Improved Aperture For Modulation Transfer Function Measurement Of Detector Arrays Beyond The Nyquist Frequency, Alfred D. Ducharme, Sarah P. Temple
Improved Aperture For Modulation Transfer Function Measurement Of Detector Arrays Beyond The Nyquist Frequency, Alfred D. Ducharme, Sarah P. Temple
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
The design of an aperture for the generation of laser speckle with a flat power spectrum covering a wide band of the measurement spatial-frequency range is presented. This aperture allows for the measurement of modulation transfer function (MTF) from zero to twice the Nyquist frequency of a two-dimensional detector array. This design mitigates many of the measurement problems inherent in other aperture designs. The MTF measurement of a CCD detector array is used to demonstrate the measurement technique and illustrate the advantages of the new aperture design.

Collective Disaster Responses To Katrina And Rita: Exploring Therapeutic Community, Social Capital, And Social Control, Lee M. Miller
Collective Disaster Responses To Katrina And Rita: Exploring Therapeutic Community, Social Capital, And Social Control, Lee M. Miller
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
The goal of this paper is to explore the dynamics of one East Texas community’s responses to hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Literature on community response to disaster forms a basis for reflections on observed local response activities, including convergence behavior. In particular, the concept of social capital is compared to, and contrasted with, Barton’s model of therapeutic community. Social control is a relatively unexplored element of social capital, but one that helps us understand the development of normative frameworks, generalized trust, and the perceived legitimacy of institutions–important factors in effective community response to disasters. In conclusion, implications for future preparedness …

Campus Cowboys And Cowgirls: A Research Note On College Rodeo Athletes, Gene L. Theodori
Campus Cowboys And Cowgirls: A Research Note On College Rodeo Athletes, Gene L. Theodori
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
College rodeo has evolved from small, single-campus fund-raisers, celebrations, and/or competitions into an internationally recognized North American collegiate sport. Throughout its history, though, the sport has received virtually no attention in the sociological literature. In this research note I provide a descriptive summary of member characteristics and selected findings from a 2003-2004 National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association membership survey. I also empirically examine the association of size of place of residency during childhood with previous involvement in rodeo (i.e., before participating in college rodeo). Findings reveal that respondents who spent most of their childhood in more rural areas (i.e., in the …

Optimization Of Optical Computed Tomography Techniques For The Synthesis Of Particle Aggregate Models, Patrick Anthony Giordano Jr.
Optimization Of Optical Computed Tomography Techniques For The Synthesis Of Particle Aggregate Models, Patrick Anthony Giordano Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
The characterization of 3-D shapes of particles in geomaterial aggregate mixtures is important for understanding the micro-mechanics of granular materials. Also, numerical synthesis of 3-D particle shapes from their corresponding shape descriptors is required for developing discrete element models (DEMs) that can be used to predict particle contact-forces, and ultimately the shear strength of the aggregate mixture.
Previous work has shown that Fourier-based 3-D shape descriptors can be constructed for aggregate mixtures, using a statistical combination of 2-D projections. Furthermore, optical tomography methods using the Algebraic Reconstruction Technique (ART) algorithm has proved capable of synthesizing 3-D shapes from 2-D projections, …

Modified Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy In Spastic Cerebral Palsy: A Pilot Study, Hsuan-Ju Lin, Ching-Yi Wu, Chia-Ling Chen
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Children with spastic cerebral palsy (CP) usually exhibit motor deficits and limited daily activities. Studies in recent years indicated that constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) might improve motor performance in CP patients. Combining kinematic analysis with clinical assessments, this study investigated the effect of modified CIMT (mCIMT) in four children with spastic CP immediately and one month after treatment. During the 3-week intervention, subjects underwent task-related training using the affected hand with restraint of the unaffected hand. The experimental results revealed significant improvements of the affected hand in use frequency, movement quality, grasping pattern, and bimanual coordination, both immediately and one month …

Why The No Child Left Behind Act Needs To Be Restructured To Accomplish Its Goals And How To Do It, Gershon M. Ratner
Why The No Child Left Behind Act Needs To Be Restructured To Accomplish Its Goals And How To Do It, Gershon M. Ratner
University of the District of Columbia Law Review
The No Child Left Behind Act ("NCLB" or the "Act") 1 has created a once in a lifetime opportunity to improve American public education. NCLB has embraced vital goals for the new Information Age: academic proficiency for virtually all public school students and elimination of the severe racial/income "achievement gap." The Act provides four pillars on which states and localities might build a bridge to reach the goals: higher standards; periodic testing to measure the extent to which the standards are being met; disaggregating test results by student subgroup; and reporting to the public. The critical question is "how to …

A New Look At Egypt’S Brain Drain Within Auc, Iman Dawood
A New Look At Egypt’S Brain Drain Within Auc, Iman Dawood
The Undergraduate Research Journal
The emigration of highly skilled and educated Egyptian citizens has been on-going for decades and has had a relatively negative effect on Egypt’s development. Drawing on 100 Egyptian undergraduate students—both male and female – in order to gauge a rough estimate of the number of AUC students who plan on traveling and living abroad as well as their reasons for doing so. The research showed that 90% of students wished to live abroad. In addition, interviews were held with Egyptian professors to discuss potential reasons for Egyptian nationals to remain within their country as well as the ways in which …

Youth Perspectives On Citizenship And Civic Engagement In Egypt, Nahla Mahgoub, Reham Morsi
The Undergraduate Research Journal
During the past two decades, Egypt has witnessed an enormous change in the way political affairs are handled. For this reason, concepts of citizenship and nationality have changed in the minds of all peoples, creating a need to come up with specific definitions of citizenship that provides a clear framework in which the government and its people can interact. Egypt has a special demographic distribution of the youth bulge-where the youth make up the majority of the population. For this reason it is important to asses how this youth bulge perceive the concepts of citizenship, nationality and civic engagement. This …

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Nodular lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NLPHL) is a recently described type of Hodgkin’s lymphoma (HL) and accounts for 5-6% of all the cases of HL. Here we report the case of an elderly man who presented to Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Oman, with severe hypercalcemia, and was diagnosed to have stage IV NLPHL. Although the incidence of hypercalcemia is estimated to be between 1-5% in classical HL, to our knowledge this is the first report of NLPHL presenting with severe hypercalcemia. The patient responded to the anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody, Rituximab, and has been in clinical remission for more than 3 …

Mice Deficient In Involucrin, Envoplakin, And Periplakin Have A Defective Epidermal Barrier., Lisa M Sevilla, Rachida Nachat, Karen R Groot, John F Klement, Jouni Uitto, Philippe Djian, Arto Määttä, Fiona M Watt
Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers
The cornified envelope is assembled from transglutaminase cross-linked proteins and lipids in the outermost epidermal layers and is essential for skin barrier function. Involucrin, envoplakin, and periplakin form the protein scaffold on which the envelope assembles. To examine their combined function, we generated mice deficient in all three genes. The triple knockouts have delayed embryonic barrier formation and postnatal hyperkeratosis (abnormal accumulation of cornified cells) resulting from impaired desquamation. Cornified envelopes form but are ultrastructurally abnormal, with reduced lipid content and decreased mechanical integrity. Expression of proteases is reduced and the protease inhibitor, serpina1b, is highly upregulated, resulting in defective …

The Learning Organisation And Health Care Education, Rashid K. Al-Abri, Intisar S. Al-Hashmi
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
The ‘Learning Organisation’ is a concept first described by Peter Senge as an organisation where people continuously learn and enhance their capabilities to create. It consists of five main disciplines: team learning, shared vision, mental models, personal mastery and systems thinking. These disciplines are dynamic and interact with each other. System thinking is the cornerstone of a true learning organisation and is described as the discipline used to implement the disciplines. In a learning organisation, health care education aims to educate its members with up to date knowledge to produce competent and safe personnel, who can promote quality in health …
