Critical Analysis Of Problems Encountered In Incorporating Indigenous Knowledge In Science Teaching By Primary School Teachers In Zimbabwe, Edward Shizha Oct 2007

Critical Analysis Of Problems Encountered In Incorporating Indigenous Knowledge In Science Teaching By Primary School Teachers In Zimbabwe, Edward Shizha

Youth and Children's Studies

In Zimbabwe the need to incorporate indigenous knowledge in science education to reflect local cultural settings cannot be overemphasized. Current policies on science are situated in Western cultural definitions, thus marginalizing indigenous knowledge, which is misconceived as irrational and illogical. This study used qualitative research methods. Ten teachers were purposively selected and interviewed to gain their insights into problems faced in incorporating indigenous knowledge into science teaching. The study found that the problems were attitudinal, institutional, and systemic. Teachers were found to be conservative “gatekeepers” who exhibited negative attitudes toward indigenous science and supported maintaining the teaching of Western science. …

Elected Texas District And County Attorneys’ Perceptions Of Crime Victim Involvement In Criminal Prosecutions, John W. Stickels, Bradley Joseph Michelsen, Alex Delcarmen

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

This study tested the utility of the Victim Satisfaction Model of the criminal justice system by surveying elected District and County Attorneys' perceptions of victims' involvement in the charging and plea bargaining stages of the criminal justice process. This study used a cross-section research design. Every elected District and County Attorney in Texas received self-administered questionnaires. The results of this study support the utility of the Victim Satisfaction Model of the criminal justice system, further our understanding of prosecutorial decision-making, and have important implications for the American criminal justice system.

Nicotine Replacement And Behavioral Therapy For Smoking Cessation In Pregnancy, Cheryl A. Oncken

UCHC Articles - Research

Abstract

Background

This study examines whether adding nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for pregnant smokers increases rates of smoking cessation.

Methods

An open-label randomized trial (Baby Steps, n = 181) of CBT-only versus CBT+NRT (choice of patch, gum, or lozenge; 1:2 randomization) was used. Data were collected from 2003 through 2005; analyses were conducted in 2006 and 2007. Outcomes were biochemically validated self-reported smoking status at 7-weeks post-randomization, 38-weeks gestation, and 3-months postpartum.

Results

Women in the CBT+NRT arm were almost three times more likely than women in the CBT-only arm to have biochemically validated cessation …

Tourism In Lugu Hu: Helpful Or Harmful? Examining The Impact Of Tourism On Lugu Lake’S People And Environment, Joana Chan Oct 2007

Tourism In Lugu Hu: Helpful Or Harmful? Examining The Impact Of Tourism On Lugu Lake’S People And Environment, Joana Chan

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Is tourism a boon or burden to the land and the people that it impacts? This question has plagued academics for ages. On the one hand, tourism brings not only definite economic growth for the local people, but also motivation for preservation of the local landscape. On the other hand, the arrival of tourists also ironically brings definite cultural and environmental transformations to the very people and land that visitors travel so far to see and experience.

My research examines the complexities of tourism and its impact on the environment and people of Lugu Lake, Yunnan. By surveying social and …

In the second section of this paper I will recount my personal experience of …

Responsibility, Reconciliation, And Remembrance: Serbian Youth Perspectives In Dealing With The Past, Erica Getto Oct 2007

Responsibility, Reconciliation, And Remembrance: Serbian Youth Perspectives In Dealing With The Past, Erica Getto

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Dealing with the past is a process in which a society determines truthful facts of previous events, and with the support of civil society and its leaders, undergoes a transformation from a culture of conflict to one of peace, through reconciliation and depolarization . Youth between the ages of 18-30 are the future of Serbia. They grew up in the midst of war, under a regime that greatly affected the economical, social, and political stability of the newly independent country. Because of these factors, their perspectives and opinions become critical in determining how this country is approaching topics of the …

The 1916 Easter Rising: A History Of Commemoration, Emily Litwin Oct 2007

The 1916 Easter Rising: A History Of Commemoration, Emily Litwin

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Before traveling to Ireland, I watched the film Michael Collins; aside from the single paragraph of text allocated to the 1916 Easter Rising in The Course of Irish History, the film shaped my understanding of the Irish fight for independence. As the semester progressed, this basic understanding evolved into a solid grasp of Irish history and politics. As a student of history with a specific interest in historiography, I aimed to structure my Independent Research Project (ISP) around Irish history so that I could delve deeper into my preferred field. Throughout the semester my intrigue piqued as I noticed how …

Usa: A Civilization Of Its Own?, Peter O'Brien Oct 2007

Usa: A Civilization Of Its Own?, Peter O'Brien

Political Science Faculty Research

"The object [America] is wholly new in the world. It is singular...Nothing in history is parallel to it."1 -----Edmund Burke

Distinct civilizations can have common origins.2 Byzantine, Western and Islamic civilization each grew its separate way from Judaic and Hellenic roots. In similar fashion, the United States of America may well be in the process of branching off to form a civilization increasingly distinguishable from European civilization. The separation has been gradually but steadily underway since 1776. However, in civilizational time, 240 years represent a rather short period. The division has not yet fully matured. So the precise …

Immigration Policy, Cultural Pluralism And Trade: Evidence From The White Australia Policy, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse Oct 2007

Immigration Policy, Cultural Pluralism And Trade: Evidence From The White Australia Policy, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse

Economics

Examining data for Australia and 101 trading partners that span the years 1989–2000, we find immigrants from nations afforded preference under the White Australia policy exert greater proportional influences on Australian imports from their home countries compared to immigrants from nations not privy to such preference. Immigrants from this latter group of countries influence Australian exports to their home countries proportionally more than do immigrants from the former group. We also find immigrant-trade links vary across disaggregated measures of trade. The results suggest that cultural diversity, affected here by immigration policy, is relevant to a nation’s trade patterns.

Maryland And The Constitution Of The United States: An Introductory Essay, William L. Reynolds Oct 2007

Maryland And The Constitution Of The United States: An Introductory Essay, William L. Reynolds

Faculty Scholarship

The State of Maryland and the attorneys who practice in it have played a profound role in the history of the Constitution of the United States. That relationship should not surprise anyone: after all, Maryland was one of the original thirteen states, and its proximity to the nation’s capitol ensured that its lawyers would play an active role in the bar of the Supreme Court. Although the case names alone would make that history apparent – McCulloch v. Maryland, Brown v. Maryland, Federal Baseball – I am not aware of a serious scholarly effort to bring that history to the …

Top Performing Hedge Funds: Does Geography Make A Difference?, Knowledge@Smu

Do hedge funds earn above-average returns? Is there a way to identify these top performers? Where hedge funds are located makes the difference, according to Singapore Management University finance professor Melvyn Teo, who is also director of the university’s BNP Paribas Hedge Fund Centre. Teo puts forward evidence for the hypothesis that locally-managed hedge funds are better able to monitor their investments and, therefore, generate superior returns.
