Neurobiology Meets Social Psychology: An Explanation Of Feminists’ Attitudes Toward Abuse, Christen D. Hazlett Jan 2007

Neurobiology Meets Social Psychology: An Explanation Of Feminists’ Attitudes Toward Abuse, Christen D. Hazlett

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Why might traumatic events during childhood, such as child abuse, be related to strong identification with more radical feminist beliefs? One explanation may lie in the changes in morphology and physiology of the brain in individuals with a history of child abuse. These changes in the limbic system specifically may influence cognition, affect, and behaviors that are consistent with radical feminist ideology.

Looted Art: The Case Of The Parthenon Sculptures, Alison Lindsey Moore Jan 2007

Looted Art: The Case Of The Parthenon Sculptures, Alison Lindsey Moore

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Many artifacts which comprise private and museum collections today were possibly stolen from their country of origin and illegally smuggled into the country in which they now reside. In the late eighteenth century, the global powers of England and France exercised their authority over less powerful countries, such as Greece and Egypt, by exporting those countries’ traditional artifacts. Now, the governments of the less dominant countries no longer dismiss the pieces as useless artifacts, but view them as valuable cultural objects. The number of countries attempting to regain possession of lost artifacts from private and museum collections was recently increased. …

Formal Training, Personal Experience, And The Ability To Predict Research Findings In Social Psychology, Carrie Quarterman Jan 2007

Formal Training, Personal Experience, And The Ability To Predict Research Findings In Social Psychology, Carrie Quarterman

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Researchers in the past have found that personal experience and formal training lead to better accuracy when predicting research outcomes in areas of psychology. Personal experience and formal training were compared in this study on the ability of students to predict research outcomes in social psychology. Students completed questionnaires that measured their social engagement (a proxy to personal experience), their academic history and status, and their knowledge of social psychological findings. Students with more psychology classes taken in college were better able to predict research outcomes (r = .24). Psychology majors knew more findings in social psychology than nonpsychology majors …

Education Organization Baseline Control Protection And Trusted Level Security, Wasim A. Al-Hamdani Jan 2007

Education Organization Baseline Control Protection And Trusted Level Security, Wasim A. Al-Hamdani

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Many education organizations have adopted for security the enterprise best practices for implementation on their campuses, while others focus on ISO Standard (or/and) the National Institution of Standards and Technology.

All these adoptions are dependent on IT personal and their experiences or knowledge of the standard. On top of this is the size of the education organizations. The larger the population in an education organization, the more the problem of information and security become very clear. Thus, they have been obliged to comply with information security issues and adopt the national or international standard. The case is quite different when …

From Adulterous Gametes To Heterologous Nation: Tracing The Boundaries Of Reproduction In Italy, Milena Marchesi Jan 2007

From Adulterous Gametes To Heterologous Nation: Tracing The Boundaries Of Reproduction In Italy, Milena Marchesi

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This article traces discursive and political attempts to discipline the reproduction of the Italian nation by analyzing the approval of a controversial law disciplining access to new reproductive technologies (NRTs) in 2004. The restriction of new reproductive technologies in Italy reflects a contemporary re-negotiation of gender ideologies and a renewed ascendance of the Vatican in Italian politics and society. Although abortion remains legal in Italy, the NRT legislation recognizes the embryo as a subject while in political discourse demographic alarmism slides into warnings of social disintegration. The debate over the threat posed by technologically assisted reproduction to Italian families and …

Solving The ‘Initiatory Construction’ Puzzle (And Improving Direct Democracy) By Appropriate Refocusing On Sponsor Intent, Glenn Smith Jan 2007

Solving The ‘Initiatory Construction’ Puzzle (And Improving Direct Democracy) By Appropriate Refocusing On Sponsor Intent, Glenn Smith

Faculty Scholarship

This Article synthesizes and critiques a dozen years of scholarship about judicial construction of legislation passed by voter initiative. The Article then makes a comprehensive case for an alternative approach: an appropriately enhanced focus on the intent of initiative sponsors. More specifically, the Article validates, through analysis of recent California decisions, a longstanding scholarly consensus that the prevailing judicial search for "the intent of the voters" is seriously flawed. The Article provides the first synthesis to date of reform proposals offered by "initiatory-construction" scholars; the discussion contends that these proposals collectively fail four key evaluation criteria. Building on the 2003 …

George Frederick Wright And The Harmony Of Science And Revelation, Peter Sachs Collopy Jan 2007

George Frederick Wright And The Harmony Of Science And Revelation, Peter Sachs Collopy

Honors Papers

George Frederick Wright was an Oberlin-educated theologian and self-taught geologist who lived from 1838 to 1921. He was among the most influential Christian interpreters of Darwinism as Americans began to debate the theory in the 1870s and 1880s. In his writings, Wright illustrated a method for reconciling evolutionary theory with Christianity. Wright himself was a Calvinist, and he argued that his own conservative theological tradition shared important characteristics with Darwinism. At the turn of the century, however, Wright began to criticize both Darwinism in particular and evolutionary thought generally. A decade later, he was among the authors of a series …
