Evaluating The Effect Of Two Commercial Antimicrobial Products On Salmonella Spp. In The Aquatic Habitat Of The Red-Eared Slider Turtle (Trachemys Scripta Elegans), Trevor Theadore Zachariah

LSU Master's Theses

Turtle-associated salmonellosis was recognized as a public health concern in the 1960’s, particularly due to an increase in the incidence of disease among children. In response to the public health threat, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) implemented regulations in 1975 restricting the sale of turtle eggs and turtles with a carapace length less than 10.2 cm. Since that time, attempts to eliminate Salmonella from turtles using antibiotics have been unsuccessful and lead to antibiotic resistant strains of Salmonella on turtle farms. Recent work has focused on identifying non-antibiotic products to suppress or eliminate Salmonella and reverse the …

An Assessment Of The Risk Mapping System For The Use Of Managing Loblolly Pine Decline Sites Within Red-Cockaded Woodpecker Habitat, Roger Dale Menard Jan 2007

An Assessment Of The Risk Mapping System For The Use Of Managing Loblolly Pine Decline Sites Within Red-Cockaded Woodpecker Habitat, Roger Dale Menard

LSU Master's Theses

A decline of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.), characterized by expanding areas of declining and dead trees, has become prevalent at Fort Benning, Georgia. A 3 year study was conducted to determine the kinds of fungi, insects, and site disturbances associated with this problem. The insects Dendroctonus terebrans, Hylastes salebrosus, Hylastes tenuis, Pachylobius picivorus and Hylobius pales were significantly more abundant in symptomatic than in asymptomatic loblolly pine plots. These root and lower stem-infesting insects consistently carried the fungi Leptographium terebrantis, L. procerum, and L. serpens. Root sampling revealed high levels of root damage and mortality, staining and infection with …

Assessment Of Dynamic Contrast Enhanced Mri For The Early Detection Of Treatment Response In Human Advanced Hepato-Cellular Carcinoma, Yun Jiang

All ETDs from UAB

Dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) has been shown to be a potentially useful tool for early prediction of tumor response to antiangiogenesis agents. In this study, the technique was used to evaluate the chemotherapeutic drug doxorubicin with or without the tyrosine kinase inhibitor sorafenib in patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Five male patients (ages 50 to 78 years, average age 67  8 years) were studied with serial T1-weighted DCE-MRI to measure the alteration of perfusion parameters of tumors in response to the treatment. All patients received doxorubicin at dose of 60 mg/m2 intravenously every 21 days. Among …

The Combined Effect Of Formalin Fixation And Individual Steps In Tissue Processing On Immunorecognition, Dennis Otali Jan 2007

The Combined Effect Of Formalin Fixation And Individual Steps In Tissue Processing On Immunorecognition, Dennis Otali

All ETDs from UAB

Because of many unanswered questions in this area, we investigated the effects of formalin fixation and the steps in tissue processing on immunohistochemical detection of specific antigen-antibody combinations of two cell cycle markers; proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and Ki67/MIB-1. As a model to study these effects, we used cultured cells fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin (NBF) alone and fixed in 10% NBF plus separately, the alcohols, xylene and paraffin used in each individual step in tissue processing. We found that in staining for PCNA, a proliferation antigen requires some fixation but that fixation with 10% NBF does not …

Grassroots Policy Prescription: A Case Study In Light Pollution And Night Sky Preservation And Natural Resource Policy Making, Brandi L. Smith

All ETDs from UAB

The grassroots path to public policy is characterized by citizen pressure on policy makers to produce desired change and has been especially successful in the realm of natural resources. It has proven successful in the obtainment of various local and state level policy to control light pollution in the United States. Light pollution, defined as misdirected, obtrusive, or unwanted man-made outdoor lighting is a modern phenomenon that, among other effects, is resulting in the rapid loss of visible starscape throughout the world. Independent grassroots-initiated policies have sprung up around the globe in attempt to control light pollution. The present thesis …

Five Mile Creek Bioassessment Study: Baseline Evaluation Of Stream Health Using Fish Communities, Louis David Viamonte Jan 2007

Five Mile Creek Bioassessment Study: Baseline Evaluation Of Stream Health Using Fish Communities, Louis David Viamonte

All ETDs from UAB

During the fall of 2005 and spring of 2006, habitat assessments and rapid bioassessments were conducted at six sites on 100 m reaches on Five Mile Creek in Jefferson County, Alabama and two sites on neighboring rural streams that were used as references. Habitat scores and index of biotic integrity (IBI) scores for the fish communities were calculated for all sites. The IBI scores on Five Mile Creek did not compare well with one of the reference streams and suggest impairment. The habitat scores for the Five Mile Creek sites were similar to the scores of the reference streams. The …

Visualizing The Function And Migration Of T Cells, Kari J. Dugger Jan 2007

Visualizing The Function And Migration Of T Cells, Kari J. Dugger

All ETDs from UAB

Lymphocytes are highly mobile cells that can travel throughout the body in response to a multitude of stimuli. Identifying lymphocyte trafficking patterns in vivo is essential for a complete understanding of immune function. Cell-cell and cell-tissue interactions in immune development and in lymphocyte response to stimuli can be comprehended with these investigations. Although the location of cell populations in various tissues at any given point in time may be investigated by techniques such as flow cytometry and immunofluorescence, these methods are not easily used in the assessment of dynamic cell migration patterns in vivo. In the past years, technologies for …

The Role Of Chloride In The Volume Regulation Of Human Glioma Cells, Nola Jean Ernest Jan 2007

The Role Of Chloride In The Volume Regulation Of Human Glioma Cells, Nola Jean Ernest

All ETDs from UAB

According to the Central Brain Tumor Registry of the United States, the most common primary brain tumors are gliomas, tumors composed of cells of glial origin, most commonly astrocytes and oligodendrocytes. The most aggressive of these tumors are characterized by hyperproliferation, marked cellular and nuclear atypia, extensive infiltration into surrounding normal brain tissue, and large areas of cell and tissue death. Previous data published by our lab and others suggest that these biological processes may involve regulated cell volume changes. Using cell volume regulation in the presence of an anisosmotic challenge as a model for cell swelling and shrinkage, cell …

The Decision To Move: An Analysis Of Factors That Influence African Americans In The Ghetto, Lonnie Hannon

All ETDs from UAB

The decision to move among African Americans in a poor community encom-passes individual, household, and neighborhood characteristics. Previous research fo-cuses on the frequently studied middle class. Meanwhile substantive analyses on African Americans from poor communities remain largely understudied. The current study uses data from a low income African American community to study residential mobility deci-sions. A systematic, random sample of respondents completed a survey concerning their residential situation. Data were triangulated to add reliability and richness to the find-ings. The results show that the decision to move is not a function of residential satisfac-tion, but is influenced by neighborhood and …

An Examination Of African American College Students' Knowledge And Attitudes Regarding Sickle Cell Disease And Sickle Cell Disease Carrier Testing: A Mixed Methods Study, Kai Anika Stewart

All ETDs from UAB

Approximately, 80,000 Americans are affected by sickle cell disease (SCD) and it is the most common inherited blood disorder in the United States. SCD is most prevalent among individuals of African, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and Asian Indian ancestry; however, statistics suggest that in the United States, African Americans are disproportionately affected by SCD (Sickle Cell Disease Association of America (SCDAA), 2007). Nearly, 1 in 400 African Americans is born with SCD; in addition, 1 in 12 African Americans is born with sickle cell trait (SCT) (National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), 2007). Two carriers of the trait have a 25% …

Deprofessionalization Of The Corporate Optometrist? Contrasting Characteristics Of The Bureaucratic And Professional Models, R Michael Taylor Jan 2007

Deprofessionalization Of The Corporate Optometrist? Contrasting Characteristics Of The Bureaucratic And Professional Models, R Michael Taylor

All ETDs from UAB

This study will investigate whether professional status differs between corporate and noncorporate optometrists by comparing their levels of autonomy, income, and job satisfaction. According to Freidson’s ideal model, a professional maintains high levels of autonomy and income but the opposite is usually true for employees of Weber’s traditional bureaucracy. Bureaucracies employ formally rational processes such as hierarchical decision-making and limited employee profit sharing which have affects on healthcare professional independence. The primary objective of many American corporations is to maximize profits for shareholders. While the health professional also strives to maximize profits, this objective is often balanced with an ethical …

Importance Of Trnalys,3 Structure And Use In Gag Translation For Primer Selection Required For Replication Of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type I, Wanfeng Yu Jan 2007

Importance Of Trnalys,3 Structure And Use In Gag Translation For Primer Selection Required For Replication Of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type I, Wanfeng Yu

All ETDs from UAB

The features of tRNALys,3 that dictate why human immunodeficiency virus exclu-sively selects this tRNA as the primer for initiation of reverse transcription is unknown. The post-transcriptional modification at nucleotide 58 in the TΨC stem-loop could play a role during plus-strand synthesis to stop reverse transcriptase from re-copying the tRNA primer. Nucleotides 53 and 54 within the TΨC stem loop of the tRNA have been shown to be important to form the complex between tRNA and the HIV-1 viral genome during initiation of reverse transcription. To further delineate the features of the TΨC stem loop in tRNALys,3 in reverse transcription, we …

Our Other Reproductive Choices: Equality In Sex Education, Contraceptive Access, And Work-Family Policy, Cornelia T. Pillard Jan 2007

Our Other Reproductive Choices: Equality In Sex Education, Contraceptive Access, And Work-Family Policy, Cornelia T. Pillard

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Reproductive rights are traditionally understood to be protected by the privacy aspect of the due process liberty guarantee, but equal protection is also at the heart of the matter. Many of us intuitively know the close relationship between sex equality and abortion rights, and the law, too, is starting to reflect it. This Symposium broadens the focus of traditional abortion-rights jurisprudence to develop equality-based analyses of abortion rights. Widening the angle even further, this Article looks at sex equality and reproductive rights issues beyond the core right to abortion . . . To highlight some of the opportunities created by …

Technology Unbound: Will Funded Libertarianism Dominate The Future?, Steven Goldberg Jan 2007

Technology Unbound: Will Funded Libertarianism Dominate The Future?, Steven Goldberg

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The panel decision in Abigail Alliance, which found a constitutional right to use certain medicines that have not received Food and Drug Administration approval, may not survive further review, but it already stands as an important signpost on the road to further deregulation of the drug market. This trend mirrors the evolution of the in vitro fertilization (IVF) industry which is remarkably unregulated although it raises numerous ethical and consumer protection issues. These developments share an obvious libertarian underpinning, but in both cases it is an odd sort of libertarianism, because proponents of unmediated access to drugs and IVF also …

Epizootiology Of Quahog Parasite Unknown (Qpx) Disease In Northern Quahogs (=Hard Clams) Mercenaria Mercenaria, M. Maille Lyons, Roxanna Smolowitz, Marta Gomez-Chiarri

Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications

The economically important marine bivalve mollusc, Mercenaria mercenaria, (commonly called a northern quahog or hard clam), has endured considerable mortalities caused by a thraustochytrid pathogen called Quahog Parasite X (QPX). Data on the percent prevalence of QPX infections were compiled from published reports along with our data to describe the epizootiology of QPX disease.QPX infections occurred in clams collected from both cultured beds and wild populations, but a higher percentage of QPX cases (76.5%) were from cultured clam beds. In addition, samples from cultured beds had a significantly higher prevalence (29.2 ± 27.2%) of QPX infections compared with samples from …

"I Ain't Takin' No Plea": The Challenges In Counseling Young People Facing Serious Time, Abbe Smith Jan 2007

"I Ain't Takin' No Plea": The Challenges In Counseling Young People Facing Serious Time, Abbe Smith

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Criminal defendants daily entrust their liberty to the skill of their lawyers. The consequences of the lawyer’s decisions fall squarely upon the defendant. There is nothing untoward in this circumstance. To the contrary, the lawyer as the defendant’s representative is at the core of our adversary process.

As practicing lawyers know, interviewing and counseling are at the heart of legal representation. This is what lawyers do, even trial lawyers: we talk with and advise clients. As criminal lawyers know, the decision whether to go to trial is “the most important single decision” a client faces, and requires wise counsel. …

Due Process Land Use Claims After Lingle, J. Peter Byrne Jan 2007

Due Process Land Use Claims After Lingle, J. Peter Byrne

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The Supreme Court held in Lingle v. Chevron U.S.A. Inc. that challenges to the validity of land use regulations for failing to advance governmental interests must be brought under the Due Process Clause, rather than the Takings Clause, and must be evaluated under a deferential standard. This Article analyzes and evaluates the probable course of such judicial review, and concludes that federal courts will resist due process review of land use decisions for good reasons but not always with an adequate doctrinal explanation. However, state courts can use due process review to provide state level supervision of local land use …

Student Pilots Model Code Of Conduct, Aviators Code Initiative

Student Pilots Model Code of Conduct

The STUDENT PILOTSMODEL CODE OF CONDUCT (Code of Conduct) is not a standard and is not intended to be implemented as one. Instead, the Code of Conduct presents a vision of excellence for student pilots (whether they are seeking a Sport Pilot, Recreational Pilot, or Private Pilot certificate). Its principles complement and underscore legal requirements.
