Collecting, Organizing, And Managing Resources For Teaching Educational Games The Wiki Way, David Wiley, Shelley Henson, Brett Shelton

Faculty Publications

As a reaction to the growing number of teachers using games in their curricula and the corresponding increase in university courses aimed at teaching the design of effective instructional games, we introduced a panel at the recent Games, Learning and Society presentation in Madison, Wisconsin, in June 2006. This panel brought together a community of interested parties involved with teaching educational game design. We collaborated with attendees before the panel convened so that we could introduce resources such as syllabi, collections of readings, and discussions of theory in a wiki environment to which participants could contribute during the session. After …

Order Without (Enforceable) Law: Why Countries Enter Into Non-Enforceable Competition Policy Chapters In Free Trade Agreements, D. Daniel Sokol Dec 2007

Order Without (Enforceable) Law: Why Countries Enter Into Non-Enforceable Competition Policy Chapters In Free Trade Agreements, D. Daniel Sokol

Chicago-Kent Law Review

There has been an explosion in the past ten to fifteen years of bilateral and regional free trade agreements in Latin America (together, preferential free trade agreements or PTAs). The purpose of PTAs is to increase trade, regulatory, and investment liberalization. As trade liberalization requires more than just a reduction of tariffs, PTAs include "chapters" in a number of areas of domestic regulation. These chapters that address domestic regulation create binding commitments to liberalize domestic regulation that may impact foreign trade. Among chapters that address domestic regulation, many of the Latin American PTAs include a chapter on antitrust or competition …

Anthony Zera Publications

The 458 amino acid sequence of a mature JHE protein from the cricket Gryllus assimilis was identified after isolating the partial cDNA sequence encoding this protein from a fat body and midgut cDNA library. This hemimetabolan JHE sequence shows over 40% amino acid similarity to the known JHE sequences of several holometabolous insects. It also includes previously determined peptide sequences for G. assimilis JHE as well as two other motifs associated with JHE enzymes in holometabolous insects. The predicted molecular weight of the protein agrees with that of the JHE previously purified from G. assimilis. Partial genomic sequence encoding …

Corporate Social Responsibility: The Role Of Law And Markets And The Case Of Developing Countries, Antonio Vives Dec 2007

Corporate Social Responsibility: The Role Of Law And Markets And The Case Of Developing Countries, Antonio Vives

Chicago-Kent Law Review

In order for the corporation to engage in responsible practices, many obstacles must be overcome. One such obstacle is the belief of many managers that the corporation would be violating its fiduciary responsibility if it engaged in activities that go beyond what is required by the law. Another obstacle is that many of those practices have a real cost but are perceived not to have a corresponding tangible benefit. The article discusses and dismisses these perceived obstacles and argues that it is both through law and the workings of the market that responsible behavior can enhance society's welfare. It is …

Uncertainty And Loss In The Free Speech Rights Of Public Employees Under Garcetti V. Ceballos, Sarah F. Suma Dec 2007

Uncertainty And Loss In The Free Speech Rights Of Public Employees Under Garcetti V. Ceballos, Sarah F. Suma

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Resolving a circuit split, the Supreme Court declared in Garcetti v. Ceballos that the First Amendment does not protect speech made pursuant to a public employee's work duties, regardless of whether the speech relates to a matter of public concern or the government's restrictions are justifiable. This article argues that a bright line rule eliminating First Amendment protection for job-duty speech is inconsistent with the theories underlying free speech protection. Further, this article explores practical drawbacks to Garcetti's bright-line rule, including inconsistent judicial determination of the scope of job duties, a disincentive to report government abuse through one's chain-of-command, …

This research is concerned with explaining the variation in growth rates among employment subcenters. The purpose of the study is to find answers to the question: What factors/variables contribute to the growth or decline of employment subcenters? More specifically, the study aims to 1) identify and describe employment subcenters in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, and 2) explain the variation in their growth rate over a specified period of time through testing a set of variables extracted from related literature. A multiple regression analysis technique is employed to complete the empirical analysis. The DFW metropolitan area was chosen as a …

"Does Your Throat Hurt More In The Morning Or Throughout The Day?" "Yes.": Intercultural Medical Discourse, Sarah Elizabeth May

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

An increasing number of immigrants to the United States do not use English as their first, or even second, language. Members of the medical community who treats such patients often do not speak the range of home languages of their patients. As a result of the absence of a common language, many patients are forced to communicate the best they can with their physicians in English. This study focuses the interactions of non-native English speaking patients with their doctors when interpreters were unavailable. Interactions between health care providers and non-native English speaking patients at a university health clinic were videotaped …

Today's Army: An Examination Of The Differences Of Newspaper Coverage About America's Army In Small And Large Markets, Kimberly Levine Hanson Dec 2007

Today's Army: An Examination Of The Differences Of Newspaper Coverage About America's Army In Small And Large Markets, Kimberly Levine Hanson

Communication Theses - Archive

This study examines differences in coverage of prominent Army news stories in a daily newspaper in a rural town near an Army post and the nearest metropolitan area. Past media and visual effects research suggests that newspaper coverage sets the agenda not only for its readers, but for other mass media, as well. As the American population moves in and around metropolitan regions and further away from any major Army presence, newspaper coverage may become essential in informing the general public about the Army that serves them. A content analysis over a two-month timeframe of the Killeen Daily Herald and …

Modeling An Information Literacy Programme For Undergraduates: A Soft Systems Methodology Approach / Nor Edzan Che Nasir, Che Nasir Nor Edzan

Student Works (2000-2009)

In its simplest form, information literacy is defined as the ability to recognise a need for information and from there on, one is able to locate, retrieve, evaluate and use the procured information effectively. The acquisition of information literacy skills is deemed by many as a necessity for the Information Age and it is termed by many as a life long learning skill. Set against such a background, this study is centred on the issue of information literacy competencies of Malaysian final year ICT undergraduates. The focus is on final year undergraduates at the Faculty of Computer Science and Information …

School Counselor Perceptions And Competencies For Closing The Achievement Gap : Implications For Counselor And Higher Education Programs For All Educators., Susan Rardon Rose Dec 2007

School Counselor Perceptions And Competencies For Closing The Achievement Gap : Implications For Counselor And Higher Education Programs For All Educators., Susan Rardon Rose

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

"If this generation of youth is lost, much of the hope for an economically, socially and technologically strong nation will also be lost." - Kuykendall, 1992 When youths become convinced that they will not be able to make it in mainstream America, they tend to take the skills they have and use them to take the low roads of life. Even though all citizens will ultimately be affected by the success or failure of these youths, it is a challenge for educators to provide ways to prepare them to choose the high road as the path for their lives. The …

Perturbations In Protein Dynamics Associated With Ligand Binding To The Blood Coagulation Enzymes Thrombin And Factor Xiii., Thomas Michael Sabo Dec 2007

Perturbations In Protein Dynamics Associated With Ligand Binding To The Blood Coagulation Enzymes Thrombin And Factor Xiii., Thomas Michael Sabo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In blood coagulation, the serine protease thrombin is a multifaceted enzyme that interacts with multiple proteins. Thrombin utilizes two anion binding exosites (ABE-I and II) to supplement binding to fibrinogen and to the platelet receptor GpIba, two proteins instrumental in clot formation. Approximately 7% to 15% of the fibrinogen ? chain exists as the highly anionic ?' variant ( 410 PEHPAETEY S DSLY S PEDDL 427) , which has been shown to bind ABE-II. GpIba possesses a similar anionic stretch of residues ( 269 DEGDTDLY S DY S Y S PEEDTEG 286 ); however, the exact destination of thrombin binding …

Therapeutic Targeting Of Tumor Associated Macrophages., Stephanie Kaye Watkins 1981- Dec 2007

Therapeutic Targeting Of Tumor Associated Macrophages., Stephanie Kaye Watkins 1981-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous studies on the mechanistic induction of anti-tumor responses by IL-12 cytokine therapy have focused on the adaptive immune response, specifically the activation NK cells and T cells as the primary targets of IL-12 treatment. In contrast, little attention has been given to the potential role of macrophages in the initiation of anti-tumor responses by IL-12 therapy despite reports that macrophages play a major role in promoting tumor growth and metastasis and in suppressing anti-tumor immune responses. Based on the functional adaptivity hypothesis, which is the concept that macrophages functionally adapt, rather than differentiate into specific mature subsets, in response …

Optimal Allocation Of Trucking Workload At Ge Consumer And Industrial., Xu Yang 1983- Dec 2007

Optimal Allocation Of Trucking Workload At Ge Consumer And Industrial., Xu Yang 1983-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Consumer and Industrial group of the General Electric Company (GE) allocates its shipping truckload to seventeen different trucking companies over 701 different routes from each of its nine terminals to 48 contiguous states. One of the seventeen trucking companies is its wholly owned subsidiary, which is PDCO. All of the others are contract-based trucking companies. GE Consumer and Industrial managers realized that they were not allocating the entire trucking capacity in an optimal fashion to the seventeen trucking companies, and the spreadsheet-based analytical tool used on a daily basis could not generate an optimal or near optimal solution. They …

Eigenvector-Based Multidimensional Frequency Estimation : Identifiability, Performance, And Applications., Jun Liu Dec 2007

Eigenvector-Based Multidimensional Frequency Estimation : Identifiability, Performance, And Applications., Jun Liu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Multidimensional frequency estimation is a classic signal processing problem that has versatile applications in sensor array processing and wireless communications. Eigenvalue-based two-dimensional (2-D) and N -dimensional ( N -D) frequency estimation algorithms have been well documented, however, these algorithms suffer from limited identifiability and demanding computations. This dissertation develops a framework on eigenvector-based N -D frequency estimation, which contains several novel algorithms that estimate a structural matrix from eigenvectors and then resolve the N -D frequencies by dividing the elements of the structural matrix. Compared to the existing eigenvalue-based algorithms, these eigenvector-based algorithms can achieve automatic pairing without an extra …
