Using Surrogate Measures To Predict Patient Satisfaction In The Emergency Department, Erica Egri Jan 2007

Using Surrogate Measures To Predict Patient Satisfaction In The Emergency Department, Erica Egri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With healthcare organizations struggling to remain competitive and financially stable in a market where minimizing costs is a priority, hospital administrators feel the sense of urgency when it comes to keeping patients satisfied with services in order to expand volume and market share. The Emergency Department is considered the front door of a healthcare organization, and keeping its visitors satisfied in order to guarantee a future visit or a referral to a friend or family member is a must. While patient input on the services received in a healthcare facility is essential to improving quality of care, the costs associated …

Pilot Study Of Nutrient Loading In A Wet Detention Lake, Eric C. Gurr Jan 2007

Pilot Study Of Nutrient Loading In A Wet Detention Lake, Eric C. Gurr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Florida is surrounded by water, and its many internal lakes and rivers have long been recognized for their excellent fishing and boating. This notoriety draws land developers to the lake shores to establish residential and commercial infrastructure. This land development brings with it flood plain alteration, water level stabilization, and increased nutrients which cause adverse impacts to our lakes. In response, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) passed the Federal Clean Water Act (CWA) in 1972 which set the framework for the water quality standards for the entire United States. As a result of the CWA many point sources …

Congestion Avoidance And Fairness In Wireless Sensor Networks, Mohammad Ahmad Jan 2007

Congestion Avoidance And Fairness In Wireless Sensor Networks, Mohammad Ahmad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sensor network congestion avoidance and control primarily aims to reduce packet drops while maintaining fair bandwidth allocation to existing network flows. The design of a congestion control algorithm suited for all types of applications in sensor networks is a challenging task due to the application-specific nature of these networks. With numerous sensors transmitting data simultaneously to one or more base stations (also called sinks), sensor nodes located near the base station will most likely experience congestion and packet loss. In this thesis, we propose a novel distributed congestion avoidance algorithm which calculates the ratio of the number of downstream and …

An Investigation Of Size Exclusion And Diffusion Controlled Membrane Fouling, Colin Michael Hobbs Jan 2007

An Investigation Of Size Exclusion And Diffusion Controlled Membrane Fouling, Colin Michael Hobbs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The reduction of membrane productivity (i.e. membrane fouling) during operation occurs in virtually all membrane applications. Membrane fouling originates from the method by which membranes operate: contaminants are rejected by the membrane and retained on the feed side of the membrane while treated water passes through the membrane. The accumulation of these contaminants on the feed side of the membrane results in increased operating pressures, increased backwashing frequencies, increased chemical cleaning frequencies, and increased membrane replacement frequencies. The most significant practical implication of membrane fouling is increased operating and maintenance costs. As such, membrane fouling must be properly managed to …

Comparison Of Thm Formation During Disinfection: Ferrate Versus Free Chlorine For Different Source Waters, Adhem Mukattash Jan 2007

Comparison Of Thm Formation During Disinfection: Ferrate Versus Free Chlorine For Different Source Waters, Adhem Mukattash

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of the study was to compare the trihalomethanes (THMs) produced from ferrate with hypochlorite and to determine how different the THM production would be for a given degree of disinfection (3 log reduction in Heterotrophic Plate Count (HPC)). Different water samples were collected from Lake Claire, Atlantic Ocean, and secondary effluent from an advanced wastewater treatment plant. THM formation was determined using a standard assay over 7 days at room temperature. In addition samples were tested for Total Coliform Escherichia coli (TC/E.coli), and heterotrophic bacteria using HPC by spreadplating on R2A agar. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was measured …

Energy Dispersive Spectrum (EDS) was used to determine the elemental composition of the powder. Thermal properties …

Optimizing The Design Of Multimodal User Interfaces, Leah Reeves Jan 2007

Optimizing The Design Of Multimodal User Interfaces, Leah Reeves

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Due to a current lack of principle-driven multimodal user interface design guidelines, designers may encounter difficulties when choosing the most appropriate display modality for given users or specific tasks (e.g., verbal versus spatial tasks). The development of multimodal display guidelines from both a user and task domain perspective is thus critical to the achievement of successful human-system interaction. Specifically, there is a need to determine how to design task information presentation (e.g., via which modalities) to capitalize on an individual operator's information processing capabilities and the inherent efficiencies associated with redundant sensory information, thereby alleviating information overload. The present effort …

Outcome And Process Measure Feedback As They Effect Therapy Outcomes, Brett T. Copeland Jan 2007

Outcome And Process Measure Feedback As They Effect Therapy Outcomes, Brett T. Copeland

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

In the study of treatment outcomes, a subset of effectiveness research, the client-focused approach is ideal, as it examines individual responses to therapy over time. The Life Status Questionnaire (LSQ) is designed to track therapy outcomes over time. Despite the emphasis on client outcomes, the process between a therapist and client may have the greatest impact on therapy outcomes and should be an inherent part of a client-focused approach. This study investigated the effects of simultaneous use of an outcome (LSQ) and two Empathy Scale-Revised process subscales, Positive (ES-P) and Negative (ES-N), to determine how these separately and collectively affect …

Using Electrochemical Monitoring To Predict Metal Release In Drinking Water Distribution Systems, Rajendra D. Vaidya Jan 2007

Using Electrochemical Monitoring To Predict Metal Release In Drinking Water Distribution Systems, Rajendra D. Vaidya

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Corrosion of distribution system piping and home plumbing materials is a major concern in the water community. Iron release adverse affects aesthetic water quality and the release of copper and lead is regulated by the Lead and Copper rule (LCR) and can adversely affect consumer health. Corrosion control is typically done by pH regulation and/or addition of corrosion inhibitors. Monitoring of corrosion control is typically done after the fact by monitoring metal release, functional group concentration of the selected chemical species or water quality. Hence, the associated laboratory analyses create a significant delay prior to the assessment of corrosion in …

Cost-Benefit Analysis Without Analyzing Costs Or Benefits: Reasonable Accommodation, Balancing, And Stigmatic Harms, Cass R. Sunstein Jan 2007

Cost-Benefit Analysis Without Analyzing Costs Or Benefits: Reasonable Accommodation, Balancing, And Stigmatic Harms, Cass R. Sunstein

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Is an accommodation “reasonable,” under the Americans with Disabilities Act, if and only if the benefits are roughly proportional to the costs? How should benefits and costs be assessed? Should courts asks about how much disabled employees are willing to pay to obtain the accommodation, or instead how much they would have to be paid not to have the accommodation? How should stigmatic or expressive harms be valued? This essay, written for a symposium on the work of Judge Richard A. Posner, engages these questions in a discussion of an important opinion in which Judge Posner denied accommodations involving the …

Price Discrimination In The Textbook Market: An Analysis Of The Post-Quality King Proposals To Prevent And Disincentivize Reimportation And Arbitrage, Christine Ongchin Jan 2007

Price Discrimination In The Textbook Market: An Analysis Of The Post-Quality King Proposals To Prevent And Disincentivize Reimportation And Arbitrage, Christine Ongchin

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The note examines how the rise of the internet and legal developments, particularly the Supreme Court's decision in Quality King Distributors v. Lanza, have disrupted traditional price discrimination practices in the textbook industry. Historically, publishers engaged in third-degree price discrimination, charging higher prices in the U.S. market due to geographic isolation and limited arbitrage opportunities. However, the internet has facilitated reimportation and arbitrage, undermining this practice. The first sale doctrine under 17 U.S.C. § 109(a) further complicates efforts to prevent resale of cheaper, internationally purchased textbooks in the U.S. market. Publishers must now consider alternative strategies, such as contractual …

Note On The Ndvi-Lst Relationship And The Use Of Temperature-Related Drought Indices Over North America, D. Sun, Menas Kafatos Jan 2007

Note On The Ndvi-Lst Relationship And The Use Of Temperature-Related Drought Indices Over North America, D. Sun, Menas Kafatos

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

A comprehensive evaluation of the relationship between vegetation and Land Surface Temperature (LST) over the North America is presented. It is found that the correlations between LST and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) depend on the season-of-year and time-of-day. For winter, the correlation between NDVI and LST is positive. The strong negative correlations between LST and NDVI are only found during the warm seasons. Thus temperature-related drought indices may only be used in the warm seasons from May to October, and should be used with caution during cold seasons in North America. The cooling effect of vegetation on LST is …

The Endogenous Cannabinoid Anandamide Inhibits Cromakalim-Activated K+ Currents In Follicle-Enclosed Xenopus Oocytes, Murat Oz, Keun-Hang Susan Yang, Meral Dinc, Toni S. Shippenberg Jan 2007

The Endogenous Cannabinoid Anandamide Inhibits Cromakalim-Activated K+ Currents In Follicle-Enclosed Xenopus Oocytes, Murat Oz, Keun-Hang Susan Yang, Meral Dinc, Toni S. Shippenberg

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The effect of the endogenous cannabinoid anandamide on K+ currents activated by the ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channel opener cromakalim was investigated in follicle-enclosed Xenopus oocytes using the two-electrode voltage-clamp technique. Anandamide (1–90 μM) reversibly inhibited cromakalim-induced K+ currents, with an IC50 value of 8.1 ± 2 μM. Inhibition was noncompetitive and independent of membrane potential. Coapplication of anandamide with the cannabinoid type 1 (CB1) receptor antagonist N-(piperidin-1-yl)-5-(4-chlorophenyl)-1-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-4-methyl-1H-pyrazole-3-carboximide hydrochloride (SR 141716A) (1 μM), the CB2 receptor antagonist N-[(1S)endo-1,3,3-trimethyl bicyclo heptan-2-yl]-5-(4-chloro-3-methylphenyl)-1-(4-methylbenzyl)-pyrazole-3-carboxamide (SR144528) (1 μM), or pertussis toxin (5 μg/ml) did not alter the inhibitory effect of anandamide, suggesting that known cannabinoid receptors …

Maccrate (In)Action: The Case For Enhancing The Upper-Level Writing Requirement In Law Schools, Kenneth D. Chestek Jan 2007

Maccrate (In)Action: The Case For Enhancing The Upper-Level Writing Requirement In Law Schools, Kenneth D. Chestek

University of Colorado Law Review

Many commentators have described, and lamented, the gap between the legal academy and the practice of law. This article takes a more hopeful approach. The American Bar Association, the accrediting body for law schools, appears to have been nudging law schools toward offering, and even requiring, more and more practical legal education to teach law students how to perform the tasks they will need in order to practice in a competent manner. The article examines the 2001 amendment to the ABA Standards for Accreditation, which required, for the first time, an "additional rigorous writing experience after the first year, " …

Solving The "Initiatory Construction" Puzzle (And Improving Direct Democracy) By Appropriate Refocusing On Sponsor Intent, Glenn C. Smith Jan 2007

Solving The "Initiatory Construction" Puzzle (And Improving Direct Democracy) By Appropriate Refocusing On Sponsor Intent, Glenn C. Smith

University of Colorado Law Review

The U.S. Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security has consistently attempted to make the process of becoming a lawful permanent resident of the United States difficult, at best. A 1997 Department of Justice regulation made this process impossible for a certain class of immigrants known as parolees, despite the fact that the Immigration and Nationality Act explicitly allowed these parolees the opportunity to become lawful permanent residents. The Department later withdrew this regulation because of the controversy it created in the federal circuit courts of appeal. However, new proposed regulations threaten to harm the position of immigrants in …

After Gonzales V. Raich: Is The Endangered Species Act Constitutional Under The Commerce Clause, Bradford C. Mank Jan 2007

After Gonzales V. Raich: Is The Endangered Species Act Constitutional Under The Commerce Clause, Bradford C. Mank

University of Colorado Law Review

In both its 1995 decision United States v. Lopez and in its 2000 decision United States v. Morrison, the Supreme Court had adopted a narrow economic interpretation of congressional authority to regulate intrastate activities under the Commerce Clause. In four separate cases, three circuit courts (the District of Columbia, Fourth, and Fifth Circuits) struggled with deciding whether Congress may still protect endangered and threatened species that have little commercial value under the Commerce Clause after Lopez and Morrison. In each case, the court concluded that Congress did have the authority to protect endangered species under the Commerce Clause, including small …

Secrecy And Access In An Innovation Intensive Economy: Reordering Information Privileges In Environmental, Health, And Safety Law, Mary L. Lyndon Jan 2007

Secrecy And Access In An Innovation Intensive Economy: Reordering Information Privileges In Environmental, Health, And Safety Law, Mary L. Lyndon

University of Colorado Law Review

This article examines the law concerned with access to information that is commercially valuable when it is kept secret but is also essential to environmental, health, and safety (EHS) risk evaluation. EHS law stimulates sustainable economic activity, including new technologies, and thus complements intellectual property law. Access to EHS information is essential to risk management, but current disclosure obligations are unclear, as the law is a patchwork of familiar but ill-fitting concepts and entitlements. The article discusses the current law that affects disclosure, taking into account recent changes in the technological and economic landscape. It also describes the contrasting uses …
