Sensory Characteristics And Optimization Of A Low-Sodium Salt Formulation And Its Food Application, Armen Khachatryan
Sensory Characteristics And Optimization Of A Low-Sodium Salt Formulation And Its Food Application, Armen Khachatryan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Excessive consumption of sodium is associated with high blood pressure in people. Reduction of sodium intake and replacement of salt with salt substitutes are an essential component of the primary prevention of hypertension. Potassium chloride is the most widely used salt substitute. However, when used in large amounts, it imparts bitterness and metallic aftertaste. Therefore, bitterness masking agents need to be used in salt substitute formulations. L-Arginine has been reported to have bitterness masking properties. No research has yet been conducted to investigate the effects of KCl and L-Arginine on the perception of saltiness and bitterness in the mixture of …
The Failure Of Louisiana Campaign Finance Law: A Case Study Of Brnext And The 2004 Mayoral Election, Casey Elizabeth Rayborn
The Failure Of Louisiana Campaign Finance Law: A Case Study Of Brnext And The 2004 Mayoral Election, Casey Elizabeth Rayborn
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis is a case study in how weak campaign finance laws and government oversight can undermine democracy in a local election. It does so by demonstrating how Louisiana campaign finance law enabled one wealthy businessman to play a major role in a mayoral election under the auspices of an issue-based political action committee. Through the examination of the Louisiana PAC BRNext, its financial activities, and its relationships, this study suggests that BRNext and its founder Lane Grigsby were able to violate the spirit of the law in each of these areas. BRNext was able to take advantage of the …

"But Seriously, Folks...": Understanding The Political Effects Of Late Night Television Comedy, Danielle Lynn Sarver
"But Seriously, Folks...": Understanding The Political Effects Of Late Night Television Comedy, Danielle Lynn Sarver
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The potential political effects of late night comedy programs have been a subject of much debate and concern, particularly since the 2000 Presidential election. Research into this area has been characterized by inconsistency in operationalizations of audiences and an almost exclusive focus on quantitative research. This project was designed to address key concerns that are central to this burgeoning literature by examining “heavy†viewers of late night talk shows (including audiences of Leno, Letterman, and Conan O’Brien) and “heavy†viewers of “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.†A combination of qualitative and quantitative methodologies were used to understand the relationships …
Mentoring Youth With Disabilities: The Mentor's Lived Experiences, Kimberly Lynn Seeger
Mentoring Youth With Disabilities: The Mentor's Lived Experiences, Kimberly Lynn Seeger
LSU Master's Theses
Studies have demonstrated the benefits of mentoring as a successful intervention for youth in programs such as Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Limited research is available which describes the experiences of the mentors who participate in a program specifically for youth with disabilities. Youth with disabilities experience unique challenges as they work towards academic goals and independent living. Findings from this study will provide a insight into the lived experiences from the mentors’ perspective.
The methodology used for this study was a single interview with five adult mentors of youth with disabilities. Qualitative interviews were conducted with each mentor to …
Toward A New Understanding Of Wisdom: The Role Of Communication On Perceptions Of Wisdom, Jon M. Croghan
Toward A New Understanding Of Wisdom: The Role Of Communication On Perceptions Of Wisdom, Jon M. Croghan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Wisdom is a multi-faceted, multi-dimensional, multidisciplinary construct which has been discussed and examined since the beginning of recorded history. Many classical and contemporary scholars have sought to define wisdom, but a precise definition has proven elusive. Since wisdom often defies easy categorization, this dissertation examines wisdom using a multi-methodological perspective. Four chapters of this dissertation discuss the historiography of various societal attributions of wisdom using performance studies techniques. Three chapters examine wisdom and the instruments constructed to measure the construct from a social scientific approach. This study seeks to clarify, while simultaneously deconstructing, the definition of wisdom. The four performative …

The Relationship Between Premarital Sexual Behaviors And The State Of The Marriage, Allison Claire Rayburn
The Relationship Between Premarital Sexual Behaviors And The State Of The Marriage, Allison Claire Rayburn
LSU Master's Theses
The current study examined the possible relationship between premarital sexual behaviors and the state of the marriage as reported by women. Participants were recruited from local Southern Baptist churches and were sent an anonymous mail-out questionnaire; 36 women returned questionnaires that were usable for analyses. Bivariate correlations for the variables that were considered demonstrated that the number of premarital sexual intercourse partners for the participant and her husband were strongly and negatively correlated to marital satisfaction, marital stability, low divorce thoughts, and feelings about the marriage. An analysis of variance showed that the women who experienced premarital sex (intercourse or …
Optimum Energy Allocation For Detection In Wireless Sensor Networks, Krishna Kishore Gunturu
Optimum Energy Allocation For Detection In Wireless Sensor Networks, Krishna Kishore Gunturu
LSU Master's Theses
The problem of binary hypothesis testing in a wireless sensor network is studied in the presence of noisy channels and for non-identical sensors. We have designed a mathematically tractable fusion rule for which optimal energy allocation for individual sensors can be achieved. In this thesis we considered two methods for transmitting the sensor observations; binary modulation and M-ary modulation. In binary modulation we are able to allocate the energy among the sensors and protect the individual quantized bits where as the M-ary modulation provides optimum energy allocation only among the sensors. The goal is to design a fusion rule and …

Tourmalinities In Neoproterzoic Metaevaporitic Deposit Of Duruchas Formation, Damar Belt, Central Namibia, Haiting Sun
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Tourmalinites from a well-developed meta-evaporite sequence in the Neoproterozoic Duruchaus Formation of central Namibia contain tourmalines with chemical and textural features that are excellent recorders of their environment of formation. Unlike most other meta-evaporitic deposits, this tourmalinite locality exhibits only minor deformation. The tourmalinites form as finely laminated units ca. 1 m thick within a sequence of quartzites, mica schists, dolomitic marbles, and carbonate breccias. Well-preserved pseudomorphs are considered to replace a variety of evaporitic minerals. The meta-sedimentary rocks of the Duruchaus Formation have been interpreted as representing lacustrine, playa lake, fluvial, and non-marine evaporite deposition in an intracontinental rift …

Governing Catastrophes: Security, Health And Humanitarian Assistance, David P. Fidler
Governing Catastrophes: Security, Health And Humanitarian Assistance, David P. Fidler
Articles by Maurer Faculty
Recent catastrophes, and predictions of an increasing potential for more, have stimulated thinking about the best policy responses to these threats. This article explores how security concepts influence catastrophe governance. The article considers how globalization affects thinking about catastrophes and describes ways in which catastrophes have been conceptualized as governance challenges, such as the human rights approach to the provision of health and humanitarian assistance. The article explains how health and humanitarian assistance experienced ‘‘securitization’’ in the post-cold war period, a development that challenges rights-based strategies and creates complex and controversial implications for the prevention, protection and response functions of …
Structural Manipulation Of Pyrrole-Terminated Dendrimers To Create A More Efficient Encapsulation/Release System, Henry Wiggins
Structural Manipulation Of Pyrrole-Terminated Dendrimers To Create A More Efficient Encapsulation/Release System, Henry Wiggins
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This work demonstrates the ability to manipulate the structure of pyrrole-terminated dendrimers by modifying solution conditions which directly affects their encapsulation properties. Investigations were conducted using FTIR and 2D NMR to determine the location of end groups. NMR relaxation studies were conducted at various temperatures and different solution pH to gain an understanding of the relative mobility and rigidity of different areas of the dendrimer. It was found that that the release properties were affected by the solution pH and the presence of salt. Further the effectiveness of retaining molecular guests by oligo-pyrrole terminated dendrimers with a range of oligomer …
Spatial And Temporal Distribution Of Solar Radiation In Louisiana, Michael Ulric Kemp
Spatial And Temporal Distribution Of Solar Radiation In Louisiana, Michael Ulric Kemp
LSU Master's Theses
The purpose of this study is to examine temporal and spatial trends in surface global horizontal solar radiation in Louisiana using a 30-year dataset (1961-1990) of the four stations in Louisiana from the National Solar Radiation Database (NSRD) and a 6-year dataset (2001-2006) of the 25 stations in the Louisiana Agriclimatic Information System (LAIS). Three of the four NSRD stations exhibit a downward linear trend in surface solar radiation over the 30-year period of record, similar to the global trends uncovered in previous studies. Only one station exhibits a slightly upward trend. Surface solar radiation exhibits a positive correlation with …
The Role Of Networks In Labor Markets, Nongnuch Soonthornchawakan
The Role Of Networks In Labor Markets, Nongnuch Soonthornchawakan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Networks of relationships play an important role in the social and economic operation of the labor market. Social connections have been shown to be crucial in influencing the transition and efficiency in the labor market because they can quickly spread information over large segments of society. In particular in “small world” networks everyone can connect to others through very few intermediaries and information can spread far and fast over such a small-world network. The first chapter of this dissertation starts with the formal elements of social network analysis and graph theory. It then provides an overview of the emerging literature …
The Urban Development Of Spanish Colonial Pensacola, 1781-1821, Harry James Wilson
The Urban Development Of Spanish Colonial Pensacola, 1781-1821, Harry James Wilson
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Pensacola evolved through the second Spanish period (1781-1821) from a fledgling military outpost to an increasingly complex urban center. Local and regional demographic trends and environmental conditions prompted Pensacola to grow in a manner that differed from other Spanish colonial urban centers and created in Pensacola an unusual class structure and residential patterning. The primary goal of this dissertation is to show that Pensacola’s residential and landowning patterns never experienced the degree of socioeconomic residential clustering noted in other Spanish colonial urban centers. Social residential clustering was unusual in Spanish Pensacola, and socioeconomic classes and land values varied from lot …
Uncomfortable Performances: Discovering A Subversive Scenario For Rape Discourse, Annamaria Ruffino
Uncomfortable Performances: Discovering A Subversive Scenario For Rape Discourse, Annamaria Ruffino
LSU Master's Theses
Current trends in representations of rape show a new fascination with a rape scenario, a fascination that puts a normative slant on discourse surrounding rape. Normalizing the rape scenario carries various consequences for women; the first and foremost is that it turns the experience of rape into an entertainment commodity, thus causing women’s voices to be appropriated into dominant discourses and the capitalist project. One possible way to circumvent this normalization is to look toward feminist performance strategies in order to subvert this rape scenario and the discourses surrounding it from within. In this thesis, I explore ways to accomplish …

Korean Hurricane Media Discourse Analysis, Youngae Lee
LSU Master's Theses
Presented within this thesis, I have analyzed a particular TV broadcast news discourse called Korean Hurricane Media Discourse (KHMD), which was presented online from YTN, a Korean cable TV news station. The data presents the topic of the Korean refugees who were forced to evacuate to Baton Rouge from New Orleans, after facing the destructions of Hurricane Katrina on August 2005. The methods are Ron Scollon’s TV news frames (1998), van Dijk’s superstructure (1988a and 1988b) and macrostructure (1980), Allan Bell’s news structure (1991), Dell Hymes’s SPEAKING model (1974), and Erving Goffman’s frameworks (1986). Since KHMD is a spoken, plannable …
Incentive And Expectation In Copyright, Sara K. Stadler
Incentive And Expectation In Copyright, Sara K. Stadler
UC Law Journal
In this Article, the author reveals a fundamental flaw in how courts and scholars have come to reason about copyright law. Creators expect to be rewarded for engaging in the labor of creation, and one of those rewards is the bundle of exclusive rights known as "copyright." Congress uses copyright law to give creators the rewards they expect, so as to safeguard their incentives to create. But what if creators expect too much? Must Congress use copyright law to satisfy those expectations, thus preserving what creators claim to require as "incentive?" To date, everyone has assumed that the answer is …
Lawful Peacekeeping: Applicability Of International Humanitarian Law To United Nations Peacekeeping Operations, Jaume Saura
Lawful Peacekeeping: Applicability Of International Humanitarian Law To United Nations Peacekeeping Operations, Jaume Saura
UC Law Journal
The deployment and operation of United Nations peacekeeping missions has been rightly considered one of the most successful initiatives in the history of the organization. In 1988, UN peacekeeping forces were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their contribution to reducing tensions and ending hostilities.
Although the "blue helmets" were not originally envisaged in the Charter of the United Nations, they have brought peace and stability to numerous cases of domestic and international armed conflict.
Notwithstanding the overall success of peacekeeping operations, recent violations of the laws of war by UN peacekeeping forces raise the question of the duty of …
Family Conflicts: The Role Of Religion In Refusing Medical Treatment For Minors, Jennifer E. Chen
Family Conflicts: The Role Of Religion In Refusing Medical Treatment For Minors, Jennifer E. Chen
UC Law Journal
Traditionally, minors are subject to their parents' will when it comes to their own healthcare treatment. While most parents make decisions consistent with societal values that they should obtain the best medical treatment available when their child is critically ill, cases exist where parents have refused medical treatment for their child because of their religious beliefs. Based on constitutional rights, parents have some leeway to make these treatment refusal decisions, and in no published case to date has a child asserted a treatment preference contrary to that of his or parents refusing treatment on religious grounds. Thus, courts have yet …
Principles For Resolving Conflicts Between Trade Secrets And The First Amendment, Pamela Samuelson
Principles For Resolving Conflicts Between Trade Secrets And The First Amendment, Pamela Samuelson
UC Law Journal
Trade secret defendants sometimes raise First Amendment defenses to trade secret misappropriation claims. Some commentators believe that the First Amendment defenses should never be given credence in trade secret cases because trade secrets are property rights and there is no First Amendment right to violate property rights, a theory which the California Supreme Court arguably adopted in DVD Copy Control Association v. Bunner. Other commentators assert that preliminary injunctions in informational trade secret cases should be considered prior restraints on speech, which bear a heavy presumption of unconstitutionality.
This Article asserts that preliminary injunctions in ordinary trade secret cases generally …

An Oracle Without Foresight - Plaintiffs' Arduous Burdens Under U.S. V. Oracle, Amanda J. Parkison Hassid
UC Law Journal
The decision in United States v. Oracle Corp. has the potential to obliterate the government's ability to successfully block certain mergers. The unique set of circumstances in Oracle created little binding precedent on Judge Vaughn Walker, who did not shy away from using this freedom. The court set forth requirements for the government that differed drastically from those proposed in Merger Guidelines promulgated by the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice -requirements that effectively .increased the burden of proof for the government. In addition, the Oracle court disregarded volumes of the government's evidence, requesting instead evidence that would …
Creative Judicial Misunderstanding: Misapplication Of The Public Trust Doctrine In Michigan, Carl Shadi Paganelli
Creative Judicial Misunderstanding: Misapplication Of The Public Trust Doctrine In Michigan, Carl Shadi Paganelli
UC Law Journal
A candid but rational inquiry into the history of the public trust doctrine is essential to understanding a recent Michigan Supreme Court decision that suddenly and unexpectedly took private property for public use without just compensation.
Despite the Latinate allure of its terms-jus publicum and jus privatum-the public trust doctrine has no Roman law origins. It is a creature of the common law. It arose in England to explain the Crown's rights to tidelands and navigable waters. It followed English dominion across the Atlantic, where the fertile imagination of American lawyers unearthed the doctrine's supposed ancient Roman roots.

Beyond Disability Civil Rights, Michael Ashley Stein, Penelope J. S. Stein
UC Law Journal
This Article examines the history of disability law in the United States and the future of disability rights domestically and globally. The author describes the origins, moral salience, and limitations of the current social model of disability rights, and advocates for a human rights-based approach to disability rights. Specifically, the author notes the social model's laudable achievement in promulgating the Americans with Disabilities Act of 199o (ADA). Further, the author emphasizes the positive effects of the ADA on disability rights legislation internationally. However, this Article also presents the weaknesses of the current social model; the author suggests that due to …
Moving Towards A Very Long Engagement: The Effects Of Interactivity On Prolonging Engagement With Online Movie Advertisements, Jesse T. Hoggard
Moving Towards A Very Long Engagement: The Effects Of Interactivity On Prolonging Engagement With Online Movie Advertisements, Jesse T. Hoggard
LSU Master's Theses
An experiment with 421 participants aged 18-45 was conducted to measure the effects of interactivity in an online movie advertising setting, and the effects of interactivity on consumer engagement and other brand metrics. Results from a post-test survey revealed insight into participants’ perceived level of interactivity, and reflected varying levels of attitude towards ad messages, ad recall, mood, and factors in purchasing habits. Results suggested that while interactivity can sometimes hinder advertising recall rates, it can also increase positive attitudes toward the advertisement, click-through rate, intent to purchase, and mood. Practical implications and suggestions for further research are discussed.

Default Production Of Electronically Stored Information Under The Federal Rules Of Civil Procedure: The Requirements Of Rule 34(B), Vlad J. Kroll
UC Law Journal
This Note explains what parties have to do to meet the requirements for default production of electronic discovery under Rule 34(b) of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. Specifically, the author analyzes the meanings of "ordinarily maintained" and "reasonably usable" as used in Rule 34(b). After laying out the background of electronic discovery under the Federal Rules, the author interprets the rule's requirements for default production. First, the author analyzes the rule's language to determine its plain meaning. Then, the author examines the rule's position in the overall scheme of the Federal Rules. Finally, the author examines the rule's drafting …

Letting Katz Out Of The Bag: Cognitive Freedom And Fourth Amendment Fidelity, Christian M. Halliburton
UC Law Journal
What would life be like if it became impossible to keep a secret? We may find out with the advent of a new technology called "Brain Fingerprinting" and other technologies that allow access to our very thoughts. This Article first discusses the advent of technology like Brain Fingerprinting and its kin, and their impact on cognitive autonomy. The Article then posits the question, what would the Constitution have to say about evidentiary inquiries into the mind through the use of such technology? The author argues that current Fourth Amendment jurisprudence, including Katz v. United States, is inadequate to address such …

Characteristics Of Four Highly-Regarded Literacy Teachers In Rural And Urban Elementary Schools, Evan Thomas Ortlieb
Characteristics Of Four Highly-Regarded Literacy Teachers In Rural And Urban Elementary Schools, Evan Thomas Ortlieb
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
How does geography play a role in student learning and teacher instruction? Limited research efforts reveal that the needs of students in rural areas are quite distinct from other settings (Muijs & Reynolds, 2003; Rice, 2003). It is not until exclusive qualities are determined in both rural and urban environments that instructional plans can be geared to each student body. Addressing these sociocultural issues is crucial with an increasingly diverse population of students nationwide. Spradley’s (1980) Developmental Research Sequence and ethnographic interviews of four classroom teachers within rural and urban schools are the primary methods utilized throughout this inquiry. The …
