Executable System Architecting Using Systems Modeling Language In Conjunction With Colored Petri Nets - A Demonstration Using The Geoss Network Centric System, Renzhong Wang
Masters Theses
"Models and simulation furnish abstractions to manage complexities allowing engineers to visualize the proposed system and to analyze and validate system behavior before constructing it. Unified Modeling Language (UML) and its systems engineering extension, Systems Modeling Language (SysML), provide a rich set of diagrams for systems specification. However, the lack of executable semantics of such notations limits the capability of analyzing and verifying defined specifications. This research has developed an executable system architecting framework based on SysML-CPN transformation, which introduces dynamic model analysis into SysML modeling by mapping SysML notations to Colored Petri Net (CPN), a graphical language for system …
A Quantitative Study Of Gene Identification Techniques Based On Evolutionary Rationales, Cyriac Kandoth
A Quantitative Study Of Gene Identification Techniques Based On Evolutionary Rationales, Cyriac Kandoth
Masters Theses
"Current gene identification (GI) techniques typically rely on matching biological or chemical properties of specific genes, specific species, specific ecotypes, etc...In this thesis, a new automated GI technique is proposed, and compared against another computer-based technique proposed earlier. Both methods utilize EST data available from NCBI databases to discover previously unknown genes. The newly proposed method identifies one gene family at a time and is based on a distinctive negative selection pattern (NSP) of differences, which is seen between the coding regions of gene family members. The other technique, called ESTminer, attempts genome-wide gene family identification for any organism, by …
A Network Infrastructure For Real-Time Monitoring Of Campus Energy Consumption, Sandeep Kunchum
A Network Infrastructure For Real-Time Monitoring Of Campus Energy Consumption, Sandeep Kunchum
Masters Theses
"Pressing environmental concerns and rising energy costs have led many organizations to carefully review their energy consumption. Conservation requires that energy use be monitored accurately and continuously, to identify areas with higher energy consumption. Lighting has repeatedly been identified as such an area. A simple, yet effective method for reducing lighting energy consumption is retrofitting existing light fixtures with modern energy-efficient versions. The University of Missouri-Rolla is currently carrying out a lighting retrofit of all fixtures on campus. The pilot building for this project is McNutt Hall, as it has the single highest consumption of lighting energy. The results of …
Vision Based Leader-Follower Formation Control For Mobile Robots, Gerard Sequeira
Vision Based Leader-Follower Formation Control For Mobile Robots, Gerard Sequeira
Masters Theses
"Creating systems with multiple autonomous vehicles places severe demands on the design of control schemes. Robot formation control plays a vital role in coordinating robots. As the number of members in a system rise, the complexity of each member increases. There is a proportional increase in the quantity and complexity of onboard sensing, control and computation. This thesis investigates the control of a group of mobile robots consisting of a leader and several followers to maintain a desired geometric formation"--Abstract, page iii.
Cognitive Biases In Risk Management, William Thomas Siefert
Cognitive Biases In Risk Management, William Thomas Siefert
Masters Theses
"This thesis contends that most Risk Management/Mitigation programs fail to be as effective as they could be due to a number of mostly overlooked drivers, such as motivation and cognitive biases. The issue of cognitive biases is very seldom addressed. When questioned, most engineers purport to not have any biases. They insist that they use only logic, reasoning, and math to make decisions. A set of data was collected and reviewed for this thesis. The data presented shows that cognitive biases do affect the risk management/mitigation process. Knowledge of these biases and their potential impact on a project will lead …
A Software Defined Radio For Research Into Cognitive Radio, Jason Michael Pratt
A Software Defined Radio For Research Into Cognitive Radio, Jason Michael Pratt
Masters Theses
Software defined radios are capable of transmitting and receiving signals over a broad range of frequencies, and can alter their carrier frequency, modulation scheme, and power level by changing the software controlling the radio. Because of these capabilities, a software defined radio is the necessary platform for research into cognitive radio. The aim of cognitive radio is to more fully utilize the RF spectrum by allowing wireless communication systems to scan the spectrum for unused frequency bands and dynamically establish communication over one of those unused bands. This thesis gives a brief introduction into cognitive radio, and currently existing software …

Masters Theses
"Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) are an integration of computing and physical processes. Information flow is an inherent property of CPSs and is of particular interest at their cyber-physical boundaries. This thesis focuses on discovering information flow properties and proposes a process to model the information flow in CPSs. A Cooperating FACTS Power System serves as a tangible example to illustrate modeling information flow using the proposed process. The proposed process can be used to model the information flow security, help analyze current information flow security requirements, and aid in the design of further security policies in CPS"--Abstract, page iii.
Application Of Hybrid Arq To Controller Area Networks, Krishna Chaitanya Emani
Application Of Hybrid Arq To Controller Area Networks, Krishna Chaitanya Emani
Masters Theses
"This thesis proposes two types of Hybrid Automatic Repeat reQuest (HARQ) schemes for the Controller Area Network (CAN) to combat Electro-Magnetic Interference (EMI) and improve network efficiency. The proposed HARQ schemes encode the original CAN data frames by a Reed-Solomon (R-S) code so that burst errors due to EMI may be corrected at the receive nodes. Therefore, the probability of error frames is reduced, thereby reducing the probability of retransmission. Hence, the network efficiency of the system is improved"--Abstract, page iii.

A Computational Theory For The Generation Of Solutions During Early Conceptual Design, Cari R. Bryant
A Computational Theory For The Generation Of Solutions During Early Conceptual Design, Cari R. Bryant
Doctoral Dissertations
"Advancement in technology is usually made by building on previous experiences and learning from past successes and failures. However, knowledge transfer in the broad field of product design is often difficult to accomplish. Research has shown that successful component configurations, observed from existing products, can be dissected and stored for reuse; but few computational tools exist to assist designers during the conceptual phase of design. Many well-known manual methods (e.g. brainstorming, intrinsic and extrinsic searches, and morphological analysis) rely heavily on individual bias and experience and are often time intensive, laborious tasks that may not catch solutions that are functionally …

Modeling Network Traffic On A Global Network-Centric System With Artificial Neural Networks, Douglas K. Swift
Modeling Network Traffic On A Global Network-Centric System With Artificial Neural Networks, Douglas K. Swift
Doctoral Dissertations
"This dissertation proposes a new methodology for modeling and predicting network traffic. It features an adaptive architecture based on artificial neural networks and is especially suited for large-scale, global, network-centric systems. Accurate characterization and prediction of network traffic is essential for network resource sizing and real-time network traffic management. As networks continue to increase in size and complexity, the task has become increasingly difficult and current methodology is not sufficiently adaptable or scaleable. Current methods model network traffic with express mathematical equations which are not easily maintained or adjusted. The accuracy of these models is based on detailed characterization of …

Naming Rights: Attribution And Law, Rebecca Tushnet
Naming Rights: Attribution And Law, Rebecca Tushnet
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
This article identifies three basic frameworks that intellectual property theorists have used to support giving authors a right to attribution: authorial high-protectionism, which is concerned with respecting the unique role of authors; copyright low-protectionism, which is concerned with increasing access to copyrighted works and wishes to substitute credit for total control; and trademark-style consumer protectionism, which is concerned with giving consumers truthful and useful information about the works they choose. I examine these rationales, and the tensions between them, and conclude that attribution rights cannot fulfill their apparent promise to unite differing visions of intellectual property. Legitimate claims for credit …
Mris And The Perception Of Risk, Steven Goldberg
Mris And The Perception Of Risk, Steven Goldberg
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
The most important safety decision concerning MRIs was to change the name of the procedure. In the late 1970s, the procedure known as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) became magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) because of the negative connotations the word “nuclear” invited. The change was understandable since MRIs do not expose patients to dangerous radiation: “nuclear” was in the original name because basic research on the atomic nucleus led to the development of MRIs. The main cost of the name change was to obscure the important link between basic research and useful medical technologies.
In recent years, however, MRIs, a generally …
Three Pictures Of Contract: Duty, Power And Compound Rule, Gregory Klass
Three Pictures Of Contract: Duty, Power And Compound Rule, Gregory Klass
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
A fundamental divide among theories of contract law is between those that picture contract as a power and those that picture it as a duty. On the power-conferring picture, contracting is a sort of legislative act, in which persons determine what law will apply to their transaction. On the duty-imposing picture, contract law puts duties on persons entering into agreements for consideration whether they want them or not. Until now, very little attention has been paid to the problem of how to tell whether a given rule is power conferring or duty imposing -- a question that should lie at …
Global Regulatory Strategies For Tobacco Control, Lawrence O. Gostin
Global Regulatory Strategies For Tobacco Control, Lawrence O. Gostin
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Recent tobacco control regulation in North America and Western Europe has had a salutary effect, even if smoking remains a pressing public health hazard. But in the 21st century, the tobacco industry has quietly moved its locus of activity to lucrative, emerging markets: the vast populations in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, and Latin America. The poorest, least educated, and sickest people on earth inhabit these regions. "Big Tobacco's" new marketing strategy will cause untold morbidity for the world's most vulnerable.
However, there are a variety of effective tobacco control policies that nations can and should enact. The World Health Organization …
