Interrupting Ethnographic Spectacles In Eric Valli's Himalaya, Puspa Damai Jan 2007

Interrupting Ethnographic Spectacles In Eric Valli's Himalaya, Puspa Damai

English Faculty Research

How can we talk about "postcoloniality" in relation to Nepal, which, even though it has never been foreign to Western fantasies about the exotic, was never formally colonized? One of the ways could be to create narratives and deploy images - as has been done by Eric Valli in his popular film Himalaya- that foreground geographically remote and ethnically and politically marginalized people of the nation. And yet, this article argues, such an attempt as Himalaya could easily fall into the same trap as grips orientalist ethnography that seeks to generate spectacles of the other for its own pleasure. …

In-Situ Measurement And Characterization Of Cloud Particles Using Digital In-Line Holography, Jacob P. Fugal Jan 2007

In-Situ Measurement And Characterization Of Cloud Particles Using Digital In-Line Holography, Jacob P. Fugal

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Satellite measurement validations, climate models, atmospheric radiative transfer models and cloud models, all depend on accurate measurements of cloud particle size distributions, number densities, spatial distributions, and other parameters relevant to cloud microphysical processes. And many airborne instruments designed to measure size distributions and concentrations of cloud particles have large uncertainties in measuring number densities and size distributions of small ice crystals. HOLODEC (Holographic Detector for Clouds) is a new instrument that does not have many of these uncertainties and makes possible measurements that other probes have never made. The advantages of HOLODEC are inherent to the holographic method.

Hit And Miss: Leverage, Sacrifice, And Refusal To Deal In The Supreme Court Decision In Trinko, Nicholas Economides Jan 2007

Hit And Miss: Leverage, Sacrifice, And Refusal To Deal In The Supreme Court Decision In Trinko, Nicholas Economides

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

Under the rules of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, incumbent local exchange carriers, including Verizon, were obligated to lease parts of their local telecommunications network to any firm, at "cost plus a reasonable profit" prices, that could combine them at will, add retailing services, and sell local telecommunication service as a rival to the incumbent. AT&T, an entrant into the local telecommunications market, leased parts of Verizon's network. Curtis Trinko, a local telecommunications services customer of AT&T, sued Verizon, alleging various anti-competitive actions of Verizon against AT&T, including that Verizon raised the costs of AT&T, its downstream retail rival. The …

Where Did All These Books Come From? The Publishing Industry And American Intellectual Life, Maro N. Asadoorian Jan 2007

Where Did All These Books Come From? The Publishing Industry And American Intellectual Life, Maro N. Asadoorian

Honors Theses

The American book publishing industry shapes the character of American intellectual life. While the newspaper and television industries have been accused of and investigated for bias and lowering America’s intellectual standards, book publishing has gone largely unexamined by scholars. The existing studies of the publishing industry have focused on finance, procedure and history. “There are few ‘theories’ of publishing – efforts to understand the ‘whys’ as well as the ‘hows.’ Few scholarly scientists have devoted significant scholarly attention to publishing” (Altbach and Hoshino, xiii). There are many possible reasons for this lacuna. First, there is a perception that books have …

An Exploratory Study Of Pet Raising And Health Of The Elderly People In Hong Kong, Cheung Ming, Alfred Chan, Kam Wing, Kevin Cheung, Lam Fat Lo

APIAS Monograph 專題論文

Introduction:

Pets such as dogs, cats and fish were popular in many other countries (Marx et al., 1988; Gammonley, 1991; Brodie & Biley, 1999; PIAS, 2002). In Hong Kong, pet owners increased to 0.26 million (Census and Statistics Department, 2006). Dating back to 1980s, a research study reported the association between pet ownerships and health benefits for humans (McNicholas et al., 2005). According to the report, domesticated pets brought a sense of companionship and provided pet owners with pleasure. These pets could be tools for enhancing human social relationship and could also provide their owners with emotional comfort. Recent studies …

Overcoming The United States' Policy On The Exclusion Of Hivpositive Noncitizens: How Asylum Cases Are Beginning To Open Previously Locked Doors, Amy Vaughn Jan 2007

Overcoming The United States' Policy On The Exclusion Of Hivpositive Noncitizens: How Asylum Cases Are Beginning To Open Previously Locked Doors, Amy Vaughn

Nebraska Anthropologist

In 1987, the United States Congress enacted a policy that prohibited HIV-positive noncitizens from entering the United States for both temporary visits and immigration. Nearly two decades later, the policy still stands, making the United States one of only a handful of countries that still enforces such an exclusionary policy. Several international health organizations, including the World Health Organization, have condemned the HIV ban as "irrational and without public health justification" (Goldberg 1998). In 1993, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services attempted to remove HIV from the exclusion list based on the fact that it is not transmitted …

Mastery Learning And The Essentials Of Critical Care Orientation : A Heuristic Participant Evaluation, Mitchell J. Seal Jan 2007

Mastery Learning And The Essentials Of Critical Care Orientation : A Heuristic Participant Evaluation, Mitchell J. Seal

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study employed a heuristic -participant evaluation of the instruction of the web-based Essentials of Critical Care Orientation (ECCO) program using two research questions: (1) How well does the ECCO adhere to Bloom's theory of mastery learning and instruction; and (2) What effect, if any, does this have on the participant RN? Evaluation findings demonstrated that the ECCO is 66 hours of expository instruction with little to no meaningful feedback, correction, or enrichment activity, is not well aligned, and has significant design flaws related to objectives and transfer of instruction and to the processes of instruction. This results in the …

Lifting The Veil On Traditional White Weddings, Kelly Iceton Jan 2007

Lifting The Veil On Traditional White Weddings, Kelly Iceton

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

The topic for my thesis is a critique of traditional American "white" weddings and the associated fairytale imagery using a materialist feminist approach. The idea for this topic came to fruition after a classroom discussion regarding a single patriarchal wedding custom sparked my interest in researching the ways in which weddings validate and reinforce traditions that symbolize women's secondary status in society. I wanted to explore each aspect of the mainstream American wedding- the traditional, "white" wedding. Upon delving into the scholarly research on the subject, it became apparent that only a few ctitical examinations of weddings existed and no …

Consequently, a general review of available research was conducted to ascertain what other closely related fields say about student satisfaction during doctoral training. As the document progresses, a variety of issues including funding and mentoring as well as considerations for multicultural and ethical issues as they relate to the topic are investigated. A theoretical model of what constitutes a satisfying experience for doctoral training in school psychology is provided. A program specific evaluation was conducted of the …

Grounded Theory : Latino Mental Health Providers' Perceptions Of The Mental Health Beliefs Of Latino Clients, Marcelle Santiago-Serrano

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

This study explores the mental health beliefs of Latinos through the eyes of Latino Mental Health Providers. Many Latinos have a view of psychologists as a "healer." This view was explored relative to that of the cognitive behavioral approach, which has a strong emphasis on its self-help approach to therapy. In addition to its self-help qualities, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is recognized for its effectiveness in the mental health treatment of diverse ethnic/cultural populations. However, the CBT philosophy may seem at times, to be contradictory to many Latinos' beliefs that the therapist's role is as a "healer." A five item …
