Nurturing Care For China’S Orphaned Children, Janice N. Cotton, Carolyn P. Edwards, Wen Zhao, Jerònia Muntaner Gelabert

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

As the number of children orphaned or abandoned worldwide rises, we worry about their rights and welfare. Children without parents or loving guardians are vulnerable to neglect, poor health care, and diminished education. Many come to live in institutions where they may experience a host of long-term problems, including malnutrition, growth retardation, sensory processing difficulties, behavioral and attachment disorders, and cognitive and language delays (e.g., Rutter, Quinton, & Hill 1990; Judge 1999; Zeanah 2000; Beckett et al. 2002). Yet, people are finding helpful solutions. Half the Sky Foundation (HTS) conducts infant nurture and preschool enrichment programs that dramatically enhance the …

Use Of Flax In America, Donna C. Parker Nov 2007

Use Of Flax In America, Donna C. Parker

SCL Faculty and Staff Publications

Flax is the oldest plant fiber used by man. Its moisture-absorbent qualities and ability to conduct heat make linen a cool cloth for wear in hot climates. Fine linen fabrics became soft, beautiful and lustrous with use. Tow, the short fibers, was used to produce rougher cloth. Through the centuries workers have processed the plant in much the same manner. It was a labor-intensive and highly-skilled process not suited to mechanization. By the time of European settlement, it’s manufacture and trade were well established in Europe; settlers to the New World brought the knowledge and skills with them.

Pre-Mrna Secondary Structures Influence Exon Recognition, Michael Hiller, Zhaiyi Zhang, Rolf Backofen, Stefan Stamm Nov 2007

Pre-Mrna Secondary Structures Influence Exon Recognition, Michael Hiller, Zhaiyi Zhang, Rolf Backofen, Stefan Stamm

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The secondary structure of a pre-mRNA influences a number of processing steps including alternative splicing. Since most splicing regulatory proteins bind to single-stranded RNA, the sequestration of RNA into double strands could prevent their binding. Here, we analyzed the secondary structure context of experimentally determined splicing enhancer and silencer motifs in their natural pre-mRNA context. We found that these splicing motifs are significantly more single-stranded than controls. These findings were validated by transfection experiments, where the effect of enhancer or silencer motifs on exon skipping was much more pronounced in single-stranded conformation. We also found that the structural context of …

Oral History Interview With Dr. Gordie Howell, Gordie Howell, Wenxian Zhang Nov 2007

Oral History Interview With Dr. Gordie Howell, Gordie Howell, Wenxian Zhang

Oral Histories

Gordon E. Howell, or Gordie as he prefers to be called, came to Rollins in search of a master's degree in economics. During his years as a student, he helped teach economics and scuba diving. For three years, he worked as a football coach at Winter Park High school, but by 1967 he returned to Rollins as a physical educator.

A native of North Carolina, Howell attended Western Carolina University for his undergraduate degree before joining the Marines, where he rose to the rank of captain. Taking weekend courses at the University of Virginia inspired him to pursue a career …

Characterization Of Putative Magnesium Transport Systems In Yeast, Andrew James Franklin Nov 2007

Characterization Of Putative Magnesium Transport Systems In Yeast, Andrew James Franklin

Theses

Magnesium (Mg2+) is essential for all life, and is utilized for many important biological processes. Despite the fundamental importance of Mg2+ homeostasis to life, relatively little is known about Mg2+ homeostasis in eukaryotes. The goal of this work was to identify proteins required for the active transport of Mg2+, which are essential to prevent the overaccumulation of cytosolic Mg2+, but have not been identified from any organism. In yeast, a vacuolar Mg2+/H+ exchange activity has been described but the molecular identify of this protein is unknown. To try and identify this activity, a candidate gene approach was used. Four yeast …

"Either You Conquer It, Or It Conquers You": An Applied Anthropological Approach To Veterans With A Spinal Cord Injury, Sherman Chow Nov 2007

"Either You Conquer It, Or It Conquers You": An Applied Anthropological Approach To Veterans With A Spinal Cord Injury, Sherman Chow

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Veterans with a spinal cord injury (SCI) engage in a complex and, often times, difficult dialogue within and through interactions in American society. That is, American society holds dear certain traditional values (ideals, beliefs, and customs) that promote the steady functioning and fabric of society. Through the process of enculturation and acculturation, likely, the majority of American citizens have already internalized many of these values. These values are cultural constructs of American society that can certainly influence and shape the myriad ways in which individual identity is formed.

By identifying these value sets and analyzing the ways in which SCI …
