Accessibility Of Wvu Websites For Individuals With Vision Impairments, Sarah Jacobin Dec 2007

Accessibility Of Wvu Websites For Individuals With Vision Impairments, Sarah Jacobin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Recently, several major corporations have been sued because their websites are inaccessible to individuals with disabilities. For a website to be accessible, people with disabilities should be able to navigate and interact with the site. Individuals who are blind or have vision impairments have difficulty accessing websites because they commonly use assistive technology to interpret content. This study is the first comprehensive study assessing the accessibility of WVU websites for individuals with disabilities, specifically individuals with visual impairments and comparing those results to those of two comparable universities in other areas of the country. Compliance with specifications of website accessibility …

Application Of The Emotional Intelligence Construct To College Student Binge Drinking, Jeffrey P. Dulko Dec 2007

Application Of The Emotional Intelligence Construct To College Student Binge Drinking, Jeffrey P. Dulko

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Although extensive research has been conducted in the area of college binge drinking, relatively little has been done to study differences among alcohol-related consequences. Some initial studies have shown that binge drinking and its consequences are associated with several emotional and interpersonal factors, but there has been no comprehensive examination of these relationships. The theory of emotional intelligence (EI) has been developed recently to study emotional and interpersonal factors as an integrated construct. Research of the relationship between alcohol and EI could provide a valuable base for which to design alcohol prevention programs that target improving emotional and interpersonal deficits …

The Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator: Regulation By Hsp-90, Kevin Marrs Dec 2007

The Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator: Regulation By Hsp-90, Kevin Marrs

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

The hypothesis of this project is that a functionally relevant association exists between CFTR and Hsp90. In testing this hypothesis, (a) the association of CFTR and Hsp90 is confirmed via crosslinking and immunoprecipitation of CFTR from stably transfected HEK-293 cells, electrophoretic separation of cross-linked proteins, and protein identification via SDS-PAGE, western blotting, and mass spectrometry. Also, this hypothesis is tested by (b) functionally assessing the effect of Hsp90 on CFTR function via Ussing chamber analysis, two-electrode voltage clamp analysis, preliminary in vivoanimal studies, and protein phosphorylation. The HEK-293 Flag-CFTR cells used in this study allows for a high degree …

Theoretical And Experimental Evaluation Of Spatial Resolution In A Variable Resolution X-Ray Computed Tomography Scanner, Roman Melnyk Dec 2007

Theoretical And Experimental Evaluation Of Spatial Resolution In A Variable Resolution X-Ray Computed Tomography Scanner, Roman Melnyk

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

A variable resolution x-ray (VRX) computed tomography (CT) scanner can image objects of various sizes with greatly improved spatial resolution. The scanner employs an angulated discrete detector and achieves the resolution boost by matching the detector angulation to the scanner field of view (FOV) determined by the size of an object being imaged. A comprehensive evaluation of spatial resolution in an experimental version of the VRX CT scanner is presented in this dissertation. Two components of this resolution were evaluated – the pre-reconstruction spatial resolution, described by the detector presampling modulation transfer function (MTF), and the post-reconstruction spatial resolution, given …

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

The lytic cycle of phage Mu is regulated by a transcriptional cascade consisting of early, middle and late transcription. The Mor protein is an activator of the middle promoter Pm and is encoded by the last gene of the early transcript. The C protein is an activator of the four late promoters Plys, PI, PP, and Pmom and is expressed from the middle transcript. Both Mor and C proteins bind an imperfect dyad-symmetry element just upstream and overlapping the –35 region of Pm and Plys respectively. The main aims of this study was, (1) To understand the binding specificity of …

Synthesis Of Novel Sulfonamide-Based Calpain Inhibitors And Their Potential As Anti-Tumor Agents, Jin Xu Dec 2007

Synthesis Of Novel Sulfonamide-Based Calpain Inhibitors And Their Potential As Anti-Tumor Agents, Jin Xu

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Calpain is a class of intracellular cytoplasmic cysteine proteases.1 The enzyme participates in different intracellular signaling pathways that are mediated by Ca2+.2 The two major isoforms of calpain universally distributed in most mammalian tissues are calpain 1 (µ-calpain) and calpain 2 (m-calpain). The exact in vivo function of the enzyme is not clear, but calpain has been implicated in a variety of physiological and pathological conditions,3 such as cancer, stroke, cardiac ischaemia, muscular dystrophy, cataract and Alzheimer’s disease. Calpain inhibitors are therefore of interest as therapeutic agents and as biomedical tools.

Several potent calpain inhibitors isolated from natural sources as …

Cardiopulmonary Predicators Of Dysfunctional Ventilator Weaning Response After Coronary Artery Bypass Graft, Annapoorna Mary Dec 2007

Cardiopulmonary Predicators Of Dysfunctional Ventilator Weaning Response After Coronary Artery Bypass Graft, Annapoorna Mary

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Although the majority of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery patients are extubated within 6 to 8 hours following surgery, 20% to 40% of patients remain intubated 12 hours after surgery due to dysfunctional ventilator weaning response (DVWR). DVWR associated with increased morbidity and mortality (30% to 43%) following CABG surgery. Finding significant antecedence to predict DVWR could help to identify and prevent the complications from DVWR after CABG surgery. Literature review revealed that there is an association between cardiopulmonary indicators (CPI) and DVWR after CABG surgery. Cardiopulmonary indicators are the selected hemodynamic parameters that have an association with DVWR. …

The Legal Ethics Of Pediatric Research, Doriane Lambelet Coleman Dec 2007

The Legal Ethics Of Pediatric Research, Doriane Lambelet Coleman

Duke Law Journal

Since the mid- to late 1990s, the scientific and medical research community has sought to increase its access to healthy children for research protocols that involve harm or a risk of harm. This move reverses longstanding policy within that community generally to exclude healthy children from such protocols on the grounds that the research as to them is non-therapeutic, that they are particularly vulnerable to research-related abuses, and that they are unable themselves to give informed consent to their participation. The research community's new posture has been supported by prominent pediatric bioethicists who have argued that unless healthy children are …

The Long-Term Teratogenic Effect Of Prenatal Alcohol Exposure On The Somatosensory And Motor Cortex Of Rats, Tyson Chappell Dec 2007

The Long-Term Teratogenic Effect Of Prenatal Alcohol Exposure On The Somatosensory And Motor Cortex Of Rats, Tyson Chappell

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

The primary goal of this dissertation was to examine the long-term effect of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) on the primary somatosensory (SI) and primary motor cortex (MI). For over 30 years, PAE has been shown to produce a triad of symptoms (growth deficits, craniofacial dysmorphologies and central nervous system disruptions) diagnosed as fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) in children and adults. Since low to moderate levels of prenatal alcohol exposure are less likely to produce FAS symptoms in children, the term “PAE” in this dissertation typically refers to heavy/abusive/chronic levels of prenatal alcohol exposure (in humans this equates to 5+ drinks/per …

Investigating Web-Based Recruitment Sources: Employee Testimonials Vs Word-Of-Mouse, Greet Van Hoye, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Although the internet has dramatically changed recruitment practices, many web-based recruitment sources have not yet been investigated. The present study examines the effects of web-based employee testimonials and web-based word-of-mouth (i.e., 'word-of-mouse') on organizational attraction. The source credibility framework is used to compare these company-dependent and company-independent recruitment sources. In a sample of potential applicants for a head nurse position, word-of-mouse was associated with higher organizational attractiveness than web-based employee testimonials. However, potential applicants were more attracted when testimonials provided information about individual employees than about the organization. Conversely, word-of-mouse was associated with higher organizational attractiveness and more organizational pursuit …

Black Feminist Autobiographical Inquiry Into The Experiences Of A Teen Mom, Advis Dell Wilkerson Dec 2007

Black Feminist Autobiographical Inquiry Into The Experiences Of A Teen Mom, Advis Dell Wilkerson

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Using Black feminist thought as the theoretical framework and autobiographical inquiry as methodology, I explored ways in which adversity fostered resiliency of character. Despite difficult circumstances, such as growing up in a poor, single-parent household and becoming pregnant in the 9th grade when continuing one's education after pregnancy or marriage was not permitted in the Deep South, with the help of others, I fought to finish my high school education and succeeded in college. I credit a close bond with a supportive adult and my own development of racial awareness with helping me to turn obstacles into successes. My intent …

Man Behind The Curtain: The 2004 Election From A Historical Perspective, Melissa Michelle Merritt Dec 2007

Man Behind The Curtain: The 2004 Election From A Historical Perspective, Melissa Michelle Merritt

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The 2004 election was a very contentious display of modern democracy. It illustrated that political candidates market themselves as though they were products to be bought from a store. By utilizing newspaper articles, autobiographies, and various other sources, this study seeks to show several things. First, it illustrates the evolution of presidential campaigns from the first contested election until the controversial 2000 election. Second, it traces the rise of the Christian Right. It then delves into the Cold War and the War on Terror as a continuation of the former. Finally, the study culminates with an examination of the 2004 …

Design And Real-Time Control Of Shipboard Power System Testbed, Pradeep Pant

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The objective of this thesis is to design and test a small scale testbed for the all-electric shipboard power distribution system. Shipboard power system is increasingly becoming more reconfigurable, and multi-agent systems are developed to automate routine operation and emergency reconfiguration. Underlying algorithms of these systems have been verified using software simulation tools. However, these simulators run in soft realtime by using simple mathematical models to represent the physical system. These models do not incorporate every aspect of the physical system. A testbed provides a cost effective physical environment to verify these algorithms and control techniques in the real world. …

Geographic Decomposition Of Inequality In Health And Wealth: Evidence From Cambodia, Tomoki Fujii Dec 2007

Geographic Decomposition Of Inequality In Health And Wealth: Evidence From Cambodia, Tomoki Fujii

Research Collection School Of Economics

The small-area estimation developed by Elbers, Lanjouw and Lanjouw (2002, 2003), in which a census and a survey are combined to produce the estimates of welfare measures for small geographic areas, has become a standard tool for poverty analysis in developing countries. The small-area estimates are typically plotted on a map, which are commonly called a poverty map. Poverty maps proved useful for policy analysis and formulation, and have become increasingly popular among policy-makers and researchers. In Cambodia, poverty maps have been used by various international organizations, ministries and non-governmental organizations for analyzing the poverty situations for their operation areas, …

Extensions Of Two-Part Tests To Compare K Independent Populations, Marwan Daoud Dec 2007

Extensions Of Two-Part Tests To Compare K Independent Populations, Marwan Daoud

Dissertations

We consider two-part models that are mixtures of a point-mass variable with all mass at zero and a continuous random variable. The model may assume a particular distributionh(x) for the continuous part such as a log-normal or a gamma. The response variable is defined as y=(x, d), where d=1 if x > 0 and d=0 if x = 0. The probability distribution function has the following form: fx,d=p 1-d×1-p ×hx d.

Lachenbruch (1976, 2001) proposed several tests to compare means of two populations for this type of data. We proposed a two-part Wald test and …

Contexts And Corporate Voluntary Environmental Behaviors: Examining The Epa's Green Lights Voluntary Program, Seong-Gin Moon, Peter Deleon

Peer Reviewed Articles - Public, Nonprofit, and Health Administration

Why do an increasingly large number of firms choose to spend their own money and resources to protect the environment beyond the extant regulatory requirements? This article addresses this question by examining the EPA’s Green Lights (GL) voluntary program in which a firm’s policy makers made an early commitment to limiting greenhouse gases through the installation of energy-efficient lighting technology in its facilities. Two theoretical perspectives—resource-based theory and neo-institutional theory—are adopted to investigate the contexts by which a firm is encouraged to undertake voluntary environmental actions and evaluate environmental strategies associated with them. Accordingly, the authors focus on two major …

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

MicroRNAs (miRNAs), a large class of short noncoding RNAs found in many plants and animals, often act to post-transcriptionally inhibit gene expression. We report the generation of deletion mutations in 87 miRNA genes in Caenorhabditis elegans, expanding the number of mutated miRNA genes to 95, or 83% of known C. elegans miRNAs. We find that the majority of miRNAs are not essential for the viability or development of C. elegans, and mutations in most miRNA genes do not result in grossly abnormal phenotypes. These observations are consistent with the hypothesis that there is significant functional redundancy among miRNAs …

BACKGROUND: Perioperative myocardial injury (PMI) remains a major cause of perioperative morbidity and mortality but clinical strategies to prevent PMI are still uncertain.

METHODS AND RESULTS: We comprehensively searched PubMed for major research articles concerning clinical strategies to prevent PMI. The key findings are as follows: (1) the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association guideline update for perioperative cardiovascular evaluation for noncardiac surgery is very useful to stratify cardiac risk preoperatively; (2) cardiac troponin has emerged as a biomarker to diagnose postoperative PMI and to predict clinical outcomes; (3) coronary revascularization before noncardiac surgery probably would provide cardiac protection in …

God's Design And Phonemic Awareness: What Is Phonemic Awareness, What Is Phonics, And What Does God Have To Do With It?, Jill A. Jones, Connie Mcdonald Nov 2007

God's Design And Phonemic Awareness: What Is Phonemic Awareness, What Is Phonics, And What Does God Have To Do With It?, Jill A. Jones, Connie Mcdonald

Christian Perspectives in Education

Phonemic awareness is the foundation for a child’s literacy development. God’s initial interaction with man after creation, through the spoken word, bestows authority on oral language. Manipulation of language begins in infancy and continues throughout one’s life. Teachers need to understand what phonemic awareness entails in order to develop and assess a child’s development in this area.
