Evaluation Of The Selective Nitrogen Oxides Recirculation Technique Using Activated Carbon., Andrew James Zimmerman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A research program conducted at West Virginia University’s Engine and Emissions Research Laboratory focused on the reduction of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) formed by stationary lean burn natural gas engines. The project was sponsored by the US Department of Energy through the Advanced Reciprocating Engine Systems (ARES) program under contract number, DE-FC26-02NT41608. NOx gases are harmful to the environment as well as poisonous to people. When a natural gas engine operates, many products are released in the exhaust stream including but not limited to CO, CO2, NOx, and unburned hydrocarbons. These products are released directly into the atmosphere unless first …

Children Exposed To Intimate Partner Violence: Exploring Factors That Promote Resiliency., Kimberly P. Foley Jan 2007

Children Exposed To Intimate Partner Violence: Exploring Factors That Promote Resiliency., Kimberly P. Foley

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

An estimated 3.3 (Carlson, 1984) to 10 million (Straus, 1992) children are exposed to intimate partner violence per year. Exposure to IPV has been shown to have a profound impact upon children’s cognitive, behavioral, and emotional functioning. Until recently, the majority of research examining children’s experiences of IPV approached the field from a deficits perspective; choosing to examine the negative impacts IPV had upon children. This study instead explored the effects of IPV upon children from a resiliency perspective; choosing to examine the adaptive functioning children displayed despite experiencing this trauma. This study explored previously identified constructs such as maternal …

Mapping The Gods: A Geographic Analysis Of The Effects Of The Shrine Merger Policy On Japanese Sacred Space., Christopher M. Todd

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Sacred space is a critical cultural construction of all religions. It is within this space that people are able to commune with deities and step out of the common, profane world. Japanese Shinto sacred space has undergone many changes throughout its history. One of the largest alterations was the introduction of the Shrine Merger Policy in 1906. Across the nation, thousands of shrines were demolished and merged under governmental authorization. The goal of this study is to map the shrine change from before the policy to after to determine areas of change. An emphasis on centrality from the capital in …

Heat Shock Protein 90: A Potential Therapeutic Target In Leukemic Progenitor And Stem Cells Harboring Mutant Bcr-Abl Resistant To Kinase Inhibitors, C Peng, Dongguang Li, L Shaoguang

Research outputs pre 2011

Development of drug resistance has become a major obstacle for tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) in the treatment of Philadelphia chromosome-positive (Ph+) chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) and other cancers. The BCR-ABL-T315I mutant does not respond to clinically available TKIs, although some newly developed anti-BCR-ABL-T315I TKIs are now being tested in patients. TKIs transiently inhibit kinase activity of BCR-ABL, but do not reduce the level of the BCR-ABL protein. Elimination of mutant BCR-ABL protein would provide a new therapeutic strategy for treating Ph+ leukemia. We recently showed that inhibition of heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) by a novel Hsp90 inhibitor, IPI-504, causes …

Critiquing The School Community: A Qualitative Study Of Children's Conceptualization Of Their School, Julie Ann Pooley, Lauren Breen, Lisbeth T. Pike, Lynne Cohen, Neil M. Drew

Research outputs pre 2011

Schools are traditionally seen as responsible for the educational outcomes of our children. However, schools also play an important role in the development of aspects such as selfefficacy, participation, competence and self-determination. As schools are often run as societies rather than communities, they offer little opportunity for these attributes (selfefficacy, participation, competence and self-determination) to develop. Forty-six children aged from nine to 12 years were interviewed to ascertain their conceptualizations of the school community. The children define their school in terms of people, places for activities and interaction, a place for safety, cooperation, influence and functionality. The responses closely align …

Cylindrical Quasi-Cavity Waveguide For Static Wide Angle Pattern Projection, Kaveh Sahba, Kamal Alameh, Clifton Smith, Arie Paap

Research outputs pre 2011

Beam deflection methods such as rotary mirrors and motorized turning optical heads suffer from a variety of electro-mechanical related problems which affect laser scanning performance. These include wobble, jitter, wear, windage and synchronization issues. A novel optical structure consisting of two concentric and cylindrical interfaces with unique optical coating properties for the static projection of a laser spot array over a wide angle is demonstrated. The resulting ray trajectory through the waveguide is modeled using linear equations. Spot size growth is modeled using previously defined ray transfer matrices for tilted optical elements. The model is validated by comparison with experimental …

Reliability Of Kinematics And Kinetics Associated With Horizontal Single Leg Drop Jump Assessment: A Brief Report, M. Stalbom, D.J. Holm, John Cronin, J.W.L. Keogh

Research outputs pre 2011

Determining the reliability of a unilateral horizontal drop jump for displacement provided the focus for this research. Eighteen male subjects were required to step off a 20cm box and land on a force plate with one leg and thereafter jump for maximal horizontal displacement on two different days. Dependent variables from the jump assessment included mean and peak vertical (V) and horizontal (H) ground reaction forces (GRF) and impulses, horizontal displacement and contact time. The between-trial variability of all kinematic and kinetic measures was less than 7%. The most consistent measure over both trials was the horizontal displacement jumped (1.2 …

A Gui For The Deaf-Blind: An Additional Concepts Paper, David Veal

Research outputs pre 2011

People with some residual vision though still classified as blind may be able to read on screen patterns presented via a computer program whereby such a pattern can represent a textual character and a presentation of sequences of such patterns can represent words. These patterns can be adjusted to utilize the user’s remaining vision capacity. Previous research has shown that volunteers who where legally classified as blind could read simple sentences via such a system. This system is known as the Dynamic Pattern System (DPS) and is a test bed for research. Although this research involved a single pattern represented …

It Devices And Energy Consumption, David Veal

Research outputs pre 2011

The need for energy conservation has been topical for many years and has gained importance with global warming scenarios and the increasing cost of energy. This paper examines energy consumption of common home IT devices such as routers, voice boxes, PCs and printers with respect to minimising standby power. Another problem of concern in energy usage as related to IT activity is the increasing electrical power consumption levels of data centres, along with data centre cooling problems and the attempts to enhance their energy efficiency. These scenarios illustrate small amounts of energy consumption used by vast numbers of device compared …

Fibre Bragg Grating Sensors For Acoustic Emission And Transmission Detection Applied To Robotic Nde In Structural Health Monitoring, Graham Wild, Steven Hinckley Jan 2007

Fibre Bragg Grating Sensors For Acoustic Emission And Transmission Detection Applied To Robotic Nde In Structural Health Monitoring, Graham Wild, Steven Hinckley

Research outputs pre 2011

Distributed acoustic emission sensors are used in structural health monitoring (SHM) for the detection of impacts and/or strain, in real time. Secondary damage may result from the initial impact or strain. This damage may include surface pitting, erosion, or cracking. This type of damage may not be detectable by the SHM system, specifically in passive fiber optic based sensing systems. The integration of non-destructive evaluation (NDE) by robots into SHM enables the detection and monitoring of a wider variety of damage. Communicating via acoustic transmissions represents a wireless communications method for use by NDE inspection robots to communicate with an …

Providing Qos For Symmetrical Voice/Video Traffic In Wireless Networks, Justin Wyatt, Daryoush Habibi, Iftekhar Ahmad, Hushairi Zen

Research outputs pre 2011

Voice over IP (VoIP) and voice-video over IP (VIoIP) are becoming very popular and widespread. These types of real-time services produce streams that are almost symmetrical in nature. A new token passing media access control (MAC) developed by our group, called wireless token network (WTN), has been designed with QoS guarantees in mind. We have previously shown in our previous paper (2006) that WTN supports a higher number of VoIP clients compared to 802.11e due to its higher channel efficiency. In this paper we show that WTN also provides superior QoS for bidirectional streams such as VIoIP due to a …

Profiling Through A Digital Mobile Device, Lee Fueng Yap, Andrew Jones

Research outputs pre 2011

Mobile digital devices have evolved from telecommunications device to a lifestyle product over the years. These devices are used in all aspects of our daily life. As a result, more information is stored within the devices. Unprotected mobile digital device is susceptible to privacy invasion attack when the device falls into the wrong hand of any unscrupulous third party. The main objective of this paper is to provide an implication analysis on the possible risks of information leakage through digital mobile devices, in the case when users forget to, or choose never to apply any security protection to their devices

Adaptive Segregation-Based Mac Protocol For Real-Time Multimedia Traffic In Wlans, Hushairi Zen, Daryoush Habibi, Alexander Rassau, Justin Wyatt Jan 2007

Adaptive Segregation-Based Mac Protocol For Real-Time Multimedia Traffic In Wlans, Hushairi Zen, Daryoush Habibi, Alexander Rassau, Justin Wyatt

Research outputs pre 2011

Wireless local area networks (WLANs) have become very popular both in private and public sectors. Despite the fast expansion of WLANs in various environments, quality of service (QoS) issues for multimedia applications in WLANs are not yet resolved. Multimedia applications contain traffic that are sensitive to delay and jitter and therefore a best-effort protocol such as the legacy IEEE 802.11 is not suitable. The 802.11e protocol provides prioritization and classification of traffic to offer better QoS for real-time services. However, it leaves the design and implementation of many important optimization features to vendors. In this paper we introduce a mechanism …

Rerouting Technique For Faster Restoration Of Preempted Calls, Iftekhar Ahmad, Joarder Kamruzzaman, Daryoush Habibi Jan 2007

Rerouting Technique For Faster Restoration Of Preempted Calls, Iftekhar Ahmad, Joarder Kamruzzaman, Daryoush Habibi

Research outputs pre 2011

In a communication network where resources are shared between instantaneous request (IR) and book-ahead (BA) connections, activation of future BA connections causes preemption of many on-going IR connections upon resource scarcity. A solution to this problem is to reroute the preempted calls via alternative feasible paths, which often does not ensure acceptably low disruption of service. In this paper, a new rerouting strategy is proposed that uses the destination node to initiate the rerouting and thereby reduces the rerouting time, which ultimately improves the service disruption time. Simulations on a widely used network topology suggest that the proposed rerouting scheme …

This paper presents a short-distance reconfigurable high-speed optical interconnects architecture employing a Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) array, Opto-very-large-scale-integrated (Opto-VLSI) processors, and a photodetector (PD) array. The core component of the architecture is the Opto-VLSI processor which can be driven by digital phase steering and multicasting holograms that reconfigure the optical interconnects between the input and output ports. The optical interconnects architecture is experimentally demonstrated at 2.5 Gbps using high-speed 1×3 VCSEL array and 1×3 photoreceiver array in conjunction with two 1×4096 pixel Opto-VLSI processors. The minimisation of the crosstalk between the output ports is achieved by appropriately aligning …

Network Engineering For C-Commerce Innovation: The Role Of Trust, Mark Brogan, Leisa Armstrong Jan 2007

Network Engineering For C-Commerce Innovation: The Role Of Trust, Mark Brogan, Leisa Armstrong

Research outputs pre 2011

The idea that social networks play an important role in knowledge diffusion of innovation has a long pedigree in innovation theory. In his Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) theory, Rogers (1995) argued that in the information network of the organization, managerial champions and opinion leaders could affect both organizational acceptance and also the velocity of adoption of innovation. In Small to Medium Enterprise (SME) C-commerce innovation, the role of such social factors has been understood in terms of ‘embedded network structure’ (Braun, 2003) that impacts on clustering behavior. This article explores the use of quantitative Social Network Analysis (SNA) to model …

Optimization Of Liquid-Crystal Spatial Light Modulator For Precise Phase Generation, Seow-Hwang Eng, Dong Mei Cai, Zhenglin Wang, Kamal Alameh, Wenhan Jiang

Research outputs pre 2011

Spatial light modulators (SLMs) are recently emerging as wavefront generation or reconstruction devices. In this paper, we use a liquid-crystal SLM (LC-SLM) as a wavefront generation device through the modulation of the spatial phase distribution of an incident light beam. We characterize the phase modulation performance of the LC-SLM, and identified a polarization-configuration to minimize its amplitude modulation effects in order to maximize the contrast of reconstructed phase holograms. We also investigated the feasibility of determining the optical surface uniformity of the LC-SLM through computations of the interference fringes, and identified the disadvantages of this method. This new approach may …

The design, operation, and characterization of CMOS imagers implemented using: 1) "regular" CMOS wafers with a 0.5-mum CMOS analog process; 2) "regular" CMOS wafers with a 0.35-mum CMOS analog process; and 3) silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafers in conjunction with a 0.35-mum CMOS analog process, are discussed in this paper. The performances of the studied imagers are compared in terms of quantum efficiency, dark current, and optical bandwidth. It is found that there is strong dependence of quantum efficiency of the photodiodes on the architecture of the image sensor. The results of this paper are useful for designing and modeling CMOS/SOI image …

Experimental Demonstration Of A Dynamic 10gbit/S Wdm Header/Label Recognition Structure, Muhsen Aljada, Kamal Alameh, Byeong Ha Lee, Yong Tak Lee, Kiegon Im, Se-Jong Baik Jan 2007

Experimental Demonstration Of A Dynamic 10gbit/S Wdm Header/Label Recognition Structure, Muhsen Aljada, Kamal Alameh, Byeong Ha Lee, Yong Tak Lee, Kiegon Im, Se-Jong Baik

Research outputs pre 2011

In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate a dynamic wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) header/label recognition structure that processes on-the-fly WDM patterns. An opto-VLSI processor is used to dynamically generate digital phase holograms that control the wavelength components of the label/header to create digital wavelength profiles. An autocorrelation function of a high-peak is generated when a label bit pattern matches a digital wavelength profile. The main attractive feature of using an opto-VLSI processor is that the lookup table of matching digital wavelength profiles does not need modification when the data bit-rate is upgraded. The dynamic pattern recognition structure is experimentally demonstrated at 10 Gbit/s …

Experimental Demonstration Of A Tunable Laser Using An Soa And An Opto-Vlsi Processor, Muhsen Aljada, Rong Zheng, Kamal Alameh, Yong Lee Jan 2007

Experimental Demonstration Of A Tunable Laser Using An Soa And An Opto-Vlsi Processor, Muhsen Aljada, Rong Zheng, Kamal Alameh, Yong Lee

Research outputs pre 2011

In this paper we propose and experimentally demonstrate a tunable laser structure cascading a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) that generates broadband amplified spontaneous emission and a reflective Opto-VLSI processor that dynamically reflects arbitrarily wavelengths and injects them back into the SOA, thus synthesizing an output signal of variable wavelength. The wavelength tunablility is performed using digital phase holograms uploaded on the Opto-VLSI processor. Experimental results demonstrate a tuning range from 1524nm to 1534nm, and show that the proposed tunable laser structure has a stable performance.

There is a growing shortfall of graduates entering the IT profession. The situation is exacerbated by the continuing decline in the number of women undertaking IT related degrees. However, there are an increasing number of students taking business degrees that have a small information systems component, although few students choose to major in IS. Using a qualitative reflective approach we identify the perceptions and experiences of female undergraduates taking introductory IS courses in two universities, one in Australia and one in New Zealand. We discuss ways of improving the delivery of introductory IS courses in order to make information systems …

Information Governance: A Model For Security In Medical Practice, Patricia Williams Jan 2007

Information Governance: A Model For Security In Medical Practice, Patricia Williams

Research outputs pre 2011

Information governance is becoming an important aspect of organisational accountability. In consideration that information is an integral asset of most organisations, the protection of this asset will increasingly rely on organisational capabilities in security. In the medical arena this information is primarily sensitive patient-based information'. Previous research has shown that application of security measures is a low priority for primary care medical practice and that awareness of the risks are seriously underestimated. Consequently, information security governance will be a key issue for medical practice in the future. Information security governance is a relatively new term ,and there is little existing …

Passive And Active Optical Bit-Pattern Recognition Structures For Multiwavelength Optical Packet Switching Networks, Muhsen Aljada, Kamal Alameh Jan 2007

Passive And Active Optical Bit-Pattern Recognition Structures For Multiwavelength Optical Packet Switching Networks, Muhsen Aljada, Kamal Alameh

Research outputs pre 2011

Next generation High-Speed optical packet switching networks require components capable of recognising the optical header to enable on-the-fly accurate switching of incoming data packets to their destinations. This paper experimentally demonstrates a comparison between two different optical header recognition structures; A passive structure based on the use of Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs), whereas the active structure employs Opto-VLSI processors that synthesise dynamic wavelength profile through digital phase holograms. The structures are experimentally demonstrated at 10Gbps. Performance comparison between the two structures is also discussed. These optical header recognition structures are attractive for multiwavelength optical network and applications.
