The Effects Of Deep Breathing And Positive Imagery On Stress And Coherence Levels Among College-Age Women, Sheerah R. Tice Nov 2007

The Effects Of Deep Breathing And Positive Imagery On Stress And Coherence Levels Among College-Age Women, Sheerah R. Tice

Senior Honors Theses

Stress is steadily becoming a problem of epidemic proportions in American society. Diseases and other health problems that are a direct result of high, chronic stress levels are on the rise. As bad as they are, the physical effects of stress are not the only concern. There are also mental and emotional concerns to increased and continuous stress levels. It is therefore vitally important for people to learn effective methods for reducing stress. This study investigates two techniques done together, deep breathing and positive imagery, for their effectiveness in reducing stress and increasing coherence. The sample consisted of thirty 18-26 …

The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In National Periodicals: 1991-2000, Casey William Olson Nov 2007

The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In National Periodicals: 1991-2000, Casey William Olson

Theses and Dissertations

From 1991 through 2000, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints experienced a greater volume of national periodical attention than ever before in its history. This thesis surveys what was written about the Church in national magazines during that time and provides analysis of the effect of those writings on the Church's public image. National periodicals may serve as an important gauge of the Church's public image because they address topics of national interest and also help to formulate public opinion on those topics. This study thus provides a basis for determining how the Church fared in terms of …

A Dipeptidyl Aminopeptidase-Like Protein Remodels Gating Charge Dynamics In Kv4.2 Channels, Kevin Dougherty, Manuel Covarrubias Nov 2007

A Dipeptidyl Aminopeptidase-Like Protein Remodels Gating Charge Dynamics In Kv4.2 Channels, Kevin Dougherty, Manuel Covarrubias

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Dipeptidyl aminopeptidase–like proteins (DPLPs) interact with Kv4 channels and thereby induce a profound remodeling of activation and inactivation gating. DPLPs are constitutive components of the neuronal Kv4 channel complex, and recent observations have suggested the critical functional role of the single transmembrane segment of these proteins (Zagha, E., A. Ozaita, S.Y. Chang, M.S. Nadal, U. Lin, M.J. Saganich, T. McCormack, K.O. Akinsanya, S.Y. Qi, and B. Rudy. 2005. J. Biol. Chem. 280:18853–18861). However, the underlying mechanism of action is unknown. We hypothesized that a unique interaction between the Kv4.2 channel and a DPLP found in brain (DPPX-S) may remodel the …

Improving Protein Crystal Quality By Selective Removal Of A Ca 2+-Dependent Membrane-Insertion Loop, David B. Neau, Nathaniel C. Gilbert, Sue G. Bartlett, Adam Dassey, Marcia E. Newcomer Nov 2007

Improving Protein Crystal Quality By Selective Removal Of A Ca 2+-Dependent Membrane-Insertion Loop, David B. Neau, Nathaniel C. Gilbert, Sue G. Bartlett, Adam Dassey, Marcia E. Newcomer

Faculty Publications

Lipoxygenases (LOXs) catalyze the regiospecific and stereospecific dioxygenation of polyunsaturated membrane-embedded fatty acids. A Ca 2+-dependent membrane-binding function was localized to the amino-terminal C2-like domain of 8R-lipoxygenase (8R-LOX) from the soft coral Plexaura homomalla. The 3.2 Å crystal structure of 8R-LOX and spectroscopic data suggested that Ca2+ stabilizes two membrane-insertion loops. Analysis of the protein packing contacts in the crystal lattice indicated that the conformation of one of the two loops complicated efforts to improve the resolution of the X-ray data. A deletion mutant of 8R-LOX in which the corresponding membrane-insertion loop is absent (Δ41-45:GSLOX) was engineered. Removal of the …

Membranous Dysmenorrhea: A Case Series, Hatim A. Omar, Shawn J. Smith Nov 2007

Membranous Dysmenorrhea: A Case Series, Hatim A. Omar, Shawn J. Smith

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

The purpose was to illustrate the variability of hormonal contraception of patients that presented with membranous dysmenorrheal. A case analysis chart review was completed on six patients referred to a Pediatric Gynecologist in an academic setting. In each case the patient underwent a thorough pelvic and bimanual exam. Following the initial presentation, each patient continued to be followed on a regular visits. Cases: Two were using the transdermal contraceptive patch and oral contraceptive, but following the expulsion of decidual cast, they were both placed on depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) without further complications. Three of the six cases were on DMPA …

Nonsexual Transmission Of Anogenital Warts In Children: A Retrospective Analysis, Valerie Jones, Shawn J. Smith, Hatim A. Omar

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

The purpose was to evaluate the prevalence of sexual abuse in patients who were referred to a pediatric gynecologist for evaluation based on the clinical findings of anogenital warts. A retrospective analysis was performed on 131 patients between the ages 6 month and 9 years referred to a pediatric gynecologist after the finding of anogenital warts by a clinical provider, parent or caregiver. A complete physical examination under colposcopy by a the same, trained pediatric gynecologist was completed, and a complete medical and family history including maternal and sibling history for evidence of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and anogenital warts. The …
