The Tropical Forest And Fire Emissions Experiment: Method Evaluation Of Volatile Organic Compound Emissions Measured By Ptr-Ms, Ftir, And Gc From Tropical Biomass Burning, T. G. Karl, Ted J. Christian, Robert J. Yokelson, Paulo Artaxo, Wei Min Hao, Alex Guenther Nov 2007

The Tropical Forest And Fire Emissions Experiment: Method Evaluation Of Volatile Organic Compound Emissions Measured By Ptr-Ms, Ftir, And Gc From Tropical Biomass Burning, T. G. Karl, Ted J. Christian, Robert J. Yokelson, Paulo Artaxo, Wei Min Hao, Alex Guenther

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions from fires in tropical forest fuels were quantified using Proton-Transfer-Reaction Mass Spectrometry (PTRMS), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and gas chromatography (GC) coupled to PTRMS (GC-PTR-MS). We investigated VOC emissions from 19 controlled laboratory fires at the USFS (United States Forest Service) Fire Sciences Laboratory and 16 fires during an intensive airborne field campaign during the peak of the burning season in Brazil in 2004. The VOC emissions were dominated by oxygenated VOCs (OVOC) (OVOC/NMHC similar to 4:1, NMHC: non-methane hydrocarbons) The specificity of the PTR-MS instrument, which measures the mass to charge ratio of …

Admixture Mapping Provides Evidence Of Association Of The Vnn1 Gene With Hypertension, Xiaofeng Zhu, Richard S. Cooper Nov 2007

Admixture Mapping Provides Evidence Of Association Of The Vnn1 Gene With Hypertension, Xiaofeng Zhu, Richard S. Cooper

Faculty Publications

Migration patterns in modern societies have created the opportunity to use population admixture as a strategy to identify susceptibility genes. To implement this strategy, we genotyped a highly informative ancestry marker panel of 2270 single nucleotide polymorohisms in a random nonulation sample of African American (N = 1743). European Americans (N = 1000) and Mexican Americans (N = 581). We then examined the evidence for over-transmission of specific loci to cases from one of the two ancestral populations. Hypertension cases and controls were defined based on standard clinical criteria. Both case-only and case-control analyses were performed among African Americans. With …

Understanding Patenting Decisions: A Classroom Experiment, Amalia Yiannaka Nov 2007

Understanding Patenting Decisions: A Classroom Experiment, Amalia Yiannaka

Cornhusker Economics

Innovations are crucial to the future success of firms, with most products having only a limited life cycle. When innovations occur, the firm must decide the best way to protect their intellectual property; this essentially comes down to keeping the innovation a trade secret or filing for a patent. Teaching students the basics of intellectual property protection is not difficult. Most are familiar with the general concept of patent protection and have some understanding as to why patents are an important tool available to firms and individual innovators. However, an in-depth analysis of the patenting decision making process can be …

Construction Of A Calcium Matter-Wave Interferometer, Christopher Joseph Erickson Nov 2007

Construction Of A Calcium Matter-Wave Interferometer, Christopher Joseph Erickson

Theses and Dissertations

I describe the construction of a calcium matter-wave interferometer. The interferometer is based on a Ramsey-Borde scheme, and uses a thermal beam of atoms excited by an optical-frequency transition in calcium. In our experiment four pi/2 pulses of light are delivered to the atoms, which split and recombine the wave functions of the atoms. Our experimental design minimizes first-order Doppler shifts, and allows for the cancellation of systematic errors including phase shifts due to rotation and acceleration. I describe the individual components of the interferometer and its assembly. The requirements for the electronics used in the experiment as well as …

'Aux Armes, Citoyens!:' Time For Law Schools To Lead The Movement For Free And Open Access To The Law, Ian Gallacher Nov 2007

'Aux Armes, Citoyens!:' Time For Law Schools To Lead The Movement For Free And Open Access To The Law, Ian Gallacher

College of Law - Faculty Scholarship

This article is a manifesto that outlines the principles of the open access to legal information movement and sounds a call to action for law schools to become leaders in that movement. The article surveys the present legal information environment, reviews the development of computer-assisted legal information and the long-term future of book-based legal research, and discusses the problems inherent in a system where two large “information resource” corporations control access to legal information. After considering the need for open access to the law for pro se litigants, scholars from outside the legal academy, and practicing lawyers, after considering and …

Drought Effects On Large Fire Activity In Canadian And Alaskan Forests, Jingfeng Xiao, Qianlai Zhuang Nov 2007

Drought Effects On Large Fire Activity In Canadian And Alaskan Forests, Jingfeng Xiao, Qianlai Zhuang

All Materials

Fire is the dominant disturbance in forest ecosystems across Canada and Alaska, and has important implications for forest ecosystems, terrestrial carbon dioxide emissions and the forestry industry. Large fire activity had increased in Canadian and Alaskan forests during the last four decades of the 20th century. Here we combined the Palmer Drought Severity Index and historical large fire databases to demonstrate that Canada and Alaska forest regions experienced summer drying over this time period, and drought during the fire season significantly affected forest fire activity in these regions. Climatic warming, positive geopotential height anomalies and ocean circulation patterns were spatially …
