Community-Based Long-Term Care: Wisconsin Stays Ahead, Judith D. Moore, Carol O'Shaughnessy, Lisa Sprague

National Health Policy Forum

This report describes a site visit to Wisconsin in August 2007 that focused on the use of home and community-based services, both public and private, to delay or avoid the need for institutional care. Wisconsin was chosen because it has long been a leader among states in developing such services for the elderly and persons with disabilities. At the time of the visit, a managed long-term care program, Family Care, was operating on a pilot basis in five counties. The Partnership Program, a four-site demonstration integrating acute and long-term care for the dual eligible population (both frail elderly and younger …

Chinese Family Strengths And Resiliency, Anqi Xu, Xiaolin Xie, Wenli Liu, Yan Ruth Xia, Dalin Liu

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Chinese family and marriage strengths and challenges are delineated in this article, including equity in marriage, affection, the ability to adapt to changes, mutual trust, compatibility, harmony, and family support. Despite the fact that Chinese households are getting smaller as a result of governmental policy and the broadening of housing markets, families remain crucial support networks, especially in the areas of socialization and intergenerational relationships. Current research on Chinese marriages and families is cited, outlining attitudinal changes regarding mate selection, divorce, and childbirth between genders, between older and younger generations, and between urban and rural residents.

The Effect Of Water Walking On The Lower Limb Motion Of Older Adults, Adriana M. Degani, Alessander Danna-Dos-Santos Aug 2007

The Effect Of Water Walking On The Lower Limb Motion Of Older Adults, Adriana M. Degani, Alessander Danna-Dos-Santos

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The authors investigated the lower limb movements for older adults walking at their preferred speed in shallow water to obtain information to help professionals prescribe exercises in a pool. The 8 participants presented a) similar hip and thigh motions in water and on land, although a reduced thigh velocity was observed in the water; b) increased knee flexion at the beginning of the walking cycle and reduced knee extension throughout the walking cycle in water; c) reduced ankle motion throughout the walking cycle and plantar flexion during the swing phase in water; d) reduced shank motion and velocity in water; …

Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Faculty Publications

Oxidative stress is thought to play a role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and increased oxidative DNA damage has been observed in brain tissue from AD patients. Base excision repair (BER) is the primary DNA repair pathway for small base modifications such as alkylation, deamination and oxidation. In this study, we have investigated alterations in the BER capacity in brains of AD patients. We employed a set of functional assays to measure BER activities in brain tissue from short post-mortem interval autopsies of 10 sporadic AD patients and 10 age-matched controls. BER activities were also measured in brain …

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren: Stressors, Social Support, And Health Outcomes, Sharon Leder, Linda Nicholson Grinstead, Elisa Torres

Peer Reviewed Articles

The major purpose of this study was to identify predictors of grandparent caregiver health status. Additional purposes were to describe the physical and emotional health of grandparent caregivers and the perceived benefits of support group attendance. A convenience sample of 42 grandparents was recruited from support groups. Data were collected through telephone interviews. Grandparents who had higher parenting stress reported lower levels of physical, social, and mental health. Inverse correlations were present between life stress and mental health. Positive correlations were found between social support and physical health. No pattern emerged in a comparison of the health of care-giving grandparents …

Selection For Rapid Embryo Development Correlates With Embryo Exposure To Maternal Androgens Among Passerine Birds, Hubert Schwabl, Maria G. Palacios, Thomas E. Martin Aug 2007

Selection For Rapid Embryo Development Correlates With Embryo Exposure To Maternal Androgens Among Passerine Birds, Hubert Schwabl, Maria G. Palacios, Thomas E. Martin

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

Greater offspring predation favors evolution of faster development among species. We hypothesized that greater offspring predation exerts selection on mothers to increase levels of anabolic androgens in egg yolks to achieve faster development. Here, we tested whether (1) concentrations of yolk androgens in passerine species were associated with offspring predation and (2) embryo and nestling development rates were associated with yolk androgen concentrations. We examined three androgens that increase in potency along the synthesis pathway: androstenedione (A(4)) to testosterone (T) to 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone (5 alpha-DHT). Concentrations of none of these steroids were related to clutch size; only A, was allometrically …

Chronic Administration Of R-Flurbiprofen Attenuates Learning Impairments In Transgenic Amyloid Precursor Protein Mice, Thomas Kukar, Sonya Prescott, Jason L. Eriksen, Vallie Holloway, M. Paul Murphy, Edward H. Koo, Todd E. Golde, Michelle M. Nicolle

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Long-term use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is associated with a reduced incidence of Alzheimer's disease (AD). We and others have shown that certain NSAIDs reduce secretion of Abeta42 in cell culture and animal models, and that the effect of NSAIDs on Abeta42 is independent of the inhibition of cyclooxygenase by these compounds. Since Abeta42 is hypothesized to be the initiating pathologic molecule in AD, the ability of these compounds to lower Abeta42 selectively may be associated with their protective effect. We have previously identified R-flurbiprofen (tarenflurbil) as a selective Abeta42 lowering agent with greatly reduced cyclooxygenase activity that …

Treatment Decision-Making In Older Adults With Cancer, Maribeth Hercinger

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Decision-making for cancer treatment is becoming more and more complex and individuals are expected to be active participants in this process. As the diagnosis of cancer occurs more frequently among adults, health care professionals must be accountable to place a greater emphasis on assisting individuals with the difficult treatment decisions.

This study explored the experiences of older adults when making decisions for cancer treatment using a phenomenological approach. Thirteen in-depth, face-to-face interviews were completed with individuals who experienced a new diagnosis of cancer. Participants of the study included eight females and five males ages 51-83 years of age. Five major …
