Performing Tourism In Venice: Local Residents In Focus, Bernadette Quinn
Performing Tourism In Venice: Local Residents In Focus, Bernadette Quinn
Articles
In contrast to the growing literature on tourist mobility as a performed art, relatively little attention has been paid to resident mobility in tourism places. This paper examines how residents encounter tourists using the concept of tourism as a performance. Drawing on the case of the historic city-center of Venice in northeastern Italy, it explores the spatialities produced through the embodied practices of local mobilities. The paper finds that their movements demonstrated a marked degree of agency. It concludes by arguing that the concept of tourism as performance affords useful insights into how local residents are proactively and intricately involved …
[Insert Song Lyrics Here]: The Uses And Misuses Of Popular Music Lyrics In Legal Writing, Alex B. Long
[Insert Song Lyrics Here]: The Uses And Misuses Of Popular Music Lyrics In Legal Writing, Alex B. Long
Scholarly Works
Legal writers frequently utilize the lyrics of popular music artists to help advance a particular theme or argument in legal writing. And if the music we listen to says something about us as individuals, then the music we, the legal profession as a whole, write about may something about who we are as a profession. A study of citations to popular artists in law journals reveals that, not surprisingly, Bob Dylan is the most popular artist in legal scholarship. The list of names of the other artists rounding out the Top Ten essentially reads like a Who's Who of baby …
Public Interest Media Activism And Advocacy As A Social Movement: A Review Of The Literature, Philip M. Napoli
Public Interest Media Activism And Advocacy As A Social Movement: A Review Of The Literature, Philip M. Napoli
McGannon Center Working Paper Series
This report examines the academic literature focused on public interest media and communications activism and advocacy within the U.S. and abroad (labeled, in the name of brevity, the “media reform” movement throughout this report). This report first seeks to outline the parameters of the movement under consideration, in terms of the primary conceptual frames employed, outcomes pursued, and strategic approaches. As this section illustrates, the media reform movement is characterized by a diverse array of conceptual frames (ranging from “media reform” to “media justice” to “communication rights” to “media democracy”), and a hesitancy at this point to coalesce around a …

Feminizing Fred: Exploring The Feminization Of Men In Advertising As Seen In Rolling Stone, Whitney Couiter
Feminizing Fred: Exploring The Feminization Of Men In Advertising As Seen In Rolling Stone, Whitney Couiter
Rollins Undergraduate Research Journal
Everyday, we are inundated with advertisements. In our media saturated world, it is hard to remain unaffected by the thousands of ads that we see each day. Many studies have been conducted on how advertising affects our perception of gender. By applying research conducted on the feminine role in advertising to depictions of men, this paper argues that although gender roles are still defined in today’s advertisements, there is a shift to portraying men more effeminately. This is particularly represented through music culture, as seen in advertisements included in Rolling Stone’s glamorization of androgyny and thus defying rules of masculinity …
The Emergence Of Community Radio In The United States: A Historical Examination Of The National Federation Of Community Broadcasters, 1970 To 1990, Michael William Huntsberger
The Emergence Of Community Radio In The United States: A Historical Examination Of The National Federation Of Community Broadcasters, 1970 To 1990, Michael William Huntsberger
Faculty Publications
The National Federation of Community Broadcasters is the oldest and largest organization of community-oriented, nonprofit radio stations in the United States. Nevertheless, only a handful of scholars have considered the NFCB and its place in the history of mass media in the U.S. In the years leading up to and following the establishment of the NFCB in 1975, the public policy environment that guided the activities noncommercial radio, and all of American mass media, changed dramatically. This study provides a historical account of the NFCB during these formative years, and examines the political, economic, and social forces that propelled the …
Biomedical Applications Of Polypeptide Multilayer Nanofilms And Microcapsules, Jai Simha S. Rudra
Biomedical Applications Of Polypeptide Multilayer Nanofilms And Microcapsules, Jai Simha S. Rudra
Doctoral Dissertations
The past few years have witnessed considerable growth in synthetic polymer chemistry and physics, biomaterials science, and nano-scale engineering. Research on polypeptide multilayer films, coatings, and microcapsules is located at the intersection of these areas and are promising materials for applications in medicine, biotechnology, environmental science. Most envisioned applications of polypeptide multilayers have a biomedical bent. This dissertation on polypeptide multilayer film applications covers key points of polypeptides as materials, means of polymer production, film preparation, film characterization methods, and key points of current research in basic science. Both commercial and designed peptides have been used to fabricate films for …
Introduction To The 50th Anniversary Of 12 Angry Men, Nancy S. Marder
Introduction To The 50th Anniversary Of 12 Angry Men, Nancy S. Marder
Chicago-Kent Law Review
The year 2007 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the movie 12 Angry Men. This movie offers a portrayal of jury deliberations that is rare in the history of American filmmaking. One interpretation of the movie is that it portrays the jury as a group of twelve ordinary men who learn in the course of their deliberations what it means to be a jury. The jurors, led by the persevering Juror #8, played by Henry Fonda, eventually learn to put aside indifference, prejudice, and personal enmity to piece together the evidence with a critical eye, and to deliver a verdict …

Deliberation In 12 Angry Men, Barbara Allen Babcock, Ticien Marie Sassoubre
Chicago-Kent Law Review
The authors explore the ways 12 Angry Men remains a relevant and teachable portrayal of the mysterious process of jury deliberation. Even though few juries today would look like the jury in the film, its performance reveals the continuing value of the institution.
A Critical Analysis Of The Current Status Of The Fijian Language, Stephanie Roberts
A Critical Analysis Of The Current Status Of The Fijian Language, Stephanie Roberts
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
As the country of Fiji strives to keep up in the throws of modernity of the 21st century, it simultaneously attempts to grip onto its culture that distinguishes it from the rest of the world. Linguistically, Fiji is categorized into three general divisions (although each being greatly influenced since the 19th century). English, Fijian and Hindi serve as the three “official” languages of Fiji; as components of one country, they play significant roles in the formation of national identity. Language is a necessary element of culture, and was therefore studied in order to promote cultural identity for the people of …

Law and Contemporary Problems
Copyright lawyers talk and write a lot about the uncertainties of fair use and the deterrent effects of a clearance culture on publishers, teachers, filmmakers, and the like, but know less about the choices people make about copyright on a daily basis, especially when they are not working. Here, Tushnet examines one subcultural group that engages in a variety of practices, from pure copying and distribution of others' works to creation of new stories, art, and audiovisual works: the media-fan community. Among other things, she discusses some differences between fair use and fan practices, focused around attribution as an alternative …
Deep Ecology And Postmodernity: Making Space For Conversation, Chris Drinkwater
Deep Ecology And Postmodernity: Making Space For Conversation, Chris Drinkwater
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[Fourth paragraph]
I begin with the fact of ecology's virtual exclusion from cultural studies. Cultural studies are centrally concerned with issues of meaning, subjectivity, objectivity and knowledge. They attempt to describe their production, conditions and complex structural effects. They are particularly interested in effects of inclusion and exclusion: for instance, "What is a legitimate object of attention within a particular discourse?" Why do cultural studies not attend to ecology? Why is negligible attention paid to a discourse and cultural movement, which are so challenging to dominant values and ways of life? I suggest that the omission is not accidental. Cultural …

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
High-risk technologies cannot prevent, predict, or contain disasters while discourses about such disasters exhibit uncontrolled interpretive possibilities. There is no safe haven, no place that can be free of technological disasters, and such 'unnecessary' violence. What we can plan are escape routes and lifeboats that may rescue us occasionally and fail at other times. Paradoxically lifeboats, radars, containment measures, meters, backup systems cannot shelter all of us from technological risk. Is this the meaning of civilization and human progress? We need to question not merely high-risk technology and its engendered profit but the cultural future premised on such …

[First paragraph]
At the time of finalizing EcoCultures for publication, nearly all discussions in mass media remind us that climate change has been caused by anthropogenic excesses in the last three centuries. Environmental concern, intertwined with a critical and scholarly perspective, is also at the heart of EcoCultures: Culture Studies and the Environment. The twelve academic articles comprising this issue were written by scholars based in the North and South, speaking different languages yet living in a multicultural global world, and positioned in disciplines ranging from landscape and environmental history, literature and gender studies to visual studies and art. …
Fabricating Freddy Vs. Jason: Understanding A Motion Picture As A Social Encounter Between Fans And Filmmakers, Jason M. Rapelje
Fabricating Freddy Vs. Jason: Understanding A Motion Picture As A Social Encounter Between Fans And Filmmakers, Jason M. Rapelje
Dissertations
The break in the mass communicative chain, which separates producers and receivers from one another in both time and space, impedes researchers from studying motion pictures as social encounters. As with face-to-face encounters, producers and receivers of motion pictures depend upon the use of "rules of relevance" (Goffman, 1961) and "typifactory schemes" (Berger & Luckmann, 1966) for their encounters to take place. I examine the social encounter that takes place between some of the filmmakers and fans of Freddy vs Jason through the use of these concepts, as well as a revision of John B. Thompson's (1990) methodological framework of …
Contemporary Art Facing The Earth’S Irreducibility, Amanda Boetzkes
Contemporary Art Facing The Earth’S Irreducibility, Amanda Boetzkes
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
This article considers the aesthetic strategies and ethical implications of contemporary earth art. Drawing from feminist and ecological phenomenology, I argue that an ethical preoccupation with the earth is identifiable in works that evoke the sensorial plenitude of natural phenomena, but refuse to condense it into a coherent image or art object. By denying a perceptual grasp of the earth, contemporary earth artists question the possibility of representing it as such. They thereby position the earth as a territory of alterity that exists beyond our conceptual and perceptual limits. This approach counters two deeply flawed but nevertheless pervasive stances towards …
Gestures Toward Cross-Species Reciprocal Relations In Contemporary Poetics, Mary Newell
Gestures Toward Cross-Species Reciprocal Relations In Contemporary Poetics, Mary Newell
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
In this essay, I explore some embodied bases of ethical attitudes toward human/ animal exchanges in the texts of three contemporary authors: Mary Oliver, Heller Levinson, and Adrienne Rich. Since other species share with humans varieties of agency, sentience, and purposive activity, I suggest that reciprocity is a fundamental aim in cross-species relations. Phenomenological philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty depicts the correlation between embodied actions and attitudes, for example, between the hand movement of grasping and an appropriative attitude toward the natural world. His concept of reciprocity, grounded in the experience of one hand touching another, provides a reference for encounters that …
