Elastometric Sensing Using Higher Flexural Eigenmodes Of Microcantilevers, M. Spletzer, A. Raman, R. Reifenberger
Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We present a method to detect with high sensitivity the viscoelastic property changes of sensor coatings on microcantilever arrays due to radiation, analyte binding, or adsorption. The method uses higher order flexural eigenmodes to identify the location and magnitude of the nonuniform elasticity changes in the microcantilever coating. We demonstrate the method by monitoring the time evolution of resonance frequencies and Q factors of different flexural eigenmodes of microcantilevers functionalized with a small drop of a photosensitive polymer as it is exposed to ultraviolet radiation. The method is particularly well suited for measuring quantitatively the time varying viscoelastic properties of …

Application Of An Xmm-Newton Epic Monte Carlo Technique To Analysis And Interpretation Of Data For The Abell 1689, Rx J0658-55, And Centaurus Clusters Of Galaxies, K. Andersson, J. R. Peterson, G. Madejski
Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We propose a new Monte Carlo method to study extended X-ray sources with the European Photon Imaging Camera (EPIC) aboard XMM-Newton. The smoothed particle inference (SPI) technique, described in a companion paper, is applied here to the EPIC data for the clusters of galaxies Abell 1689, Centaurus, and RX J0658-55 (the "bullet cluster"). We aim to show the advantages of this method of simultaneous spectral and spatial modeling over traditional X-ray spectral analysis. In Abell 1689 we confirm our earlier findings about structure in the temperature distribution and produce a high-resolution temperature map. We also find a hint of velocity …
On The Radio/X-Ray Correlation In Microquasars, Y. Q. Xue, W. Cui
On The Radio/X-Ray Correlation In Microquasars, Y. Q. Xue, W. Cui
Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
Context. The broadband spectral energy distribution of microquasars has proven to be a valuable tool for assessing the roles of jets and accretion flows in microquasars, as well as the coupling between the two. The coupling might manifest itself observationally in the correlated radio and X-ray variabilities of a source. Such a radio/X-ray correlation has indeed been seen in several microquasars during the low-hard state and subsequently been claimed to be universal for all. If proven, the universal correlation would have profound implications on theoretical models. However, there is already observational evidence that suggests otherwise. Aims. In this paper, we …

Relations between the observed quantities for a beamed radio jet, which are the apparent transverse speed and the apparent luminosity (beta(app), L), and the intrinsic quantities, which are the Lorentz factor and the intrinsic luminosity (gamma, L-0), are investigated. The inversion from measured to intrinsic values is not unique, but approximate limits to gamma and L-0 can be found using probability arguments. Roughly half the sources in a flux density-limited, beamed sample have a value of gamma close to the measured value of beta(app). The methods are applied to observations of 119 AGN jets made with the VLBA at 15 …

We report on observations of the sky region around the unidentified TeV gamma-ray source (TeV J2032+ 4130) carried out with the Whipple Observatory 10 m atmospheric Cerenkov telescope for a total of 65.5 hr between 2003 and 2005. The standard two-dimensional analysis developed by the Whipple collaboration for a stand-alone telescope reveals an excess in the field of view at a pretrial significance level of 6.1 sigma. The measured position of this excess is alpha = 20(h)32(m)27(s), delta = 41 degrees 39'17" (J2000.0). The estimated integral flux for this gamma-ray source is about 8% of the Crab Nebula flux. The …

We report on multifrequency linear polarization monitoring of 15 active galactic nuclei containing highly relativistic jets with apparent speeds from similar to 4c to > 40c. The measurements were obtained at optical, 1 tam, and 3 mm wavelengths, and at 7 mm with the Very Long Baseline Array. The data show a wide range in degree of linear polarization among the sources, from < 1 % to > 30%, and interday polarization variability in individual sources. The polarization properties suggest separation of the sample into three groups with low, intermediate, and high variability of polarization in the core at 7 mm (LVP, IVP, and HVP, respectively). …

Modeling The Accretion Disk X-Ray Continuum Of Black Hole Candidates, G. Pszota, W. Cui
Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We critically examine issues associated with determining the fundamental properties of the black hole and the surrounding accretion disk in an X-ray binary based on modeling the disk X-ray continuum of the source. We base our work mainly on two XMM-Newton observations of GX 339-4, because they provided high-quality data at low energies ( below 1 keV), which are critical for reliably modeling the spectrum of the accretion disk. A key issue examined is the determination of the so-called "color correction factor,'' which is often empirically introduced to account for the deviation of the local disk spectrum from a blackbody …

The MOJAVE blazar sample consists of the 133 brightest, most compact radio-loud AGNs in the northern sky, and it is selected on the basis of VLBA 2 cm correlated flux density exceeding 1.5 Jy ( 2 Jy for declinations south of 0 degrees) at any epoch between 1994 and 2003. Since 1994 we have been gathering VLBA data on the sample to measure super-luminal jet speeds and to better understand the parsec-scale kinematics of AGN jets. We have obtained 1.4 GHz VLA A configuration data on 57 of these sources to investigate whether the extended luminosity of blazars is correlated …

Magnetic properties of single crystalline Ga1-xMnxS (x=0.09) have been measured near the spin-glass transition. No other III-VI DMS is currently known to exhibit a spin-glass transition for comparison with Ga1-xMnxS. Ga1-xMnxS (T-c=11.2 K) shows unexpected similarity to II-VI DMS Zn1-xMnxTe (T-c=20.8 K). For both systems, the quantity chi(nl)=-M-nl/H (where M-nl=M-total-M-linear) diverges as the temperature approaches the spin-glass transition temperature T-c from above. It also increases with applied field at temperatures just above T-c for both systems. The spin-glass transitions in both Ga1-xMnxS and Zn1-xMnxTe follow the same universal scaling function with the same critical exponent values (gamma=4.0 +/- 1.0 and …

Even though heavy construction equipment such as a crane or backhoe excavator, is used to perform the task of pipe laying in the trench, workers are required to be inside the trench to guide the excavation, pipe laying, and final alignment. Work place safety has become a major concern in the construction industry over the past few decades, and trench cave-ins have caused serious and often fatal injuries to workers in the United States. The Construction Automation and Robotics Laboratory(CARL) at North Carolina State University has developed an alternative which involves advanced new technology: the prototype robotic excavation and pipe …

While landfills are the predominant form of solid-waste disposal for municipalities in the U.S., people are objecting to the establishment of new landfills in their communities. Decreasing availability of land, worries about potential health problems and a growing concern for the environment have made the disposal of solid waste a challenge. This technology represents a safety improvement. There is no need for contaminated soil transportation and handling. The need for disposal landfills disappears. Any type of radioactively contaminated buried waste unit, which because of its high activity represents significant risk for exhumation and re-disposal, would be a potential application for …

Bone-Shaped Short Fiber Composite, Purdue Ect Team
ECT Fact Sheets Archive
Civil engineers use steel, fiberglass and other similar materials to increase concrete's strength and toughness, but using those materials often requires costly construction techniques. Short-wire reinforced concrete should become a favorite technology since the process is compatible with standard construction processes and the steel used for the bone-shaped fibers is relatively cheap. Researchers at Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory have discovered that enlarging the ends of small fibers mixed into concrete substantially increases the material's overall strength and toughness.

With limited funds destined to highway maintenance, the need to repair and maintain highways at the lowest cost possible has created a need for cost-effective ways to rehabilitate existing pavements in preference of reconstruction. Hot-In-Place-Asphalt-Recycling is defined as a process of correcting asphalt pavement surface distress by softening the existing surface with heat, mechanically removing the pavement surface, mixing with recycling agent, possibly adding virgin asphalt and/or aggregate and replace it on the pavement without removing the recycled material from the original pavement site.

Anovel experimental approach is developed for characterizing the performance of heat pipe wick structures. This approach simulates the actual operation of wick structures in a heat pipe. Open, partially submerged, sintered copper wicks of varying pore size are studied under the partially saturated conditions found in normal heat pipe operation. A vertical wick orientation, where the capillary lift is in opposition to gravity, is selected to test the wicks under the most demanding conditions. Mass transport measurements of the working fluid, in addition to the temperature field, are obtained for the porous wicks under the action of a discrete heat …

Knowledge of the B-s decay fraction of the Upsilon(5S) resonance, f(S), is important for B-s meson studies at the Upsilon(5S) energy. Using a data sample collected by the CLEO III detector at CESR consisting of 0.423 fb(-1) on the Upsilon(5S) resonance, 6.34 fb(-1) on the Upsilon(4S) and 2.32 fb(-1) in the continuum below the Upsilon(4S), we measure B(Upsilon(5S)->phi X)=(13.8 +/- 0.7(-1.5)(+2.3))% and B(Upsilon(4S)->phi X)=(7.1 +/- 0.1 +/- 0.6)%; the ratio of the two rates is (1.9 +/- 0.1(-0.2)(+0.3)). This is the first measurement of the phi meson yield from the Upsilon(5S). Using these rates, and a model dependent …

We present a new measurement of the B+ meson differential cross section d sigma/dp(T) at root s=1960 GeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 739 pb(-1) collected with the upgraded CDF detector (CDF II) at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. B+ candidates are reconstructed through the decay B+-> J/psi K+, with J/psi ->mu(+)mu(-). The integrated cross section for producing B+ mesons with p(T)>= 6 GeV/c and vertical bar y vertical bar <= 1 is measured to be 2.78 +/- 0.24 mu b.
Measurement Of The Ratios Of Branching Fractions B (B-S(0)-> D-S(-) Pi(+) Pi(+) Pi(-))/B(B-0 -> D- Pi(+) Pi(+) Pi(-)) And B(B-S(0) -> D-S(-) Pi(+))/B(B-0 -> D- Pi(+)), A. Abulencia, J. Adelman, T. Using 355 pb(-1) of data collected by the CDF II detector in p (p) over bar at collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron, we study the fully reconstructed hadronic decays B-(s)(0) -> D-(s)(-)pi(+) and B-(s)(0) -> D-(s)(-) pi(+)pi(+)pi(-). We present the first measurement of the ratio of branching fractions B(B-s(0) -> D-s(-) pi(+)pi(+)pi(-))/B(B-0 -> D-s(-) pi(+)pi(+)pi(-)) = 1.05 +/- 0.10(stat) +/- 0.22(syst). We also update our measurement of B(B-s(0) -> D-s(-)pi(+))/B(B-0 -> D-pi(+)) to 1.13 +/- 0.08(stat) +/- 0.23(syst), improving the statistical uncertainty by more than a factor of 2. We find B(B-s(0) -> D-s(-)pi(+)) …

We present the scaling properties of Lambda, Xi, and Omega in midrapidity Au+Au collisions at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at root s(NN)=200 GeV. The yield of multistrange baryons per participant nucleon increases from peripheral to central collisions more rapidly than that of Lambda, indicating an increase of the strange-quark density of the matter produced. The strange phase-space occupancy factor gamma(s) approaches unity for the most central collisions. Moreover, the nuclear modification factors of p, Lambda, and Xi are consistent with each other for 2 < p(T) < 5 GeV/c in agreement with a scenario of hadron formation from constituent quark degrees of freedom.

Piezoelectric fans have emerged as a viable cooling technology for the thermal management of electronic devices, owing to their low- power consumption, minimal noise emission, and small and configurable dimensions. Piezoelectric fans are investigated for application in the cooling of low-power electronics. Different experimental configurations are considered, and the effect of varying the fan amplitude, the distance between the fan and the heat source, the fan length, its frequency offset from resonance, and the fan offset from the center of the heat source are studied to assess the cooling potential of the fans. A design of experiments (DOE) analysis revealed …
