ICT - Digital Literacy

Australia's national goals for schooling assert that when students leave school they should be: confident, creative and productive users of new technologies, particularly information and communication technologies, and understand the impact of those technologies on society. The Australian National Assessment Program includes the systematic assessment of the extent to which this goal is being achieved through triennial sample surveys of students in Years 6 and 10. This report is based on the assessment of ICT literacy conducted in October 2005. It describes the development of a computer-based tool for assessing ICT literacy among school students and the application of that …

A Psychoeducational Group Designed For The Social Supporters Of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Parents, Tara Jordan

Master's Theses and Capstones

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) claims 5,000 to 7,000 infant lives each year. The deaths undoubtedly cause a sense of guilt, depression and hopelessness among survivors; specifically the parents. Many people supporting SIDS parents tend to feel uncomfortable around them and thus avoid the grieving family altogether. Many SIDS parents state that while their friends and family are trying to be helpful and supportive, many of their attempts actually are hurtful. A psychoeducational group was developed for the social supporters of SIDS parents, allowing its members to become better equipped to help support the grieving parents and to give them …

Trading With Bandits, Peter T. Leeson Jan 2007

Trading With Bandits, Peter T. Leeson

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Abstract Is it possible to trade with bandits? When government is absent, the superior strength of some agents makes it cheaper for them to violently steal what they desire from weaker agents than to use trade to obtain what they want. Such was the case with middlemen who interacted with producers in late precolonial west central Africa. In the face of this threat, producers employed two mechanisms to make exchange with middlemen possible. On the one hand, they used credit to alter middlemen’s cost‐benefit structure of engaging in plunder versus trade. On the other hand, producers demanded tribute from traveling …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Aim: Delta32 polymorphism in the chemokine receptor 5 (CCR5) gene affects human immune deficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) entry, transmission, and outcome. The aim of this study was to determine the allelic frequencies of genetic variant CCR5delta32, which influence susceptibility to HIV-1 infection, in a northern Turkish population. Materials and Methods: We determined the allelic frequencies of CCR5delta32 in 449 unrelated healthy individuals from the central Black Sea coastal region without any known history of HIV-1 infection. The polymorphism was analyzed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The population was in the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Delta32 allelic frequencies were calculated. Results: The …

The Role Of Periodontal Disease On Acute Phase Proteins In Patients With Coronary Heart Disease And Diabetes, Gonca Çayir Keleş, Burcu Özkan Çeti̇nkaya, Selen Burçak Şi̇mşek, Di̇yar Köprülü, Hakki Kahraman

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Aims: Chronic infections such as periodontal disease (PD) have been suggested to be a risk factor for coronary heart disease (CHD). Elevated levels of acute phase proteins are associated with increased risk for cardiovascular events in both healthy individuals and patients with known CHD. This study aimed to investigate the role of PD on C-reactive protein (CRP) and fibrinogen levels in patients with either CHD or type 2 diabetes. Materials and Methods: 80 subjects were evaluated in four groups: individuals with CHD+PD (group 1; n: 20), individuals with type 2 diabetes+PD (group 2; n: 20), individuals with PD without any …

Pregnancy Associated Plasma Protein-A And Epilepsy, Abdurrahman Coşkun, Burcu Özdemi̇rli̇, Ramazan Memi̇şoğullari Jan 2007

Pregnancy Associated Plasma Protein-A And Epilepsy, Abdurrahman Coşkun, Burcu Özdemi̇rli̇, Ramazan Memi̇şoğullari

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

In this study, we aimed to investigate the role of pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A) as insulin-like growth factor binding protein-4 (IGFBP-4) protease in epilepsy patients. We studied 16 epilepsy patients and 10 healthy controls. Serum PAPP-A levels of epilepsy patients (6.8 ± 3.2 mU/L) were higher than of the control group (5.1 ± 1.9 mU/L), but the difference was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). We concluded that PAPP-A may increase the bioavailability of insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) due to decreased neurogenesis and synthesis of IGFs in chronically epilepsy patients.

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background and Aim: Prenatal diagnosis of chromosome abnormalities is usually performed on amniotic fluid samples. Aneuploidy screening by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), although not an alternative for conventional cytogenetics, has become a useful tool. Materials and Methods: We compared the results of FISH and conventional cytogenetic analysis applied on 51 amniotic fluid samples between January 2002 and December 2005, in our Cytogenetics Laboratory. Amniocytes were extracted using 5 cc of the sample, and direct FISH was applied using an AneuVysion Assay Kit (Vysis). The remaining fluid samples were used for chromosome analysis by conventional methods after long-term cell cultures. …
