Nad(P)H:Quinone Oxidoreductase (Nqo1)-Directed Lavendamycin Antitumor Agents: Structure-Based Design, Molecular Modeling And Structure-Activity Studies, Mary Hassani Jan 2007

Nad(P)H:Quinone Oxidoreductase (Nqo1)-Directed Lavendamycin Antitumor Agents: Structure-Based Design, Molecular Modeling And Structure-Activity Studies, Mary Hassani

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) is a two-electron reductase that catalyzes an NAD(P)H-dependent activation of many quinone-based antitumor agents. NQO1, expressed at high levels in many human solid tumors, can be used as a target for enzyme-directed bioreductive antitumor drug development. We hypothesized that lavendamycins, quinolinedione antitumor antibiotics, can be activated by NQO1 in cancer cells that overexpress NQO1 to exhibit selective toxicity toward those cells. The effects of functional group changes on the metabolism of lavendamycins by recombinant human NQO1 were studied using a spectrophotometric assay. These structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies determined key structural features that were required for lavendamycin …

Community Forestry Education In The Swan Valley, Mt: Contributions Of Northwest Connections' Field Program, Joanna Elizabeth Seibert

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

As the community forestry movement matures, a question remains regarding what kind of educational experience nurtures and inspires people in community forestry? This thesis seeks to contribute to a better understanding of community forestry education by examining a field educational program known as “Landscape and Livelihood” (LL) offered by Northwest Connections, a small community-based conservation organization in the upper Swan Valley of western Montana. Based on extensive interviews, observation and the author’s own personal experience as a former LL student, the thesis documents the program’s use of field ecological studies involving both scientific and local knowledge integrated with journaling, homestays, …

Examining The Relationship Of Physical Activity With Inflammation And Cardiovascular Disease Risk, Coral Michelle Gubler Jan 2007

Examining The Relationship Of Physical Activity With Inflammation And Cardiovascular Disease Risk, Coral Michelle Gubler

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) accounts for 37.1 percent of all deaths in the United States. Physical activity is inversely related to both CV event risk and to many of the individual CVD risk factors. The inverse relationship between physical activity and CVD risk is well established. However, much dispute remains about the optimal physical activity intensity and duration related to health benefits and to lower CVD risk. The ability to objectively measure intensity and duration may clarify the inverse relationship between physical activity and CVD. The purpose of this collection of studies was to explore the association of physical activity with …

Mris And The Perception Of Risk, Steven Goldberg Jan 2007

Mris And The Perception Of Risk, Steven Goldberg

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The most important safety decision concerning MRIs was to change the name of the procedure. In the late 1970s, the procedure known as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) became magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) because of the negative connotations the word “nuclear” invited. The change was understandable since MRIs do not expose patients to dangerous radiation: “nuclear” was in the original name because basic research on the atomic nucleus led to the development of MRIs. The main cost of the name change was to obscure the important link between basic research and useful medical technologies.

In recent years, however, MRIs, a generally …

Law As A Tool To Facilitate Healthier Lifestyles And Prevent Obesity, Lawrence O. Gostin Jan 2007

Law As A Tool To Facilitate Healthier Lifestyles And Prevent Obesity, Lawrence O. Gostin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Public health agencies face considerable challenges trying to prevent overweight and obesity in society, primarily because a person's own behavior is often the root cause of the disease. Individuals make personal choices about their diet, exercise, and lifestyle, so disease is often thought of as a matter of personal, not governmental, responsibility. This Commentary shows how law can be used as a tool to prevent overweight and obesity (see Table).

The tools discussed in this article include:

- Disclosure - e.g., labels and consumer information

- Tort liability - e.g., inadequate disclosure of risks, misleading advertisements, and targeting children

- …

Four Novel Co-Precipitation Procedures For The Synthesis Of Lanthanum-Strontium Manganites, Vuk Uskoković, Miha Drofenik Jan 2007

Four Novel Co-Precipitation Procedures For The Synthesis Of Lanthanum-Strontium Manganites, Vuk Uskoković, Miha Drofenik

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Lanthanum-strontium manganites were synthesized using co-precipitation method with a reverse micellar microemulsion. Either oxalic acid, sodium hydroxide or tetramethylammonium hydroxide was used for the precipitation of precursor cations in a form that was subsequently calcined under various conditions in order to obtain perovskite manganite phase. Correlations between the properties of the synthesized powder and the calcination conditions have been put forth. The properties of the microemulsion-assisted synthesized material were compared with the samples prepared by following the supposedly similar chemical recombinations in bulk solutions, with an aim to challenge the fact that microemulsions in general have only templating effects on …

The Canadian Assisted Human Reproduction Act: Protecting Women’S Health While Potentially Allowing Human Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer Into Non-Human Oocytes, Roxanne Mykitiuk, Jeff Nisker, Robyn Bluhm

Articles & Book Chapters

Caulfield and Bubela (2007) argue that the Canadian Assisted Human Reproduction Act (An Act Respecting Assisted Human Reproduction and Related Research (S.C. 2004, c.2) imposes a complete “criminal ban” on somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) that is unwarranted because, they contend, the ban was based on concerns regarding the moral status of the human embryo, which is inappropriate in a “pluralistic society.”

Do The Fiduciary Duties Of Pension Funds Hinder Socially Responsible Investment?, Benjamin J. Richardson Jan 2007

Do The Fiduciary Duties Of Pension Funds Hinder Socially Responsible Investment?, Benjamin J. Richardson

Articles & Book Chapters

In recent years, pension funds and other institutional investors have begun to give more attention to the environmental and social behaviour of the companies in which they invest. A recent movement for socially responsible investment (SRI) seeks to exclude companies that pollute or ignore human rights, for example, and to champion those that behave ethically and responsibly. However, some confusion among investment decision- makers persists about the extent to which their fiduciary duties to beneficiaries allow policies that may sacrifice financial returns for environmental or other philanthropic causes. This is compounded by the belief that they cannot secure the best …

Trips And Trips Plus Impacts In Africa, Ikechi Mgbeoji

Articles & Book Chapters

The emergence of the World Trade Organization (WTO) as the juridical framework for global trade is one of the most fundamental changes in the second half of the last cenrury. No less epochal is the linkage of intellectual property rights (hereafter, IPR) issues to global trade governance. Prior to the WTO era, matters of IPR at the global level were usually dealt with at various fora of the United Nations, especially the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIP0).

The implication in this transformation has not been lost on commentators. Vincent Chiappetta …

Should Corporations Have First Amendment Rights?, Kent Greenfield, Daniel Greenwood, Erik Jaffe Jan 2007

Should Corporations Have First Amendment Rights?, Kent Greenfield, Daniel Greenwood, Erik Jaffe

Seattle University Law Review

As Professor Winkler correctly stated, current doctrine emphasizes the rights of listeners rather than the identity of corporate speakers. My argument is, in effect, that this emphasis misses the key point. But I will not deal with listeners directly. I am simply going to assume, rather than argue, that if corporate advertising were ineffective in influencing voters or legislators, normal market processes would eliminate it. I'm going to take it for granted that when corporations speak, it makes a difference in the actual results.

Current Status And Long-Term Trends In Water Quality And Living Resources In The Virginia Tributaries And Chesapeake Bay Mainstem From 1985 Through 2005, Daniel M. Dauer, Harold G. Marshall, John R. Donat, Michael F. Lane, Suzanne C. Doughten, Frederick A. Hoffman Jan 2007

Current Status And Long-Term Trends In Water Quality And Living Resources In The Virginia Tributaries And Chesapeake Bay Mainstem From 1985 Through 2005, Daniel M. Dauer, Harold G. Marshall, John R. Donat, Michael F. Lane, Suzanne C. Doughten, Frederick A. Hoffman

Status and Trends for Virginia Chesapeake Bay

A marked decline in the water quality of the Chesapeake Bay has occurred over the past several decades. The disappearance of submerged aquatic vegetation in certain regions of the Bay, declines in the abundance of some commercially and recreationally important species, increases in the incidence of low dissolved oxygen events, changes in the Bay's food web, and other ecological problems have been related to the deteriorating water quality. The results of concentrated research efforts in the late 1970s and early 1980s stimulated the establishment of Federal and state directives to better manage the Chesapeake Bay watershed. By way of the …

Modeling Small Business Growth, Migration Behavior, Local Public Services And Household Income In Appalachia: A Spatial Simultaneous Equations Approach, Gebremeskel H. Gebremariam Jan 2007

Modeling Small Business Growth, Migration Behavior, Local Public Services And Household Income In Appalachia: A Spatial Simultaneous Equations Approach, Gebremeskel H. Gebremariam

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

In this paper, a spatial simultaneous growth equilibrium model of small business growth, migration behavior, median household income and local public expenditures is developed. The model is empirically estimated by Generalized Spatial Three-Stage Least Squares estimator using count-level data from Appalachia for 1990-2000. The results suggest the existence of interdependence among the growth rates of small business, gross in-and out-migration, median household income and local public services in the form of feedback simultaneities, spatial autoregressive lag and spatial cross-regressive lag simultaneities. The findings also suggest the existence of conditional convergence with respect to endogenous variables of the model. The speeds …

An Empirical Analysis Of Employment, Migration, Local Public Services And Regional Income Growth In Appalachia, Gebremeskel H. Gebremariam, Tesfa Gebremedhin, Peter V. Schaeffer, Randall Jackson, Tim Phipps

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

This study develops a five-equation simultaneous system in a partial lagadjustment growth-equilibrium framework. It improved previous models in the growthequilibrium tradition by explicitly modeling local government and regional income in the growth process. It also explicitly modeled gross in-migration and gross out-migration separately in order to spell out the differential effects. The results show the existence of feedback simultaneities among the endogenous variables of the model. This finding is important from economic policy perspective because it indicates that sector specific policies should be integrated and harmonized in order to achieve the desirable outcome. Under this circumstance, looking at the direct …

A Spatial Model Of Regional Variations In Business Growth In Appalachian States, Gebremeskel H. Gebremariam, Tesfa Gebremedhin, Peter V. Schaeffer, Tim Phipps, Randall Jackson

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

In this study, a spatial growth equilibrium model of business growth is developed and empirically estimated by Generalized Spatial Two-Stage Least Squares (GS2SLS) estimator using cross-sectional data from Appalachian States counties for 1990-2000. Beside the existence of spatial spillover effects, the results suggest that agglomerative effects that arise from both the demand and the supply sides were active in contributing to business growth in the study area during the study period. The policy implications of these findings are: (1) Regional cooperation of counties and communities is advisable and may even in fact be necessary to design appropriate policies that encourage …

Impacts Of Regional Growth On Farmland Development In The Northeast U.S., Yohannes G. Hailu, Cheryl Brown Jan 2007

Impacts Of Regional Growth On Farmland Development In The Northeast U.S., Yohannes G. Hailu, Cheryl Brown

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

This study models the relationship between regional growth and agricultural land development in the Northeast United States. A system of simultaneous equations is estimated using three-stage-least squares on county-level data. Results indicate that regional growth puts upward pressure on agricultural land values and downward pressure on the stock of agricultural land. Farm performance and some farmland protection policies were not effective in limiting farmland development.

Eleven Big Ideas About Conflict: A Superficial Guide For The Thoughtful Journalist, Leonard L. Riskin

UF Law Faculty Publications

When Professor Richard Reuben asked me to speak about the most basic ideas in conflict resolution to a group that included renowned journalists and journalism scholars, I balked. Surely these notions would seem too obvious, mundane, or superficial. But Richard - a practicing journalist for many years as well as an expert on conflict - assured me that the audience would find most of them surprising and useful. I hope he is correct.

I plan to present eleven ideas from the dispute resolution literature that I find particularly helpful in my work and life and which I think any journalist …

A Multiple-Strategy Approach To Solving The Energy Puzzle, Irma S. Russell

Faculty Journal Articles & Other Writings

This article describes the complex issues facing the energy needs and policies of the United States. The article notes that the role of the United States on the world stage and the health of the public and the environment depend on successfully solving the energy puzzle to harmonize economic development, sustainable use of the resources, and public safety. The article concludes that part of the difficulty of the debate may arise from an assumption that a single solution to the problem awaits and suggests that instead the only way forward is a policy of diversification and multiple strategies, encouraging conservation …

Subverting Justice: An Indictment Of The Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, Kim Mccoy Jan 2007

Subverting Justice: An Indictment Of The Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, Kim Mccoy

Animal Law Review

The Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA) creates yet another obstacle for the animal advocacy movement. This article explores the reasons behind the AETA’s enactment and its implications for those who advocate on behalf of animals. The author notes the AETA targets individuals based solely on their political ideology and can deter these individuals from exercising their right to free speech due to the threat of being permanently branded as a terrorist. It is this infringement on First Amendment rights, coupled with the AETA’s overbreadth and vagueness, that lead the author to conclude the AETA is unconstitutional. The author also notes …
