Fabrication Of Dna Microarrays On Poly (Methylmethacrylate) Substrates For Biomolecular Reporting, Catherine N. Situma Jan 2007

Fabrication Of Dna Microarrays On Poly (Methylmethacrylate) Substrates For Biomolecular Reporting, Catherine N. Situma

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

DNA microarrays require the use of substrates with well-established surface modification / probe attachment chemistries. Glass/quartz have been widely adopted as typical support materials since their surface modification chemistries which involve the use of siloxane –based chemistries have been widely studied however; these chemistry is susceptible to hydrolytic cleavage especially at high or low pH values. Recently, polymers have been sought as alternative microarray support materials but their surface modification strategies are not well characterized compared to glass. This report will entail surface photo-modification of PMMA polymer substrates by UV irradiation which produces functional scaffolds of carboxylic groups that allow …

Predicting Water Quality Effects On Bay Anchovy (Anchoa Mitchilli) Growth And Production In Chesapeake Bay: Linking Water Quality And Individual-Based Fish Models, Aaron Thomas Adamack Jan 2007

Predicting Water Quality Effects On Bay Anchovy (Anchoa Mitchilli) Growth And Production In Chesapeake Bay: Linking Water Quality And Individual-Based Fish Models, Aaron Thomas Adamack

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Water quality in the Chesapeake Bay and the Patuxent River has decreased since the 1950s due to an increase in nutrient loadings. Increased nutrient loads have caused an increase in the extent and duration of hypoxic conditions. Restoration via large-scale reductions in nutrient loadings is now underway. How reducing nutrient loadings will affect water quality is well predicted; however the effect on fish is generally unknown as most water quality models do not include trophic levels higher than zooplankton. I combined two water quality models with bay anchovy models (Anchoa mitchilli) to examine the effects of changes in nutrient loadings …

Computing And Analyzing Gravitational Radiation In Black Hole Simulations Using A New Multi-Block Approach To Numerical Relativity, Ernst Nils Dorband Jan 2007

Computing And Analyzing Gravitational Radiation In Black Hole Simulations Using A New Multi-Block Approach To Numerical Relativity, Ernst Nils Dorband

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Numerical simulations of Kerr black holes are presented and the excitation of quasinormal modes is studied in detail. Issues concerning the extraction of gravitational waves from numerical space-times and analyzing them in a systematic way are discussed. A new multi-block infrastructure for solving first order symmetric hyperbolic time dependent partial differential equations is developed and implemented in a way that stability is guaranteed for arbitrary high order accurate numerical schemes. Multi-block methods make use of several coordinate patches to cover a computational domain. This provides efficient, flexible and very accurate numerical schemes. Using this code, three dimensional simulations of perturbed …

Wind Loads For Petrochemical Structures, Samuel Amoroso Jan 2007

Wind Loads For Petrochemical Structures, Samuel Amoroso

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Techniques currently available to practicing engineers for estimating wind loads for petrochemical structures have little theoretical or experimental basis. This dissertation research is an effort to expand the understanding of wind effects on petrochemical and other, similar structures. Petrochemical structures introduce geometric scales into wind tunnel model simulations below what are common for enclosed structures. Wind tunnel experiments were performed to help determine whether this will introduce problems in achieving dynamic similarity between models and prototypes. The experiments did not reveal any clear indication that petrochemical structures cannot be modeled in wind tunnels at scales similar to those used for …

Anywhere But Here: Race And Empire In The Mabo Decision, Emma Cunliffe Jan 2007

Anywhere But Here: Race And Empire In The Mabo Decision, Emma Cunliffe

All Faculty Publications

The High Court of Australia's decision in Mabo v. Queensland (No.2) is among the most widely known and controversial decisions the Court has yet delivered. In Mabo, a majority of the Court recognised a common law right to native title subject to certain criteria. In this article, I explore the competing visions of legal history that are implicit within Brennan J's leading judgment and Dawson J's dissent. In particular, I discuss the ways in which both of these judgments render an incomplete and contradictory documentary record more coherent than it really is. Suggesting that neither judgment manages to escape the …

Somatic Computationalism: Damasio's Clever Error, Christopher D. Pope Jan 2007

Somatic Computationalism: Damasio's Clever Error, Christopher D. Pope

LSU Master's Theses

Neuroscientist Antonio Damasio wrote a book entitled DESCARTES’ ERROR (1994) in order to address popular misconceptions about the mind, particularly those which relate to Cartesian philosophy. One of the author’s major goals for the book is to argue that emotion contributes to reason, that emotion is in fact necessary for rational thought to occur. In order to link emotion to reason, Damasio proposes a theory of mind which explains several mental functions in terms of neurological representations. Consciousness, reason, instinct and emotion all occur because the brain forms representations of the subject’s body and of the world in which the …

Leveraging Lean Process Improvement Methodology To Promote Economic And Environmental Sustainability: Obstacles And Opportunities, Jennifer Doman

Theses

We are on the verge of a paradigm shift in the regulatory community in the United States. The EPA is slowly moving away from command and control to a more collaborative structure, and Lean process improvement is one of the primary catalysts of change. A significant percentage of American enterprises have some experience with Lean methods, and the EPA and others believe that Lean can be leveraged to promote environmental benefits while still delivering valuable business benefits, such as increased productivity and reduced costs. This research explores both the opportunities available for businesses today, and the current obstacles encountered when …

Anomaly-Based Botnet Detection For 10 Gb/S Networks, Jonathon Donaldson Jan 2007

Anomaly-Based Botnet Detection For 10 Gb/S Networks, Jonathon Donaldson

Theses

Current network data rates have made it increasingly difficult for cyber security specialists to protect the information stored on private systems. Greater throughput not only allows for higher productivity, but also creates a “larger” security hole that may allow numerous malicious applications (e.g. bots) to enter a private network. Software-based intrusion detection/prevention systems are not fast enough for the massive amounts of traffic found on 1 Gb/s and 10 Gb/s networks to be fully effective. Consequently, businesses accept more risk and are forced to make a conscious trade-off between threat and performance. A solution that can handle a much broader …

How To Rewrite Torah: The Case For Proto-Sectarian Ideology In The Reworked Pentateuch (4qrp), Roger S. Nam Jan 2007

How To Rewrite Torah: The Case For Proto-Sectarian Ideology In The Reworked Pentateuch (4qrp), Roger S. Nam

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

This study challenges the initial categorization of the Reworked Pentateuch (4Q364-4Q367) as another non-sectarian textual witness to the Torah. A close analysis of the manuscripts suggests that certain unaligned readings likely ret1ect some of the sectarian ideas of the community. Other variants evoke both content and ideology of the authoritative "Rewritten Bible" documents, the Temple Scroll and Jubilees. These characteristics imply that 4QRP contains deliberate reworking of biblical material that is in line with sectarian ideology, in contrast to a mere mechanical copying of the text. Though the scroll may not be strictly sectarian, at the very least, it is …

Using "Hybrid" Effectively In Christian Higher Education, Daniel L. Brunner Jan 2007

Using "Hybrid" Effectively In Christian Higher Education, Daniel L. Brunner

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

Hybrid is just one of a number of terms used for the convergence of face-to-face and online learning, At the University of Central Florida (UCF) they are called mixed mode courses, In the corporate world the most common language used for hybrid is blended learning, Blended learning, says Bob Mosher, is about using multiple learning modalities, which include, but are not limited to, the Web.7 The blended learning term is also being used more frequently within academic circles,8 Because of the inconsistency in how blended learning is employed, though, and because our goal is not to describe learning in general …

Representing The Object Of Controversy: The Case Of The Molecular Clock, Michael Dietrich Jan 2007

Representing The Object Of Controversy: The Case Of The Molecular Clock, Michael Dietrich

Dartmouth Scholarship

Through a case study of the controversies surrounding the molecular clock, this paper examines the role of visual representation in the dynamics of scientific controversies. Representations of the molecular clock themselves became objects of controversy and so were not a means for closure. Instead visual representations of the molecular clock became tools for the further articulation of an ongoing controversy.

An Examination Of The Expectations And Experiences Of Beginning Teachers Of The Gifted, Kimberly Nicole Mcglonn Jan 2007

An Examination Of The Expectations And Experiences Of Beginning Teachers Of The Gifted, Kimberly Nicole Mcglonn

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Researchers in the field of gifted education have pointed to the need for deeper understanding of the complex expectations and experiences of beginning teachers of the gifted (Pollak, 1996; Hanninen, 1988), that is, teachers of the gifted who have less than three years’ experience teaching gifted learners. Further, several important questions remain unanswered regarding the structure/content of preparation for pre-service teachers of the gifted (Joffe, 2001; Chan, 2001; Mills, 2003; Hansen and Feldhusen, 1994; Johnsen, 2004). Finally, the field of gifted education would benefit from insight into the experiences of beginning teachers of the gifted, particularly insight from a first-hand …

Reinventing The Sword: A Cultural Comparison Of The Development Of The Sword In Response To The Advent Of Firearms In Spain And Japan, Charles Edward Ethridge

LSU Master's Theses

Swords have been used throughout history as weapons of war, as symbols of power and wealth and as national and religious icons. Unlike other weapons however, the sword did not simply fade into the background as technological improvements caused the martial value to lessen. The primary purpose of this paper is to look at the development of the sword as an object of art, specifically in the countries of Spain and Japan, after the invention of the firearm. A brief history of the development of the sword from the earliest manifestations through the Iron Age is provided as way of …

The Effects Of Recq, Uvrd, And Recd Mutants Of Deinococcus Radiodurans On Resistance To Dna Damaging Agents, Stephannie Gauthier Ruiz Jan 2007

The Effects Of Recq, Uvrd, And Recd Mutants Of Deinococcus Radiodurans On Resistance To Dna Damaging Agents, Stephannie Gauthier Ruiz

LSU Master's Theses

The genes encoding the putative nuclease RecD and the helicase RecQ were deleted from Deinococcus radiodurans R1 and replaced with constructs conferring hygromycin or spectinomycin resistance. The ÄrecD and ÄrecQ strains were found to be similar to wild type R1 strain in resistance to gamma irradiation. In contrast to the single mutant strains, the ÄuvrD, ÄrecQ double mutant was found to be extremely radiation sensitive, indicating that these proteins share a complementary activity needed for radioresistance. ÄrecD mutants have higher transformation efficiencies than the wild type R1 strains, suggesting an association of RecD with nucleases that degrade single stranded DNA. …

Political Institutions, Judicial Review, And Private Property: A Comparative Institutional Analysis, Daniel H. Cole Jan 2007

Political Institutions, Judicial Review, And Private Property: A Comparative Institutional Analysis, Daniel H. Cole

Articles by Maurer Faculty

Since Madison, jurists of all ideological stripes have more or less casually presumed that constitutional judicial review is absolutely necessary to protect private property rights against over-regulation by political bodies. During the twentieth century, this presumption led directly to the institution of regulatory takings doctrine.

Recently, the economist William Fischel and the legal scholar Neil Komesar have raised important questions about, respectively, the utility and the sufficiency of constitutional judicial review for protecting private property. This article supports their arguments with theoretical and historical evidence that constitutional judicial review (1) is not strictly necessary for protecting private property rights, and …

Individual And Organizational Differences In Organizational Commitment And Escalation Of Commitment, Molly J. Russ Jan 2007

Individual And Organizational Differences In Organizational Commitment And Escalation Of Commitment, Molly J. Russ

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The present study extended the literature on employee commitment and escalation bias to include individual and organizational difference factors. Escalation bias refers to the tendency for a decision-maker to become overly committed to the decision focus (e.g., the organization, supervisor, an ongoing project) even in light of negative feedback regarding the person’s or project’s performance (Moon, 2001; Staw, 1976). An escalation of commitment to a losing course of action is viewed as risky and often costly behavior to organizations. The main purpose of the present study was to identify factors that may predispose persons to escalate their commitment. While using …

Protocol Development For Pro-Active Emergency Responses By Veterinary Clinics And Hospitals, Laura Marie Basirico Jan 2007

Protocol Development For Pro-Active Emergency Responses By Veterinary Clinics And Hospitals, Laura Marie Basirico

LSU Master's Theses

The Gulf Coast hurricanes of 2005 necessitated the development of a guidance document concerning emergency preparedness and response for veterinary clinics and hospitals. The aftermaths of the largest natural disasters in United States' history, namely Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, brought to light the need for a protocol designed specifically for veterinarians and veterinary practitioners. Disaster management information was synthesized and modified to be subject-specific for the veterinary community. This synthesis resulted in the creation of the Veterinary Emergency Preparedness and Response (VEPR) manual and website. Two types of data were collected to develop the emergency protocol; interviews with veterinarians and …
