Higher Power: Strategic Capacity For State And National Organizing, Richard L. Wood
Higher Power: Strategic Capacity For State And National Organizing, Richard L. Wood
Sociology Faculty and Staff Publications
This chapter studies an organizing effort of the PICO National Network, which organizes in poor, working-class, and middle-class neighborhoods in the United States, mostly in urban areas. PICO engages in faith-based community organizing to generate democratic pressure to advance the interests of its nonelite, highly multiracial participants. The research reported here goes beyond other studies of grassroots organizing through its focus on efforts to influence policymaking on health care, public safety, education, immigrant rights, and housing at the state and national levels.'

Reading Robert Bellah: On Faith, Culture, And Power In America, Richard L. Wood
Sociology Faculty and Staff Publications
For four decades, Robert Bellah's books, articles, and public speaking have influenced thoughtful sectors of American faith communities, including readers of Christian Century. Though widely known among academic specialists, a holder of an elite endowed chair at one of the premier public universities in America, Bellah is best known in church circles for the books Habits of the Heart and The Good Society (both co-authored with the team of Richard Madsen, William Sullivan, Ann Swidler, and Steven Tipton). Their interpretation of the deep cultural patterns of American life has found resonance among religious leaders of many stripes, and shaped sermons …
Increasing Return On Investment For Standardized Patient Training Programs Through Development Of Cost-Effective Programs, Paul Perea
UME Faculty and Staff Educational Scholarship
Higher stakes now exist for standardized patient programs to deliver student performance success in light of the required USMLE Step 2 Clinical Skills exam. Identifying and increasing the educational return on the financial investment for these programs is critical as programs are challenged to demonstrate their value to the organization. Rising expectations and finite budgets create an impetus to provide quality outcomes in the most efficient way. Implementing the instructional design process creates systematic training through a scientific approach to training and evaluation. A structured training methodology provides an effective means to interpret the outcomes of a training cycle. This …

Supporting mobility in IP networks is a crucial step towards satisfying the nomadic communication paradigms on the current Internet. The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) presents one approach towards supporting IP mobility and is increasingly gaining in popularity as the next generation multimedia signaling and session establishment protocol. In this paper, we explore the design of an efficient approach to inter-domain SIP mobility in an attempt to improve personal and terminal mobility schemes. We apply a persistent identification framework to application level SIP addressing by introducing a level of indirection on top of the traditional SIP architecture. We show how this …
Innovation And National Economic Strategy, Andres C. Salazar
Innovation And National Economic Strategy, Andres C. Salazar
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
In the formulation of a national economic policy today the need to compete in a global knowledge economy has been recognized. The importance of the knowledge services sector now rivals that of materials and products and their associated processing, manufacturing and distribution sub-sectors. A policy component common to both knowledge services and businesses handling tangible assets is a country’s investment and support for innovation as part of a national science and technology (S &T) strategy. Innovation can play a major role in creating new business opportunities, in retaining and perhaps expanding current business dominance, and in transitioning a country’s assets …

Design Principles For Downtown Revitalization: Las Cruces, New Mexico, Design Planning Assistance Center
Design Principles For Downtown Revitalization: Las Cruces, New Mexico, Design Planning Assistance Center
Design and Planning Assistance Center - Projects
The buildings of and around downtown Las Cruces reflect the unique blend of cultures and activities found within the city. Or at least it did. Today, many of the Art-Deco theaters, the historic brick structures and pueblo-style buildings sit vacant. Drab facades and limited businesses fronting the Main Street Mall now characterize the landscape, creating a challenge for Las Cruces city officials and downtown property owners. To rejuvenate the current lackluster and uninviting state of Main Street in Las Cruces, the New Mexico Main Street Program contracted with the Design, Planning and Assistance Center (DPAC), based at the School of …

Hinterland Electrification Strategy, Office Of The Prime Minister, Guyana
Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports
The Government of Guyana, as part of its socio-economic development and poverty alleviation objective, has embarked on a program to extend electricity to unserved areas where extension of existing distribution networks is deemed to be economically feasible. This document outlines the electrification strategy being used. This strategy includes a description of the potential energy sources in the area (solar, hydropower, wind, biomass, biofuel, diesel) and specifies an approach to test their viability for hinterland electrification.

Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports
This publication provides stimulating analysis on future scenarios of energy use, which focus on a range of technologies that are expected to emerge in the coming years and decades. There is now universal recognition of the fact that new technologies and much greater use of some that already exist provide the most hopeful prospects for mitigation of emissions of GHGs. It is for this reason that the International Energy Agency, which in the past pursued an approach based on a single time path of energy demand and supply, has now developed alternative scenarios that incorporate future technological changes. In the Fourth …

African American Perceptions Of Childhood Behavioral Disorders And Mental Health Services, Chant Wellington
African American Perceptions Of Childhood Behavioral Disorders And Mental Health Services, Chant Wellington
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation investigated African American parents/caregivers perceptions of childhood psychopathology and psychological services. The four participants of this study were African American parents/caregivers of children who were suspected by their respective schools of having symptoms of emotional, cognitive and or behavioral disorders. The researcher of this study asked these participants to describe their lived experiences of their children's functioning that school based evaluators consider atypical.
Data were obtained in the form of an initial phone interview. At a later date a face to face follow-up interview was audio taped and transcribed in order to obtain situated and general narratives.
Findings …
Effects Of A Photoaging Appeal On Sun Protection Attitudes Of Female Adolescents, Suzanna Papasavvas
Effects Of A Photoaging Appeal On Sun Protection Attitudes Of Female Adolescents, Suzanna Papasavvas
Theses : Honours
Millions of people purposefully and dangerously expose themselves to the sun with the aim of attaining tan, especially female adolescents who perceive a tan as attractive. The primary consequence of such exposure is skin cancer as well as premature ageing of the skin which is known as photoaging. Empirical evidence indicates that photoaging photography, which explicitly illustrates the ageing of skin through the use of a UV -filter, as well as photoaging information, contributes to the efficacy of appearance-based health promotion interventions which aim to increase sun protection intentions and behaviours. The present literature review indicates that the effectiveness of …

Blogging The Other: Representations Of The Australian Islamic Diaspora, Judith Elund
Theses : Honours
Recent events have seen an increased focus on Islam and Muslims throughout the world. In Western nations, this focus has often turned into fear and the demonisation of an 'other' that is regularly misunderstood and misrepresented, further exacerbating tensions between the West and Islam. International terrorist activities, such as the London bombings of July 7, 2005 have seen an increase in fear of Muslims and of potential terrorism on our shores, ensuring Muslim issues have become a major focus in Australian news. Taking 7/7 as an example, this paper supplements recent studies in exploring how Australian news media position Muslims …
Understanding Personal Carers' Experiences Of Caring For Older People In Pain, Kristi Holloway
Understanding Personal Carers' Experiences Of Caring For Older People In Pain, Kristi Holloway
Theses : Honours
Pain is a complex phenomenon that can be challenging for staff working in residential aged care facilities (RACFs) (Fisher et al., 2002; Twycross, 2002). A high prevalence of pain reported by older individuals has been reported and suggests that further study in this area is warranted (Higgins, Madjar & Walton, 2004). Research suggests that a significant barrier to effective pain management in the elderly is the provision of primary care by care staff who have little or no education about pain, pain assessment or pain management (Allcock, McGarry & Elkan, 2002). Studies have identified personal carers as being in a …

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
ThisbookwrittenbyA. Schumann &F. Smarandache isdevotedtoadvances of non-Archimedean multiple-validity idea and its applications to logical reasoning. Leibnitz was the first who proposed Archimedes’ axiom to be rejected. He postulated infinitesimals (infinitely small numbers) of the unit interval [0,1] which are larger than zero, but smaller than each positive real number. Robinson applied this idea into modern mathematics in [117] and developed so-called non-standard analysis. In the framework of non-standard analysis there were obtained many interesting results examined in [37], [38], [74], [117].
There exists also a different version of mathematical analysis in that Archimedes’ axiom is rejected, namely, p-adic analysis (e.g., …

Suggestions For Urban Water Conservation Planning: A New Mexico Perspective, Andrew Funk
Suggestions For Urban Water Conservation Planning: A New Mexico Perspective, Andrew Funk
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
The need for a comprehensive water conservation plan in New Mexico is evident in its vulnerability to drought, climate change, and population growth. A state-wide plan needs to eliminate nonrevenue water loss and excessive end uses beyond the capacity of current policies. A three-step water conservation planning framework is introduced, and suggestions are presented that may empower New Mexico to cope with 21st-century resource challenges. The first step identifies the potential water and energy savings associated with efficiency and conservation improvements by disaggregating all urban residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional sectors end uses. Step two identifies the institutional, statutory, technical, …

Aviation Law: Cases And Materials, Steve V. Dedmon
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
Just to clarify my position from the beginning, this is a great book. However, to avoid the very appearance of impropriety I must disclose Robert M. Jarvis was my faculty advisor as a 1L while attending Nova southeastern University in 1995. I remember our initial meeting over a pizza lunch during which he solicited comments concerning our law school experience up to that point. I do not remember my answer but I believe it included some disdain for the law school educational process and probably the professors. Additionally, his wife was a guest lecturer for an international business class I …

Current Trends In Air Traffic Controller Recruitment And Training, Jose R. Ruiz
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) currently employs approximately 15,000 air traffic controllers (FAA, 2004). Over the next 10 years, more than 11,000 members of the air traffic control (ATC) workforce will become eligible to retire (FAA, 2004). How is the FAA planning to offset this impending wave of retirements? In December 2004, the FAA announced its plan to hire 12,500 air traffic controllers over the next 10 years (FAA, 2004). Figure 1 displays projected controller losses and hires through the year 2013.
