The Imagination Of James Boyd White, Lee C. Bollinger Jan 2007

The Imagination Of James Boyd White, Lee C. Bollinger

Faculty Scholarship

For several decades, James Boyd White has been a unique voice in the law. It is a voice of extraordinary intellectual range, of erudition, and of deep commitment to a life of self-understanding and of humane values. His point of access is language – all language, in every context. Armed by a lifetime of thought about words, he justifiably has regarded no field or discipline or communicative activity as foreign and outside his ken. Whoever reads him must feel his sense of intellectual empowerment that our world, sectioned as it is by expertise, would deny us.

Proteinparser:A Community Based Tool For The Generation Of A Detailed Protein Consensus And Fasta Output, Barry Ryan, Ronan Barrett Jan 2007

Proteinparser:A Community Based Tool For The Generation Of A Detailed Protein Consensus And Fasta Output, Barry Ryan, Ronan Barrett

Articles

Comparison of bioinformatic data is a common application in the life sciences and beyond. In this communication, a novel Java based software tool, ProteinParser, is outlined. This soft- ware tool calculates a detailed consensus, or most common, amino acid at a given position in an aligned protein set, whilst also generating a full consensus protein FASTA output. A second application of this software tool, computing a consensus amino acid given a toler- ance threshold, is also demonstrated. The phytase and the common bacterial -lactamase proteins are analysed as ‘proof of concept’ examples. Consensus proteins, as generated by ProteinParser, are regularly …

Relationship Between Problem Behaviors, Function, And Adaptive Skills In Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities, Noha Farrah Minshawi Jan 2007

Relationship Between Problem Behaviors, Function, And Adaptive Skills In Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities, Noha Farrah Minshawi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The problem behaviors of self-injury, aggression, and stereotypies are among the most troubling and difficult to treat behaviors in individuals with intellectual disability (ID). One factor that has been implicated in the etiology and maintenance of problem behaviors in individuals with ID is adaptive skills deficits. However, the nature of the relationship between problem behaviors and adaptive skills deficits is not well understood. This relationship was assessed in two experiments. In Experiment 1, the researcher found an inverse, curvilinear relationship between problem behaviors (as identified by the Behavior Problems Inventory; BPI), and adaptive skills (as measured by the Vineland Adaptive …

The Big One, Edward A. Parson Jan 2007

The Big One, Edward A. Parson

Reviews

Richard Posner's Catastrophe: Risk and Response (Oxford University Press, 2004) examines four risks whose worst cases could end advanced human civilization or worse: asteroid impacts, a catastrophic chain reaction initiated in high-energy particle accelerators, global climate change, and bioterrorism. He argues that these all warrant more thought and response than they are receiving, and that they can usefully be assessed using a simple analytic framework based on cost-benefit analysis. This essay reviews knowledge of these risks and critically examines Posner's claims for a consistent analytic approach. While the conclusions that each risk merits more thought and effort appear persuasive, these …

Backup Tapes, You Can’T Live With Them And You Can’T Toss Them: Strategies For Dealing With The Litigation Burdens Associated With Backup Tapes Under The Amended Federal Rules Of Civil Procedure, Grant J. Esposito, Thomas M. Mueller Jan 2007

Backup Tapes, You Can’T Live With Them And You Can’T Toss Them: Strategies For Dealing With The Litigation Burdens Associated With Backup Tapes Under The Amended Federal Rules Of Civil Procedure, Grant J. Esposito, Thomas M. Mueller

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

The law in the federal courts governing whether litigants must disclose their backup tapes just changed. Faced with the cost, burdens and uncertainties of mining backup tapes, as well as other sources of data that are difficult to reach, most litigants have simply been ignoring their backup tapes. No more. The amendments to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure adopt a new standard that embraces the Zubulake I distinction between “accessible” and “inaccessible” data, and requires the disclosing party to identify all its sources of data.

Investigating Ways To Improve Discrete Choice Methods In Assessing Individual Preference Functions With Greater Reliability And Accuracy, Chhandita Das Jan 2007

Investigating Ways To Improve Discrete Choice Methods In Assessing Individual Preference Functions With Greater Reliability And Accuracy, Chhandita Das

Open Access Dissertations

Assessment of individual preferences is of interest to many disciplines, includ ing economics, marketing, business, and health. Discrete choice methods involve situations wherein individuals evaluate several policy alternatives and then choose one alternative over others, expressing their willingness to make tradeoffs among alternative attributes. A discrete choice model is then used to recover individuals' preference functions from these responses. In spite of the popularity of discrete choice methods, the reliability and accuracy of these methods in providing correct assessment of individual preferences are often questioned. This dissertation investigates ways to improve the discrete choice method in recovering this information with …

Latino Clients' Perspectives On Mental Health Services Provided At A Local Community Health Center, Natalie K. Bellman Jan 2007

Latino Clients' Perspectives On Mental Health Services Provided At A Local Community Health Center, Natalie K. Bellman

Open Access Dissertations

The aim of this study was to investigate the perspectives of Latino clients at a community health center regarding various aspects of the mental health services they were receiving. The sharing of the perspectives of these individuals allows their collective voice to be heard in order to provide justification for the necessary systemic changes to occur so that they can have access to the mental health services that best meet their needs. A qualitative, phenomenological research design utilizing an interview guide was used to allow the researcher the opportunity to hear first-hand from individuals about their own perspectives, and allow …

Data Mining In The Health Care Industry, Illya Mowerman Jan 2007

Data Mining In The Health Care Industry, Illya Mowerman

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation is about data mining in health care. The first manuscript is a case study of a pharmaceutical company's launch of a new drug. The second manuscript studies falls within a hospital. The case study is of a pharmaceutical company's failed attempt to reach overly optimistic sales goals for its new drug launch resulted in several related findings. First, in addition to data mining being a useful tool for performing post-hoc market segmentation on data collected in rather large-scale segmentation studies, it was also found to have potential for making useful post-launch adjustments to a chosen segmentation strategy. That …

Parental Involvement As Predictor Of 9 Th Grade Latino Students' Intention To Complete High School Mediated By Student School Beliefs After A One Year Follow-Up, Jasmine A. Mena

Open Access Dissertations

Latinos, currently the largest ethnic minority group in the U.S. comprising 12.5% of the population, less likely to graduate from high school than Asians, Whites, and African Americans. Due to the grave implications of low education for economic and social opportunities, an investigation of the variables related to intent to graduate among Latino youth was conducted. The focus of this study was to increase our understanding of the role parents play in students' formation of their intentions to complete high school. A survey was conducted with 137 Latino high school students in 2004. The survey involved questions about their perceptions …

Public Writing Inside And Outside The Classroom: A Comparative Analysis Of Activist Rhetorics, Eileen Medeiros Jan 2007

Public Writing Inside And Outside The Classroom: A Comparative Analysis Of Activist Rhetorics, Eileen Medeiros

Open Access Dissertations

Public writing, or writing in the public sphere, is being heralded as the next step in composition studies. Embedded in public writing is the assumption that it fosters civic engagement and effects social change, the same assumptions that were made about service-learning in the 1990's--assumptions that have turned out to be incorrect, actually. This study is an investigation of those assumptions. Using a comparative methodology, this study examines the types of writing that students are producing in five different public writing classes located around the country and juxtaposes that writing with the writing produced by members of five national activist …

Graph Coloring Algorithms For Tdma Scheduling In Wireless Sensor Networks, Tiegeng Ren Jan 2007

Graph Coloring Algorithms For Tdma Scheduling In Wireless Sensor Networks, Tiegeng Ren

Open Access Dissertations

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) as an emerging technique has received increasing attention in both research and application field. Since these Micro-Electro-Mechanical systems (MEMS) are constrained by power, physical size, and wireless communication range, efficient use of the technique leaves many challenges for researchers. One of the challenges comes from the medium access control (MAC), which determines the physical and network layer communication model within the network. In this research, we focus on MAC protocol, investigate into the mathematical model of the MAC protocols in graph theory, and develop the following algorithms that would improve the performance of data delivery applications …

An Examination Of Familial Alcoholism And Attitudes Toward Alcohol Interventions Among College Students, Christy Capone Jan 2007

An Examination Of Familial Alcoholism And Attitudes Toward Alcohol Interventions Among College Students, Christy Capone

Open Access Dissertations

This study examined the prevalence of family history of alcoholism (FHA) and its effects on alcohol use and problems in a sample (N = 408) of college students. In addition, students' goals regarding their drinking and attitudes toward various intervention approaches, including pharmacotherapy, were investigated. Using a multilevel FHA measure, an overall prevalence rate of 65.9% and a rate of 29.1% for FHA in both first and second-degree relatives were observed. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to investigate relations between gender, FHA and alcohol use and problems. Results indicated a significant positive association between FHA and alcohol-related problems and …

Self-Disclosure And Self-Management In Young Adults With Early-Onset Adult Type 2 Diabetes, Geraldine M. Chalykoff Jan 2007

Self-Disclosure And Self-Management In Young Adults With Early-Onset Adult Type 2 Diabetes, Geraldine M. Chalykoff

Open Access Dissertations

Early-onset adult type 2 diabetes, which strikes young adults aged 18-44 years, poses a significant health threat. Adequate self-management requires that young adults perform medical tasks and practice healthy lifestyle behaviors in social situations of everyday life. Few researchers have examined whether these young adults disclose their illness to others and if self-disclosure is linked to diabetes self-management. A descriptive and exploratory study was designed to answer the following research questions: (1) To what extent do young adults with early onset type 2 diabetes identify instances of illness related self-disclosure during the course of their disease? (2) What is the …

Self-Monitoring Differences In Best Friendship Maintenance: Exit, Voice, Loyalty, And Neglect, Sarah Danielle Sommerfeld Jan 2007

Self-Monitoring Differences In Best Friendship Maintenance: Exit, Voice, Loyalty, And Neglect, Sarah Danielle Sommerfeld

All Volumes (2001-2008)

The relationship between self-monitoring and maintenance strategies for best friendships was examined in this investigation. The 25-item Self-Monitoring Scale was used to assess participants’ self-monitoring type. Rusbult’s exit-voice-loyalty-neglect measure was used to assess participants’ maintenance strategies. It was predicted that high self-monitors more than low self-monitors would engage in destructive maintenance strategies, and low self-monitors more than high self-monitors would engage in constructive maintenance strategies. High self-monitors did use neglect, a destructive and passive strategy, more than did low self-monitors. However, high self-monitors did use loyalty, a constructive and passive strategy, more than did low self-monitors. The use of maintenance …

Perceptions Of Equity And Fairness In The Division Of Household Labor: Evidence From A Rural County, Kristin Staggs Jan 2007

Perceptions Of Equity And Fairness In The Division Of Household Labor: Evidence From A Rural County, Kristin Staggs

All Volumes (2001-2008)

The division of household labor among dual-earner couples has been the focus of much research, and the finding that the women in these relationships perform more domestic tasks than their male counterparts is well documented. Hochschild (1989) found this occurrence to be true among the dual-earners in her study, and she even confirmed this finding fourteen years later in a revised edition of her book. Additionally, in a review of literature on the division of household labor, Beth Anne Shelton and Daphne John (1996) concluded that even when women work outside of the home, they still complete more housework than …

The Common Body Of Knowledge: A Framework To Promote Relevant Information Security Research, Kenneth J. Knapp, F. N. Ford, Thomas E. Marshall, R. K. Rainer

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

This study proposes using an established common body of knowledge (CBK) as one means of organizing information security literature. Consistent with calls for more relevant information systems (IS) research, this industrydeveloped framework can motivate future research towards topics that are important to the security practitioner. In this review, forty-eight articles from ten IS journals from 1995 to 2004 are selected and cross-referenced to the ten domains of the information security CBK. Further, we distinguish articles as empirical research, frameworks, or tutorials. Generally, this study identified a need for additional empirical research in every CBK domain including topics related to legal …

Information Governance: A Model For Security In Medical Practice, Patricia A. Williams Jan 2007

Information Governance: A Model For Security In Medical Practice, Patricia A. Williams

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Information governance is becoming an important aspect of organisational accountability. In consideration that information is an integral asset of most organisations, the protection of this asset will increasingly rely on organisational capabilities in security. In the medical arena this information is primarily sensitive patient-based information. Previous research has shown that application of security measures is a low priority for primary care medical practice and that awareness of the risks are seriously underestimated. Consequently, information security governance will be a key issue for medical practice in the future. Information security governance is a relatively new term and there is little existing …

Computer Crimes: A Case Study Of What Malaysia Can Learn From Others?, Janaletchumi Appudurai, Chitra L. Ramalingam

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Rapid development of information technology (IT) has brought with it many new applications such as e-commerce and global business. The past few years have seen activities in the legislative arena covering issues such as digital signatures, the international recognition of electronic documents and privacy and data protection. Both the developed and developing countries have exhibited keenness to embrace the IT environment. Securing this electronic environment from intrusion, however, continues to be problematic. A particular favorite form of computer crime would be ‘hacking’. As more computer systems move on to on-line processing and improved telecommunications, computer hackers are now a real …

Monitoring And Surveillance In The Workplace: Lessons Learnt? – Investigating The International Legal Position, Verine Etsebeth Jan 2007

Monitoring And Surveillance In The Workplace: Lessons Learnt? – Investigating The International Legal Position, Verine Etsebeth

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

When considering the legal implications of monitoring and surveillance in the workplace, the question may be asked why companies deploy computer surveillance and monitoring in the first place. Several reasons may be put forward to justify why more than 80% of all major American firms monitor employee e-mails and Internet usage. However, what most companies forget is the fact that the absence or presence of monitoring and surveillance activities in a company holds serious legal consequences for companies. From the discussion in this paper it will become apparent that there is a vast difference in how most countries approach this …
