Art Education In An Age Of Teletechnology: On The Impossibility Of Portraiture, Jan Jagodzinski Jan 2007

Art Education In An Age Of Teletechnology: On The Impossibility Of Portraiture, Jan Jagodzinski

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Art since the Renaissance has been obsessed with the portrait and defined by it as the form of representation made even more iconic through the invention of photography where the notion of the profile became established as a sign of prosperity, prestige and power (Sekula, 1986). This enlightenment tradition of portraiture is not likely to perish at any given future date; the digitalization of the image continues to make the banal snap-shot proliferate at such an incredible rate identifying the thirst for personal representation in contemporary society. The explosion of celebrity magazines, the spread of the paparazzi, and the easy …

Electronic Media And The Novice-Level Esl Textbook, Jacob Selz Brown Jan 2007

Electronic Media And The Novice-Level Esl Textbook, Jacob Selz Brown

Theses and Dissertations

The past decade had seen a re-evaluation in both foreign language, and English as a Second/Foreign Language, instruction methods due to the new technology available to aide in this instruction. While different institutions have access to different levels of technology, the adoption of basic technology for the classroom will eventually happen in the entire developed world. The purpose of this thesis is to wed the new technology available to a traditional textbook. It offers guided instruction to help a facilitator who may have never taught English as a Second/Foreign Language before, along with the actual electronic media needed to supplement …

Imposing A Cap On Capital Punishment, Adam M. Gershowitz Jan 2007

Imposing A Cap On Capital Punishment, Adam M. Gershowitz

Missouri Law Review

This Article argues that because prosecutors have discretion to seek the death penalty and too many cases, they lack the incentive to police themselves and choose carefully. Put simply, because there are too few legal constraints - and virtually no political constraints - on the sheer number of cases in which prosecutors can pursue the death penalty, the Government is not under sufficient pressure to limit its use of capital punishment to only the most heinous cases. As a result, two things happen. First, the death penalty is sought and meted out in some cases, which though terrible, are no …

Downscaling Daily Maximum And Minimum Air Temperature In The Midwestern Usa: A Hybrid Empirical Approach, Justin T. Schoof, S C. Pryor, S M. Robeson Jan 2007

Downscaling Daily Maximum And Minimum Air Temperature In The Midwestern Usa: A Hybrid Empirical Approach, Justin T. Schoof, S C. Pryor, S M. Robeson

Publications

A new hybrid empirical downscaling technique is presented and applied to assess 21st century projections of maximum and minimum daily surface air temperatures (Tmax, Tmin) over the Midwestern USA. Our approach uses multiple linear regression to downscale the seasonal variations of the mean and standard deviation of daily Tmax and Tmin and the lag-0 and lag-1 correlations between daily Tmax and Tmin based on GCM simulation of the large-scale climate. These downscaled parameters are then used as inputs to a stochastic weather generator to produce time series of the daily Tmax and Tmin at 26 surface stations, in three time …

Dynamically And Statistically Downscaled Seasonal Simulations Of Maximum Surface Air Temperature Over The Southeastern United States, Young-Kwon Lim, D W. Shin, Steven Cocke, T E. Larow, Justin T. Schoof, James J. O'Brien, Eric P. Chassignet Jan 2007

Dynamically And Statistically Downscaled Seasonal Simulations Of Maximum Surface Air Temperature Over The Southeastern United States, Young-Kwon Lim, D W. Shin, Steven Cocke, T E. Larow, Justin T. Schoof, James J. O'Brien, Eric P. Chassignet

Publications

Coarsely resolved surface air temperature (2 m height) seasonal integrations from the Florida State University/Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies Global Spectral Model (FSU/COAPS GSM) (~1.8º lon.-lat. (T63)) for the period of 1994 to 2002 (March through September each year) are downscaled to a fine spatial scale of ~20 km. Dynamical and statistical downscaling methods are applied for the southeastern United States region, covering Florida, Georgia, and Alabama. Dynamical downscaling is conducted by running the FSU/COAPS Nested Regional Spectral Model (NRSM), which is nested into the domain of the FSU/COAPS GSM. We additionally present a new statistical downscaling method. The rationale …

A Framework To Assess State Support Of Certified Organic Farming, Shauna M. Bloom, Leslie Duram Jan 2007

A Framework To Assess State Support Of Certified Organic Farming, Shauna M. Bloom, Leslie Duram

Publications

Support for organic farming varies from state to state, and there have been few attempts to document what types of support currently exists. This research assesses regionally specific and relevant support available to organic farmers at the state level. This exploratory study develops a framework of ten key categories of organic agricultural support: leadership, policy, research, technical support, financial support, marketing and promotion, education and information, consumer issues, inter-agency activities, and future developments. Data from state departments of agriculture, land grant universities, extension services, and other state-level agencies provide the basis for a numerical assessment of support in each category. …

The In-Between Places Where Children Are Socialized, Anne Dailey Jan 2007

The In-Between Places Where Children Are Socialized, Anne Dailey

Faculty Articles and Papers

In Between Home and School, Professor Rosenbury makes a splendid contribution to the emerging legal scholarship on the influence of cultural contexts on children's socialization. Scholars in this field have begun to study the effects on children of the media, peer relationships, civic institutions, and early caregiving environments. Professor Rosenbury's is a bold new voice in this genre offering a normative paradigm of space to replace the traditional dyadic model of state-parent authority over children. At the heart of the spatial paradigm is the view that in-between spaces socialize children in ways that differ both procedurally and substantively from the …

Ethical Codes And Cultural Context: Ensuring Legal Ethics In The Global Law Firm, Laurence Etherington, Robert Lee Jan 2007

Ethical Codes And Cultural Context: Ensuring Legal Ethics In The Global Law Firm, Laurence Etherington, Robert Lee

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

There are doubtless many practical and professional problems that arise in the global legal practice, but this paper suggests that not least of these are issues of legal ethics, in part generated by the global context and not easily amenable to resolution by reference to any single code within the "home" or "host" jurisdiction. For example, there may be difficulties in isolating precisely what those ethical obligations might comprise. These obligations might be rooted in the requirements of local law, but they might arise equally from the values and expectations of the client, or from other lawyers whether inside or …

Local Matters: Internationalizing Strategies For U.S. Law Firms, Carole Silver Jan 2007

Local Matters: Internationalizing Strategies For U.S. Law Firms, Carole Silver

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

The local nature of legal systems reduces the harmonizing impact that globalization has generated in other sectors of the economy. Despite the continuing importance of local differences and institutions, the world in which law and lawyers operate is increasingly connected, and national borders are receding as barriers to commerce. Lawyers and their firms must respond to the forces of globalization both as organizations and in connection with the services they provide. This article addresses the ways in which they are doing so by examining what it means for a law firm to be both a global and a U.S. firm. …

I Can See Clearly Now: Videoconference Hearings And The Legal Limit On How Tribunals Allocate Resources, Lorne Sossin, Zimra Yetnikoff

Articles & Book Chapters

Videoconferencing has generated ambivalence in the legal community. Some have heralded its promise of unprecedented access to justice, expecialy for geographicaly remote communities. Others, however, have questioned whether videoconferencing undermines fairness. The authors explore the impl'cations of videoconferencing through the case study of the Ontario Landlord and Tenant Tribunal, which is one of the busiest adjudicative bodies in Canada. This anaysis hig hghts concerns both with videoconferendng in princp4 and in practice. While such concerns traditionally have been the province of public administration, the authors argue that a tribunals allocation of resources and the suffidengy of its budget are also …

Reducing The Social Exclusion Of Girls, Kelly Hallman, Eva Roca Jan 2007

Reducing The Social Exclusion Of Girls, Kelly Hallman, Eva Roca

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Across the globe, girls are systematically excluded from participation in social, economic, and political life. The absence of girls in these arenas has implications not only for the young women themselves but also for society as a whole, exacerbating poverty and perpetuating disparities in health, education, and economic achievement. Internationally, this marginalization makes it difficult or impossible for some countries to achieve society-wide goals, such as the Millennium Development Goals identified by the United Nations as benchmarks to reduce poverty. For a number of years, the Population Council has been studying the causes and effects of girls’ social exclusion in …

Poverty And Fertility: Evidence And Agenda, Sajeda Amin, John B. Casterline, Laura Spess Jan 2007

Poverty And Fertility: Evidence And Agenda, Sajeda Amin, John B. Casterline, Laura Spess

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This paper explores how poverty affects childbearing patterns in the contemporary developing world. In considering the association between poverty and fertility, we explore one measure of economic status, household asset holdings, in Demographic and Health Surveys conducted in 51 countries since 1990. The results show that the association between poverty and fertility differs according to the measure of fertility considered. We conclude there is much to be gained from distinguishing between the impact of poverty on fertility aspirations and the implementation of those aspirations.

Cryptic Speciation In Two Widespread Subterranean Amphipod Genera Reflects Historical Drainage Patterns In An Ancient Landscape, Stefan Eberhard, Stuart A. Halse, William F. Humphreys

KIP Abstracts

The landscape of the Pilbara region of Western Australia has been relatively unchanged for 100 million years. The ancient river systems of this region might be expected to be sources of isolation and divergence for aquatic species. Hence, the occurrence of widespread groundwater taxa in this landscape offers the opportunity to examine associations between genetic diversity and drainage patterns. Pilbarus and Chydaekata are two widespread genera of subterranean amphipods endemic to the Pilbara, each occupying multiple tributaries. We used molecular data to examine the roles of drainage patterns in structuring genetic diversity. Gene flow within a tributary may be facilitated …

Appropriate Constructiontechnology For Residence Inchao Phraya River Estuary :A Case Study Of Sakla Village, Songkiat Teartisup

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

Construction technology from the West plays an important role in building constructionin Thailand, especially in the last 50 years. Major cities can absorb this latest technologyfaster and greater than any other city due to personnel, organization and capital. Thus theconstruction of small or large buildings using brand new technology have been constructedextravagantly and carelessly. Moreover, this trend also extends to other regions of the countrywhich lead to the neglect of folk wisdom. The wisdom of local construction has been substitutedby new technology without concern for the geography of the area. In 1996, however, theeconomic crisis caused construction business to come …

Walk Along My Mind: Space, Mobility, And The Significance Of Place, Jill M. Fraley Jan 2007

Walk Along My Mind: Space, Mobility, And The Significance Of Place, Jill M. Fraley

Scholarly Articles

In America mobility is seen as a measure of success, especially for persons born in rural areas, who are assumed to want to “move on up” as soon as possible. This pressure toward both social and spatial mobility is especially strong when the birthplace is an oppressed region such as Appalachia. Ironically, while the rest of the world has disowned Appalachia, the residents of the mountains have repeatedly proclaimed the significance of cultural investment in land. This article approaches the concept of place, illuminating several variations on the theme, while particularly illustrating the strength of place claimed by Appalachia.
