An Examination Of The Factors Of Influence On Rebellious Risky Behaviors In Adolescents, Audrey Roach Dec 2007

An Examination Of The Factors Of Influence On Rebellious Risky Behaviors In Adolescents, Audrey Roach

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Previous research indicates that the majority of today's adolescents are engaging in or have engaged in some type of rebellious risky behavior, such as consuming alcohol or using tobacco or other drugs (Haynie, 2003; Kann et al., 2000; Loper, 2000; Markey, Markey, & Tinsley, 2003; Patton, McMorris, Donath, & Catalano, 2004; Rickwood, 2005; Steinberg & Morris, 2001). In order to decrease levels of adolescent engagement in these rebellious behaviors, the factors of influence on these behaviors must be identified and understood. While studies in the past have focused on individual factors that influence adolescent involvement in these behaviors, the present …

Evaluation And Needs-Based Assessment Of Special Education Teachers' Knowledge Of Austism Interventions, Dawn Richardson

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is being increasingly identified in children, yet there are only a minimal number of studies examining the use of research-based intervention strategies in a classroom educational setting. This present study examined the use of Discrete Trial Training, Picture Exchange Communication System, Social Stories, Structured Teaching, and Video Self-Modeling by special education teachers with students with ASD. A questionnaire was completed by 91 special education teachers from the Green River Region Educational Cooperative, which encompasses 17 different school districts in the area of western and south central Kentucky. They answered questions about their level of training, knowledge …

Examining Social Capital: A Theoretical And Empirical Assessment Using The Work Of Bourdieu, Coleman And Putnam, Brent Lovitt Dec 2007

Examining Social Capital: A Theoretical And Empirical Assessment Using The Work Of Bourdieu, Coleman And Putnam, Brent Lovitt

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The value that individuals attribute to their social ties with other residents can have an impact on the amount of crime that occurs within their own neighborhood. While previous criminological research has identified a negative relationship between the levels of social capital and victimization within neighborhoods, these studies often used different conceptualizations of social capital. This study seeks to extend previous research by examining the multiple dimensions of social capital within each classical approach and to assess each dimension's influence on self-reported violent victimization and property crime victimization in Chicago neighborhoods using data from the Project on Human Development in …

Blaming For Columbine: Conceptions Of Agency In The Contemporary United States, Claudia Strauss Dec 2007

Blaming For Columbine: Conceptions Of Agency In The Contemporary United States, Claudia Strauss

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

Modern Westerners are supposed to embrace a notion of unfettered personal agency. An analysis of public commentary (interviews, editorials, and online message boards) in the United States about the Columbine school shootings shows that the voluntarist cultural model of persons as autonomous agents, while certainly very important, is just one of a number of cultural models Americans use to explain human action and has particular political and interpersonal uses. We might think that conceptions as basic as those of personhood and agency would be hegemonic: both singular and internalized as unexamined, taken for‐granted assumptions. In some contexts, voluntarist ideas about …

Recovering Spiritual Direction In The Protestant Tradition, Morris Dirks Dec 2007

Recovering Spiritual Direction In The Protestant Tradition, Morris Dirks

Doctor of Ministry

The purpose of this dissertation is to foster a commitment to the development of spiritual direction in the ongoing care of pastors within the Protestant tradition. The need to recover this practice, once well established in the church, is made obvious by the increasing challenges faced in ministry and the spiritual and emotional impact now experienced by pastors. More and more leaders are losing their way as a result of the unchecked stress fostered by the overwhelming expectations, whether real or perceived, which are placed on them. Pastoral responsibilities have been significantly compounded by the increasing programmatic and executive functions …

Identifiable Factors Which Measure The Impact Of Social Capital Within Schools, Charlotte A. Monconduit Dec 2007

Identifiable Factors Which Measure The Impact Of Social Capital Within Schools, Charlotte A. Monconduit

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In spite of much confusion related to the conceptualizing of the social capital, it remains at the forefront of understanding that relationships matter. In particular, educational relationships of interest are immersed in schools and their connection to student achievement is many times uncertain. After conducting a considerable review of the literature on social capital, the researcher undertook the task of creating an instrument to measure social capital within schools in hope of contributing greater social capital understanding and clarity. The purpose of this study was to create a valid and reliable instrument supported by strong psychometric properties to assess the …

Small Business Financing: Survey Evidence In West Texas, Wei He, H. Kent Baker Dec 2007

Small Business Financing: Survey Evidence In West Texas, Wei He, H. Kent Baker

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

We investigate the financial sources of small firms through a survey of sample firms from West Texas. Evidence shows that the two most common start-up financing alternatives are personal savings and commercial bank loans. Commercial banks remain the most popular source of financing for present and future needs, followed by leasing companies and credit unions. Informal types of financing such as business credit cards, and trade credit are used in addition to lines of credit for transaction and working capital purposes. Firms typically review their financial performance monthly and use common cash balances as the primary financial tool.

Equity Offerings By Firms That Emerged From Bankruptcy, Surendranath Jory, Jeff Madura Dec 2007

Equity Offerings By Firms That Emerged From Bankruptcy, Surendranath Jory, Jeff Madura

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Entrepreneurship is not only used to create a business idea, but also to restructure a business in response to environmental conditions. Firms that issue equity after emerging from bankruptcy are unique in that they exhibit less asymmetric information than other firms that issue equity. They were previously subject to the SEC disclosure requirements when they had publicly-traded securities, and were required to disclose information about their assets, liabilities, and governance while operating under Chapter 11 bankruptcy laws. Our analysis determines that the mean underpricing of the firms that engaged in public stock offerings after emerging from bankruptcy is 4.49 percent, …

Excited-State Equilibration Over 30 Å In A Platinum(Ii) Quinolinolate−Bridge−Platinum(Ii) Porphyrin Complex, Victor A. Montes, Michael A. J. Rodgers, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr. Dec 2007

Excited-State Equilibration Over 30 Å In A Platinum(Ii) Quinolinolate−Bridge−Platinum(Ii) Porphyrin Complex, Victor A. Montes, Michael A. J. Rodgers, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr.

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Long-range triplet excited-state equilibration occurs over a nanometric distance between platinum(II) 8-quinolinolate ((3)Ptq(2) = 1.87 eV) and platinum(II) tetraphenylporphyrin ((PtTPP)-Pt-3 = 1.89 eV). The equilibrium is mediated by a fluorene-thiophene-fluorene bridge ((FTF)-F-3 = 1.92 eV) and is characterized by a double-exponential decay (tau(1) = 39 +/- 4 ps; tau(2) = 351 +/- 15 ps) that suggests the participation of three separate excited states : (3)Ptq(2), (FTF)-F-3, and 3PtTPP, respectively. Numerical simulation of the dual equilibrium allowed for estimation of the individual rate constants for each of the reversible steps (k(ET) = 3.9 x 10(9)-4.1 x 10(10) s(-1)). As a result …

Entrepreneurial Stock Brokering And Switching Costs, G. Geoffrey Booth, Orkunt M. Dalgic, Juha-Pekka Kallunki, Petri Sahlström Dec 2007

Entrepreneurial Stock Brokering And Switching Costs, G. Geoffrey Booth, Orkunt M. Dalgic, Juha-Pekka Kallunki, Petri Sahlström

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Stock brokers are entrepreneurs who incur switching costs when the change brokerage houses. We use Helsinki Stock Exchange data to investigate these costs by examining whether investors are loyal to their brokers when brokers move. We find that investors who have extant relationships with the new house are more likely to attract the investors from the old houses, and savvy (knowledgeable) investors are more likely to stay with their broker.

Disaster Recovery Planning: What Section 404 Audits Reveal, Dana R. Hermanson, Daniel M. Ivancevich, Susan H. Ivancevich

Faculty Articles

This article summarizes U.S. Sarbanes-Oxley Act section 404 internal control reports that reveal material weaknesses due to inadequate disaster recovery planning. According to the authors, Section 404 applies to public companies with over $75 million in public float. They advise that auditors evaluating internal control over financial reporting must consider key information technology-related risks and controls that affect financial reporting, including issues related to disaster recovery planning.

Closed-Form Derivations Of Isi And Mui For Time-Reversed Ultra Wideband, K. Popovski, Beata J. Wysocki, Tadeusz Wysocki Dec 2007

Closed-Form Derivations Of Isi And Mui For Time-Reversed Ultra Wideband, K. Popovski, Beata J. Wysocki, Tadeusz Wysocki

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)

Through transmitter pre-filtering, a time reversed UWB system is capable if harnessing a multipath channel to achieve temporal and spatial focusing. Unfortunately, large RMS channel delay spread leads to significant intersymbol and multiuser interference. This paper presents closed-form expressions for self and multi-user interference for a UWB system utilizing a time-reversed approach. The influence of user multiplexing codes is taken to account through incorporation of a ‘separation probability’, which characterizes a family of hopping sequences. The standardized IEEE 802.15.3a channel model is applied, and the derived performances are compared with that of a simulated time hopped time-reversed UWB system.

Scalability Of Manet Routing Protocols For Heterogeneous And Homogenous Networks, Huda Al Amri, Mehran Abolhasan, Tadeusz Wysocki Dec 2007

Scalability Of Manet Routing Protocols For Heterogeneous And Homogenous Networks, Huda Al Amri, Mehran Abolhasan, Tadeusz Wysocki

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)

In Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET), mobility, traffic and node density are main network conditions that significantly affect the performance of routing protocols. Much of the previous researches in MANET routing have focused on developing strategies, which suit one specific networking scenario. Therefore, there is no existing protocol that can work well in all different networking scenarios. This paper reviews characteristics of each different classes of routing protocols. Moreover, most of current routing protocols assume homogeneous networking conditions where all nodes have the same capabilities and resources. Although homogenous networks are easy to model and analysis, they exhibits poor scalability …

Musings On Music: Wagner, Redemption, And The Divine, Michael Costik Dec 2007

Musings On Music: Wagner, Redemption, And The Divine, Michael Costik

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

“How can I atone for my guilt?” This question is asked by the guileless fool, hero of Richard Wagner’s final Music Drama, Parsifal during Act Two; it is a sublime scene, and, perhaps, one of the finest examples of artistic mastery in existence. This is certainly open for debate, and subject to personal preference, but please allow me to at least use this as an example, since it has been instrumental in not only my musical growth, but also in my development and the recommitment to my Catholic faith. …

Bidimensional Pr Qmf With Fir Filters, Jian-Ao Lian Dec 2007

Bidimensional Pr Qmf With Fir Filters, Jian-Ao Lian

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Multidimensional perfect reconstruction (PR) quadrature mirror filter (QMF) banks with finite impulse response (FIR) filters induced from systems of biorthogonal multivariate scaling functions and wavelets are investigated. In particular, bivariate scaling functions and wavelets with dilation as an expansive integer matrix whose determinant is two in absolute value are considered. Demonstrative quincunxial examples are explicitly given and new FIR filters are constructed.
