Conjuring Her Self: Hermione's Self-Determination In Harry Potter, Gwendolyn Limbach Oct 2007

Conjuring Her Self: Hermione's Self-Determination In Harry Potter, Gwendolyn Limbach

Honors College Theses

In most classic children’s literature, a female protagonist, though the center of the story, does not exhibit agency; rather, power “arrives in the form of rescue” and is acted upon her by a male hero (Sweeney). Recent feminist children’s literature, such as The Princess and the Admiral and The Ordinary Princess, empowers the protagonist to be her own rescuer. J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series may not fit the expected mold of feminist children’s literature, but one of the main characters, Hermione Granger, is certainly the books’ only girl feminist. Hermione separates herself from other models of girlhood, such as the …

Induction Of Insulin Secretion In Engineered Liver Cells By Nitric Oxide, Latha Muniappan, Sabire Özcan Oct 2007

Induction Of Insulin Secretion In Engineered Liver Cells By Nitric Oxide, Latha Muniappan, Sabire Özcan

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus results from an autoimmune destruction of the pancreatic beta cells, which produce insulin. The lack of insulin leads to chronic hyperglycemia and secondary complications, such as cardiovascular disease. The currently approved clinical treatments for diabetes mellitus often fail to achieve sustained and optimal glycemic control. Therefore, there is a great interest in the development of surrogate beta cells as a treatment for type 1 diabetes. Normally, pancreatic beta cells produce and secrete insulin only in response to increased blood glucose levels. However in many cases, insulin secretion from non-beta cells engineered to produce insulin occurs …

Chromospherically Active Stars. Xxvi. The Double-Lined Late-Type Binary Hd 19485 = Wz Arietis, Francis C. Fekel, Charles Thomas Bolton Oct 2007

Chromospherically Active Stars. Xxvi. The Double-Lined Late-Type Binary Hd 19485 = Wz Arietis, Francis C. Fekel, Charles Thomas Bolton

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We have used spectroscopic observations to determine the orbital elements and some basic properties of the double-lined spectroscopic binary HD 19485 = WZ Ari. The orbital period is 6.247854 days, and the orbit is circular. The G5 V primary and K0 V secondary are chromospherically active. One star or possibly both are synchronously rotating. Based on the Hipparcos parallax and the magnitude differences derived in this work, we find that both components are approximately 1 mag above the zero-age main sequence, a result that is inconsistent with the assumption that the components are coeval. We discuss some possible solutions to …

Use Of Ellipsometry And Surface Plasmon Resonance In Monitoring Thin Film Deposition Or Removal From A Substrate Surface, John A. Woollam, Blaine D. Johs, Thomas E. Tiwald, Martin M. Liphardt, James D. Welch Oct 2007

Use Of Ellipsometry And Surface Plasmon Resonance In Monitoring Thin Film Deposition Or Removal From A Substrate Surface, John A. Woollam, Blaine D. Johs, Thomas E. Tiwald, Martin M. Liphardt, James D. Welch

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Improved methodology for monitoring deposition or removal of material to or from a process and/or Wittness substrate Which demonstrates a negative e1 at some Wave length. The method involves detection of changes in P-polarized electromagnetism ellipsometric DELTA at SPR Resonance Angle-of-lncidence (A01) to monitor deposition of and/or removal of minute amounts of materials onto, or from, said process and/or Witness substrate. The methodology can optionally monitor ellipsometric PS1, and involves simultaneously or sequentially applying non-P-polarized electromagnetism at the same angle of incidence, or electromagnetic radiation of any polarization at a different angle-of-incidence and Wavelength to the process or Witt ness …

Reactive Probes For Two Photon Fluorescent Imaging And Sensing., Kevin Belfield, Katherine Schafer

UCF Patents

Two-photon flourescence imaging is fast becoming the premier technique for nondestructive, 3-D imaging in the biological and biomedical research fields, both in living and nonliving systems. This technology currently used in two-photon flourescene imaging emanates from conventional flourescence microscopy.

Measurement Of The Pp̅→ Tt̅ + X Production Cross Section At √S = 1.96 Tev In The Fully Hadronic Decay Channel, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration Oct 2007

Measurement Of The Pp̅→ Tt̅ + X Production Cross Section At √S = 1.96 Tev In The Fully Hadronic Decay Channel, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration

Gregory Snow Publications

A measurement of the top quark pair production cross section in proton antiproton collisions at an interaction energy of √s= 1.96 TeV is presented. This analysis uses 405 ± 25 pb-1 of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Fully hadronic tt̅ decays with final states of six or more jets are separated from the multijet background using secondary vertex tagging and a neural network. The tt̅ cross section is measured as σ tt̅= 4.5-1.9+2.0(stat)-1.1+1.4(syst) ± 0.3(lumi) pb for a top quark mass of mt …
