Religious Pluralism In Mauritius And Turkey, Morgan J. O'Brien Iii
Religious Pluralism In Mauritius And Turkey, Morgan J. O'Brien Iii
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the treatment and facilitation of religious pluralism in Mauritius and Turkey. The thesis utilizes a most-different comparative case study, and argues for the existence of a tipping point that ultimately compels the elected leadership to act. The two states were chosen as most different cases due to their marked difference in religious diversity within each state, as Turkey is almost universally Muslim and Mauritius is very diverse, with large percentages of Christian, Muslim and Buddhist followers on the island state.

Emergence Of Mechanical Accounting In The U.S., 1880-1930, Charles W. Wooton, Barbara E. Kemmerer
Emergence Of Mechanical Accounting In The U.S., 1880-1930, Charles W. Wooton, Barbara E. Kemmerer
Accounting Historians Journal
For centuries, accounting was a manual process. Starting in the late 1800s, a series of technological innovations emerged that not only changed the way the accounting process was conducted but dramatically changed the workplace, the workforce, the information provided, and the accounting profession itself. By 1930, most major US companies had adopted mechanical accounting as a more efficient way of processing accounting information. This paper examines the historical development and influence of mechanical accounting in the U.S. from 1880 to 1930.

Geography And Ideology Of Accounting: A Case Study Of Domination And Accounting In A Sugar Refinery In Australasia, 1900-1920, Jill J. Hooks, Ross E. Stewart
Geography And Ideology Of Accounting: A Case Study Of Domination And Accounting In A Sugar Refinery In Australasia, 1900-1920, Jill J. Hooks, Ross E. Stewart
Accounting Historians Journal
This historical case study examines accounting in a sugar refinery from 1900 to 1920 in two arenas of operation. The geography of accounting enabled the workers at Chelsea to have their working experience sequestered by the company. Accounting routinized their work at the refinery, enabling their labor to become monitored, empty of meaning, and, at times, overwhelming. The ideology of accounting provided the company with an instrument of evasion to silence the voice of labor and an instrument of self-deception designed to justify and insulate the authoritarian hierarchy of the company and the power of its Australian general manager, Edward …

The Impact Of Feng Shui On Chinese Communication, Guo-Ming Chen
The Impact Of Feng Shui On Chinese Communication, Guo-Ming Chen
Communication Studies Faculty Publications
Feng shui, the art of space arrangement, has made a great impact on Chinese society. It reflects and shapes most of the traditional Chinese cultural values. Because feng shui continues to play an important role in the contemporary Chinese world, it is important for scholars in different disciplines to systematically study feng shui in order to better understand the Chinese way of thinking and behavior. The goal of this article is threefold: (1) to delineate the meaning of feng shui, (2) to examine the philosophical and cultural bases of feng shui, and (3) to analyze its impact …

No. 45: Medical Recruits: The Temptation Of South African Health Care Professionals, Christian M. Rogerson
Southern African Migration Programme
Health workers are one of the categories of skilled professionals most affected by globalization. Over the past decade, there has emerged a substantial body of research that tracks patterns of international migration of health personnel, assesses causes and consequences, and debates policy responses at global and national scales. Within this literature, the case of South Africa is attracting growing interest. For almost 15 years South Africa has been the target of a ‘global raiding’ of skilled professionals by several developed countries. How to deal with the consequences of the resultant outflow of health professionals is a core policy issue for …

Examining Ethical Development And Training: Implications For Sarbanes Oxley, Donna Galla
Examining Ethical Development And Training: Implications For Sarbanes Oxley, Donna Galla
Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)
The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX) is the legislative solution to the recent ethical scandals, such as Enron, ImClone, Adelphia, Tyco, Qwest, Global Crossing, and WorldCom, involving financial and accounting irregularities and fraud. This Act implements extensive changes to public accounting and corporate laws, and expands corporate governance extending the responsibilities of senior executives and board members to include responsibility for a company-wide ethics program. Because of the complexity of ethical behavior, this paper explores values formation and support for ethics training. This study looks to ascertain whether moral maturity is related to age more than it is to training, …

Strokes Of Existence: The Connection Of All Things, Mari Gorman
Graduate Student Publications and Research
Acted or real—and all life is real whether one is acting or not—the common denominator and consistent, ubiquitous reality of life and all behavior is that it manifests in the form of relationships on all scales. But what is a relationship? Until now, the answer to this question has not been sufficiently known. As a result of many years of empirical research that began with the aim of discovering what is going on in a gifted actor when s/he is playing a character that can be observed and experienced as a living, intuitive being, and based on the knowledge that …
Loess Deposits, Origins And Properties, Daniel R. Muhs
Loess Deposits, Origins And Properties, Daniel R. Muhs
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Loess is an eolian (windblown) sediment that is an important archive of Quaternary climate changes. It may provide one of the most complete terrestrial records of interglacial–glacial cycles. Loess is unusual as a record of Quaternary climate change because it is one of the few sediments that is deposited directly from the atmosphere. Thus, it is a geologic deposit that contains a record of atmospheric circulation and can be used to reconstruct synoptic-scale paleoclimatology. Loess is also unusual in that it can be dated directly using ‘trapped electron’ or luminescence methods that require only the sediment itself. Commonly, loess deposits …
Personalization Efforts And The Relationship To School Climate In Select Michigan High Schools, Karl A. Pilar
Personalization Efforts And The Relationship To School Climate In Select Michigan High Schools, Karl A. Pilar
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The American high school is on the verge of a reform movement like that seen in American middle schools throughout the early and mid-1990s. In 1996 the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) released its recommendations for reform in the study Breaking Ranks: Changing an American Institution. Among these are recommendations that call for high schools to become smaller, less bureaucratic, and more responsive to student needs, where students feel a sense of belonging. Hoy and Miskel (2001) defined school climate as a “relatively enduring quality of the school’s environment that is experienced by participants, affects their behavior, is …
Estimating Land-Use Change Impacts On Direct Runoff And Non-Point Source Pollutant Loads In The Richland Creek Basin (Illinois, Usa) By Applying The L-Thia Model
Journal of Spatial Hydrology
An export coefficient approach to hydrological and non-point source (NPS) pollution modeling enables quick and simple assessment of long-term impacts for planning purposes. An export coefficient and geographic information system based L-THIA (Long-Term Hydrologic Impact Assessment) model was applied to the Richland Creek basin (Illinois, USA) to assess the impacts of future urban growth on direct runoff, NPS total nitrogen (TN), total suspended particles (TSP), and total phosphorous (TP) loads. The model predicted that mean annual direct runoff and TSP loading would increase by around 7% and 4% respectively by 2030 with moderate and rapid urban growth simulated by a …
Spatial Variability And Prediction Modeling Of Groundwater Arsenic Distributions In The Shallowest Alluvial Aquifers In Bangladesh
Journal of Spatial Hydrology
Elevated arsenic in groundwater is the greatest environmental problem in Bangladesh. Spatial variability of arsenic in groundwater has been examined by semivariogram analysis that revealed high degree of small-scale spatial variability in alluvial aquifers. Small-scale variability of arsenic concentrations, indicated by high “nugget” values in semivariograms, is associated with heterogeneity in local-scale geology and geochemical processes. In unsampled locations, arsenic concentrations have been predicted using both deterministic and stochastic prediction methods. Natural neighbor (NN) method predicted better than inverse distance to power (IDP) method, and small-scale variations of arsenic concentrations are preserved. Ordinary kriging (OK) method on the untransformed arsenic …

Equilibrium Entrainment Of Fine Sediment Over A Coarse Immobile Bed, P. E. Grams, Peter Wilcock
Equilibrium Entrainment Of Fine Sediment Over A Coarse Immobile Bed, P. E. Grams, Peter Wilcock
Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications
The transported load in most fluvial systems, including gravel-bedded rivers, includes fine-grained sediment. Models for suspended sediment transport have focused on sand-covered beds, rendering incomplete the theoretical and empirical framework for predicting fine sediment transport and routing. We conducted laboratory experiments involving sand transport over large immobile grains. The experiments were scaled such that immobile particles were much larger than the mobile sediment, but less than 10% of flow depth, and that bed shear stresses, scaled by the size of the mobile sediment, were indicative of transport in suspension. The experiments were conducted in equilibrium transport and included measurements of …
Rules Of Interchange: Privacy In Online Social Communities– A Rhetorical Critique Of Myspace.Com, Adam W. Tyma
Rules Of Interchange: Privacy In Online Social Communities– A Rhetorical Critique Of Myspace.Com, Adam W. Tyma
Communication Faculty Publications
As online social communities (e.g. MySpace, Facebook) grow in popularity and become commonplace, these same communities also become sites of information exchange through various communication channels (eg. text, visual, aural). With these exchanges occurring either individually or collectively, sets of questions arise regarding the community, the value of information within that community, and how/what/why they choose to communicate what they do within such a space. By applying Sandra Petronio’s Communication Privacy Management theory and Michel Foucault’s discussion of the Panopticon, a rhetorical critique of user decisions regarding private information within Myspace.Com can be conducted. The knowledge uncovered adds insight into …

Additions Toward A Thorough Understanding Of The International Foundations Of Andragogy In Hrd & Adult Education, John Henschke, Mary Cooper
Adult Education Faculty Works
More than 225 major works published in English from national and international sources on andragogy are presented here, in order to provide a clear and understandable, international foundation for the linkage between the research, theory and practice of andragogy and its application to Adult Education and Human Resource Development. Six themes have emerged that provide a foundation for the linkage. The evolution of the term: historical antecedents shaping the concept; comparison of American and European understanding; popularizing and sustaining the American and world-wide concept; practical applications; and theory, research, and definition.
The Supreme Court's Legal Culture War Against Tribal Law, Matthew L.M. Fletcher
The Supreme Court's Legal Culture War Against Tribal Law, Matthew L.M. Fletcher
Intercultural Human Rights Law Review
Indian tribes have long governed themselves in a manner that developed far different than the Anglo-American legal system. Many indigenous cultures relied upon an oral tradition, inextricably intertwined with their languages, to make the ways of their people known. In these cultures, social mores tied to the geographies of traditional territories developed to ensure a form of law and order, and social control existed sufficient to maintain the societies. Many indigenous cultures had written laws as well. These rules survived after contact with the European nations and survive today in modified form. As indigenous societies reacted, changed, and sometimes all …

A Reflective Practitioner As A Leader Of Learning, Change And Service : A Reflective Essay, Leshane O. Saddler

Learning must be modeled by all leaders. Learning may not be enough; there must be a love for learning that is modeled to all. As a parent of two elementary students my passion for knowledge is demonstrated on a daily basis. Reading nightly for one to two hours and spending Saturdays at the public library instead of the ball park are two examples that I model for my children. As a leader of learning, the building principal or district administrator, there should be a greater understanding that the teachers that are under your administration; view you as that parent.
