would be a good starting place, because systemic problems like generational poverty rarely stem from single causes. Putting the broken pieces together is difficult when some edges are sharp, some are shattered, and others missing. This essay draws on insights from Adam Smith in order to examine the problem of poverty. It focuses on a case study involving Serena Robins (the real names have been altered).

Women In Mathematics: Motivating Factors For Doctorates In Academia Versus Professionals In The Actuarial Sciences, Diane Elizabeth Hendrix Jan 2007

Women In Mathematics: Motivating Factors For Doctorates In Academia Versus Professionals In The Actuarial Sciences, Diane Elizabeth Hendrix

All Volumes (2001-2008)

The topic under investigation is women in math-related careers and the motivating factors. Two careers, college professors and actuaries, were selected from the many math-related careers because both require advanced studies in mathematics. They also provide a contrast: one is in the business world while the other is in the world of academia. The purpose of this research is to determine if the numbers of women in upper level mathematics and these two careers are increasing. To accomplish this we first analyze women’s enrollment in mathematical programs from high school through graduate school from 1965-1995 in order to assess the …

Appalachian Stereotypes And Mountain Top Removal, Jill M. Fraley Jan 2007

Appalachian Stereotypes And Mountain Top Removal, Jill M. Fraley

Scholarly Articles

The fight to save Appalachia from absolute devastation by mining companies has, thus far, been a losing battle. As the photographs recently published in Vanity Fair and Audubon so vividly proclaim, Appalachia—the great hidden forest of the United States—is still being laid to waste, mile by mile, despite the work of valiant activists. Although there have been numerous obstacles, the primary reason for failure is wrapped up in the image of Appalachia in the public consciousness. This single hurdle—the image of Appalachia—stands behind, buttressing numerous obstacles to ending mountain top removal mining.

The Impact Of Human Gene Patents On Innovation And Access: Survey Of Human Gene Patent Litigation, Christopher M. Holman Jan 2007

The Impact Of Human Gene Patents On Innovation And Access: Survey Of Human Gene Patent Litigation, Christopher M. Holman

Faculty Works

In 2005, an article in the highly influential journal Science reported that roughly 20% of human genes are patented. This figure has been widely cited and at times over-interpreted. For example, a popular science fiction author warns the public that their bodies are "owned" by someone else. A bill was introduced in Congress in 2007 that would essentially seek to ban the patenting of DNA. The bill appears motivated in part by a perception that one-fifth of our genes are owned by somebody else, that these owners can do whatever they want with these genes, and that there is "nothing …

The Trials Of Lenny Bruce, Douglas O. Linder Jan 2007

The Trials Of Lenny Bruce, Douglas O. Linder

Faculty Works

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Lenny Bruce was the spirit of hipness and rebellion. His underdog, idealistic humor took on every American sacred cow, from capitalism to organized religion to sexual mores. Fans were attracted to Bruce's dark sexiness and brutal honesty. Kenneth Tyson described Bruce as fully, quiveringly conscious. Bruce's rise to the status of cultural icon began in the mid-1950s in the strip clubs of southern California where Bruce began to develop the iconoclastic edginess that would be his trademark. In his autobiography, "How to Talk Dirty and Influence People", Bruce described the importance of the …

Effects Of General Incidence And Polymer Joining On Nucleated Polymerization In A Model Of Prion Proliferation, Meredith L. Greer, P Van Den Driessche, Lin Wang, G. F. Webb

All Faculty Scholarship

Two processes are incorporated into a new model for transmissible prion diseases. These are general incidence for the lengthening process of infectious polymers attaching to and converting noninfectious monomers, and the joining of two polymers to form one longer polymer. The model gives rise to a system of three ordinary differential equations, which is shown to exhibit threshold behavior dependent on the value of the parameter combination giving the basic reproduction number R0. For R00 >1, the system is locally asymptotic to a positive disease equilibrium. The effect of both general incidence and joining is to …

The Trial Of John W. Hinckley, Jr., Douglas O. Linder Jan 2007

The Trial Of John W. Hinckley, Jr., Douglas O. Linder

Faculty Works

The verdict of not guilty for reason of insanity in the 1982 trial of John Hinckley, Jr. for his attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan stunned and outraged many Americans. An ABC News poll taken the day after the verdict showed 83% of those polled thought justice was not done in the Hinckley case. Some people - without much evidence - attributed the verdict to an anti-Reagan bias on the part the Washington, D. C. jury of eleven blacks and one white. Many more people, however, blamed a legal system that they claimed made it too easy for juries to …

This Article provides a description of the events leading up to the workshop, the discussion that took place, and the proposal that emerged. The proposal is intended to be a discussion document rather than a final product. It needs greater detail, a clearer sense of its costs and financing mechanisms, and input from stakeholders. Nevertheless, the workshop participants believe that Medicover may be a viable option for helping to solve the current health care crisis.
