Jessica Lunsford’s father awoke on February 24, 2005 to discover his nine-year-old daughter was missing. John Couey, Jessica’s neighbor, had entered their home at 1:00 AM the previous night and abducted the little girl. After sexually assaulting her, he dug a hole and buried her alive. A forty-nine-year-old homeless man, Brian Mitchell, abducted fifteen-year-old Elizabeth Smart at knifepoint from her bedroom in an affluent district of Salt Lake City. She was found after nine months of sexual abuse, deprivation, and threats to her life. The scruffy drifter was arrested and awaits trial.

A Rake Receiver Employing Maximal Ratio Combining (Mrc) Without Channel Estimation For Uwb Communications, Randall Tombaugh Jan 2007

A Rake Receiver Employing Maximal Ratio Combining (Mrc) Without Channel Estimation For Uwb Communications, Randall Tombaugh

All Volumes (2001-2008)

An alternative method to channel estimation is presented as a means of supplying a RAKE receiver with the coefficients for Maximal Ratio Combining (MRC). The proposed RAKE receiver utilizes Time-Hopping Pulse Position Modulation (TH-PPM), and is specifically designed to be used in Ultra Wideband (UWB) communication systems in which channel estimation becomes problematic because of the high sampling rate required. The MRC coefficients are determined by a simple process of averaging the received energy for a given correlator finger over the course of a pilot sequence of P pulses. Performance of the proposed RAKE receiver is investigated through simulation using …

Attachment Bond, Parental Death, And Parental Divorce As Predictive Variables Of Depression, Jason R. Baker Jan 2007

Attachment Bond, Parental Death, And Parental Divorce As Predictive Variables Of Depression, Jason R. Baker

Master's Theses and Capstones

Discussions regarding the topics of attachment and loss are ubiquitous and cannot be avoided. Losing a loved one---especially a parent---to death or divorce is difficult at any age, perhaps most difficult during the age of adolescence. Depression is a common product of such loss. A study was conducted that attempted to look at the quality of attachment between the child and primary caregiver, along with the any possible parent loss, and their implications for the prevalence of depression. Data on 170 students at a major university in the Northeast was collected. A moderately strong negative correlation existed between attachment and …

The Effect Of Involvement On Collegiate Binge Drinking: An Examination Of Competing Social Theories, Lauren Rinaldi Magrath Jan 2007

The Effect Of Involvement On Collegiate Binge Drinking: An Examination Of Competing Social Theories, Lauren Rinaldi Magrath

Master's Theses and Capstones

The perils of collegiate binge drinking are well documented in popular media, frequently in light of athletic or Greek participation. This study was designed to better understand relationships between an expanded list of involvements and the frequency of binging by applying competing theories. Social bond theory predicts all conventional involvements will serve to prevent deviant behavior. In contrast, subcultural theory suggests some involvements will serve to support deviance. Using the College Alcohol Study and OLS regression, this study examined the relationship between involvements and binging, and if the processes operate by gender. The study found some results in alignment with …

The Dynamic Relationship Of Sentence Complexity, Childhood Stuttering, And Grammatical Development, Kimberly R. Bauerly Jan 2007

The Dynamic Relationship Of Sentence Complexity, Childhood Stuttering, And Grammatical Development, Kimberly R. Bauerly

Master's Theses and Capstones

The present study was conducted to determine if the relationship between grammatical complexity and childhood stuttering is influenced by grammatical development. The study was cross-sectional in design and observed the spontaneous speech of six children who stutter ranging in age from 32 to 46 months. The first 100 utterances from each subject's sample were scored using Scarborough's (1990) Index of Productive Syntax (IPSyn) and given a numerical score which was used as an indicator of grammatical development in place of the child's age. The first one-hundred sentences containing a noun and verb in subject-predicate relationship were extracted from each sample …

Software-Defined Radio Using Labview And The Pc Sound Card: A Teaching Platform For Digital Communications, Jose Carlos Lanzoni Jan 2007

Software-Defined Radio Using Labview And The Pc Sound Card: A Teaching Platform For Digital Communications, Jose Carlos Lanzoni

Master's Theses and Capstones

Different modulation techniques and protocols require a standard communications laboratory for engineering courses to be equipped with a broad set of equipment, tools and accessories. However, the high costs involved in a hardware-based laboratory can become prohibitively expensive for many institutions. Software simulations alone can replicate most real-world applications with much lower costs. Nevertheless, they do not replace the real-world feeling provided by hardware-based systems, which can produce and receive physical signals to and from the exterior media.

Advances in computer technology are allowing software-defined radio (SDR) concepts to be applied in many areas of communications. In this type of …

Teaching And Learning Social Work Practice Skills Through The Use Of Triads, Jeanette Harder

Social Work Faculty Publications

This article presents a structured way to teach and learn social work practice skills in an undergraduate or foundation practice class. Triads provide the opportunity for students to develop practice skills and confidence as they experience firsthand the role of a social work practitioner. Written from both the perspective of the instructor and the student, this article examines how triads can be used to teach, apply, and reinforce skills in each of seven areas of the problem-solving model: engagement, assessment, planning/contracting, intervention, evaluation, closing, and follow-up, with additional opportunity given to applying skills related to social work values, ethics, and …

From Habermas To "Get Rich Or Die Tryin": Hip Hop, The Telecommunications Act Of 1996, And The Black Public Sphere, Akilah N. Folami

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

This Article explores the manner in which gangsta rappers, who are primarily young urban Black' men, navigate the mass media and rap's commercialization of the gangsta image to continue to provide seeds of political expression and resistance to that image. While other scholars have considered the political nature of rap in the context of the First Amendment, this Article's approach is unique in that it is the first to explore such concepts through the lenses of Habermas' ideal public sphere and those of his critics. Mhile many have written gangsta rap off as being commercially co-opted or useless given its …

Information Technologies And Civic Engagement: Perspectives From Librarianship And Planning, Aimée C. Quinn, Laxmi Ramasubramanian Jan 2007

Information Technologies And Civic Engagement: Perspectives From Librarianship And Planning, Aimée C. Quinn, Laxmi Ramasubramanian

Library Scholarship

Urban planning and librarianship are parallel fields in many ways. Both have theoretical and practical underpinnings driving each discipline; are interdisciplinary in focus; and both professions gather and disseminate information to stakeholders. Essential to the success of each discipline is an engaged user population. The authors use a case study from the Village of Oak Park to examine and reflect upon the effect of the Internet and other technologies in the public's ability to participate in an open planning process. The Village of Oak Park is known for its architectural heritage and outspoken community. Within its 4.5 square miles live …

ETSU Faculty Works

The management of speech impairment of unknown origin in children requires SLPs to make important clinical decisions around assessment, analysis, diagnosis and intervention. Ideally, clinicians should be guided in their decision making by evidence. Over thirty years ago, this was a relatively straightforward task. Most children’s speech problems were assessed, analysed and treated from an articulation perspective. Since the paradigm shift from articulation to phonology, clinical decision making has become more challenging. This challenge is in part due to the increase in possible approaches. This short course will outline the application of ten intervention approaches to one child and will …

The Core Plan Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Central City: Shifting Control Of Regional Mass Transit To The Central City, Jeffrey Baltruzak Jan 2007

The Core Plan Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Central City: Shifting Control Of Regional Mass Transit To The Central City, Jeffrey Baltruzak

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “Mass transit in the United States is moribund: it plays a meaningful transportation role in only a handful of American regions. It is clear that the status quo—where state-created special-purpose districts (SPDs) provide limited regional mass transit options and new mass transit construction progresses at a glacial pace—is a colossal failure. This failure necessitates a new model of mass transit ownership and management. It is time for the region’s central city to own and operate the region’s mass transit system extraterritorially, free from significant control by the outer cities (the suburbs) and the state. This article calls this arrangement …

Emerson Family Values: Claims To Duration And Renewal In American Narratives Of Divorce, Love And Marriage, Mae Kuykendall Jan 2007

Emerson Family Values: Claims To Duration And Renewal In American Narratives Of Divorce, Love And Marriage, Mae Kuykendall

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

Themes in American family life contain contradictions between a public narrative of duration and a private narrative of renewal. This seeming conflict in values, in combination with a high divorce rate, might be thought to indicate that the marital vows are a culturally hollow ceremony. In fact, Americans' disposition in matters of family seemingly to waver between vows of duration and belief in renewal can be accounted for as well as given moral weight by the thinking and influence of Ralph Waldo Emerson. Dismissed at times as an idealist, a proponent of unthinking American individualism, and an irresponsible wordsmith, Emerson …

An Eye-Opening Approach To Developing And Communicating Integrated Environmental Assessments, Todd R. Lookingbill, William C. Dennison, Tim J.B. Carruthers, Jane M. Hawkey, Shawn L. Carter

Geography and the Environment Faculty Publications

Communication among managers, the public, and scientists is the key to successful ecosystem management; however, the varied perspectives and interests of these groups can make such communication difficult. One way to achieve effective communication is to develop a common knowledge base by combining syntheses of key scientific results with information-rich visual elements. Within a management landscape, integrated environmental assessments provide a useful framework for evaluating resources and directing management efforts. The integrated assessment process involves (1) initial investigation, (2) development of a conceptual framework, (3) data navigation, (4) environmental report cards, and (5) science communication. Each step requires the synthesis …
