Designing A Dynamic Data Driven Application System For Coastal And Environmental Modeling, Gabrielle Allen, Philip Bogden, Richard A. Luettich, Edward Seidel, Robert Twilley

Faculty Publications

The economically important Louisiana Coastal Area (LCA) is susceptible to hurricane activity which is increasingly aggravated by the continuing erosion of wetlands. Various programs are aimed at building sophisticated models of meteorological, coastal, and ecological processes. The emerging paradigm of Dynamic Data Driven Application Systems (DDDAS) can be applied to these models leading to new scenarios for integrated, real-time simulations that include feedback control with sensors and simulations. This paper describes the motivation and components for a comprehensive DDDAS for coastal and environmental modeling and the implications this has for scientific libraries and high performance computing. © 2007 International Federation …

Virtual Radicalisation: Challenges For Police, Simon O'Rourke Dec 2007

Virtual Radicalisation: Challenges For Police, Simon O'Rourke

Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference

Recent advances in communications technology are providing a medium for individuals or groups to subscribe to extremist worldviews and form networks, access training and obtain information, whilst remaining virtually undetected in the online world. Whilst the Internet is facilitating global virtual communities like Second Life, MySpace and Facebook it is also providing an anonymous meeting place for disenfranchised individuals to gather, share ideas, post and exchange information regarding their particular ideology. This virtual community provides a sense of belonging to a global cause in which the actions of an individual can be aligned to, and seen to contribute towards something …

Critical Infrastructure Systems Modelling: Benchmarking Cpntools, Graeme Pye, Matthew J. Warren Dec 2007

Critical Infrastructure Systems Modelling: Benchmarking Cpntools, Graeme Pye, Matthew J. Warren

Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference

This paper reports on the application of systems modelling benchmarks to determine the viability of systems modelling software and its suitability for modelling critical infrastructure systems. This research applies the earlier research that related to developing benchmarks that when applied to systems modelling software will indicate its likely suitability to modelling critical infrastructure systems. In this context, the systems modeling benchmarks will assess the practicality of CPNTools to the task of modelling critical infrastructure systems.

Managing Analysis, David Shaw Dec 2007

Managing Analysis, David Shaw

Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference

The Intelligence profession requires effective management to function properly and professional discourse highlights the changing nature of intelligence work. Highlighted “failures” are linked to organizational structures and ethos, and proposals to address the problems include discussion of human and organizational factors with recommendations that address the issues. However, optimising the intelligence process may not be a simple case of applying management techniques as the work relies substantially on individual endeavour. Innovative management techniques are needed and these should be grounded in recognising the peculiar nature of analysis and the skill set required.

Songs Of The Wild: Temporal And Geographical Distinctions In The Acoustic Properties Of The Songs Of The Yellow-Breasted Chat, Jackie L. Canterbury Dec 2007

Songs Of The Wild: Temporal And Geographical Distinctions In The Acoustic Properties Of The Songs Of The Yellow-Breasted Chat, Jackie L. Canterbury

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The Yellow-breasted Chat, Icteria virens, is a member of the wood-warbler family, Parulidae, and exists as eastern I. v. virens and western I. v. auricollis subspecies. It is the only wood-warbler known to sing diurnally and nocturnally.

One objective was to determine whether the eastern and western subspecies produce songs that differ acoustically; another was to determine whether a western population of Chats in Nebraska produces songs that differ acoustically at dawn and at night. Properties measured were maximum frequency, maximum power, notes/second, singing rate, and % time singing. In addition, the inter-song interval and % whistle notes were measured …

Organizational Recruitment Web Sites: The Influence Of Web Site Aesthetics On Initial Affective Reactions To The Site And Subsequent Attraction To The Organization, Rebekkah Wills Dec 2007

Organizational Recruitment Web Sites: The Influence Of Web Site Aesthetics On Initial Affective Reactions To The Site And Subsequent Attraction To The Organization, Rebekkah Wills

All Theses

The present study examined the potential relationship between specific characteristics of organizational recruitment web sites and applicant attraction to the organization. Cober, Brown, Keeping, and Levy (2004) proposed a conceptual model that suggests web site aesthetics influence the applicant's attitude toward the web site which in turn influences applicant attraction. The current study provides a partial test of this model by examining web site aesthetics, prior attitudes toward the organization, initial affective reactions to the web site, perceptions of web site usability and post-viewing attitudes toward the site and the organization. Participants (N = 159) included undergraduate students using the …

The Rate And Timing Of Direct Mountain Front Recharge In An Arid Environment, Silver Island Mountains, Utah, Gregory T. Carling Dec 2007

The Rate And Timing Of Direct Mountain Front Recharge In An Arid Environment, Silver Island Mountains, Utah, Gregory T. Carling

Theses and Dissertations

Direct mountain front recharge (MFR), water table recharge at the base of the mountain front, was evaluated on the arid (<250 mm/yr precipitation) Silver Island Mountains by comparing mountain precipitation to groundwater response. Direct MFR contributions were assessed on two catchments, one bedrock (i.e., mountain block) dominated and the other alluvial fan (i.e., mountain front) dominated. Catchment precipitation and shallow groundwater levels at each catchment outlet were measured for a 24 month period beginning October 2005. This time period captured one complete hydrologic cycle (December 2005-February 2007) for which annual and seasonal direct MFR rates were calculated. Annual direct MFR was calculated using a modified version of the water table fluctuation (WTF) method as 0.015-0.016% of precipitation on both catchments, with seasonal variations of 0% in summer up to 0.023% in winter, spring and fall. Seasonal direct MFR contributions are similar on the bedrock and the alluvial fan dominated catchments, with a notable exception during fall 2006 when direct MFR was twice as effective on the bedrock dominated system than on the alluvial fan dominated system (0.022% and 0.011% of precipitation, respectively). Darcy's law calculations show similarly low annual direct MFR contributions (0.013-0.032% of precipitation) as those calculated by the WTF method. Calculated direct MFR is 10% or less than typical calculated combined MFR (near surface recharge and deep underflow from the mountain block) for similar terrains and climates, and is only 3.5% of the combined MFR for the Silver Island Mountains as calculated by the Maxey-Eakin model. However, based on total recharge to the adjacent playa, it is apparent that the Maxey-Eakin model overestimates combined MFR, and the small calculated direct MFR is at least 50% of combined MFR. Despite some uncertainty in the numerical results, several patterns are evident in the data. The data show that direct MFR occurs in response to small rainfall events throughout much of the year, and that snowmelt is not necessary to produce direct MFR. The data also show that direct MFR responds more quickly and flushes through the system faster on the alluvial fan catchment than on the bedrock catchment.

Optimizing Wireless Network Throughput: Methods And Applications, Pengchang Zhan Dec 2007

Optimizing Wireless Network Throughput: Methods And Applications, Pengchang Zhan

Theses and Dissertations

Ever since Marconi succeeded in his first demonstration on the possibility to communicate over the air overseas about a century ago, wireless communications have experienced dramatic improvements. Today's world sees the penetration of wireless communications into human life almost everywhere, from a simple remote control for TV to a cellular phone. With a better understanding of the adverse nature of the wireless propagation channels, engineers have been able to invent various clever techniques, i.e. Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) technology, spread spectrum communications, Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) to name a few, to achieve fast and reliable communications over each …

Impeding And Facilitating Factors In The Implementation Of Lean Enterprise Methodology, Brian S. Leonard Dec 2007

Impeding And Facilitating Factors In The Implementation Of Lean Enterprise Methodology, Brian S. Leonard

Purdue Polytechnic Masters Theses

The field of lean enterprise has continued to grow since being introduced by the Toyota Corporation after World War II. In academia lean strategies are being introduced in order to prepare students for this new era in operating procedures. Currently, the majority of research in business and academia is focused on processes and methodology, but leadership strategies are yet to be fully examined.

According to Hamilton (2006) there are insufficient resources and research that contribute to understanding successful implementation strategies. Hamilton (2006) expresses concern of the lack of focus on leadership strategies and employee development in lean enterprise.

This qualitative …
