The Role Of Social Capital In Creating Effective Global Supply Chains, Susan I. Scott, Ruth Clarke Jun 2007

The Role Of Social Capital In Creating Effective Global Supply Chains, Susan I. Scott, Ruth Clarke

HCBE Faculty Presentations

In this paper we examine the relationship between the concept of social capital and the creation of effective global supply chains. Recent literature cites the effective global supply chain as a source of competitive advantage for firms competing in the global economy. Evidence exists that global firms now compete through the entire supply chain for each industry, raising the bar for strategic consideration. A global supply chain is comprised of multiple organizations, geographically dispersed, but linked by economic transactions, which enable the root firm to satisfy customer needs. The increase in information technology management is critical in coordinating the work …

E-Banking In Emerging Markets: Shifting The Competitive Landscape, Jennifer Isern, Ruth Clarke Jun 2007

E-Banking In Emerging Markets: Shifting The Competitive Landscape, Jennifer Isern, Ruth Clarke

HCBE Faculty Presentations

This paper discusses the dynamics of competition in the financial services industry, and theories of competition that explain sometimes counter-intuitive effects observed over the last fifty years. We present arguments here that new forces are taking hold in the financial services industry that may change existing competition paradigms. Electronic banking is thriving in Japan, Europe, and the U.S. as customers click their mouse, press telephone keys, and slide cards to conduct their banking. Increasingly, banks and other financial service providers are starting to launch many of these same innovations in developing countries. Emerging markets are in the position of developing …

Testimony On Law Enforcement In Indian Country Before The United States Senate Committee On Indian Affairs, 110th Congress, 1st Session, Kevin Washburn

Faculty Scholarship

Public safety and criminal justice on Indian reservations are better served when Indian tribes play a central role in these functions. Most of the successes of law enforcement in Indian country have involved careful cooperation and coordination between law enforcement agencies of different sovereigns. Even informal cooperation can be highly effective in improving public safety. Lack of cooperation undermines public safety.

Effects Of Exotic Grasses On Soil Seed Banks In Southeastern Arizona Grasslands, Steven P. Mclaughlin, Janice E. Bowers Jun 2007

Effects Of Exotic Grasses On Soil Seed Banks In Southeastern Arizona Grasslands, Steven P. Mclaughlin, Janice E. Bowers

Western North American Naturalist

At the Appleton-Whittell Research Ranch, an ungrazed grassland preserve in southeastern Arizona, soil seed banks were sampled in June, August, and October 2002 and June 2003. Wildfire had previously burned 90% of the research ranch in May 2002. Seed density and species richness in burned native grassland (2 plots) were compared to those in burned exotic grassland (2 plots). Averaged over 4 sample dates, seed densities were as follows: burned native grassland, 591 ± 243.1 seeds · m−2 and 784 ± 334.9 seeds · m−2; burned exotic grassland, 501 ± 198.9 seeds · m−2 and 196 …

Determinates Of Success In An Alc Classroom, April L. Berthiaume Jun 2007

Determinates Of Success In An Alc Classroom, April L. Berthiaume

Theses and Graduate Projects

Students who attend an Alternative Learning Center (ALC) do so for a variety of reasons- They may arrive due to a deficit in credit, teen parent status, at-risk of dropping out, or behavioral issues. Once at the ALC many students comment that they are more successful, than they were in their main public high school. This study is an effort to understand what factors take place in my classroom at the ALC that increases the level of success felt by the students. Through open ended interviewing ten students shared their experiences in my classroom regarding the practices that I, as …

The Value Of Marine Institutions: An Economic Survey Of Marine Research And Education Institutions In Monterey And Santa Cruz Counties, Judith T. Kildow Dr, Nathaniel Miller

Publications

It is recognized that ocean and coastal areas of the United States contribute significantly to our nation’s overall economy. What is not completely understood is the extent to and manner in which our economy benefits from the wide range of marine and coastal activities. One area of the ocean economy that has not been collectively measured or examined is the contribution of marine research and education institutions. The goal of the project was to create a prototype strategy at a local level for collecting data at a national level, in order to create an economic sector of these institutions and …

Analysis Of Time-Series Modis 250 M Vegetation Index Data For Crop Classification In The U.S. Central Great Plains, Brian D. Wardlow, Stephen L. Egbert, Jude H. Kastens Jun 2007

Analysis Of Time-Series Modis 250 M Vegetation Index Data For Crop Classification In The U.S. Central Great Plains, Brian D. Wardlow, Stephen L. Egbert, Jude H. Kastens

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

The global environmental change research community requires improved and up-to-date land use/land cover (LULC) datasets at regional to global scales to support a variety of science and policy applications. Considerable strides have been made to improve large-area LULC datasets, but little emphasis has been placed on thematically detailed crop mapping, despite the considerable influence of management activities in the cropland sector on various environmental processes and the economy. Time-series MODIS 250 m Vegetation Index (VI) datasets hold considerable promise for largearea crop mapping in an agriculturally intensive region such as the U.S. Central Great Plains, given their global coverage, intermediate …

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder In The Classroom: Practical Strategies For Teaching To Student Strengths, Lisa Kreutz Jun 2007

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder In The Classroom: Practical Strategies For Teaching To Student Strengths, Lisa Kreutz

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in the Classroom: Practical Strategies for Teaching to Student Strengths This project discusses the necessity of differentiated classroom instruction based on the educational and learning needs of students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Current estimates suggest that as many as 2 million school age students in the United States have been diagnosed with ADHD. A student with ADHD can be inattentive, hyperactive, and/or impulsive in his/her behaviors. With consideration for these behaviors and actions, this project identifies appropriate classroom instructional practices, which are based on the modifications and differentiation necessary for teaching students with ADHD. …

The Scope And Nature Of Panhandling And The Related Crime In Denver, Colorado, Megan A. Gall Jun 2007

The Scope And Nature Of Panhandling And The Related Crime In Denver, Colorado, Megan A. Gall

Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones

Nationally, increases in the number of panhandlers and homeless people are associated with social and economic issues and are the subject of public policy debate, sociological inquiry and public interest (DHPG 2003). Panhandlers and homeless people are collectively called transients for this research. In the 1950s, the deinstitutionalization of the mentally ill caused the first major influx of homelessness. Discrepancies between affordable housing and wages grew through the 1960s and 1970s and the problem did not gain national attention until the 1980s (DCEH n.d.). The increased attention is primarily due to the continued scarcity of housing, increasing discrepancies between housing …

Environmental Regulation And The Export Dynamics Of Energy Technologies, Francesco Crespi, Valeria Costantini Jun 2007

Environmental Regulation And The Export Dynamics Of Energy Technologies, Francesco Crespi, Valeria Costantini

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The pollution haven hypothesis affirms that an open market regime will encourage the flow of low technology polluting industries toward developing countries, due to potential comparative advantages related to low environmental standards. In contrast, the hypothesis suggested by Porter and van der Linde claims for a competitive dynamic behaviour by innovating firms, allowing a global diffusion of environmental-friendly technologies. Environmental regulation may represent a relevant mechanism through which technological change is induced. In this way countries subject to more stringent environmental regulations may become net exporters of environmental technologies. This paper provides new evidence on the evolution of export flows …
