Blogging: Rants, Raves, And Random Thoughts, Linda Jones
The Christian Librarian
Unless you have been asleep or just born in the past three years, you will have found many library articles touting the growth and value of the weblog.1 You may also have attended one of the many technology/library conferences, such as Computers in Libraries, and even an ACL Conference and gone to a presentation on blogs. You will have heard that you must blog, and in conjunction use RSS – whatever that is – if you wish to communicate more effectively with your patrons, your staff, or anyone else.2 Hopping on the blogging bandwagon can “save” your institution, make you …

Managing Up: Subtle But Effective Communication With The “Powers That Be”, Lindsay L. Van Sicklen
Managing Up: Subtle But Effective Communication With The “Powers That Be”, Lindsay L. Van Sicklen
The Christian Librarian
There are plenty of resources on managing employees but only in recent years has there been an emphasis on managing those to whom we report. The article entitled “Social Styles and the Art of Managing Up” by John R. Darling published in the Journal of Academic Librarianship in 1987 was the springboard for a lively discussion that included seven library directors and eight individuals from a variety of positions.
Preparing For Abhe Accreditation: Suggestions For Essential Elements 7 And 11, Carol Reid
Preparing For Abhe Accreditation: Suggestions For Essential Elements 7 And 11, Carol Reid
The Christian Librarian
What can you do to bring your library up to the ABHE Standards for Accreditation? At the 2006 ACL Conference, a panel of librarians (Patty Agee, Tony Garrett, and Carol Reid) looked at two essential elements of the requirements to see how our libraries measured up. Our areas were the library’s relationships with the faculty (essential element number seven) and with the information technology personnel on our campuses (number eleven). After examining the new Library Guidelines for ABHE Colleges and Universities, which are posted on the ACL website as a member benefit under the Bible College section link, we graded …
William Tyndale As An Evangelical Theologian, Donald Dean Smeeton Ph.D.
William Tyndale As An Evangelical Theologian, Donald Dean Smeeton Ph.D.
The Christian Librarian
William Tyndale is rightly remembered as a sixteenth century Bible translator, but he was also a significant contributor to the formation of the English language and, more importantly, he was a theologian. This article highlights Tyndale’s contribution in each of these three areas and shows that his theology is compatible with ACL’s Statement of Faith. His theology motivated and guided his work as a translator and as a polemical and exegetical theologian.
An Unhealthy Case Of Mold, Mary S. Lane
An Unhealthy Case Of Mold, Mary S. Lane
The Christian Librarian
Mold is a serious problem which threatens the well-being of both collections and staff. Preventative maintenance and a good disaster plan are the most effective way of handling mold. However, unforeseen circumstances can infect a library; in which case, librarians must be able to recognize and treat the problem immediately. Finances can affect the manner in which the mold is cleaned. Librarians need to be aware of a variety of options open to them, as well as, a variety of resources upon whom to call in the event of a breakout. A low budget process is presented as an alternative …

Rural Libraries Of Romania, Libraries And The Information Infrastructure Of Rural Romania, Mary Ann Buhler
The Christian Librarian
In May 2005 faculty and students from Emporia State University and Ball State University visited Lunca Ilvei, a small mountain village in rural Romania, to gather qualitative information on its information infrastructure. Researchers interviewed diverse village residents, taking field notes, documenting field observations, and conducting surveys, all recorded photographically.
This paper focuses on Lunca Ilvei’s libraries and how they fit into the village’s information structure. It reports on the research findings and suggests ways to help village residents address their information needs.
A Christian Librarians Response To Government Secrecy, Dora Wagner
A Christian Librarians Response To Government Secrecy, Dora Wagner
The Christian Librarian
The nature of Christian librarianship requires professionals to remain aware of current political decisions made in our government that directly affect the public’s access to relevant information. Utilizing past literature concerning what it means to practice Christian librarianship and exploring the current administrations’ actions regarding The Freedom of Information Act, the author concludes the Christian library community must educate itself and its patrons and demand honesty and integrity from the government.

As part of a lecture series given at the International Institute of Human Rights, in Strasbourg, France, in July 2003, the author presents an overview of the history of international human rights law. The author explores numerous religious, political, cultural, philosophical, economic and intellectual movements throughout history that have informed and guided the development of human rights law on the global stage. In doing so, the author examines the moral and ethical dimensions which underpin international human rights law, including what she defines as the innate human desire for protection from abuse. The author highlights the world's most significant historical …

A New Approach To The Toxicity Testing Of Carbon-Based Nanomaterials: The Clonogenic Assay, Eva Herzog, Alan Casey, Fiona Lyng, Gordon Chambers, Hugh Byrne, Maria Davoren
Articles
The cellular toxicity of three types of carbon nanoparticles, namely HiPco® single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT), arc dischargeSWCNTand Printex 90 carbon black nanoparticles, was studied on three different cell models including the human alveolar carcinoma epithelial cell line (A549), the normal human bronchial epithelial cell line (BEAS-2B) and the human keratinocyte cell line (HaCaT) using the clonogenic assay. Carbon nanomaterials are known to interact with colorimetric indicator dyes frequently used in cytotoxicity assays. By employing the clonogenic assay, any such interactions could be avoided, allowing a more reliable method for the in vitro toxicity assessment of carbon-based nanoparticles. It could be shown …

Smoke And Mirrors: A Cultural-Psychological Analysis Of Tobacco Use, Michael Melczak
Smoke And Mirrors: A Cultural-Psychological Analysis Of Tobacco Use, Michael Melczak
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This theoretical dissertation explores tobacco use from the perspectives of social constructivism and phenomenological depth psychology. In Part I, tobacco use is described as a cultural artifact, and transformations in tobacco use are traced through three different cultural contexts or "worlds": the indigenous or aboriginal worldview, the European and American worldview of the 17th through mid-19th centuries, and the modern American worldview (or "modernity"). In each of these worldviews, the cultural context informed and influenced (or reflected and reproduced) understandings of tobacco use. One notices the transformation of tobacco use, for example, from a god to a commodity and from …

The authors discuss the changing library needs of law students as computers, technology, and legal publishing evolve. In order to track the evolving needs of students, the authors discuss ways that librarians can survey students and explain how focus groups and usability tests can provide further insights regarding students’ research skills and information needs. The article examines the literature regarding information literacy and suggests minimum standards for legal information literacy upon graduation, and the authors suggest new services that law librarians could create for law students. Next the authors examine the recent literature about Library 2.0 services, and offer suggestions …

A Framework For Aligning Testing And Development, Colin Onita, Jasbir Dhaliwal
Faculty Publications
Strategic alignment between an organization’s business strategy/capabilities and those of its information technology (IT) unit has been researched extensively and has found significant application in industry in the last decade. Given the critical interdependencies between development and testing groups within a corporate IT unit, this paper presents a similar alignment model for ensuring that these two functions work together effectively in meeting corporate IT goals pertaining to building new systems. This development-testing alignment (DTA) model is described and an overarching research framework for investigating its value and application is presented.

Sudan: A Survey Of Terrorism And Human Rights, Arika Long
Human Rights & Human Welfare
Sudan is a primary example of a country dominated by terror and human rights violations. Upon the release of Amnesty International’s 2007 annual report, Secretary General Khan described the continuing conflict in Sudan's Darfur region as a “bleeding wound on the world’s conscience.” In the report, the authors declare that the world has been “impotent” in the face of major crises like Darfur. They state that policies linked to the “War on Terror” are creating a more polarized and dangerous world, with grave effects in Sudan. In addition to the terror and human rights violations permeating the North, frustration also …
Totalitarianism: The Case Of Turkmenistan, Hayden Gore
Totalitarianism: The Case Of Turkmenistan, Hayden Gore
Human Rights & Human Welfare
With the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991, Saparmurat Niyazov, the former First Secretary of the Communist Party of Turkmenistan and self-styled “Turkmenbashi” (Father of All Turkmen), became the country’s first president, quickly fashioning Turkmenistan into one of the most repressive regimes in the world. Declared president-for-life after a dubious parliamentary election in which he selected all of the candidates, Niyazov has created a Stalinistic personality cult to glorify his image and to solidify his control over the state. His “reforms” have outlawed political dissent, marginalized ethnic and religious minorities, gutted the public health system, and enforced a campaign …
The Health Crisis In Russia, Christine Danton
The Health Crisis In Russia, Christine Danton
Human Rights & Human Welfare
A health crisis has emerged in Russia due to declining health and inadequate health care. The crisis is so severe that the term “disappearing population” has been applied to Russia due to a high death rate, low birth rate, and low life expectancy among its people. These factors continue to worsen due to inefficiency and a lack of resources throughout the health care system. The government has been slow to respond to the current crisis, often ignoring calls to reform the system and sometimes passing inappropriate measures. Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and medical professionals report there is an urgent need to …
Violations Of Human Rights During Military Operations In Chechnya, Federico Sperotto
Violations Of Human Rights During Military Operations In Chechnya, Federico Sperotto
Human Rights & Human Welfare
The case-law of the European Court of Human Rights concerning violations of human rights law during armed conflict has been extended after the first decisions on cases arose from violations, committed during the war in Chechnya between 1999 and 2000. In the words of the Court, at that time the situation called for exceptional measures, in order to regain control over the Republic and suppress an illegal armed insurgency. The Court has been ready to admit those measures, including the deployment of army units equipped with heavy combat weapons, military aviation and artillery, were necessary to counter the aggressiveness of …

Quoting the Eighteenth Century philosopher Charles de Secondat Montesquieu, “We are free because we live under civil laws.”
In the summer of 2006 lawyers and businessmen in the Dominican Republic, the United States and most of Central America experienced full implementation of the Dominican Republic – Central America Free Trade Agreement (hereinafter CAFTA). This regional trade agreement, following on the general model of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the parameters of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), is intended to establish a comprehensive legal regime to reduce and eventually eliminate most national barriers to the …
Predicting Repeated Sexual Behavior Problems Among Youth: A Hierarchically Optimal Classification Tree Analysis, David J. Morgan
Predicting Repeated Sexual Behavior Problems Among Youth: A Hierarchically Optimal Classification Tree Analysis, David J. Morgan
Dissertations
This study examined characteristics of youth with sexual behavior problems (N = 251) followed over approximately two years and applied Classification Tree Analysis (CTA) via Optimal Data Analysis (ODA) to produce a hierarchically optimal classification model to predict recurrence of SBP over time. This study was designed to address problems with clinical judgment leading to inaccurate diagnosis and in some cases, incorrect treatment or placement of the youth by ascertaining if an actuarial model designed to optimize classification accuracy might be more helpful in directing diagnosis and treatment for these youth. Results suggest initial event severity influences the potential for …
Linking Research And Policy: The Case Of Ghana's Rice Trade Policy, Aharon Degrassi
Linking Research And Policy: The Case Of Ghana's Rice Trade Policy, Aharon Degrassi
Faculty Publications, Geography
Agricultural trade policies, in particular import tariffs to protect domestic production, constitute a highly contested field of agricultural policy. In view of the recent focus on “evidence-based policy making†in the international development debate, the question arises as to which extent research-based evidence is used in such policy decisions, and which role research plays as compared to other political factors. Against this background, this paper seeks to examine and explain research-policy linkages in the case of rice tariff reform in Ghana. It is based on literature reviews and 70 interviews. The paper uses a historical cultural political economy approach, and …
