Testimony Before The National Prison Rape Elimination Commission, The Role Of Courts And Litigation In Regulating Prison And Jail Prevention Of Sexual Violence And Misconduct, Margo Schlanger
Other Publications
I have been asked to focus my testimony on litigation and how it contributes to oversight of jails and prisons, in particular to incentivizing appropriate prison and jail supervisory practices and policies that minimize sexual misconduct and sexual violence behind bars. Litigation is an accountability mechanism operative in many spheres, of course, but whereas in most other areas of governmental activity, other such mechanisms have pride of place, we have as a polity largely failed to implement any other effective regulatory system to govern our burgeoning incarcerative apparatus. At least in many states prison and jail systems, litigation is one …

Small-Scale X-Ray Variability In The Cassiopeia A Supernova Remnant, Daniel J. Patnaude, Robert A. Fesen
Small-Scale X-Ray Variability In The Cassiopeia A Supernova Remnant, Daniel J. Patnaude, Robert A. Fesen
Dartmouth Scholarship
A comparison of X-ray observations of the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant taken in 2000, 2002, and 2004 with the Chandra ACIS-S3 reveals the presence of several small-scale features (≤10'') that exhibit significant intensity changes over a 4 yr time frame. Here we report on the variability of six features, four of which show count rate increases from ~10% to over 90%, and two of which show decreases of ~30%-40%. While extracted 1-4.5 keV X-ray spectra do not reveal gross changes in emission-line strengths, spectral fits using nonequilibrium-ionization, metal-rich plasma models indicate increased or decreased electron temperatures for features showing increasing …

Instructional Practices That Teachers Can Use To Build Motivation In The Classroom, Sheldon S. Reynolds
Instructional Practices That Teachers Can Use To Build Motivation In The Classroom, Sheldon S. Reynolds
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Instructional Practices that Teachers can use to Build Motivation in the Classroom All children enter school with the ability to learn but not all possess a desire to want to learn. As a result, teachers are now faced with the daunting task of creating a learning environment that fosters the development of academic motivation and achievement. Therefore, it is imperative that educators implement various strategies to increase students?Ëœ willingness to learn before this lack of motivation leads to significant academic and behavioral problems. This research project uses insights from the leading researchers in the field of motivation to develop a …

Felber's book is more than just a close account of the 1897 baseball season: on the way to the September showdown between the Baltimore Orioles and the Boston Beaneaters, his readers attend what passed for spring training in the 1890s, observe the struggles of the lone umpire on the field, and follow the efforts to open up Sunday baseball by thwarting the Blue Laws.
The Performance Of Dialysis Care: Routinization And Adaptation On The Floor, Laura L. Ellingson
The Performance Of Dialysis Care: Routinization And Adaptation On The Floor, Laura L. Ellingson
Gender and Sexuality Studies
Previous studies of communication in dialysis centers primarily focused on communication between nurses and patients. In this study, ethnographic methods were used to explore the dominant communication performances enacted by dialysis staff members, including registered nurses, patient care technicians, technical aides, a social worker, and a dietitian. Findings suggest a dialectic between extreme routinization of care and continual adaptation. The dominant routine involved repeating the same preparation, treatment, and discharge process 3 shifts per day, thrice weekly for each patient. At the same time, near-constant adjustments to scheduling, coordination of tasks, and problem solving were needed to maintain the performance …
