The Rebirth Of Comparative Literature In Anglocalization, Anand Patil Jun 2007

The Rebirth Of Comparative Literature In Anglocalization, Anand Patil

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Anand Patil examines in his paper, "The Rebirth of Comparative Literature in Anglocalization," the debates on effects of "globalization" on literary studies and "cultures" in India. The focus of his comparative scrutiny follows the debate about the "death" of comparative literature. Patil re-imagines the rebirth of interdisciplinarity, a basic tenet of the discipline of comparative literature and a characteristic of globalization. He has coined the term "Anglocalization" to analyze the complexity of the effects of globalization in the multilingual and multicultural situation of the sub-continent. The term is used to describe a tripartite process: Anglicization by global English, economic liberation, …

Misunderstanding Corruption And Community: Comparative Politics Of Corruption Regulation In The Pacific, Mark Findlay Jun 2007

Misunderstanding Corruption And Community: Comparative Politics Of Corruption Regulation In The Pacific, Mark Findlay

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

This paper will take as its empirical foundation the author’s experience of corruption and regulation in small Pacific island states. The argument is that notions of corruption and strategies for its regulation suitable for modernized societies, which lack cultural specificity and community engagement, may in fact stimulate corruption relationships in transitional cultures. The other consequence of the imposition of inappropriate definitions and regulation strategies is a profound misunderstanding of communities of dependence. In fact, corruption control can misconstrue and exacerbate economic and political dependence environments, fostering the conditions for corruption which accompany socio-economic development. Two remedies are suggested. First, corruption …

The Quest For Help, Sarah Abdel-Wahab Jun 2007

The Quest For Help, Sarah Abdel-Wahab

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The main argument of this exploratory study stems from the claim that individuals with impairments of any kind either mental or physical "are disabled by a society that excludes, disadvantages and discriminates against them" (UPIAS,1976). Abberely (1987) argues that the experiences of disabled people are specific to culture, and changes with time. From this perspective disability should not be seen as being naturally found in individuals, but as being defined and shaped by social, cultural and political conditions.

Unclear On The Context: Refocusing On Information Literacy's Evaluative Component In The Age Of Google, Genevieve Williams Jun 2007

Unclear On The Context: Refocusing On Information Literacy's Evaluative Component In The Age Of Google, Genevieve Williams

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

In an era of information decontextualization, the evaluative component of information literacy is more important than ever. College students believe themselves to be expert researchers, due to their familiarity with Google; yet they also value the library and know to be critical about information resources. Previous theoretical work, including Marcia Bates's "berrypicking" model and Christine Pawley's analysis of the discourse of information literacy, provides a ground for developing a proactive response to the age of Google. Far from being made redundant by ease of access to information, our task of developing information literacy in college students is more critical than …

Individual Transitions Between Organizational Cultures, Gretchen Heath May 2007

Individual Transitions Between Organizational Cultures, Gretchen Heath

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

When transitioning between organizational cultures, an individual can learn to identify and relate to the new culture by using organizational culture theories, understanding his or her own rate of adoption (the rate at which members of a social system adopt new ideas), and identifying with the behaviors of the employees of the new organization. By identifying the culture and behaviors of the new organization, an individual will know which behaviors are accepted within the new culture and which are not. A successful transition requires the letting go of the old, in collaboration with the accepting of the new. When a …

Why Design:Labs?, Thomas Binder May 2007

Why Design:Labs?, Thomas Binder

Nordes Conference Series

For some years I have together with my colleagues used the design lab as a shorthand description of open collaborations between many stakeholders sharing a mutual interest in design research in a particular field. We see the design:lab as a suitable and coherent format for design research organized as a participatory inquiry. Initially we did not put too much thought into calling this format a laboratory, and many colleagues have reacted to the label as foreign and awkward to design. In this article I will develop what I see as useful in this label, namely the emphasis on a transparent, …

Super Studio: Clarity And Ambiguity In Probes, Lisa Nugent, Sean Donahue, Ilpo Koskinen

Nordes Conference Series

This article describes how Super Studio, an annual design class given at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, has used cultural probes not only to bring clarity to the research object, but also to shape a pre-design research space through leveraging several types of ambiguity. The research model strengthens the analysis and interpretation of data from probes, while fostering design projects that reflect the daily realities (and the desires) of the population studied. Further, it provides a specific means for reconfiguring data as design interventions through the exhibition format. As the article's case study illustrates, the fluidity of …

The Patient As Skilled Practitioner, Jacob Buur, Kyle Kilbourn May 2007

The Patient As Skilled Practitioner, Jacob Buur, Kyle Kilbourn

Nordes Conference Series

We challenge the limiting view imposed on interaction design by the concept of usability because we hope to bring more awareness of and sensitivity toward skilled practitioners to the forefront of the design process. This article draws upon empirical research examples of patients who ‘do’ home hemodialysis and asks what happens when patients are considered skilled practitioners rather than as victims? In this article we argue for a change of perspective, from users to skilled practitioners in the design of technological devices. We advocate to design tools for enskilment, allowing for a sense of empowerment.

Waterfront Development With Web Mediation, Andrew Morrison, Synne Skjulstad, Birger Sevaldson May 2007

Waterfront Development With Web Mediation, Andrew Morrison, Synne Skjulstad, Birger Sevaldson

Nordes Conference Series

The term ‘unreal estate’ is coined to refer to online mediations of projected and planned urban developments, especially luxury domestic residency. A related website is studied as a mediation of co-ordinated artifacts and assembled persuasion. The site is also examined as a mediating artifact through which multiple representations are co-articulated. Taking the form of a visual essay, we argue that at tention is needed to mediation in design research.

Diablo Canyon Archaeology: Prehistoric Hunting Along California Coast, Terry L. Jones May 2007

Diablo Canyon Archaeology: Prehistoric Hunting Along California Coast, Terry L. Jones

Social Sciences

Anthropologist Terry Jones of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo has evidence suggesting prehistoric human hunters drove a flightless duck to extinction about 4,000 years ago. His theory is based on a 10,000-year history of shell and bone refuse, and other remnants of human settlement, excavated in the 1960s during the construction of the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant in San Luis Obispo County. The refuse is part of what archeologists call a “kitchen midden”–a trash heap showing what people hunted and ate. The Chumash Indians are among the modern descendants of the coastal dwellers represented at the site.

President Higdon's 2007 Commencement Address, Leo I. Higdon, Jr.

Commencement Addresses

President Higdon advises the 2007 graduates: "Use your words well. Think about how your behaviors, your actions and your words can affect others. Live by the Honor Code. And if you find yourself faltering, or in a difficult situation, reflect back on what the Honor Code has meant to you, what this community has meant to you. And draw strength from that. The only other bit of advice I will give you is one you have heard me mention often. And that is, stay connected to this College. You are our newest class of alumni. And that means this College …
