Surface And Subsurface Fault And Fracture Systems With Associated Natural Gas Production In The Lower Mississippian And Upper Devonian, Price Formation, Southern West Virginia, S. Reed Johnson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Production from natural gas deposits is often enhanced by fault and fracture systems associated with reservoirs. This study presents analyses of fault and fracture systems within the Mississippian Price Formation in Southern West Virginia using subsurface well data and fracture data from surface analogs. The Price was analyzed at outcrops near the Allegheny Structural Front and in the Allegheny Plateau. Subsurface data analyses included mapping and modeling of the Price, fault delineation, cross section construction, and fractured zone identification. Production data was used to assess the potential for fractures and faults to enhance gas production. Fracture densities from outcrop were …

Petrologic Study Of The Murrysville Sandstone In Southwestern Pennsylvania, Melissa L. Sager May 2007

Petrologic Study Of The Murrysville Sandstone In Southwestern Pennsylvania, Melissa L. Sager

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Pennsylvania's Murrysville sandstone has been a proven gas producer since 1859 and a gas storage field since 1951. Using 49 side-wall cores from a gas well drilled in Westmoreland County, depositional environment and diagenesis are examined. In thin section, 5 microfacies are recognized. The lower two-thirds of the Murrysville is equivalent to the Cussewago of northwestern Pennsylvania and is interpreted as fluvial deltaic. The upper third is equivalent to the Berea of Ohio and is interpreted as being a marine transitional stream deposit.;Compaction was not extensive due to low amounts of ductile grains, rigid grain stability and matrix occupying space …

Indian Warfare, Household Competency, And The Settlement Of The Western Virginia Frontier, 1749 To 1794, John M. Boback May 2007

Indian Warfare, Household Competency, And The Settlement Of The Western Virginia Frontier, 1749 To 1794, John M. Boback

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The thesis of this dissertation is that Indian-related violence and warfare had a profound influence on the duration and nature of the frontier experience of those men and women who settled in the western Virginia backcountry between 1749 and 1794. Recurrent attacks by Shawnees, Delawares, Mingos, and Indians from the Great Lakes region caused such widespread death, destruction, and depopulation that it effectively prolonged the period of austere and difficult living conditions for over forty years. This conclusion contradicts the assertions of some recent scholars who have argued that crude living conditions lasted for only a year or two on …

Resisting Agricultural Assimilation: The Political Ecology Of Hmong Growers In The Twin Cities Metropolitan Region, Laura M. Kerr

Geography Honors Projects

Over one and a half million Hmong refugees have arrived in the United States since the end of the “Secret War” in 1974. The Saint Paul and Minneapolis metropolitan area is home to the largest urban population of Hmong immigrants in the United States. A significant number of Hmong refugees living in the Twin Cities metropolitan area have chosen farming as both a primary and supplemental source of income. While living in the metro area many Hmong rent land in peri-urban areas to farm and subsequently sell at local markets. Employing a cultural and political ecology framework, this research critically …

Ethnic identity affected urban planning and architecture to varying degrees across the Soviet Union. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the landscapes of cities located within its former boundaries have undergone dramatic change. In some cases these changes have been heavily influenced by the surge of ethnic identity and nationalism prevalent across the former Soviet bloc. This project specifically looks at the roles ethnicity and nationalism have had in determining the development of the Soviet and Post-Soviet urban landscapes in Tallinn, Estonia and Kazan, Russia.

Application And Refinement Of The Karst Disturbance Index In West Central, Florida, Leslie A. North

KIP Theses and Dissertations

A hierarchical and standardized environmental disturbance index, specifically designed for karst landscapes, was created by van Beynen and Townsend (2005). To assess the applicability of the index and provide recommendations for its refinement, the index was applied in four west-central Florida counties and interviews were conducted with local and state officials, community planners, and land resource managers. The karst disturbance index consists of 30 indicators contained within five broad categories: geomorphology, hydrology, atmosphere, biota, and culture. Data was readily available for most environmental indicators used to construct the index. Overall, levels of disturbance vary between the counties due to the …
