Differences In Bark Beetle (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Community Composition Within Cecropia Obtusifolia (Cecropiaceae) Petioles In Two Habitats In Monteverde, Costa Rica, December 2007, Amy Strauss
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Cecropia obtusifolia trees shed leaves daily throughout the year, regularly dropping large, woody leaf petioles. These petioles serve as the perfect habitat for Scolytine bark beetles, which burrow in, lay their eggs, and feed on the moist, fibrous pith of the petiole (Wood 1983). Cecropia spp. are known to thrive in fragmented, edge habitats altered by human land use transformation (Bello et al 1996) but success rates of associated fauna, including Azteca spp. ants, scale insects and Scolytine beetles, are less understood. This study examined the bark beetle community composition, morphospecies richness, and abundance inside C. obtusifolia petioles. It also …

Charting The New Territory Of Adaptive Co-Management: A Delphi Study, Ryan Plummer, Derek Armitage
Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications
Complex systems understanding implies a world characterized by dynamic, nonlinear interactions, discontinuities, and surprises. Such conditions are not amenable to conventional resource management approaches that stress command-and-control, and therefore, novel governance approaches are more suited to complexity and uncertainty are required. Adaptive co-management has emerged as an interdisciplinary response to this need, and blends the adaptive management and collaborative management narratives. However, concepts associated with adaptive co-management are relatively new and quickly expanding from multiple perspectives. The objective of this paper is to take stock of this relatively recent concept and synthesize current thinking in terms of: (1) the core …
Healing Gardens For Assisted Living: An Interdisciplinary Approach To Health Education, Claudia C. Collins, Angela M. O’Callaghan
Healing Gardens For Assisted Living: An Interdisciplinary Approach To Health Education, Claudia C. Collins, Angela M. O’Callaghan
Journal of Extension
There is a serious lack of health promotion programs for seniors transitioning from living in their own homes to assisted living. Research has demonstrated that horticulture and gardening can benefit people who are institutionalized. Aging and horticulture specialists at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension collaborated to create a healing garden project at Nevada's first low-income assisted living facility in Las Vegas. The goal was to enhance residents' quality-of life through a less traditional educational process. This process expands the scope and reach of Extension programs to a much larger and more diverse audience.

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This paper presents an analysis of systems thinking interventions in educational settings. Although these interventions have been implemented in K-12 classrooms since the mid 1980s, there is still no clear definition of systems thinking or identification of the best method to test the effectiveness of interventions or methods for teaching systems thinking The goal of this paper is to answer the question: how do we assess the effectiveness of systems thinking interventions in education? In order to answer this question, I had to address the following sub questions: (1) what is systems thinking, (2) what systems thinking interventions are being …

Microfluidic Electro-Osmotic Flow Pumps, John Mason Edwards
Microfluidic Electro-Osmotic Flow Pumps, John Mason Edwards
Theses and Dissertations
The need for miniaturized, portable devices to separate and detect unknown compounds has greatly multiplied, leading to an increased interest in microfluidics. Total integration of the detector and pump are necessary to decrease the overall size of the microfluidic device. Using previously developed thin film technologies, an electroosmotic flow (EOF) pump was incorporated in a microfluidic liquid chromatography device. An EOF pump was chosen because of its simple design and small size. EOF pumps fabricated on silicon and glass substrates were evaluated. The experimental flow rates were 0.19-2.30 microliters/minute for 40-400 V. The theoretical pump efficiency was calculated along with …
