Is It Necessary To Consider Obesity When Constructing Norms For Hemoglobin Or When Screening For Anemia Using Hemoglobin Levels?, Fahaid H. Al-Hashem

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: To assess the relationship of total adiposity and abdominal adiposity on hemoglobin levels in Saudi nonpregnant women. METHODS: We carried out this cross-sectional study during winter of 2002 (from January to March) in and around Abha city, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Included in the study were 530 non-pregnant women between the age of 18-65 years. The Use Of The Mmpi-A Short Form For Identifying Students With Emotionality In The Schools, Matthew Turner

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

This study investigated the utility of the MMPI-A short form described by Archer, Tirrell, and Elkins (2001) for detecting the presence of emotionality in adolescents in the school setting. Students were placed in one of three groups based on their performance on an established and frequently used self-report measure of personality, the Behavior Assessment System for Children-II (BASC- 2). Subjects who had significant elevations on one or more of the scales in Internalizing Index on the BASC-2 were placed in the Clinical group and subjects who had significant elevations on one or more of the scales the School Problems Index …

Existential Counselling Condensed In Fenelon's Spiritual Letters, Megan Levy Jan 2007

Existential Counselling Condensed In Fenelon's Spiritual Letters, Megan Levy

Theses

The findings of this research suggest a compatibility between Fenelon’s Spiritual Letters and Existential theories of personal growth. The Psychotherapy and Counselling Codes of Ethics in Australia, America, and England emphasize the importance of personal growth as an essential tool to ensure responsibility and quality in professional practice. Self-knowledge and self-development are consistent with the ethical principles of Fidelity, Autonomy, Beneficence, Non-maleficence, Justice, and Self-respect. Enriching self to deliver better quality and high ethical service in mental health should be seriously considered for both the trainee and the experienced psychotherapist. The similarities between Fenelon Spiritual Letters and Existential Psychotherapy may …

From Dream To Reality: A Study Of British Migration To Western Australia In The 1960s, With Special Emphasis On Those Who Travelled On The Ss Castel Felice, Hilda June Caunt

Theses

This work is a unique contribution to the history of Western Australia. Over a million people left the British Isles to migrate to Australia during the 1960s. One hundred thousand migrants, not all of whom were British, came on the Castel Felice, one of the many ships travelling between Europe and Australia in the post-war movement of peoples. My thesis addresses the question of what motivated those who left Britain to do so at that time, for in Britain there were improving housing conditions, generally full employment, an impressive national social security system and the active social experience of the …

Resistant Starch Does Not Reduce Body Fat In Rats Fed A High Fat Diet, Sasmita Tripathy Jan 2007

Resistant Starch Does Not Reduce Body Fat In Rats Fed A High Fat Diet, Sasmita Tripathy

LSU Master's Theses

This study examined the effects of resistant starch in a high fat diet (28% of energy) on body weight, abdominal fat, cecal weight and pH, serum gut peptide YY (PYY) and gene expression for PYY and proglucagon in male Sprague Dawley rats. Three groups of rats (8wk) were fed one of the following diets for ten wks: energy control (EC; 3.7 kcal/g), resistant starch (RS; 3.7 kcal/g) and fiber control (FC; 2.9 kcal/g). Results were classified as significant when p<0.05. The consumption of RS resulted in significant increases in cecal weight (full and empty), serum PYY, gene expression for PYY and proglucagon in cecum and significant decrease in pH in cecal contents compared to the other groups. However, the disemboweled body weight and abdominal fat for RS were not lower compared to the EC. In our previous studies, we observed that RS in a low fat diet (18% of energy), produced similar gut signaling, as in the current study, but reduced disemboweled body weight and abdominal fat compared to EC. The reason for the unexpected results needs further study. Since high fat diets have been shown to alter brain response to other satiety signals (leptin), a high fat diet might affect neuronal responses to PYY and GLP-1 signaling from the gut caused by dietary RS.
