Diagnosis Of An Aneurysm By Musculoskeletal Ultrasonography: A Casereport, Chih-Yang Wu, Jeng-Yi Shieh, Tyng-Guey Wang, Wen-Shiang Chen, Chung-Li Wang, Yen-Ho Wang
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
High resolution musculoskeletal ultrasonography has been a comprehensive tool for differentiation of soft tissue mass. However, it is not commonly used as a standard examination in the diagnosis of an aneurysm. We present a case of a growing mass in the medial aspect of the left thigh status post internal fixation of periprosthetic fracture. Initial examination with a 10 MHz linear array probe revealed a blurred hypoechoic lesion at a depth of 5 cm. After switching to a 7.5 MHz curve-linear array probe, we found a well-defined, ovoid, hypoechoic cystic lesion with posterior enhancement. In color Doppler mode, a half-blue/half-red …

Autonomic Dysreflexia In Ankylosing Spondylitis With Double Spinal Cord Injuries: A Casereport, Shu-Chun Huang, Wun-Jhong Tsai, Shih-Wei Chou, Chin-Man Wang, Alice M. K. Wong
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
This 54-year-old man underlying ankylosing spondylitis suffered from double spinal cord injuries with traumatic C6/7 dislocation and a neglected L1 vertebral body fracture which progressed to transverse fracture three weeks after the injury, acting as a powerful precipitant to autonomic dysreflexia. The dysreflexic symptoms happened at least three times when he practiced sitting during mat exercise and ameliorated soon by virtue of lying down. Compared with the previous record checked three weeks ago, neurologic examination revealed alteration of sensory level and loss of deep anal sensation. The patient received L1 laminectomy as well as T12 and L2 transpedicle screws fixation, …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Urea cycle disorder (UCD) is one of inborn error diseases. Citrullinemia is the most common disease (1/57000) among them, followed by argininosuccinic acidemia (ASA) (1/70000). The common characteristic of UCD is hyperammonemia induced by the abnormal liver function. Common symptoms at the onset of diseases include altered consciousness, respiratory insufficiency and seizures. Developmental delay, mental retardation, cerebral palsy, and learning disability are common findings in long-term follow-ups. In this report, we give an account of a patient with ASA. Besides the aforementioned symptoms and long-term sequelae, this patient also has the problem of ataxia. However, the patient's conditions and developments …

Characteristics And Dyes Biodegradation Potential Of Crude Lignolytic Enzymes From White-Rot Fungus Crepidotus Variabilis Isolated In Coastal Tanzania, G. Y. S. Gys Mtui
Tanzania Journal of Science
Lignocellulosic enzymes from Crepidotus variabilis collected from mangrove forests of coastal Tanzania were investigated by using standard methods, and their ability to degrade aromatic compounds were elucidated. The fungal crude enzyme filtrates had maximum laccase (Lac), lignin peroxidase (LiP) and manganese peroxidase (MnP) activities of 70 U/mL, 16 U/mL and 8, U/mL respectively. The crude enzyme extracts were able to oxidize rhemazol brilliant blue-R (RBB-R) dye, phenol, "-naphthol and pyrogallol. Also, they could remove up to 58% and 92% color from raw textile effluent and aromatic dyes, respectively, after 14 days of incubation at 30ºC and pH 4.5. Desalted and …

Recent events related to the planning and execution of the war in Iraq, most notably the perceived 2003 "firing" of then Army Chief of Staff Eric Shinseki, have raised concerns over the effect of Executive Branch dominance of the military and how that dominance impacts the ability of Congress to obtain timely and important information. Such actions, perceived to discourage members of the military from providing candid views to Congress when they differ with the Administration, even if implied instead of express, strike at the very core of the founder's intent to balance military power within the national government. The …
Temperature Dependence Of A Macrobending Edge Filter Based On A High-Bend Loss Fiber, Pengfei Wang, Ginu Rajan, Yuliya Semenova, Gerald Farrell
Temperature Dependence Of A Macrobending Edge Filter Based On A High-Bend Loss Fiber, Pengfei Wang, Ginu Rajan, Yuliya Semenova, Gerald Farrell
Articles
The temperature dependence of a macrobending bare fiber based edge filter is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The fiber used is a high bend loss fiber, type 1060XP. The experimental results show a good agreement with the proposed theoretical model over a temperature range from 0 to 80oC. It is shown that the strong temperature dependence of a high-bend loss fiber has a significant influence on the performance of a fiber edge filter used in a wavelength measurement application. However it is also concluded that such a temperature dependent performance can be beneficially utilized in a fiber temperature sensing application.

Odometry Correction Of A Mobile Robot Using A Range-Finding Laser, Thomas Epton
Odometry Correction Of A Mobile Robot Using A Range-Finding Laser, Thomas Epton
All Theses
Two methods for improving odometry using a pan-tilt range-finding laser is considered. The first method is a one-dimensional model that uses the laser with a sliding platform. The laser is used to determine how far the platform has moved along a rail. The second method is a two-dimensional model that mounts the laser to a mobile robot. In this model, the laser is used to improve the odometry of the robot. Our results show that the one-dimensional model proves our basic geometry is correct, while the two-dimensional model improves the odometry, but does not completely correct it.
Periodontal Disease And Diabetes: Knowledge And Attitudes Assessment Project
Periodontal Disease And Diabetes: Knowledge And Attitudes Assessment Project
Florida Public Health Review
There is a growing body of evidence showing that periodontal disease is more prevalent among diabetic patients than among non-diabetic patients. This same evidence also shows that the more poorly controlled the diabetes, the more severe the periodontal disease. However, it is unclear if the increased risk of periodontal disease is known by the diabetes community. Two hundred diabetic patients voluntarily participated in an intervention to increase the diabetic patient’s knowledge of and attitudes toward periodontal disease. The study was conducted at the University of Miami-Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) during the month of May 2005. The purpose …

An Optical Model For Heat And Salt Budget Estimation For Shallow Seas, Hari Warrior, Kendall L. Carder
An Optical Model For Heat And Salt Budget Estimation For Shallow Seas, Hari Warrior, Kendall L. Carder
Marine Science Faculty Publications
The effects of the underwater light field on heat-budget calculations for shallow waters are developed and applied for the region of Bahamas. Most of the general circulation models use a simplified heat budget scheme based on Jerlov water types, and do not account for optical bottom effects. by optical bottom effect, we mean the bottom absorption and reflection of the short-wave radiation, which in turn affects the thermal stratification and heat exchange with the atmosphere. In this paper, this optical bottom effect is added to a 3D turbulence model (a 1D model called GOTM is coupled to a 3D model …

This paper documents various unresolved issues in using surface temperature trends as a metric for assessing global and regional climate change. A series of examples ranging from errors caused by temperature measurements at a monitoring station to the undocumented biases in the regionally and globally averaged time series are provided. The issues are poorly understood or documented and relate to micrometeorological impacts due to warm bias in nighttime minimum temperatures, poor siting of the instrumentation, effect of winds as well as surface atmospheric water vapor content on temperature trends, the quantification of uncertainties in the homogenization of surface temperature data, …

Optical Estimation Of Auroral Ion Upflow: Theory, M. Zettergren, J. L. Semeter, P. L. Blelly, M. Diaz
Publications
This work presents a systematic analysis of optical emissions related to auroral ion upflow. Optical intensities and field‐aligned ion transport are computed for a set of monoenergetic incident electron beams using a combined fluid‐kinetic model. The kinetic portion models the energetic particle transport with a multiple stream approach and provides ionization, excitation, and heating rates to an eight‐moment fluid model of the ionosphere, which then calculates the resulting ion upflow. The analysis is used to develop a technique for estimating upward ion flux from photometric measurements at five discrete wavelengths: 427.8 nm, 557.7 nm, 630.0 nm, 732 nm, and 844.6 …

Modeling Aboveground Biomass Of Tamarix Ramosissima In The Arkansas River Basin Of Southeastern Colorado, Usa, Paul Evangelista, Sunil Kumar, Thomas J. Stohlgren, Alycia W. Crall, Gregory J. Newman
Western North American Naturalist
Predictive models of aboveground biomass of nonnative Tamarix ramosissima of various sizes were developed using destructive sampling techniques on 50 individuals and four 100- m2 plots. Each sample was measured for average height (m) of stems and canopy area (m2) prior to cutting, drying, and weighing. Five competing regression models (P < 0.05) were developed to estimate aboveground biomass of T. ramosissima using average height and/or canopy area measurements and were evaluated using Akaike's Information Criterion corrected for small sample size (AICc). Our best model (AICc = −148.69, ΔAICc = 0) successfully predicted T. ramosissima aboveground biomass (R2 = 0.97) …

Diatom Species Composition And Ecology Of The Animas River Watershed, Colorado, Usa, Gerald V. Sgro, John B. Poole, Jeffery R. Johansen
Western North American Naturalist
The diatom flora of selected sites in the Animas River Watershed, San Juan County, Colorado, was studied. Eighty diatom taxa were identified from 10 sites: 8 sites on the Animas River and 1 site each on the Cement and Cascade tributaries. The sample diatom abundance was dominated by Achnanthidium minutissimum, Encyonema silesiacum, Aulacoseira distans, Hannaea arcus, and Diatoma mesodon. The presence of teratologic specimens of Fragilaria and Achnanthidium in the samples indicated the possibility of metals contamination. Diatom diversity was low and Lange-Bertalot pollution index scores indicated little organic pollution evidenced from diatom composition. There …
