Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Four platinum(II) and 4 platinum(IV) complexes with the structures [PtL_2Cl_2], [PtL_2I_2], [PtL_2Cl_4], and [PtL_2Cl_2(OH)_2] (L = 5(6)-non/orchloro-substituted-2-hydroxymethylbenzimidazole ligands as ``non-leaving groups''), respectively, were synthesized and characterized by their elemental analyses, and IR and ^1H-NMR spectra. In vitro cytotoxic activities of the platinum(II) and platinum(IV) complexes were tested against the human MCF-7 (breast cancer) and HeLa (cervix cancer) cell lines using the cell culture method. In general, the platinum(II) complexes were more active than the corresponding platinum(IV) complexes. The complexes, which were found to be less active than cisplatin, exhibited cyctotoxicity comparable to carboplatin on the human MCF-7 and HeLa cell …

A New Approach To Furan-Containing Macrolactones, Christoph Schmidt, Ruth Messmer, Franz Bracher, Jurgen Krauss

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Furan and tetrahydrofuran heterocycles are part of many natural products, like the Galerucella pheromone, furano epothilones, bipinnatin, and amphidinolides. This paper describes a short and efficient synthetic approach to furan-containing macrolactones in 4 steps, including as key steps a Sonogashira reaction and an olefin metathesis. The resulting compounds were tested at the National Cancer Institute for their cytotoxicity, but did not exhibit significant cytotoxicity in the human tumour cell line screen.

An Electrochemical Dna Biosensor For The Detection Of Dna Damage Caused By Radioactive Iodine And Technetium, Pinar Kara, Kağan Dağdevi̇ren, Mehmet Özsöz Jan 2007

An Electrochemical Dna Biosensor For The Detection Of Dna Damage Caused By Radioactive Iodine And Technetium, Pinar Kara, Kağan Dağdevi̇ren, Mehmet Özsöz

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A DNA damage process by radioactive iodine (I-131) and technetium (Tc-99m) is described. The procedure relies on a label-free electrochemical DNA biosensor. Fish sperm double stranded DNA was immobilized onto a carbon paste electrode (CPE) by electro deposition and the changes to the guanine oxidation signal were observed upon exposure to radioactive I-131 and Tc-99m by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The changes to the signal of guanine after exposure to therapeutic doses of Tc-99m and I-131 showed conformational changes in DNA molecules.

Development Of A New Set Of Additive Parameters For The Estimation Of Geometrical Distortion Of Cycloalkanes From C-13 Nmr Chemical Shifts, Emad A. S. Al-Hyali Jan 2007

Development Of A New Set Of Additive Parameters For The Estimation Of Geometrical Distortion Of Cycloalkanes From C-13 Nmr Chemical Shifts, Emad A. S. Al-Hyali

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A previous model for the calculation of C-13 chemical shifts is modified by replacement of 3 parameters representing the p-character of carbon atom in cyclic systems with a single parameter aiming for the development of a new set of parameters with a wide range of application for the calculation of C-13 NMR chemical shifts. The considered systems are cyclohexanes, trans decalins, and a number of hypothetical polycyclic 6-member ring hydrocarbons. The developed parameters include a combination of quantum mechanical and statistical methods. They are based on 2 factors: through bond (electronic) effect represented by the partial electronic charge on the …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Multidentate N-ligands (Schiff bases) were prepared by the condensation of 2-acetylpyridine or 2-benzoylpyridine, and 1,2-diaminoethane or 1,6-diaminohexane (2:1 ratio) in ethanol. These ligands were reacted with Mo(CO)_6 to obtain dinuclear metal tetracarbonyl compounds. Both terminal amine groups were seen to form imines from the reaction of mono-ketones with diamines in 2:1 or 1:1 ratios. The structures of these ligands and metal complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, and FT-IR, ^1H-NMR, ^{13}C-NMR, and LC-MS spectral techniques. N,N'-bis[1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethylidene]ethane-1, 2-diamine, which was obtained by the reaction of 2-acetylpyridine and 1,2-diaminoethane, was also characterized by single crystal X-ray structure analysis. The crystal packing is …

Characterization And Co Oxidation Activity Studies Of Co-Based Catalysts, Fi̇li̇z Balikçi, Çi̇ğdem Güldür

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Cobalt oxide based catalysts were developed for carbon monoxide oxidation at low temperature. The catalysts were prepared by co-precipitation and calcined at 200 °C. Several techniques were used to characterize the catalysts, such as X-ray diffractometer system, N_2 physisorption measurements, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Carbon monoxide oxidation studies were carried out to investigate the relation between the characteristic properties of the catalysts and the catalytic activity. Catalytic activity measurements were studied from room temperature to 200 °C, using a feed composition of 1% CO, 21% O_2, and remaining He. X-ray studies showed that the catalysts have …

A Mechanistic Approach To Elucidate Ethanol Electro-Oxidation, Ni̇yazi̇ Alper Tapan Jan 2007

A Mechanistic Approach To Elucidate Ethanol Electro-Oxidation, Ni̇yazi̇ Alper Tapan

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

In order to elucidate the mechanism of ethanol oxidation, a simple cylindrical diffusion-surface reaction was developed on a platinum disk electrode. An ethanol electro-oxidation mechanism was proposed, in which electrochemical reactions proceed without adsorption of any electro-oxidation products (C2 type) on the surface. After the simulation of the proposed mechanism, it was seen that the model can explain ethanol electro-oxidation behavior without any surface CO formation. The simulation of the mechanism indicated that the formation of acetaldehyde through the oxidation of bulk ethanol is the rate determining step between 0.6 and 0.75 V vs. RHE. After 0.75 V vs. RHE, …

Shifting Discourse In College Teaching, Winston Gittens Jan 2007

Shifting Discourse In College Teaching, Winston Gittens

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The pedagogical efficacy of traditional approaches to teaching that involve direct instruction in a subject-centered approach is being questioned constantly in higher education. Thus, this paper examines the shifting discourse in college teaching that emphasizes student learning and excellence in teaching, including implications resulting from this shift. The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) is one of the models engendering this discursive shift. In addition to addressing the implications of this shift, this paper is meant to provoke more dialogue and praxis to advance the cause of pedagogical methodologies that promote student learning and teaching effectiveness. Moreover, the bigger picture …

The Clinical Utility Of Categorical And Dimensional Subclassification Of Schizophrenia: An Investigation Using Prototypic And Nonprototypic Cases, Megan A. Hasenwinkel Jan 2007

The Clinical Utility Of Categorical And Dimensional Subclassification Of Schizophrenia: An Investigation Using Prototypic And Nonprototypic Cases, Megan A. Hasenwinkel

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The heterogeneity of schizophrenia and how best to delineate subtypes has been a problem since schizophrenia was first recognized. Limitations with the current subtypes of schizophrenia include low temporal stability, poor interrater reliability, lack of support for validity, and frequent use of the "undifferentiated" subtype. As an alternative, researchers have proposed dimensional models for subclassification of schizophrenia. These include Crow's Type I/Type II (positive symptoms/negative symptoms), Nicholson and Neufeld's severity of disorder/severity of symptoms model, the three dimension model (negative, disorganized, psychotic) proposed in the DSM-IV, as well as lesser-known four and five dimension models. One important criterion for evaluating …

Criminal Jumping On And Off The Curb - Discretion And The Idea Of An Impartial And Independent Police Force, W. Wesley Pue Jan 2007

Criminal Jumping On And Off The Curb - Discretion And The Idea Of An Impartial And Independent Police Force, W. Wesley Pue

All Faculty Publications

This paper presents a commentary on the idea of independence of the police, arguing that notions of independence are complicated considerably when the reality of police discretion is taken into account. The notion of colourability is identified as central (where goals not unlawful in themselves are pursued for unlawful reasons - eg. to vicitimize one's political foes) as is the possibility of police powers being deployed lawfully in the strict sense, but in a fashion that is nonetheless constitutionally improper.

The Problem Of Official Discretion In Anti-Terrorism Law: Comment On Khawajah, W. Wesley Pue, Robert Russo Jan 2007

The Problem Of Official Discretion In Anti-Terrorism Law: Comment On Khawajah, W. Wesley Pue, Robert Russo

All Faculty Publications

This paper assesses the first judicial ruling on key provisions of the Anti Terrorism Act. Rutherford J.'s ruling struck down provisions creating a motive requirement in the definition of terrorist activity while upholding the overall structure of the act against challenges on the basis of overbreadth and vagueness. A fault-line divides the two sides of the ruling. On one side the court looked to the lived-experience of legal rules, concluding that including motive requirements would mislead officials in the direction of improper and unconstitutional racial or religious profiling. On the other side of the fault-line the court restricted itself to …

Assurance Services As A Substitute For Law In Global Commerce, Margaret M. Blair, Cynthia A. Williams, Li-Wen Lin Jan 2007

Assurance Services As A Substitute For Law In Global Commerce, Margaret M. Blair, Cynthia A. Williams, Li-Wen Lin

All Faculty Publications

In this article we examine the rapid emergence and expansion of a private-sector compliance and enforcement infrastructure that we believe may increasingly be providing a substitute for public and legal regulatory infrastructure in global commerce, especially in developing countries where rule of law is weak and court systems are absent or inadequate. This infrastructure is provided by a proliferation of performance codes and standards, and a rapidly-growing global army of privately-trained and authorized inspectors and certifiers that we call the "third-party assurance industry." The growth in the third party assurance business has been phenomenal in the last decade. The business …

Precedent Unbound? Contemporary Approaches To Precedent In Canada, Debra Parkes Jan 2007

Precedent Unbound? Contemporary Approaches To Precedent In Canada, Debra Parkes

All Faculty Publications

This paper examines some key aspects of the contemporary treatment of precedent in Canada, including consideration of the vertical convention of precedent (lower courts being bound by decisions of higher courts) and the horizontal convention of precedent (courts being willing and/or able to overrule or depart from decisions of the same court). On the latter topic of horizontal precedent, particular attention will be paid to three recent decisions of the Supreme Court of Canada, Ontario Court of Appeal, and Manitoba Court of Appeal respectively, which take a more functional and pragmatic approach to the issue and demonstrate a greater willingness …

A Prisoners' Charter? Reflections On Prisoner Litigation Under The Canadian Charter Of Rights And Freedoms, Debra Parkes Jan 2007

A Prisoners' Charter? Reflections On Prisoner Litigation Under The Canadian Charter Of Rights And Freedoms, Debra Parkes

All Faculty Publications

This paper examines over twenty years of prisoner litigation under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, beginning with a brief consideration of the social and political context for prisoners into which the Charter was entrenched in 1982, before moving on to consider a variety of successful and unsuccessful prisoners' Charter claims. The author notes some ways in which the impact of the Charter has been diminished at the prison walls, including through a lack of full and meaningful access by prisoners to courts or other means of independent review of prison decisions and conditions, as well as by the …

Privacy, Identity And Security, Benjamin J. Goold Jan 2007

Privacy, Identity And Security, Benjamin J. Goold

All Faculty Publications

This paper examines the relationship between security, surveillance, privacy and identity, both in the context of legislation such as the Anti-terrorism Act and the PATRIOT Act, and also in the light of ongoing changes in how that personal information is gathered, processed and used. It is argued that prevailing notions of privacy — and the legal frameworks that aim to protect privacy interests — are ill-suited to defending individuals from an increasingly sophisticated array of surveillance and data processing techniques, which enable information to be acquired and shared at almost zero-cost and which threaten to establish the ‘categorical identity’ as …

Hearing The Sexual Assault Complaints Of Women With Mental Disabilities: Consent, Capacity, And Mistaken Belief, Janine Benedet, Isabel Grant Jan 2007

Hearing The Sexual Assault Complaints Of Women With Mental Disabilities: Consent, Capacity, And Mistaken Belief, Janine Benedet, Isabel Grant

All Faculty Publications

Women with mental disabilities experience high rates of sexual assault. The authors trace the history of the criminal law's treatment of cases involving such acts in order to evaluate whether the substantive law of sexual assault is meeting the needs of this group of women. In particular, the authors focus on the legal issues of consent, capacity, and mistaken belief. The authors situate this discussion in the context of current debates in feminist and critical disability theory, grounding the theory in scholarly research on sexual assault of women with mental disabilities. In considering the law's treatment of sexual violence against …

Hearing The Sexual Assault Complaints Of Women With Mental Disabilities: Evidentiary And Procedural Issues, Janine Benedet Jan 2007

Hearing The Sexual Assault Complaints Of Women With Mental Disabilities: Evidentiary And Procedural Issues, Janine Benedet

All Faculty Publications

When a woman with a mental disability makes a complaint of sexual assault, she must confront a criminal trial process that was not designed in contemplation of her as a witness. The requirements of repeated testimony under oath and the ability to be cross-examined are not always well-suited to the particular needs and capacities of women with mental disabilities. These problems are magnified by the tendency to infantilize women with mental disabilities, thereby diminishing their credibility and depicting them as hypersexual when they engage in any sexual activity. These stereotypes also manifest themselves in the application of evidentiary rules relating …

Individualism And Collectivism In America: The Case Of Gun Ownership And Attitudes Toward Gun Control, Katarzyna Celinska Jan 2007

Individualism And Collectivism In America: The Case Of Gun Ownership And Attitudes Toward Gun Control, Katarzyna Celinska

Publications and Research

A number of sociologists and cultural psychologists claim that the United States is a predominantly individualistic country. This article uses a unidimensional index of individualism and collectivism to analyze one of the most debated sociopolitical issues in America: gun ownership and gun control. It tests the hypothesis that the widespread gun ownership in the United States and prevailing attitudes toward gun control represent competing individualistic and collectivistic cultural traditions, respectively. The findings indicate that the index is one of the predictors of gun ownership and of attitudes about gun permits.

Crime Volume And Law And Order Culture, Steven Stack, Liqun Cao, Amy Adamczyk Jan 2007

Crime Volume And Law And Order Culture, Steven Stack, Liqun Cao, Amy Adamczyk

Publications and Research

The literature on public opinion about crime and justice has neglected the exploration of macro‐ or community‐level influences on individual‐level attitudes. A key macrofactor that may be related to individual level attitudes is the volume of violent crime. High crime rates can facilitate the development of a culture of “law and order,” a response that may be a practical or instrumental attempt to control crime. The present paper tests the hypothesis that persons residing in nations marked by a high volume of crime will be more likely to adhere to elements of a law and order culture. It employs data …

Criminal Performances: Film, Autobiography, And Confession, Jessica Silbey Jan 2007

Criminal Performances: Film, Autobiography, And Confession, Jessica Silbey

Faculty Scholarship

This article questions the criminal justice emphasis on filmed confession as the superlative evidentiary proffer that promotes accuracy and minimizes unconstitutional coercion by comparing filmed confessions to autobiographical film. It suggests that analyzing filmed confessions as a kind of autobiographical film exposes helpful tensions between the law's reliance on confession as revealing the inner self and the literary and filmic conception of confession as constituting one self among many. Through a close examination of several filmed confessions along side an examination of the history of autobiographical writing and film, this article shows how filmed confessions do not reveal the truthfulness …

Comparative Evaluation Of Two Models Of Upqc For Suitable Interface To Enhance Power Quality, Malabika Basu, S. P. Das, Gopal Dubey Jan 2007

Comparative Evaluation Of Two Models Of Upqc For Suitable Interface To Enhance Power Quality, Malabika Basu, S. P. Das, Gopal Dubey

Articles

Majority of the dispersed generations from renewable energy sources are connected to the grid through power electronic interface, which introduce additional harmonics in the distribution systems. Research is being carried out to integrate active filtering with specific interface such that a common power quality (PQ) platform could be achieved. For generalized solution, a unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) could be the most comprehensive PQ protecting device for sensitive non-linear loads, which require quality input supply. Also, load current harmonic isolation needs to be ensured for maintaining the quality of the supply current. The present paper describes two control scheme models …
