Carlo Cattaneo: The Religiosity Of A Relunctant Revolutionary, Carolyn Bennett Ugolini

Theses and Dissertations

Carlo Cattaneo (1801-1869) would have been a remarkable man in any time period. He was interested in everything, and as a man of ideas was involved in the astonishing technological and stimulating political events of the nineteenth century. He encouraged the building of railways as a way to unite the Italian peninsula, and he was involved in connecting Italy to the rest of Europe through the St. Gothard Tunnel. An innovator of gas lighting in his native Milan, the great Lombard thinker was a prolific writer, and kept prodigious notes and copies of his correspondence. His economic and scientific involvement …

Ancient Texts And Modern Education : Some Service-Learning Concepts In South Asia, Kalyan Ray Jun 2007

Ancient Texts And Modern Education : Some Service-Learning Concepts In South Asia, Kalyan Ray

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議

Fundamentally different from Freudian ideas of Self which predicate much of global -- and mostly Western -- analysis of societal concerns and issues, there is a profoundly influential Asian alternative to the view of the Self. Ancient Sanskrit texts, such as the Upanishads, offer very different foci and explication of the idea of the Self, its relation to education and to each others in society, and the fundamental connection to Service-Learning. These ancient Sanskrit tests have also deeply influenced early Buddhist philosophy. Dr. Ray's presentation explores these concepts from the Taittiriya Upanishad and their influence on ideas of social connectivity …

The Lessons Of Capturing The Friedmans: Moral Panic, Institutional Denial And Due Process, Susan Bandes Jun 2007

The Lessons Of Capturing The Friedmans: Moral Panic, Institutional Denial And Due Process, Susan Bandes

College of Law Faculty

In the 1980's hundreds of childcare workers were accused of sexually abusing children in horrific ways. Arnold and Jesse Friedman, whose prosecutions are chronicled in the film Capturing the Friedmans, were among those convicted and sent to prison during this period. Sociologists have called this series of prosecutions a classic moral panic: a widespread, hostile, volatile overreaction to a perceived societal threat. This paper examines the concept of moral panic in the context of the day care sexual abuse prosecutions in general, and the Friedman prosecutions in particular. It begins by exploring the role of the legal system in …

Debate As A Weapon Of Mass Destruction, Eric English, Stephen Llano, Gordon R. Mitchell, Catherine E. Morrison, John Rief, Carly Woods Jun 2007

Debate As A Weapon Of Mass Destruction, Eric English, Stephen Llano, Gordon R. Mitchell, Catherine E. Morrison, John Rief, Carly Woods

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

This year’s intercollegiate policy debate topic calls on affirmative teams to overrule one of four Supreme Court decisions, including Ex parte Quirin, the precedent frequently invoked to justify homeland security policies such as military tribunals for Guantanamo detainees.8 In arguing to overturn Quirin, debaters employ a variety of approaches. Most teams contend that the Supreme Court’s 2006 Hamdan v. Rumsfeld decision, while helpful, does not go far enough in limiting the scope of military commissions. In this view, leaving Quirin on the books enables a troubling expansion of presidential power, with the potential to destroy transatlantic relations and abrogate …

Digg.Com And Socially-Driven Authority, Steven Ovadia Jun 2007

Digg.Com And Socially-Driven Authority, Steven Ovadia

Publications and Research

For years, librarians have been able to distill the notion of authority, in its purest form, to two simple questions: “Who said it?” and “Under whose auspices?” The answer to either, or preferably both, of these questions could tell a researcher whether to rely on the information retrieved. Today, however, in the world of online information, the notion of authority is shifting and librarians working in an instructional capacity must understand the shift and determine ways to help students cope with the changes. Searching in today’s socially-driven information era requires a different skill set for researchers looking for authoritative information. …

"Everybody Else Ain't Your Father": Reproducing Masculinity In Cinematic Sports, 1975-2000, Marc A. Ouellette Jun 2007

"Everybody Else Ain't Your Father": Reproducing Masculinity In Cinematic Sports, 1975-2000, Marc A. Ouellette

English Faculty Publications

This essay stems from two cultural strands, which intersect in one cultural form, the sports film. The first of these is the figure of the "star," as opposed to hero, who is interested only in self promotion. The second strand, masculine nurturing, provides a direct counterpoint to the first. Sociologist Robert Connell explains that "In historically recent times, sport has come to be the leading definer of masculinity in mass culture" (54). In North America, sport plays an important and increasing role in our culture. Each of the four major sports leagues added teams in the last decade of the …

Isolation And Companionship: Disability In Australian (Post) Colonial Cinema, Kathleen Ellis Jun 2007

Isolation And Companionship: Disability In Australian (Post) Colonial Cinema, Kathleen Ellis

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

Despite reflecting a postcolonial rethinking of identity throughout the 1990s, disability was positioned as ‘Other’ in Australian national cinema. The intersection between culture, gender, nationality, and disability is evident in films located in traditional colonial spaces (The Well, The Piano). This article concentrates on the fascination 1990s Australian filmmakers had with disabled women; otherwise strong characters who redundantly fulfill cultural expectations of femininity. A disability perspective illustrates the link between disability and sexism in Australian Cinema.

Gender, Disability And The Postcolonial Nexus, Pushpa Parekh

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

This study will focus on intersecting gender, disability and Postcoloniality nexus and will foreground the contributions to and interventions from gendered disability perspectives within selected postcolonial cultural works in India and the Indian diaspora, including literary works, films, performances and activism. The articulation of intersecting identity perspectives, inclusive of disability, is a significant though ignored area within Gender, Disability or Postcolonial studies. Bringing these areas together within the current modes of interdisciplinary inquiry involves crossing the boundaries of identity categories and cultural locations.

Globalized Medicine: Panacea Or Bitter Pill?, Dinesh Shah Jun 2007

Globalized Medicine: Panacea Or Bitter Pill?, Dinesh Shah

Student Scholarship

Global mindset and openness to change by upper echelon healthcare executives are positioned in this research proposal as prerequisites for competitive responses to a paradigmatic shift in the provision of healthcare worldwide. The proposal addresses a gap in the health care management literature evidenced by a deficit of empirical research pertaining to the relationships among global trade, health and health services and responds to a call for more, and more specific, cross-cultural studies that provide practical implications for international management. Motivated by prior research indicating the pivotal role of top manager's world views and attitudes on institutional responses to globalization, …

Radical Theology And The Reorganization Of The Us-American Religious System, Philippe Codde Jun 2007

Radical Theology And The Reorganization Of The Us-American Religious System, Philippe Codde

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Radical Theology and the Reorganization of the US-American Religious System," Philippe Codde uses the example of the highly popular movement of death-of-God theology in the 1960s to demonstrate the wide applicability for cultural research of Itamar Even-Zohar's polysystem theory and to illustrate the validity of Even-Zohar's assertion that peripheral elements in any system can yet occasion a dramatic shift in the system's central repertoires. Although Richard Rubenstein's reality model never made it to the center of the US-American religious system, his radical theology did impel the more traditional theologians in the center of the system finally to …

Globalisation, Empire, And The Vampire, Mario Vrbančić Jun 2007

Globalisation, Empire, And The Vampire, Mario Vrbančić

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper, "Globalisation, Empire, and the Vampire," Mario Vrbančić opens up the question of the possibility of a dialectical utopian thinking in postmodernism. Following Lacanian psychoanalytic theory, Vrbančić analyses the vampire as the nation looking both at Hardt and Negri's theory of Empire and Žižek psychoanalytically inclined theory of nationalist identification. The vampire always occurs in the wake and decay of Empires: Dracula embodies Victorian fears of the infestation of the undead by invading the imperial centre; in America vampires disperse and multiply in popular culture and the mass media; in a newly emerging global order (Empire) they may …

Merits And Motivations Of An Ashéninka Leader, Hanne Veber Jun 2007

Merits And Motivations Of An Ashéninka Leader, Hanne Veber

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

Recent approaches to life history studies emphasize the power of biography in processes of social construction, highlighting the individual—storyteller and social being—as creative and created in relation to others. Situated in collective meaning systems and their dynamics, autobiographical narration is transformed into agency as it provides definitions of situations and encodes models for action. This essay discusses alternative interpretations of the autobiographical narrative of an Ashéninka leader, Miguel Camaiteri, in Peru's Upper Amazon, focusing on the exposition of his motivations for becoming an indigenous activist and contemplating the way his self-presentation is contingent upon the political agenda he is pursuing …

The Rebirth Of Comparative Literature In Anglocalization, Anand Patil Jun 2007

The Rebirth Of Comparative Literature In Anglocalization, Anand Patil

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Anand Patil examines in his paper, "The Rebirth of Comparative Literature in Anglocalization," the debates on effects of "globalization" on literary studies and "cultures" in India. The focus of his comparative scrutiny follows the debate about the "death" of comparative literature. Patil re-imagines the rebirth of interdisciplinarity, a basic tenet of the discipline of comparative literature and a characteristic of globalization. He has coined the term "Anglocalization" to analyze the complexity of the effects of globalization in the multilingual and multicultural situation of the sub-continent. The term is used to describe a tripartite process: Anglicization by global English, economic liberation, …

Empathy Versus Abstraction In Twentieth-Century German And Russian Aesthetics, Thorsten Botz-Bornstein Jun 2007

Empathy Versus Abstraction In Twentieth-Century German And Russian Aesthetics, Thorsten Botz-Bornstein

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper, "Empathy versus Abstraction in Twentieth-Century German and Russian Aesthetics," Thorsten Botz-Bornstein argues that Alexander Koyré has shown how the crisis of belief incited by Bacon, Montaigne, Pascal, and Descartes made that "man lost his place in the world." The German term Einfühlung (empathy) played an important role in the transformation of the relationship between the person and his/her world at the moment when modern science began to emerge. Botz-Bornstein examines the conceptual links between empathy and Verfremdung (in Russian ostranenie), and style by showing how German and Russian literary critics of the 1910s attempted to retrieve the …
