Anti-Tumor Effect Of Doxycycline On Glioblastoma Cells, Andrea Wang-Gillam, Eric Siegel, Debra A. Mayes, Laura F. Hutchins, Yi-Hong Zhou Nov 2007

Anti-Tumor Effect Of Doxycycline On Glioblastoma Cells, Andrea Wang-Gillam, Eric Siegel, Debra A. Mayes, Laura F. Hutchins, Yi-Hong Zhou

Neuroscience, Cell Biology & Physiology Faculty Publications

AIM: Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common primary brain tumor in humans, and it is highly invasive. Doxycycline, first identified as an antimicrobial agent, is a nonspecific inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). Our objective was to investigate the anti-MMP effect of doxycycline at therapeutically acceptable levels on glioma cells in vitro.

METHODS: The MTT assay was used to determine the anti-proliferative effects of doxycycline. MMP2 activity and expression were determined by gelatinase zymography and real-time quantitative RT-PCR, respectively. Cell invasion was assessed by Matrigel invasion assay.

RESULTS: Doxycycline exerted mild anti-proliferative effects on all three glioma cell lines …

A Conserved Cam- And Radial Spoke–Associated Complex Mediates Regulation Of Flagellar Dynein Activity, Erin E. Dymek, Elizabeth F. Smith Nov 2007

A Conserved Cam- And Radial Spoke–Associated Complex Mediates Regulation Of Flagellar Dynein Activity, Erin E. Dymek, Elizabeth F. Smith

Dartmouth Scholarship

For virtually all cilia and eukaryotic flagella, the second messengers calcium and cyclic adenosine monophosphate are implicated in modulating dynein- driven microtubule sliding to regulate beating. Calmodulin (CaM) localizes to the axoneme and is a key calcium sensor involved in regulating motility. Using immunoprecipitation and mass spectrometry, we identify members of a CaM-containing complex that are involved in regulating dynein activity. This complex includes flagellar-associated protein 91 (FAP91), which shares considerable sequence similarity to AAT-1, a protein originally identified in testis as an A-kinase anchor protein (AKAP)- binding protein. FAP91 directly interacts with radial spoke protein 3 (an AKAP), which …

A New Environmental Order: Laying The Legal And Administrative Foundation For Global Environmental Governance, Deepa Badrinarayana Nov 2007

A New Environmental Order: Laying The Legal And Administrative Foundation For Global Environmental Governance, Deepa Badrinarayana

Dissertations & Theses

This dissertation argues that global environmental governance can be strengthened by structuring legal and administrative mechanisms to meet the demands of the current world order. In particular, this dissertation provides a theoretical analysis of those legal and administrative mechanisms that can improve environmental governance in a globalizing world. However, since it is a theoretical analysis, this dissertation does not assert that the analysis in itself will simplify the process of strengthening the rule of law, resolve all environmental issues, or require every single environmental problem to be addressed through an international process. Rather, the objective of the analysis is to …

Source Tracking Of Microbial Intrusion In Water Systems Using Artificial Neural Networks, Minyoung Kim, Christopher Y. Choi, Charles P. Garba Nov 2007

Source Tracking Of Microbial Intrusion In Water Systems Using Artificial Neural Networks, Minyoung Kim, Christopher Y. Choi, Charles P. Garba

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

A ‘‘what-if’’ scenario where biological agents are accidentally or deliberately introduced into a water system was generated, and artificial neural network (ANN) models were applied to identify the pathogenic release location to isolate the contaminated area and minimize its hazards. The spatiotemporal distribution of Escherichia coli 15597 along the water system was employed to locate pollutants by inversely interpreting transport patterns of Escherichia coli using ANNs. Results showed that dispersion patterns of Escherichia coli were positively correlated to pH, turbidity, and conductivity (R2 = 0.90–0.96), and the ANN models successfully identified the source location of Escherichia coli introduced into …

Outcomes Of Religious And Spiritual Adaptations To Psychotherapy: A Meta-Analytic Review, Timothy B. Smith, Jeremy Bartz, P. Scott Richards Nov 2007

Outcomes Of Religious And Spiritual Adaptations To Psychotherapy: A Meta-Analytic Review, Timothy B. Smith, Jeremy Bartz, P. Scott Richards

Faculty Publications

The use of spiritually oriented psychotherapies has increased dramatically during the past decade. This article reports a meta-analysis of 31 outcome studies of spiritual therapies conducted from 1984 to 2005 with clients suffering from a variety of psychological problems. Across the 31 studies, the random-effects weighted average effect size was 0.56. This finding provides some empirical evidence that spiritually oriented psychotherapy approaches may be beneficial to individuals with certain psychological problems (e.g., depression, anxiety, stress, eating disorders). Recommendations for future research in this domain are offered.

Effect Of Management Decisions On Farm And Household Outcomes In An Integrated Crop-Livestock Agro-Ecosystem In Yucatan, Mexico, David Parsons, Jerome H. Cherney, Charles F. Nicholson, Robert W. Blake, Quirine M. Ketterings, Luis Ramirez-Aviles, Luis O. Tedeschi Nov 2007

Effect Of Management Decisions On Farm And Household Outcomes In An Integrated Crop-Livestock Agro-Ecosystem In Yucatan, Mexico, David Parsons, Jerome H. Cherney, Charles F. Nicholson, Robert W. Blake, Quirine M. Ketterings, Luis Ramirez-Aviles, Luis O. Tedeschi

Agribusiness

Mixed farming systems are defined by Sere and Steinfeld (1996) as those in which more than 10% of the dry matter fed to livestock comes from crop by-products or stubble, and more than 10% of the value of production comes from non-livestock farming activities. More simply, they are systems where livestock rearing and crop cultivation are, to a greater or lesser extent, integrated components of one farming system. The more integrated systems are characterized by interdependency between crop and livestock activity, optimizing circulation of locally available nutrients. The less integrated systems are those in which crop and livestock activities make …

Serving Refugee Teens: An Analysis Of The Working Relationship Between Resettlement Agencies And Public High Schools In Tucson, Arizona, Kelly L. Nafie Nov 2007

Serving Refugee Teens: An Analysis Of The Working Relationship Between Resettlement Agencies And Public High Schools In Tucson, Arizona, Kelly L. Nafie

Capstone Collection

This study examines the relationship between high schools and refugee resettlement agencies in Tucson, Arizona. Through twenty individual and group interviews with teachers, school administrators and refugee resettlement agency staff and volunteers, elements of collaboration and communication between the entities were assessed to determine the strength of the existing relationship and its potential for development. Mattesich and Monsey’s fifteen factors of successful collaboration (1992) were used to develop research questions, and Isett’s 2005 model for interorganizational network formation was used to analyze the stage at which the current relationship between agencies and schools lies and what elements need to be …
