Kenya: Begin Community Dialogue On Fgm/C By Discussing Cultural Justification, Frontiers In Reproductive Health

Reproductive Health

Female genital cutting is strongly supported among the Somali ethnic community in Kenya, and the severest form (infibulation) is primarily practiced. This type of cut is associated with increased incidence and seriousness of obstetric and gynecological problems relative to uncut women and those with less severe forms of FGM/C. As stated in this brief, efforts to encourage abandonment should begin with community discussion about the socio-cultural reasons for cutting. Simultaneously, health-care providers need training in how to manage complications of FGM/C. In 2004, FRONTIERS collaborated with UNICEF on a four-month diagnostic study on FGM/C practices among the Somali community in …

Senegal: Mainstreaming Adolescent Health: Building On Local Support Systems, Frontiers In Reproductive Health

Reproductive Health

In 1999, FRONTIERS began a three-year collaboration with the World Health Organization, the Center for Research and Training, the Population Training Group, and the Ministries of Health, Education, and Youth to test the feasibility, effectiveness, and cost of school-, clinic-, and community-based interventions to improve the reproductive health of youth aged 10–19. This adolescent reproductive health (ARH) study showed that the multisectoral, multidisciplinary approach increased knowledge about youth reproductive health among young people, the community, schools, and health-care providers. As noted in this brief, one of the guiding principles of the ARH study was to build sustainability through existing institutions, …

Memory And Melodrama In Colonial And Postcolonial French Film, Mary Catherine Dillon Jan 2007

Memory And Melodrama In Colonial And Postcolonial French Film, Mary Catherine Dillon

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Critical analysis of colonial and postcolonial cinema is a growing field of academic research. The editor of the International Journal of Francophone Studies, Kamal Salhi, explains that many American and English university French programs now offer degrees in this area of study (2). One line of research in this field centers on colonial and postcolonial memory in French cinema. This is because colonial memory has a problematic relationship to French national ideology. This thesis explores the causal connection between French colonial and postcolonial memory and melodramatic structures. Two French films, Indochine and Chocolat were the subjects of this study. These …

Environmental Sustainability: Jacksonville Vs. Navajo Nation, Rachel Freeman, Jessica Rockwood

All Volumes (2001-2008)

This project investigated the relationship between environmental sustainability and cultural beliefs in two very different American societies. In particular, we compared how citizens of contemporary Jacksonville, FL view and exploit the environment in comparison with environmental utilization of the Native Americans in Navajo Nation, which spans across the states of AZ, NM, and UT. This evaluation entailed conducting surveys of individuals in both populations, as well as an aspect of cultural immersion in which we lived amongst the Navajo for approximately three to four weeks during the summer of 2005. Immersion allowed us to participate in the Navajo way of …

Predictability Of Cardiovascular Disease Event Rates By Common Carotid Artery Intima-Media Thickness In The Atherosclerosis Risk In Communties (Aric) Study, Mara Hollander Jan 2007

Predictability Of Cardiovascular Disease Event Rates By Common Carotid Artery Intima-Media Thickness In The Atherosclerosis Risk In Communties (Aric) Study, Mara Hollander

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Background: Carotid artery intima media thickness (IMT) is a non-invasive reliable predictor of the extent and severity of CVD. There is difficulty acquiring all measurements for validated three-site carotid IMT. More accessible one-site common carotid artery (CCA) IMT has not yet been validated with CVD events.

Purpose: This study will evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of one-site CCA IMT compared to three-site IMT in predicting cardiovascular disease (CVD) events. Assessment of whether the association of incremental one-site CCA IMT to a CVD event is significant with and without adjustment for traditional cardiac risk factors was made.

Methodology: Data from The Atherosclerosis …

From Habermas To "Get Rich Or Die Tryin": Hip Hop, The Telecommunications Act Of 1996, And The Black Public Sphere, Akilah N. Folami

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

This Article explores the manner in which gangsta rappers, who are primarily young urban Black' men, navigate the mass media and rap's commercialization of the gangsta image to continue to provide seeds of political expression and resistance to that image. While other scholars have considered the political nature of rap in the context of the First Amendment, this Article's approach is unique in that it is the first to explore such concepts through the lenses of Habermas' ideal public sphere and those of his critics. Mhile many have written gangsta rap off as being commercially co-opted or useless given its …

Information Technologies And Civic Engagement: Perspectives From Librarianship And Planning, Aimée C. Quinn, Laxmi Ramasubramanian Jan 2007

Information Technologies And Civic Engagement: Perspectives From Librarianship And Planning, Aimée C. Quinn, Laxmi Ramasubramanian

Library Scholarship

Urban planning and librarianship are parallel fields in many ways. Both have theoretical and practical underpinnings driving each discipline; are interdisciplinary in focus; and both professions gather and disseminate information to stakeholders. Essential to the success of each discipline is an engaged user population. The authors use a case study from the Village of Oak Park to examine and reflect upon the effect of the Internet and other technologies in the public's ability to participate in an open planning process. The Village of Oak Park is known for its architectural heritage and outspoken community. Within its 4.5 square miles live …

Human Zoning: The Constitutionality Of Sex-Offender Residency Restrictions As Applied To Post-Conviction Offenders, Ryan Hawkins Jan 2007

Human Zoning: The Constitutionality Of Sex-Offender Residency Restrictions As Applied To Post-Conviction Offenders, Ryan Hawkins

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[H]igh recidivism rates shows that the threat of jail time alone is not sufficient to curb sex crimes. With this in mind, legislators sought to find other ways that would protect potential victims. Community notification laws were the first policy to be implemented. Community notification methods included press releases, flyers, phone calls, door-to-door contact, neighborhood meetings, and Internet sites, which informed citizens of the name, location, and/or other information of persons who had been convicted of sex crimes.

Part II of this note will describe current sex-offender restrictions in place across the country. Part III will provide a constitutional analysis …

Mapping Alimony: From Status To Contract And Beyond, Gaytri Kachroo Jan 2007

Mapping Alimony: From Status To Contract And Beyond, Gaytri Kachroo

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “With the introduction of no-fault divorce, one spouse could unilaterally petition for divorce, in most states, by demonstrating a period of separation or the impossibility of reconciliation. The possibility that a marriage can be dissolved without a showing of fault has obliterated the need to seek consent from the other spouse contesting it. This can preclude the need for a mutually designed financial arrangement. Courts now play a greater role in such financial arrangements and are more likely to conform such financial arrangements to statutory standards. From state to state, despite the prevalence of such conforming by courts, resulting …

Battered Women, Homicide Convictions, And Sentencing: The Case For Clemency, Carol Jacobsen, Kammy Mizga, Lynn O'Orio Jan 2007

Battered Women, Homicide Convictions, And Sentencing: The Case For Clemency, Carol Jacobsen, Kammy Mizga, Lynn O'Orio

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

For battered women who are forced to kill their attackers, unequal treatment by the law and gendered modes of punishment often lead to unfair convictions and sentences. In a study conducted by the Michigan Battered Women's Clemency Project, startling levels of discrimination in the courts against women who were victims of domestic violence were revealed. In this study, victims of domestic violence had higher conviction rates and longer sentences than all other defendants charged with homicide. The criminal and legal systems have failed to protect battered women from being killed or being forced to kill. Clemency remains the only hope …

Emerson Family Values: Claims To Duration And Renewal In American Narratives Of Divorce, Love And Marriage, Mae Kuykendall Jan 2007

Emerson Family Values: Claims To Duration And Renewal In American Narratives Of Divorce, Love And Marriage, Mae Kuykendall

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

Themes in American family life contain contradictions between a public narrative of duration and a private narrative of renewal. This seeming conflict in values, in combination with a high divorce rate, might be thought to indicate that the marital vows are a culturally hollow ceremony. In fact, Americans' disposition in matters of family seemingly to waver between vows of duration and belief in renewal can be accounted for as well as given moral weight by the thinking and influence of Ralph Waldo Emerson. Dismissed at times as an idealist, a proponent of unthinking American individualism, and an irresponsible wordsmith, Emerson …
