Distribution And Habitats Of Mosquito Larvae In The Kingdom Of Tonga, Jon S. Harding, Culum Brown, Felicity Jones, Russell Taylor

Ecology Collection

Mosquitoes are a significant pest and human health issue in the Kingdom of Tonga. The occurrence of species and habitats used by mosquito larvae were investigated to determine the potential for control through larval habitat management. Forty-two sites, including 22 villages and 20 farm plantations on the six islands of Tongatapu, Pangaimotu, Vava’u, Pangaimotu (Vava’u group), ‘Utungake and Nuku, were surveyed in April 2006. A total of eight mosquito species were collected: Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus), Ae. horrescens (Edwards), Ae. nocturnus (Theobold), Ae. tongae (Edwards), Culex albinervis (Edwards), Cx. annulirostris (Skuse), Cx. quinquefasciatus (Say) and Cx. sitiens (Wiedemann). Several species were …

Considerations For Determining Optimal Mouse Caging Density, Charmaine Foltz, Larry Carbone, David Delong, Bernard E. Rollin, Pascalle Van Loo, Julia Whitaker, Axel Wolff

Laboratory Research and Animal Welfare Collection

At the 2006 National Meeting of the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science, a panel discussed the question of what constitutes optimal or acceptable housing density for mice. Though there is a consensus that present guidelines are somewhat arbitrarily defined, scientific research has not yet been able to provide clear recommendations for amending them. Speakers explored the many factors that influence decisions on mouse housing, including regulatory requirements, scientific data and their interpretation, financial considerations and ethical concerns. The panel largely agreed that animal well-being should be the measure of interest in evaluating housing density and that well-being includes not …

Analysis Of Risk-Management Practices And Legal Issues In College Natatoriums In Taiwan, Richard Hsiao

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Water-related events are the most popular all year-around activities in Taiwan. Aquatic facilities deliver value to users and the community when they are well planned and designed and meet the public’s expectations for health and safety. The focus of this research was to investigate and analyze the operation of collegiate natatoriums, the risk management practices employed by these institutions, and associated legal concerns. The purpose of this study was to provide first-hand information about risk management in general aquatic-center settings in Taiwan. The findings of this study represent 58 aquatic directors at college swimming facilities across Taiwan. The results of …

Do Tobacco-Control Programs Lower Tobacco Consumption? Evidence From California, Michael L. Marlow Nov 2007

Do Tobacco-Control Programs Lower Tobacco Consumption? Evidence From California, Michael L. Marlow

Economics

California is often considered the model for tobacco-control programs due to its early adoption of comprehensive programs aimed at lowering tobacco consumption. Tobacco control began when voters approved the California Tobacco Tax and Health Promotion Act of 1988. More than $2 billion has been spent on tobacco-control in California since 1988. The findings of this article indicate that tobacco-control spending is a significant factor for the widening gap between consumption in the United States and in California only in equations that exclude cigarette prices and smoking bans as control variables. When significant, however, estimates suggest that, for every $1 increase …

Employee Commitment In U.S. And Japanese Firms In Thailand, Richard A. Colignon, Chikako Usui, Harold Kerbo, Robert Slagter

Social Sciences

Foreign direct investment from transnational corporations across Southeast Asia provides an opportunity to examine the cross-cultural workplace. Most research on cross-cultural workplace takes place in developed countries, but little has been done on the cross-cultural workplace in developing countries. We examine the extent and determinants of organizational commitment among 959 Thai employees in 10 Japanese and American transplant corporations in the Bangkok area. These data were supplemented with in-depth interviews of Thai, Japanese and US managers in 24 transplant corporations and follow-up interviews. Consistent with the literature, we found higher levels of identification and behavioral commitment among employees of U. …

Using Confirmatory Factor Analysis To Understand Executive Control In Preschool Children: I. Latent Structure, S. A. Wiebe, K. A. Espy, D. Charak

Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications

Although many tasks have been developed recently to study executive control in the preschool years, the constructs that underlie performance on these tasks are poorly understood. In particular, it is unclear whether executive control is comprised of multiple, separable cognitive abilities (e.g., inhibition and working memory) or whether it is unitary in nature. A sample of 243 normally developing children between 2.25 and 6 years of age completed a battery of age appropriate executive control tasks. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to compare multiple models of executive control empirically. A single-factor, general model was sufficient to account for the …

The 2005 Kashmir Earthquake: A Perspective On Women's Experiences, Jennifer Parker Hamilton, Sarah Halvorson Nov 2007

The 2005 Kashmir Earthquake: A Perspective On Women's Experiences, Jennifer Parker Hamilton, Sarah Halvorson

Geography Faculty Publications

The 2005 Kashmir Earthquake is illustrative of the intensity and scope associated with catastrophic earthquake disasters in mountainous regions. The experience of the immediate aftermath, relief and recovery, and community reconstruction underscores how this event impacted mountain women, particularly in their roles in rescue and relief efforts and in rebuilding households and communities. A situational analysis was undertaken in order to document and make recommendations for the significant challenges and concerns facing women earthquake survivors in 3 of the valleys most proximate to the epicenter. Earthquake planning and mitigation strategies in northern Pakistan and elsewhere need to focus on reducing …

Cardiorespiratory Responses Of Post-Menopausal Women To Different Water Exercises, Cristine Lima Alberton, Mabel Micheline Olkoski, Stéphanie Santana Pinto, Márcio Eduardo Becker, Luiz Fernando Martins Kruel Nov 2007

Cardiorespiratory Responses Of Post-Menopausal Women To Different Water Exercises, Cristine Lima Alberton, Mabel Micheline Olkoski, Stéphanie Santana Pinto, Márcio Eduardo Becker, Luiz Fernando Martins Kruel

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The aim of the current study is to analyze and compare oxygen uptake (VO2) and heart rate (HR) in different water exercises. Eight postmenopausal women participated in a set of 4 sessions in water. Eight different exercises were randomly coupled for the 4 sessions. Each exercise was executed at a rate of 60 beats/min for 4 minutes with rest intervals of 30 min. A repeated-measures ANOVA and Bonferroni’s post hoc test were used to test for statistical differences at α < .05. Significant differences were seen in HR and VO2 between some pairs of the 8 exercises. These results suggest that water-exercises classes should be prescribed based on percentages of maximal HR or VO2, not on a fixed cadence, because different exercises correspond to different percentages of maximal effort.

Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B is a major cause of bacterial meningitis in younger populations. The available vaccines are based on outer membrane vesicles obtained from wild-type strains. In children less than 2 years old they confer protection only against strains expressing homologous PorA, a major, variable outer membrane protein (OMP). We genetically modified a strain in order to eliminate PorA and to overproduce one or several minor and conserved OMPs. Using a mouse model mimicking children's PorA-specific bactericidal activity, it was demonstrated that overproduction of more than one minor OMP is required to elicit antibodies able to induce complement-mediated killing …

Humla District in Nepal is a very remote area, prone to food shortages and characterized by a harsh environment. The livelihoods of agropastoralists in this district became much more vulnerable during the recent Maoist insurgency, and this vulnerability was particularly acute in some areas. As a result, people in different villages responded quite differently to an externally funded holistic community development project-one of the only projects the Maoists allowed to proceed with in Humla during the height of the unrest. Villagers' responses to this health- and conservation-oriented development project seem to correlate most closely with socioeconomic status and ability to …
