A Dendroclimatic Record Of Paleoclimate Of The Last 10,000 Years, Glacier Bay National Park And Preserve: Progress Understanding Climate Change In Southeast Alaska, Daniel Lawson, Greg Wiles, David Finnegan

United States Army: Publications

Our investigations in 2007 focused on continuing collection and analyses of tree rings from living trees and building a long ring-width series from interstadial wood. These interstadial forests were extensive and their preservation, although discontinuous and fragmented, is remarkable. In situ stumps, still rooted in growth position, and logs held within sediments remain from forests that existed at various times between glaciations over approximately the last 10,000 years.
We have analyzed previous and new collections of ring-width tree-ring series, including a multiple species collection from near Excursion Ridge in the southeast portion of the Park. These tree-ring series have a …

Media (Literacy) Education In The United States, Guo-Ming Chen

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Previous research on conversational sensitivity and listening styles has shown inconsistent results on the relationship between the two concepts. This study is designed to continue the line of research by further examining the relationship of the two concepts and between the dimensions. Two hundred and seventy students in the basic courses of Communication and Psychology participate in this study. The results indicate that significantly positive and negative relationships exist among the dimensions of the two concepts. Gender differences on the two concepts are also tested. Limitations and directions for future research are as well discussed.

The Language Of Science: Vocabulary Insturction In The Inclusion Classroom, Tamara Iwasiw Jan 2007

The Language Of Science: Vocabulary Insturction In The Inclusion Classroom, Tamara Iwasiw

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

Vocabulary is found in all areas of academic study. How the vocabulary is approached with regards to instruction varies widely. Through a review of the literature, multiple strategies have been outlined for use in the classroom. Some of these strategies were employed into action research using the Japanese lesson study model to determine the appropriate method for vocabulary instruction in a particular inner city high school science inclusion classroom. The results of the study were in correlation with the review of the literature where student achievement was impacted by the addition of vocabulary instruction to the regular class curriculum. Student …

Implementation Of Technology To Enhance Middle School Student Understanding Of Quadratic Relationships, Daniel R. List Jr.

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

In order to ascertain whether timing and placement of technology within a mathematics unit had any effect on student thinking and understanding, two sets of students were observed during a unit on quadratic relationships. The first group was given instruction in a traditional foundation of quadratics and subsequently incorporated the use of graphing calculators into their knowledge base. The second group learned how to use the calculators for exploring quadratics first and then was taught the theoretical foundation to solidify understanding. It was found that the timing and placement of the introduction of graphing calculators into the unit did impact …

Immigration And Support For Anti-Immigrant Parties In Costa Rica, Adrielle L. Churchill Jan 2007

Immigration And Support For Anti-Immigrant Parties In Costa Rica, Adrielle L. Churchill

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

The central research question of this work is whether large or growing immigration populations cause a rise in support for political parties espousing anti-immigration positions. Virtually all of the research on this topic has been focused on the United States and Western Europe. This study, by contrast, looks at the impact of Nicaraguan immigration into neighboring Costa Rica on support for anti-immigration parties in that country. Existing research has found links between such support and immigration levels, as well as other variables such as education, unemployment and ethnic diversity. After reviewing the literature, I generate a series of hypotheses based …

Bound Between And Beyond The Borderlands: Region, Race, Scale And A Subnational Legal History, Tom I. Romero Jan 2007

Bound Between And Beyond The Borderlands: Region, Race, Scale And A Subnational Legal History, Tom I. Romero

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

This essay untangles the relationship between region, race, and scale in surfacing the legal past resulting from interactions between variant cultures in the history of the American West. While the analysis is necessarily informed by geographic, jurisdictional, and even scholarly scales, the scale I'm most concerned with exists at the level of the individual and the group. In this regard, this essay is centrally rooted in surfacing the legal history of subaltern cosmopolitan legalities in a global colonial and post-colonial world. Precisely because "subaltern cosmopolitan legality operates by definition across scales," the concept highlights the variety of ways in which …

Mefloquine Treatment For Uncomplicated Falciparum Malaria In Young Children 6–24 Months Of Age In Northern Ghana, David J. Fryauff, Seth Owusu-Agyel, Gregory Utz, J. Kevin Baird, Kwadwo A. Koram, Fred Binka, Francis Nkrumah, Stephen L. Hoffman Jan 2007

Mefloquine Treatment For Uncomplicated Falciparum Malaria In Young Children 6–24 Months Of Age In Northern Ghana, David J. Fryauff, Seth Owusu-Agyel, Gregory Utz, J. Kevin Baird, Kwadwo A. Koram, Fred Binka, Francis Nkrumah, Stephen L. Hoffman

United States Public Health Resources

Mefloquine (MQ) single dose 20 mg/kg treatment of falciparum malaria was evaluated in 186 children of 6–24 months of age in northern Ghana. There were 15 RII/RIII-type parasitologic failures, all with Day 2 MQ blood levels significantly lower than children whose parasitemias cleared before Day 7 and remained clear through 28 days. Predictors of RII/RIII parasitologic response were vomiting after MQ dosing, Day 2 MQ levels < 500 ng/mL, and undetectable Day 2 levels of the carboxymefloquine metabolite. There were 50 cases of delayed RI parasitologic failure, but 71% of these cases had undetectable Day 28 blood levels of MQ and drug levels in the remaining 29% ranged below the 620 ng/mL level that suppresses MQ sensitive strains of P. falciparum. Drug levels among infants that tolerated MQ well were not associated with age, weight, hemoglobin, parasitemia, and pre-existing symptoms of vomiting or diarrhea. An observed recurrent parasitemia of 34,400 trophozoites/L against a MQ blood concentration of 550 ng/mL was taken as indication of tolerance to suppressive levels of the drug at this location.

Thinking With Wolves: Left Legal Theory After The Right's Rise (Review Essay), Martha T. Mccluskey Jan 2007

Thinking With Wolves: Left Legal Theory After The Right's Rise (Review Essay), Martha T. Mccluskey

Book Reviews

Reviewing Wendy Brown & Janet Halley, Left Legalism/Left Critique (2001).

Left legal theory is in crisis. This crisis reflects a broader problem of contemporary U.S. politics: the lack of grand ideas capable of mobilizing meaningful opposition to the triumph of the political right. Right-wing legal theory has contributed to that dramatic political change by promoting ideas questioning the foundations of the twentieth century liberal welfare and regulatory state.

This review essay analyzes a rare recent attempt to revive left legal theory in the face of the right's triumph: the anthology Left Legalism/Left Critique edited by Wendy Brown and Janet Halley …
