The Relationship Of Cognitive, Emotional, And Interpersonal Factors To Screening And HealthPromoting Behaviors Among Sisters Of Breast Cancer Patients, Sheri Jacobs Hartman
The Relationship Of Cognitive, Emotional, And Interpersonal Factors To Screening And HealthPromoting Behaviors Among Sisters Of Breast Cancer Patients, Sheri Jacobs Hartman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
While sisters of breast cancer patients are at increased risk for developing breast cancer due to their family cancer history and age, little research with first-degree relatives of cancer patients has focused solely on sisters. To address this issue, the current study examined sisters screening and health behaviors and the predictors of these behaviors. In accordance with the Parallel Processing Theory, the current study assessed the relationship of cognitive and emotional factors to screening and health-promoting behaviors among sisters of breast cancer patients. In addition, this study expanded upon the Parallel Processing Theory by also examining the relationship of interpersonal …
Development Of A Scale To Measure Parenting In Hispanic Adolescents’ Families, Evelyn Marie Alvarez
Development Of A Scale To Measure Parenting In Hispanic Adolescents’ Families, Evelyn Marie Alvarez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The ultimate goal of this research was to provide a tool to adequately examine the relationship that parenting style has with Hispanic youths' academic and behavioral outcomes. A review of the literature reveals that the field is lacking an appropriate, culturally sensitive, paper-and-pencil measure of parenting of Hispanic adolescents with adolescents reporting on their parents' behavior. Current measures were not developed with Hispanic families in mind, but rather were evaluated for use with Hispanic populations after the development phase. Therefore, the current study sought to fill this gap in the research on parenting by constructing a measure of parenting that …

Genes As Tags: The Tax Implications Of Widely Available Genetic Information, Kyle D. Logue, Joel B. Slemrod
Law & Economics Working Papers Archive: 2003-2009
This paper examines how progress in genetics' specifically, the proliferation of knowledge about the human genome' may influence the feasibility and desirability of a tax that is based on individual human endowments or ability. The paper explores various forms that such a genetic endowment tax-and-transfer regime might take and identifies some of the benefits and costs of such a regime. The authors take no position on whether a genetic endowment tax would be desirable or not. However, one contribution of the paper is to observe that current law in the U.S., which restricts the use of genetic information by insurers …

Clinic Variation In The Cost-Effectiveness Of Contingency Management, Todd A. Olmstead, Nancy M. Petry
Clinic Variation In The Cost-Effectiveness Of Contingency Management, Todd A. Olmstead, Nancy M. Petry
UCHC Articles - Research
This study determined whether, and by how much, the cost-effectiveness of contingency management (CM) varied across the eight clinics in the National Institute on Drug Abuse Clinical Trials Network MIEDAR trial. Incremental costs, incremental outcomes, and incremental costeffectiveness ratios (ICERs) of CM compared to usual care were calculated, compared and contrasted for each of the clinics. Results showed that the incremental cost of using CM compared to usual care varied by a factor of 1.9 across the clinics, ranging from an additional $306 to an additional $582 per patient. The effect of CM on the longest duration of continuous stimulant …
Concurrent Brief Versus Intensive Smoking Intervention During Alcohol Dependence Treatment, Mark D. Litt, Judith L. Cooney, Cheryl A. Oncken
Concurrent Brief Versus Intensive Smoking Intervention During Alcohol Dependence Treatment, Mark D. Litt, Judith L. Cooney, Cheryl A. Oncken
UCHC Articles - Research
Alcohol dependent smokers (N = 118) enrolled in an intensive outpatient substance abuse treatment program were randomized to a concurrent brief or intensive smoking cessation intervention. Brief treatment consisted of a 15-minute counseling session with 5 min follow-up. Intensive intervention consisted of three one-hour counseling sessions plus eight weeks of nicotine patch therapy. The cigarette abstinence rate, verified by breath CO, was significantly higher for intensive (27.5%) versus brief (6.6%) treatment at one month post quit date but not at six months when abstinence rates fell to 9.1% and 2.1%. Smoking treatment assignment did not significantly impact alcohol outcomes. …

Variation In Gabra2 Predicts Drinking Behavior In Project Match Subjects, Lance O. Bauer, Jonathan Covault, Ofer Harel, Sourish Das, Henry R. Kranzler
UCHC Articles - Research
Background Previous studies have demonstrated, and replicated, an association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within the GABRA2 gene and risk for alcohol dependence. The present study examines the association of a GABRA2 SNP with another definition of alcohol involvement and with the effects of psychosocial treatment. Methods European-American subjects (n=812, 73.4% male) provided DNA samples for the analysis. All were participants in Project MATCH, a multi-center randomized clinical trial evaluating the efficacy of three types of psychosocial treatment for alcoholism: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), or Twelve Step Facilitation (TSF). The daily probabilities of drinking and heavy …

Xml Encoding Of Features Describing Rule-Based Modeling Of Reaction Networks With Multi-Component Molecular Complexes, Michael L. Blinov, Ion I. Moraru
UCHC Articles - Research
Multi-state molecules and multi-component complexes are commonly involved in cellular signaling. Accounting for molecules that have multiple potential states, such as a protein that may be phosphorylated on multiple residues, and molecules that combine to form heterogeneous complexes located among multiple compartments, generates an effect of combinatorial complexity. Models involving relatively few signaling molecules can include thousands of distinct chemical species. Several software tools (StochSim, BioNetGen) are already available to deal with combinatorial complexity. Such tools need information standards if models are to be shared, jointly evaluated and developed. Here we discuss XML conventions that can be adopted for modeling …

A good idea is not enough to launch a new journal; there must also be demand for it. Bibliometric analysis of a newly launched journal can demonstrate how it contributes to the community it serves and whether it is meeting this demand.

Identifiability And Estimation Of Causal Effects In Randomized Trials With Noncompliance And Completely Non-Ignorable Missing-Data, Hua Chen, Zhi Geng, Xiao-Hua Zhou
UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series
In this paper we first studied parameter identifiability in randomized clinical trials with noncompliance and missing outcomes. We showed that under certain conditions the parameters of interest were identifiable even under different types of completely non-ignorable missing data, that is, the missing mechanism depends on the outcome. We then derived their maximum likelihood (ML) and moment estimators and evaluated their finite-sample properties in simulation studies in terms of bias, efficiency and robustness. Our sensitive analysis showed the assumed non-ignorable missing- data model had an important impact on the estimated complier average causal effect (CACE) parameter. Our new method provides some new …
