Stormwater Influence On Phytoplankton Composition And Dynamics In Lake Joyce, Virginia, Lewis F. Affronti Jr., B. Thomas Duquette Jan 2007

Stormwater Influence On Phytoplankton Composition And Dynamics In Lake Joyce, Virginia, Lewis F. Affronti Jr., B. Thomas Duquette

Virginia Journal of Science

A three year study of Lake Joyce, Virginia revealed relationships between the timing, duration, and amount of stormwater runoff and phytoplankton abundance and composition. Major phytoplankton taxa were identified and cyanophytes dominanted during periods of decreased rainwater input and increased lake water retention times. Increased freshwater input was associated with the growth of a diverse assemblage of both chlorophytes and diatoms. Phytoplankton dynamics as a result of significant rain events (i.e., hurricanes Floyd and Irene, 1999) were documented and specific taxa involved in nuisance algal blooms were identified.

Dead Roses And Blooming Deserts: The Medical History Of A New Deal Icon, Michelle F. Turk Jan 2007

Dead Roses And Blooming Deserts: The Medical History Of A New Deal Icon, Michelle F. Turk

Psi Sigma Siren

Although a memorial plaque at the Hoover Dam sets the number of workers killed during its construction at ninety-six, the real figure was nearly double. In fact, the figure would have been much higher had it not been for the precedent-setting effort by the federal government, contactors, and workers to save as many lives as possible on the project. Aside from its long unrecognized value as a jobs program, much needed stimulus to the fledging Las Vegas economy, and status as one of the “man-made wonders of the world,” Hoover Dam represented a major step forward for the American occupational …

Racial Inequality In The Distribution Of Hazardous Waste: A National-Level Reassessment, Paul Mohai, Robin Saha Jan 2007

Racial Inequality In The Distribution Of Hazardous Waste: A National-Level Reassessment, Paul Mohai, Robin Saha

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

National-level studies examining racial disparities around hazardous waste treatment, storage, and disposal facilities have been very influential in defining the academic and political debates about the existence and importance of "environmental injustice." However, these studies tend to employ methods that fail to adequately control for proximity between environmentally hazardous sites and nearby residential populations. By using GIS and applying methods increasingly used in environmental inequality research that better control for proximity, we conduct a comprehensive reassessment of racial inequality in the distribution of the nation 's hazardous waste facilities. We compare the magnitude of racial disparities found with those of …

Rhetorical Criticism Of Absence And Silence Of University Presidents At The Grokster Court, Lawrence Eyo Ita Jan 2007

Rhetorical Criticism Of Absence And Silence Of University Presidents At The Grokster Court, Lawrence Eyo Ita

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In the peer-to-peer file sharing case of MGM v. Grokster, university presidents and university associations did not submit any amicus curiae briefs; The purpose of this study was to conduct a rhetorical criticism of this absence and silence as symbolic action. Using legal research and situational criticism, the study explores the reaction of university presidents during the earlier phases of the file sharing phenomenon as well as their absence and silence at the Supreme Court in light of the questions that litigants urged the Court to decide; It was found that escalating peer to peer file sharing degraded university network …

The Effects Of Thematic Importance On Story Recall Among Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder And Comparison Children, Rebecca A. Flake, Elizabeth P. Lorch, Richard Milich

Psychology Faculty Publications

This study examined the recall of televised stories for younger (4-6 years) and older (7-9 years) children with and without attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) under two different viewing conditions (toys present/toys absent). Each child watched two Rugrats television programs, once with toys present and once with toys absent. Immediately after viewing a program, the child completed a free recall of the observed story. Comparison children’s recall increased more than ADHD children’s as importance level increased, and comparison children recalled more information overall than children with ADHD. When toys were present, children with ADHD retold less coherent stories than comparison …

Patently Wrong: The U.S. Supreme Court Punts In The Case Of Labcorp V. Metabolite, John G. New Jan 2007

Patently Wrong: The U.S. Supreme Court Punts In The Case Of Labcorp V. Metabolite, John G. New

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

In June 2006, after having granted certiorari and hearing oral arguments, the United States Supreme Court dismissed the case of Laboratory Corp. of America Holdings v. Metabolite Laboratories, Inc. as having been improvidently granted a writ of certiorari. Dissenting from this extraordinary step was Justice Breyer, joined by Justices Stevens and Souter. At issue in the case was a patent, the owners of which claimed that a physician's use of any test to infer vitamin deficiency by raised blood serum levels of the chemical homocysteine infringed the patent. This Article argues that the Supreme Court was itself improvident in dismissing …

Identification And Characterization Of Ogg1 Mutations In Patients With Alzheimer's Disease, Guogen Mao, Xiaoyu Pan, Beibei Zhu, Yanbin Zhang, Fenghua Yuan, Jian Huang, Mark A. Lovell, Maxwell P. Lee, William R. Markesbery, Guo-Min Li, Liya Gu

Toxicology and Cancer Biology Faculty Publications

Patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) exhibit higher levels of 8-oxo-guanine (8-oxoG) DNA lesions in their brain, suggesting a reduced or defective 8-oxoG repair. To test this hypothesis, this study investigated 14 AD patients and 10 age-matched controls for mutations of the major 8-oxoG removal gene OGG1. Whereas no alterations were detected in any control samples, four AD patients exhibited mutations in OGG1, two carried a common single base (C796) deletion that alters the carboxyl terminal sequence of OGG1, and the other two had nucleotide alterations leading to single amino acid substitutions. In vitro biochemical assays revealed …

An Investigation Of Women’S Career Progression Decisions As A Significant Determinant Of The Under-Representation Of Women At Senior Management Levels In Ireland, Christine Cross Jan 2007

An Investigation Of Women’S Career Progression Decisions As A Significant Determinant Of The Under-Representation Of Women At Senior Management Levels In Ireland, Christine Cross

Theses

Recent decades have witnessed unprecedented changes both in the world economy and in the composition of workforces internationally, resulting in a significant rise in female economic activity rates. Women’s increased involvement in the labour force is, however, not paralleled within the management levels of organisations. The persistent nature of the dearth of women in executive roles provides the context for this study. The unique focus of this thesis is women in middle-level management positions, as managers at this level are viewed as successors to senior organisational roles. Thirty female managers were interviewed, from organisations representing a wide range of industry …

Parties' Defenses To Binding Arbitration Agreements In The Health Care Field & The Operation Of The Mccarran-Ferguson Act Comment., Elizabeth K. Stanley Jan 2007

Parties' Defenses To Binding Arbitration Agreements In The Health Care Field & The Operation Of The Mccarran-Ferguson Act Comment., Elizabeth K. Stanley

St. Mary's Law Journal

Arbitration is a process which allows parties voluntarily to refer their disputes to an impartial third person, an arbiter, selected by them to determine the parties’ rights and liabilities. Initially, arbitration was encouraged between corporate entities with equal bargaining power. But, due to federal policy favoring arbitration, the use of predispute arbitration agreements have increased dramatically, and such clauses can now be found in many noncommercial consumer contracts, especially those in the health care industry. The strong federal policy favoring arbitration originated with Congress’ passing of the Federal Arbitration Act (FAA). Under the FAA, an arbitration agreement is enforceable if …

Microsoft Windows Vista: The Beginning Or The End Of End-User License Agreements As We Know Them Recent Development., Rebecca K. Lively Jan 2007

Microsoft Windows Vista: The Beginning Or The End Of End-User License Agreements As We Know Them Recent Development., Rebecca K. Lively

St. Mary's Law Journal

Microsoft Windows Vista’s widespread use and influence on the market represents an ideal case study on the enforceability, pitfalls, and future of the End-User License Agreement (EULA). Since the release of the Windows Vista operating system in early 2007, Microsoft consumers often do not realize they are entering into a contract with Microsoft when they install Windows Vista onto their computer. Microsoft consumers probably do not realize that they may be clicking away valuable rights. In analyzing the enforceability of the specific terms of the Windows Vista EULA, Washington law will be the primary source because the Windows Vista EULA …

Psychological Effects Of Not Having Equal Rights And Privileges In The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Community: Activism As An Antidote?, David E. Baker Jan 2007

Psychological Effects Of Not Having Equal Rights And Privileges In The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Community: Activism As An Antidote?, David E. Baker

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Despite the prevalence of discrimination in American society, little is known about the effects of equal rights activism on mental health. Within the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender community, discrimination against marriage, adoption, employment, and other rights and privileges given to heterosexual individuals is still legal and socially accepted in most American communities. Previous research has suggested that these individuals have higher incidences of depression, anxiety, and substance use than the general population. The experience of discrimination and punishment responses learned from societal messages is believed to contribute to these clinical issues within this community. This qualitative study found that equal …

Impact Of Training On School Psychologists' Knowledge And Attitudes Regarding Children With Chronic Health Issues, Abby Baker Jan 2007

Impact Of Training On School Psychologists' Knowledge And Attitudes Regarding Children With Chronic Health Issues, Abby Baker

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Children who have chronic medical illnesses must rely on their families and schools to create an environment that allows goals in the areas of development, of academic, social, familial and life-skills to be individualized to accommodate the capabilities of each child. School psychologists are an essential part of blending a child’s needs and academic fit. Although school psychologists receive some training in child psychopathology, they lack the necessary training in the areas of acute and chronic illness, in order to work with the health care system and to collaborate with pediatricians. The emergence of the field of Pediatric Psychology in …

Clinical Treatment Provider Attitudes Toward Sexual Offender Management Within An Outpatient Treatment Center : Treatment Provider Attitude Survey, Dustan A. Barabas Jan 2007

Clinical Treatment Provider Attitudes Toward Sexual Offender Management Within An Outpatient Treatment Center : Treatment Provider Attitude Survey, Dustan A. Barabas

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

The present study's foundation is based on research suggesting that the attitudes of clinicians regarding their clients have profound effects on therapeutic alliances, empathy, and staff burnouts, which may contribute to treatment barriers. Because professionally appropriate behavior often conceals stigma, misconceptions, and negative feelings that clinicians may have toward sexual offenders, an anonymous survey of attitudes, job burnout, and empathy was conducted in an outpatient setting. The survey instruments tap into some latent factors concerning the attitudes of clinicians, their perceptions of burnout, and their abilities to empathize with their clients. This research focused on describing a population of clinicians …

Exploration Into The Beliefs About Paternal Roles : The Development Of The Beliefs About Paternal Roles Inventory, Anthony M. Bocchicchio Jan 2007

Exploration Into The Beliefs About Paternal Roles : The Development Of The Beliefs About Paternal Roles Inventory, Anthony M. Bocchicchio

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

The aim of this study was to design and validate a self-report inventory of beliefs about paternal roles as expressed by mothers and fathers. A random sample of parents (N = 103) was administered the Beliefs about Paternal Roles – Initial Version to assess its psychometric properties. Results showed positive psychometric properties for 4 (Affection & Emotion, Engagement, Family, and Physical Well-Being) of the 12 proposed domains of paternal roles. Acceptable levels of internal consistency reliability were demonstrated for these four domains by the coefficient alpha of .84. A factor analysis of these four domains yielded a factor that says …

Analysis Of The Goodwin Sentence Completion Test In The Screening Of Clinical Depression, Karyn L. Goodwin-Tribble Jan 2007

Analysis Of The Goodwin Sentence Completion Test In The Screening Of Clinical Depression, Karyn L. Goodwin-Tribble

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

The Goodwin Sentence Completion Test (GSCT) was developed as a screening instrument for clinical depression. This instrument, composed of 25 sentence stems, was designed to indicate the level depression and to assess the strength of negative perceptions associated with dimensions of the cognitive triad (self, world, and future). Although the GSCT follows the typical format of most projective sentence completion tests, an objective scoring method was also constructed in order to evaluate more reliably individual results. The tool was administered to 80 adult volunteers ranging in age from 18 to 72 years of age. Volunteers were randomly selected from a …

Substance Abuse Severity, Treatment Motivation, And Criminal Thinking Factors : Predictors Of Treatment Retention With Substance Abusing Parolees In A Correctional Aftercare Program, Loretta Joan Henkel Jan 2007

Substance Abuse Severity, Treatment Motivation, And Criminal Thinking Factors : Predictors Of Treatment Retention With Substance Abusing Parolees In A Correctional Aftercare Program, Loretta Joan Henkel

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Substance abuse and substance dependence are complex disorders that affect millions of people in the United States. Two notable consequences of these disorders are increased criminality and higher rates of recidivism. This archival data study of 94 parolees admitted to the Day Reporting Center, Volunteers of America Delaware Valley in Camden, New Jersey examined the influence of substance abuse severity, of treatment motivation, and of criminal thinking factors on treatment retention in a correctional aftercare treatment program for parolees with a history of substance abuse or dependence. The extent to which parolees were deceptive in reporting information was also examined.
