Anesthesia For An Adult Patient With Congenital Diaphragmatic Eventration, Hale Yarkan Uysal, Solmaz Günal, Ahmet Ş. Uyar, Hülya Başar

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Congenital diaphragmatic eventration is an uncommon condition in adults and is defined as an abnormal elevation of the diaphragm. In adults, diaphragmatic eventration causes respiratory impairment that is associated with severe dyspnea, orthopnea and hypoxia. Most of the symptomatic patients may survive with supportive therapy without any need for surgical correction, though they are at risk of spontaneous diaphragm rupture. Spontaneous diaphragmatic rupture may develop in a patient with diaphragmatic eventration as a result of any event that leads to increase in intraabdominal pressure. In this case report, we present the anesthetic management of an adult patient with congenital diaphragmatic …

A Real-Time Transthoracic Echocardiographic Imaging Of Pulmonary Embolism In A Patient With Suspected Primary Antiphospholipid Syndrome, Hasan Kocatürk, M. Cengi̇z Çolak, Mustafa Yilmaz, Ednan Bayram, Sebahatti̇n Ateşal

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Clinical manifestations of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) include repeated episodes of arterial and/or venous thrombosis, recurrent fetal wastage, and premature births. Correct diagnosis of APS requires identification of lupus anticoagulant (LA) and anticardiolipin antibodies (aCL). Other antibodies such as anti-b2 glycoprotein-I have also been detected. A 32-year-old man presented with acute left-sided hemiplegia and was admitted with a possible diagnosis of primary APS. A pulmonary embolus-in-transit was captured incidentally by transthoracic echocardiographic study.

An Impulse Control Disorder Case With Penile Fracture And Trichotillomania, Bi̇rgül Elbozan Cumurcu, Burhanetti̇n Kaya, Feryal Çam Çeli̇kel, Ahmet Soylu, Fi̇kret Erdemi̇r

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Penile fractures are classically described as presenting with rapid detumescence of an erection associated with blunt trauma. This clinical finding is due to a tear in the tunica albuginea surrounding the corpora cavernosum. In this study, we report and discuss a case of trichotillomania and penile bending impulse resulting in penile fracture, which was operated in the urology clinic. The possible psychological and psychiatric problems underlying the impulsive behavior are discussed, and the value of a psychiatric evaluation is emphasized.

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This reflection on a series of photographs from the exhibition URGENT gathered by members from "A day in the life photography and story collective" begins to examine the way social structures are implicated in the lives of those who are living in poverty and how their lives can be rendered visible. Through our work in communities with people who are experiencing homelessness and insecure housing we consider the role of photography in picturing and subjecting communities to a gaze that has the potential to be empathic and engaged or uncaring and disengaged.

On Being Acceptable: State Sanction, Race Privilege And Lesbian And Gay Parents, Damien W. Riggs Jan 2007

On Being Acceptable: State Sanction, Race Privilege And Lesbian And Gay Parents, Damien W. Riggs

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

'Positive' representations of lesbian and gay parents within the media continue to draw parallels between the experiences of heterosexual parents and those of lesbian and gay parents. Such comparisons are typically aimed at 'proving' that lesbian and gay parents are acceptable parents. There is, however, most often a failure to examine how race mediates representations of the category 'parent', the result being that references to 'parents' typically refer to white parents. The category parent is thus built upon a series of exclusions, ones with which white lesbian and gay parents may unwittingly be complicit. Through an examination of both a …

Unruly Corporeality: Aids, Immigration And The Imagined Australian Body, Zoë Anderson

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Particular bodies within the Australian nation can be seen to threaten to disrupt and destabilize dominant notions of cultural citizenship. Understood through intricate intersections of ethnicity, gender and sexuality, 'Australianness' - and its correlation to the geographical nation - is constantly monitored. Crucial here is the manner in which boundaries of whiteness, and 'true Australianess', are reconstituted, fuelling avoidance of the ambiguities of national belonging and ensuring the enduring pathologisation of the 'un'Australian. In particular, discursive associations between HIV/AIDS and the 'foreign' as perceived contaminates to the nation operate to reinforce these understandings. Here, the threat of disease both informs, …

A Mixed Integer Programming Model To Locate Traumatic Brain Injury Treatment Units In The Department Of Veterans Affairs: A Case Study, Murray J. Côté, Siddhartha Syam, W. Brice Vogel, Diane C. Cowper

Management Faculty Research and Publications

For the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a significant problem facing active duty military personnel, veterans, their families, and caregivers. The VA has designated TBI treatment as one of its physical medicine and rehabilitation special emphasis programs, thereby providing a comprehensive array of treatment services to those military personnel and veterans with TBI. Timely treatment of TBI is critical in achieving maximal recovery, and being in geographical proximity to a medical center with specialized TBI treatment services is a major determinant of whether such treatment is utilized. We present a mixed integer programming model for …

Investment Advice: Go For The Mba, Brooks Holtom, Edward J. Inderrieden Jan 2007

Investment Advice: Go For The Mba, Brooks Holtom, Edward J. Inderrieden

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Business school deans have been rushing to the defense of their graduate degree programs ever since Jeffrey Pfeffer and Christina Fong published their 2002 article questioning the value of an MBA. Not only did those authors debate the worth of the MBA in general, they suggested that the degree was only valuable if it was earned from a top-ranked school. A recent U.S.-based study shows this is clearly not the case. Researchers employed by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) surveyed thousands of graduates over the course of five years, collecting data that compared the costs and rewards of accredited …

Judicial Review And The Limits Of Arbitral Authority: Lessons From The Law Of Contract, Paul F. Kirgis Jan 2007

Judicial Review And The Limits Of Arbitral Authority: Lessons From The Law Of Contract, Paul F. Kirgis

Faculty Law Review Articles

The Supreme Court simply stopped talking about the limits of arbitration as a mechanism for the adjudication of legal rights. Once the Court decided that any and all claims could be arbitrated, it funneled everything into the framework of the FAA, with its contractarian approach to arbitration. While it never expressly declared that arbitration of discrimination claims or consumer fraud claims fit within a contractarian model, as a practical matter, those claims were governed by the same rules that governed traditionally contractarian matters such as labor and commercial disputes. Most notably from my perspective, they all received the same extremely …

The Role Of Bdnf Within The Medial Prefrontal Cortex On Relapse To Cocaine-Seeking Behavior, William J. Berglind Jan 2007

The Role Of Bdnf Within The Medial Prefrontal Cortex On Relapse To Cocaine-Seeking Behavior, William J. Berglind

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Glutamatergic pyramidal cells arising from the prefrontal cortex (PFC) are critical mediators of reinstatement to cocaine-seeking. A potent modulator of PFC activity is brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule that has been implicated in the regulation of glutamatergic neurotransmission. In this study, the role of BDNF in the PFC was investigated in an animal model of cocaine addiction. First, a cocaine-induced decrease in BDNF mRNA within the PFC was documented following 22 h of abstinence, followed by an increase in BDNF protein expression within the PFC following 21 d of extinction training. Second, an intra-PFC infusion of BDNF attenuated …
