Reach-Averaged Sediment Routing Model Of A Canyon River, S. M. Wiele, Peter Wilcock, P. E. Grams Jan 2007

Reach-Averaged Sediment Routing Model Of A Canyon River, S. M. Wiele, Peter Wilcock, P. E. Grams

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Spatial complexity in channel geometry indicates that accurate prediction of sediment transport requires modeling in at least two dimensions. However, a one-dimensional model may be the only practical or possible alternative, especially for longer river reaches of practical concern in river management or landscape modeling. We have developed a one-dimensional model of the Colorado River through upper Grand Canyon that addresses this problem by reach averaging the channel properties and predicting changes in sand storage using separate source and sink functions coupled to the sand routing model. The model incorporates results from the application of a two-dimensional model of flow, …

Geochronology Of Salt-Marsh Sediments, William Alderman Marshall Jan 2007

Geochronology Of Salt-Marsh Sediments, William Alderman Marshall

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Salt-marsh sediments can provide important achives of past sea levels if they can be securely dated. This thesis investigates eight methods for dating salt-marsh sediments. These include traditional and established dating methods (¹⁴C dating and the radionuclides ¹³⁷Cs and ²¹ºPb) and more novel approaches to dating the deposition of salt-marsh sediments (palaeomagnetic dating, the use of' atmospheric stable lead deposition, tephra chronologies, pollen markers, SCP analysis and the use of atmospheric ¹⁴C 'bomb spike' and high-precision AMS ¹⁴C measurements). Sites were selected to provide contrasting sediment sequences that differed both in lithology and accumulation rates and included salt marshes from …

Bringing The Visual Arts Classroom Into The 21st Century, Anna Gianakos

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Bringing the visual arts classroom into the 21st century technology has become a key component to everyday life and society, especially in education. Although teachers are faced with many barriers that can hinder the integration of technology into the classroom, such as cost/funding, teacher training, and teacher planning time, with some support and planning, teachers will begin to see and use technology as a invaluable resource and tool in the classroom. The purpose of this project was to provide visual arts teachers with the information, background, and tools to begin their journey of integrating technology into the visual arts classroom. …

Webs Of Power: Multiple Ownership In Tourism Destinations, Ziene Mottiar, Hazel Tucker Jan 2007

Webs Of Power: Multiple Ownership In Tourism Destinations, Ziene Mottiar, Hazel Tucker

Articles

It has been widely noted in the tourism small business literature that collaboration between groups of businesses operating within clusters contributes both to business development and the success of destinations and regions. This paper aims to contribute to the research on tourism destination networks by focusing on multiple ownership, or portfolio entrepreneurship, when more than one small or micro business within a specific destination are owned by the same entrepreneur. Courtown, in Ireland and Göreme in Turkey are presented as two case studies in which the existence of multiple owners was identified. The implications of multiple ownership on tourism operation …

The Venom Gland Transcriptome Of The Desert Massasauga Rattlesnake (Sistrurus Catenatus Edwardsii): Towards An Understanding Of Venom Composition Among Advanced Snakes (Superfamily Colubroidea), Susanta Pahari, Stephen P. Mackessy, R. Manjunatha Kini Jan 2007

The Venom Gland Transcriptome Of The Desert Massasauga Rattlesnake (Sistrurus Catenatus Edwardsii): Towards An Understanding Of Venom Composition Among Advanced Snakes (Superfamily Colubroidea), Susanta Pahari, Stephen P. Mackessy, R. Manjunatha Kini

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Snake venoms are complex mixtures of pharmacologically active proteins and peptides which belong to a small number of superfamilies. Global cataloguing of the venom transcriptome facilitates the identification of new families of toxins as well as helps in understanding the evolution of venom proteomes.

RESULTS: We have constructed a cDNA library of the venom gland of a threatened rattlesnake (a pitviper), Sistrurus catenatus edwardsii (Desert Massasauga), and sequenced 576 ESTs. Our results demonstrate a high abundance of serine proteinase and metalloproteinase transcripts, indicating that the disruption of hemostasis is a principle mechanism of action of the venom. In addition …

Lifestyle Entrepreneurs And Spheres Of Inter-Firm Relations: The Case Of Westport Co. Mayo, Ireland, Ziene Mottiar Jan 2007

Lifestyle Entrepreneurs And Spheres Of Inter-Firm Relations: The Case Of Westport Co. Mayo, Ireland, Ziene Mottiar

Articles

A relatively small body of literature in tourism which concentrates on the issues of small firms and entrepreneurs and ‘this area of inquiry is vastly under-researched’ (Thomas, 2004, p.1). A key piece of research (Rimmington et al, 1999) classifies entrepreneurs in the tourism sector and one category which has received research attention has been that of lifestyle entrepreneurs. This article outlines the literature on lifestyle entrepreneurs and concludes that much of the focus to date has been on the individual entrepreneur. This current paper investigates how lifestyle entrepreneurs interact with other entrepreneurs in the destination in which they operate, and …

The Cynipoid Genus Paramblynotus: Revision, Phylogeny, And Historical Biogeography (Hymenoptera, Liopteridae), Zhiwei Liu, Fredrik Ronquist, Goeran Nordlander Jan 2007

The Cynipoid Genus Paramblynotus: Revision, Phylogeny, And Historical Biogeography (Hymenoptera, Liopteridae), Zhiwei Liu, Fredrik Ronquist, Goeran Nordlander

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

The genus Paramblynotus is the most species-rich genus of the so-called macrocynipoids, the large cynipoid parasitoids of wood-boring and cone-boring insect larvae. The species range in size from some of the largest to the smallest macrocynipoids, comparable in size to microcynipoids. Paramblynotus members occur on all continents except Europe and Australia, with most species being tropical or subtropical. The biology is poorly known but a few observations indicate that the species are parasitoids of beetle larvae. In this monographic revision of the genus, we present a species-level cladistic analysis based on qualitative and quantitative features of the external morphology. For …

Incorporating Art Into Education : The Importance Of Teaching Creatively In A Standards Based Classroom, Monica Petersen Jan 2007

Incorporating Art Into Education : The Importance Of Teaching Creatively In A Standards Based Classroom, Monica Petersen

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Art education is an important aspect of overall learning and schools are failing to provide adequate art education programs for students. Eighty-nine percent of Americans believe that art education is important enough to be taught in schools, and still, art education is being allowed to slip out the backdoor without anyone asking why (National Arts Education, 2007). If teachers could incorporate art into the current curriculum, students would benefit and art could be used as a valuable teaching tool. An art resource packet was created for teachers in response to the interviews conducted. The resource packet contains information on how …

Organizations As Place Builders, David F. Thomas, Jennifer E. Cross Jan 2007

Organizations As Place Builders, David F. Thomas, Jennifer E. Cross

Management Faculty Publications

We argue that the role of organizations as agents in the construction of place has been overlooked in the management and organizations literature. Using concepts from sociology, cultural geography, and management, we develop a typology that illustrates how organizations contribute to the social construction of place. This typology presents an analytic scheme for examining the place-building characteristics of organizations and a basis for developing theories on the interdependence between places and organizations.

To A Point, Joseph P. Tomain Jan 2007

To A Point, Joseph P. Tomain

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

For over a century, the United States has operated under a consistent energy policy that has served the country well. Our Traditional Energy policy is based on three economic assumptions: private capital and markets create wealth and stimulate innovation; there is a direct and positive correlation between energy production and economic productivity; and economies of scale will enable us to produce more energy at lower cost. Events over the last four decades, however, have given cause to question that Traditional Energy policy. The damage from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita helped focus that questioning. Increasingly over that period, national and international …
